Stan and Jan Berenstain (often called The Berenstains) were American writers and illustrators best known for creating the children's book series the Berenstain Bears. Their son Mike Berenstain joined them as a creative team in the late 1980s.
Since it's officially summertime for me, my kiddos, and a lot of teachers out there, it's time to include a summer review. I loved the Berenstain Bears as a kid. I collected the books, read them up over and over, and have a collection I keep out for my students. My collection was read a lot more when I taught first grade, but I still see them out with my second graders periodically.
This one about a summer job on a farm is fantastic (as many were)! It includes details of life on a farm and new vocabulary, being responsible with a job, and working hard towards a goal and satisfaction. All are good areas to expose young readers to.
This was a wonderful Berenstain Bears book! Brother and Sister Bear learn from Farmer Ben all about 'cash crops' for farmers. The kids go to work for Farmer Ben for the summer and instead of at first Ben telling the kids what they will be paid he gives them a section of his corn garden; his 'cash crop' If he gets a good bounty then the kids will too; if he doesn't then they don't either. Wonderful way of teaching children, especially 'city' kids that doesn't know about farm life the ins and outs of what it's about living on a farm. Wonderfully done Mr Bernstain!
