Surprise! A must-have birthday story for party-going Maisy fans everywhere.
Maisy has gotten up very early because today is her birthday, and she is excited. But there's no mail! Did everyone forget? And why is Charley's house so dark and quiet? Surprise! Every small child who has ever felt the thrill (or trepidation) of birthday anticipation will want an invitation to this fete full of games, treats, cards, presents, and, of course, Maisy's good friends. Best of all is a big birthday cake with candles to blow out while making a wish! This First Experiences story is sure to make birthday surprises a welcome adventure for both seasoned partiers and first-time celebrants.
Lucy Cousins, BA Honours in Graphic Design from The Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Brighton Polytechnic, postgraduate degree from Royal College of Art, is an author-illustrator of children's books. She is best known for her books featuring Maisy Mouse but she has also published other children's books including one about Noah's Ark. She is a mother of four and lives in Hampshire, England. Her own children are the inspiration for her books whose age range is 2-8.
My tiny tot is obsessed with Maisy and singing Happy Birthdays and this had both so she was a happy camper. I am most impressed by Maisy’s friends for going above and beyond for her because at 30, I would be lucky if my own friends remembered my name let alone throw me a surprise birthday party.
This new addition to the Maisy's First Experiences series features her friends throwing her a surprise Birthday party. Maisy is treated to presents, party games, a lunch, and birthday cake.
The First Experiences series works well with older toddlers and young preschoolers when they need to learn about new places or social situations. This book is very indicative of why this series has had such a long following. It is bright and colorful, with simple sentence structure, and a clear linear plot that will allow children to experience a birthday party with a trusted friend like Maisy.
I would recommend this book for purchase for all public library collections and elementary school libraries where the school has a preschool program.

I wish we could use a first experiences book in place of social stories, but no. It doesn't go into feelings or socially acceptable things to do or the fact that a surprise party may scare the dickens out of kids.
My newly 3 year old loved reading about Maisy's birthday party. She can't have a proper birthday party at the moment with restrictions, so she presumably lived vicariously through Maisy.
