Of Shadows and Fire

The Rise of the Underworld

Rate this book
The finale in the epic Of Shadows and Fire duet.

"The mating call is in my blood, too," he whispered, his face twisting with restraint and pure male lust. "My control is slipping."

"Should I run?" I purred. "Maybe you should run."

"There's nowhere to run, for either of us," he promised darkly.

I can't forgive his betrayal, yet my body answers to his mating call.

The dirty truth about my fourth mate, a demigod druid, cut me bone deep.

To prevent an apocalypse on Earth, he had me kidnapped and taken to the Underworld. There, I was raised as a warrior slave and trained to battle the Dark Lord.

I do not care how hard it was for him to send me away, the woman he treasures most. I do not feel sorry that his heart bleeds for me every second of every day. He robbed me of my birthright and the power to carve my own destiny.

I vow never to forgive him, even though he's finally come to bring me home, even as he fights alongside me with my other immortal lovers.

Yet my body craves his every scorching touch and refuses to deny my destined mate.

This full-length reverse harem fantasy romance contains brutal battles, explicit love scenes, curses, magic, dark fae, vampires, shifters, demigod, fallen angels, and a lot of demon assholes.

This is the ending of Ayanna's, or Calamity as I prefer to call her, story. She got the happy for now ending that she deserved. Her mates are (mostly) happy, she's (mostly) happy, and all's well that ends well. However, if you have ever read any of Meg's books then you will know that these series are all connected in a big master world and the battle of good vs. evil isn't exactly over. Since I have read everything Ms. Xuemei X has written I know that we will be seeing more of these characters. I must say that I absolutely loved reconnecting with Calamity's parents since their series was the first books I read by this author and they hold a special place in my heart. There are also some questions left unanswered at the end of this one that I'm anxiously waiting for the answers to.

Like I said, this book concludes the story of Calamity and her mates. There was a lot of things I liked about this one. Calamity is a wonderful character and she embodies a lot of fun characteristics. She's snarky, brave, loyal, passionate, and has a huge heart. Her mates both compliment her and balance her out in interesting ways. I also love that each relationship between her and her mates is separate and distinct from the others. There are things that she loves about all of them collectively, like their hunky bodies, but there are also little personality traits that only one of them will possess and those are voiced in a way that lets the reader knows who she is talking about without even having their name mentioned. It's great for being able to keep the relationships clear in the reader's mind.

The story also has a lot of fast paced action. There are plenty of battles being fought, dangerous situations, and close calls for Calamity and her friends. Not everyone is going to see the end of the book, and that made me a little sad even though I know it would have been unrealistic for all of them to survive. I find it easy to fall in love with the side characters because they are given personalities and sort of fleshed out. This adds to the attraction to the story but can also make me pause when horrible things happen.

I loved the progression of the story on its own and as a way of moving the events that tie all these books together. I highly recommend reading all of her series in this order: Empress of Mysth, True Mate, Wickedest Witch, First Witch, War of Gods, Cursed Dragon Queen and Her Mates, and then Of Shadows and Fire. This will help you see the progression of the story line and meet each of the characters who are sometimes mentioned or may even show up in another story.

Okay, I didn't think book one was particularly impressive, but this was a whole different level of AWFUL. I don't know why I didn't just DNF once I realized nothing of consequence was going to happen. After they missed their trip home I knew it was going to once again be full of treks and travels across the wasteland of the underworld. And I was right. We did that already. I wanted to see some actual plot in this one, dammit!

The writing wasn't good in the previous book but it was truly horrendous here. Especially the sex scenes and the "dirty talk". Cringe-worthy doesn't even begin to describe it. I was embarrassed just reading it. And the "banter" between the heroine and the bad guys was no better.

“I’m not a girl,” I said. “I’m a woman, and I ain’t just any woman you can take by force, asshole.”
He blinked. “No one has called me asshole before. I must teach you a lesson so you’ll respect me.”
“You don’t know how to earn respect, douchebag,” I snorted.
“Douchebag sounds worse than asshole,” he said with anger.

Yeah, they really need to work on their smack talk.

I will never again touch anything by this author.

Shoddy and messy

Not her best work to be sure. The story was so convoluted, no character development and I'm all for sexy times but those scenes were atrocious. This is by far my least favorite ever. I plodded through the book just to finally get to the end, and I wasted 2 hours of my life that I can never get back.

Hard to judge...

First book started of interestingly, but from then on it was slippery slope..

There was lots of info dumps, awkward, stiff conversations, cringy humour and lots of things that seemed just off.

I literally just finished 2nd book and I don't know fmc and her harem at all. Like yeah Calamity/ Ayanna constantly wanted to save others, been in biggest denial ever and suddenly it was like , f#ck it I will be your queen.... And don't let me start even on that bit. There's prophecy, but it just doesn't make sense and it's just being ignored later on. First book theres constant 'you need to meet Prophet' and when she does in book 2 it's just 'hi, nice to meet ya'.

And then there's all the spaceships, aliens, flying to other planets and different realms 🙄 one must read some other books to get a grip of it all.

Anyway I could rant about many other things that happens in this 2 books and don't have any rhyme or reason to them, but let's just say I won't be comming back to reread this duet.

I’m aware there’s a difference between romance fiction and erotica, but there can still be layers and a flow in the story. I didn’t find that with The Fall of the Underworld, even less so than The Burn of the Underworld. Although the aim was clearly a light, fun erotica tale, it felt choppy and I didn’t find the landscape was well developed.

The sex dialogue seemed to be the same sentences repeated. No anticipation, no build up, no finesse. And although there could have been an interesting foundational story, it was primarily the backdrop for the repetitive dialogue.

The one merit is that personalities of the characters were distinct... until they talked about sex, then they all spoke and acted exactly the same, save that one could fly while having sex.

Again, I’m well aware this is erotica and supposed to be a fun book, but it is possible to have erotica with more layers. This is a well-rated duology and in its defense, I read an amazing YA fantasy in the middle of trying to finish this one. If you pick up this duology, I suggest setting a mindset for creative sex and fun.

Hope for Elijah and none for Merlin

Ayanna and her mates lead her people on a perilous journey to freedom but little do they know the enemy is right within their mist. A battle they are ill prepared for is inevitable but help comes right in the nick of time. The truth about who kidnapped Ayanna is revealed and she is not one to forgive easily.

Now as much as I love this book it makes me mad. Spoiler*****

I cannot believe how stubborn and bratty Ayanna is being. I really didn't think she would stay mad at Merlin this long and make him suffer. He sacrificed and risked so much for her and still is. I just can't get over the way things were left between them. Even after Ayanna came to terms with the fact that Merlin was right in doing what he did she still refuses to give him a chance and excludes him. Really breaks my heart. I really hope there is another book and soon and I hope she grovels for treating Merlin the way she has.

I was so hopeful.....

The storyline/plot was good. There was a lot of monotony. And just when you feel like it’s going to be ok, she jacked up the ending. It seems like it might be a partial cliffhanger but the description says this is the final book in this series. Not ok.

I really don’t enjoy writing negative reviews and who would? Ideally I want more than anything to love a book and devour it in a single reading. However, I felt as though I was reading an author’s first attempt at writing with this series, which is odd because I know this is not her first attempt, or anywhere near it and I’m certain I’ve read other things by her that did not come off as a first effort. There is little flow to the story or character development and the main character changes her mindset/feelings etc. at the drop of a hat, often with little to no thought or reasoning. Hardly anything that happens in this book feels organic, with most information being provided as either exposition or through rather flat statements. The plot was convoluted and came across as a mishmash of mythologies with the mention of a random spaceship used to transport Angels, Fae and likely a whole bunch of other species to other galaxies thrown in for good measure.

It’s almost unheard of for me to stop reading mid-book, even more so while reading a book that’s not the first in a series, but I did so part of the way through this one. The character development is lacking, with all of the main characters morphing between being powerful leader-types and acting like teenagers who have no impulse control (mating fever or not, these books need to get a grip. See mention of intimacy below…). It’s plot is shallow, with so much filler in-between the scenes that should be important and at the same time it feels incredibly rushed (likely because very little happens over large sections of the books). The sex scenes were also atrocious. I understand not everyone writes intimacy as well as another might, but in these books they bordered on vulgar, despite the main character swearing up and down and repeating again and again that she would not lie down and rut like an animal. This pattern of behavior continued even after she does indeed do what she swears not to. It’s not sexy, it’s not romantic and it reads like the proverbial bad plot in a porno. What a shame this was as it could have been a really interesting series, but I’m actually not disappointed having stopped where I did, especially considering that the other less than 5-star reviews mention that much js left up in the air at the end of the book.

Well, here it goes:
The books were quite good, but I had a huge issue with the main heroine and that was her
faith in Elijah mostly! For god sake, I understand that she had a lot on her mind - her 2 mates who she constantly fucked, those poor ppl who she saved, but must she abandon her faith in her first mate Elijah just bc he stayed in enemy territory and acted like he was against her? Why she never thought about him pretending to change sides? Especially when she sad that his mark on her hand was still there! After their confrontation when she saw a flick of desire in his eyes, she dismissed it. She was ready to leave him in hell! Where was her faith in him, she just accepted like others that he got corrupted! Then there was that black owl! After her tiger so many times informed her that owl is enemy she just dismissed it again and again! It so much irritated me!
There were times when I got sick of her inner monologue rambling (as I was listening to audiobook mb the narrator was at fault) I just got tired and had to skip pages! I think there could have been more POV then hers! I would have really appreciate it.
As for plot, I quite liked it.
The end was quite interesting closure for me bc firstly Sebastian who was so important to her in the begging and here we didn’t get any info about what happened to him. At least there could have been a mention about him going to his parents or sth! But we got nothing! Then Merlin, I understand that they were angry at him for what he did, but he fucking save her life by sending her there! So they should at least appreciate it. She is alive bc of him. I was quite surprised that he couldn’t be with her yet bc he still had to do something! He obviously likes torturing himself!
But anyway I give this book 3/5⭐️ bc of all this stuff.

Ok I don’t know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t that. Book one was pretty eh in my eyes, things were rushed and awkward feeling and the plot missed some key details. But I really wanted this book to get better because of the potential for a storyline like this. It didn’t. The plot foundation had so much potential to be a pretty great story, but there was just so much missing and it was so rushed and unbelievable even for a fantasy. The only thing it wasn’t missing was super cringy, exaggeratedly dirty, super unrealistic sex scenes. I mean really, she went from virgin slave to porn star pro with a harem in 2 seconds and the dirty talk was so awkward. It was just nonstop mating fever this mating urge that even in the middle of battle. And don’t even get me started on the Elijah 180 flip or how her parents just show up out of no where and instantly treat her as a baby when she’s a grown women with a harem of mates and x rated fantasies. THEY TRY TO READ HER BEDTIME STORIES. She goes from being a queen to a spoiled child I couldn’t respect anymore instantly.

Great read

I loved this series. Meg always keeps me wanting more, I just can’t put the books down. From the action and drama to the hot romance, I’m hooked. This book was a great read, my only concern is with the ending... left me on a complete cliffhanger. Will there be another book exploring Merlin and Ayannas love journey and will they all get to travel to the other mates home? The underworld didn’t exactly rise.. there are still many slaves down there and did Elijah take all those archdemons into the layline as well? What became of them... hoping for a couple more books added to the series. I’m obviously invested into the characters and story.

I highly recommend reading.

I didn't like this one nearly as much as the first one. Ayanna was fine as a character, and so were her mates. The sex scenes between them felt a little off, though. I cringed at some of the wording, and it just made me uncomfortable. I would have rather it been a fade to black than the way it was described. I absolutely adored Willow! She was so strong and fought so hard for Ayanna. Halia pissed me off to no end, and she didn't deserve her position. I was glad to know that Elijah wasn't a traitor to the mating bond as I was concerned about that. My favorite characters though, have got to be her mom and dad. They were only in the book for 5 minutes but were absolutely hilarious! Poor ayanna having to have to deal with all their patenting 😂😂

i started this book thinking it couldn’t possibly be worse than the first, an authors writing should improve with more books written, but i was devastatingly wrong. in every way was this book worse than the previous. the dirty talk was cringey on an epic scale, bleach my eyes scale. i genuinely do not believe there was even a plot for this book, and while we talk about the characteristics of this book outside of a girl getting railed by three men, calamity raves about being all independent and for herself, yet she isn’t. this girl would let the world burn just to be railed, honestly she says she’s independent but she depends on sex.

Queen’s rule

The Rise of the Underworld is book two in the series Of Shadows and Fire by author Meg Xuemei X. A truly amazing tale of conquering fears and fighting the evils of the worlds. A fairytale like story that captures your imagination and gives flight to your dreams. Yet it’s not all rainbows- darkness lurks every corner. And it will take a warrior to tame the light and the darkness- harness their power and end the injustice.
Only issue is that I feel it’s not done- you’ll understand once you read this book. There could be hope though of more to come- so I’ll be patient.
Enjoy!!

When I read the first book I definitely wasn't happy with it. However, I'm one of those people who can't start a series and not finish it. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It was much better than the first one. It never explained who Xavier was. Obviously he brought the kids to the Underworld but who was he? While Merlin did what he did, that issue wasn't resolved. So, still a few things not wrapped up but there aren't major issues. Anyways this book is much better than the first one.

Kick hell’s butt

Love this continuation and love Calamity. Heartbreaking revelations and utter betrayals seem to shadow her wherever she goes.
Love the utter determination of the people from the Underworld. Killian still is probably my favorite, he is so cute and pure. The parents made me laugh at their over the top affection.
I didn’t like Calamity’s relationship with Merlin. It reminded me too much of the relationship dynamic in another series by Meg.

Loved everything but the ending!

This book was sooooo good until I got to the end. The only reason for 4 vs 5 stars is the way things just ended. I didn’t feel closure to the story bc Merlin was still off doing Merlin things. Probably just my personal preference of wanting a buttoned up HEA. lol. Overall this series is one I’d recommend bc I love the characters and the unique nature of the story!

Another great book!

This was another great book! I'm confused though, was that the end? If it was, I felt it was left unresolved and with questions left unanswered. Especially concerning Merlin.

Otherwise, I have no complaints. Action-packed, adventurous, sexy, hot, page-turning, suspenseful, I could go on and on.

The continuation from book 1 was seemless, with non stop action and steamy interludes, and impossible to put down! I loved the tie in to the previous series 'The First Witch', but the situation with Merlin felt unfinished will there be a book 3 or another series? This was an amazing read, with fantastic characters and wonderful narration. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

The Rise of the Underworld

Calamity and her mates are fleeing; fleeing the Underworld as quickly as they can. The promised path has been closed to them, but another, final choice remains. Can they overcome the legions of demons and the King of the Underworld himself, to survive?

Holy buckets the is one hit story!

Not the final book

This was not the final book. It ended with a major cliffhanger and left the story hanging. I am so angry. I was trying to figure out how the book was almost over with the loose ends. So, I thought there might have been another book. But there wasn't. Truly disappointing. This book was enjoyable until it got to the ending.

Not as good as the first book but has some nice moments. It's a bit all over the place and Ayanna is a bit of a whiney brat at times. I didn't like the development with Merlin and Ayanna's stubbornness towards him but I enjoyed the relationship between her and her other mates and the excitement of trying to escape the Underworld.

DNF 50%

The more I read it, the less I understand this story🤦🏻‍♀️
So now Elijah became a villain and wants to kill Calamity and the other guys? Too farfetched...maybe he's just pretending🧐
They said that Merlin couldn't come to Underworld and now he's here...ok...
Well, other things don't make sense and I lost any interest in this story☹️
Sorry not sorry🤷🏻‍♀️

This wasn't it.

I really enjoyed the first one. This should have been split into at least one, if not 3 more books. The mating and the use of the term pulled from the mixed story line. This had potential. 1st book- 4 stars. This one- 2 stars. Overall series rating- 3 stars. 1 day and almost 5k pages later I'm left underwhelmed at best.

WOW

What the hades was that ending? I know I read in others that it was a cliffhanger even though it is only supposed to be 2 books. Who does that? If I didn't love reading her other books, this would have been the end of me reading her books. I hope there is a follow-up to ensure all is complete.

I like the author's work, but I tire of the same phrases over and over again. Raw and hard. Liquid fire. I don't think it's too much to ask for something fresh. I have read enough of your series to tire of it.

good book

I loved this book in the series, but hated that Merlin did not get his time. I hope that means we get another book. We need to get the dragon back from the backstabbers. Great writer
