This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the second book in the Cold Case Investigators series. I really enjoyed the beginning, but the middle I felt was a little repetitive. I felt the story was not going anywhere doing the middle. The ending was full of action and the twist I really did not guess. I love the message in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Love Inspired Suspense) or author (Jessica R. Patch) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
COLD CASE DOUBLE CROSS (Cold Case Investigators Book #2) by Jessica R. Patch is a Christian romantic suspense in the Cold Case Investigators series. Each book features a member of the MBI (Mississippi Bureau of Investigations) Cold Case Unit involved in a crime mystery/suspense. They meet and work with their perfect match and as their case progresses so does the romance. Each book can easily be read as a standalone with minimal crossover of the characters in the MBI unit introduced in the first book.
Detective Cash Ryland believes his brother was wrongly convicted of murdering his ex-wife. He is determined to find the real killer no matter how long it takes.
MBI Cold Case Investigator Mae Vogel is home on vacation to visit her ailing grandmother. Cash wants Mae’s expert assistance, but he mistreated her years ago in high school. Mae is willing to help with the case, but she is having difficulty forgiving Cash personally.
Can they work out their differences and solve the mystery before the killer silences them for good?
I enjoyed this quick romantic suspense read. The suspense plot is fast-paced, action packed and gives the reader many suspects and red herrings. The killer was a surprise to me and I like when that happens. It is well integrated with the Christian romance which has no sex scenes. Mae must learn to truly forgive past transgressions and learn and believe that there are some good men out there. Cash is hiding a secret that he has held for far too long. Ms. Patch does a good job of working the H/h through their pasts and misunderstandings.
I can recommend this Christian romantic suspense for a fast and entertaining read.
"Cold Case Double Cross" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. It's the second in a series, but it works as a standalone. The mystery was a clue-based puzzle to solve. I had a suspicion that they ought to look further into certain people, but I wasn't sure of exactly whodunit until the final clues (when Mae and Cash also worked it out). The suspense came from repeated attacks on Cash, Mae, and anyone who ticked off the killer (like Cash's brother).
Cash and Mae worked well together as a team despite the past issues that they needed to work through. Cash broke Mae's heart and trust when they were in high school, reinforcing her belief that men can't be trusted to respect women. She struggled to forgive Cash for the past and trust him again. Cash respected Mae's skill but had her back when she needed help or someone at her side. He felt stupid due to his severe dyslexia, and he didn't want to tell Mae about it even though she always insisted he was smart. Mae built Cash up (except when he triggered her continuing trust issues).
The Christian element was Mae learning to forgive past offenses. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable romantic suspense.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
A fast-paced suspense romance read and I love it. It's full of action, danger in every corner that put me on the edge of my seat, mystery that keeps me turning page after page, sweet romance that put a big smile on my face, it's about forgiveness, it's about excepting your flaws. It's light yet so complicated at the same time. It's a short book yet packed with lots of good things.
I love how the author throwing lots of suspects and then hit me with a twist. I also love the romance between Cash and Mae, it's a second chance romance which is one of my fav tropes. It's entertaining, although a bit predictable at the end for me, I still love it nonetheless.
Highly recommended to everyone who's looking for a light fast-paced suspense romance read.
I liked this one. Cash Ryland has a disability that he has overcome, for the most part, except for feeling that because of it, he doesn't deserve what he truly wants. A wife and family. Enter a girl from high school days ... one he kissed. But the girl who tutored him and who he betrayed. He cost her valedictorian. Neither of them has forgotten it.
Now she is in law enforcement too. They are assigned by her agency and his police department to solve a murder. And then they become targets.
I enjoyed it from start to finish. And didn't guess the prep until the very end.
Mae Vogel's job as a cold case investigator for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations turns personal when she goes home to Willow Banks for a week. Her grandmother's health is failing so Mae took a vacation week to spend some time with her. Mae's major complaint with this visit was the tension within her family at first but that wasn't much compared to the cold case she becomes involved in. Cash Ryland, the guy who stole her English essay and thus messed up her chance to become high school valedictorian, brings her into his investigation of his brother's murder conviction. She didn't want to work with Cash on this cold case but it's her job. Mae just needs to fight her attraction to a changed Cash Ryland.
Cash Ryland is a detective in the Willow Banks Sheriff Department. He has been looking into the murder case that sent his brother Troy to prison for killing his ex-wife. Troy insists he is innocent. Cash realizes his brother isn't exactly the best specimen of humanity. He beat and abused his wife when he got drunk. Which happened too often. But Cash is convinced Troy is no murderer. Cash is sure getting cold case investigator Mae Vogel involved in his investigation will prove his brother's innocence.
Cold Case Double Cross by Jessica R. Patch is the second book in her Cold Case Investigators series. This is a christian romance with strong themes of forgiveness and trusting God's wisdom. There are frequent biblical references. This all fits well with the storyline. The two main characters, Mae and Cash, have trust issues and need to work out past differences between the two of them. As their investigation moves along they face much danger. The actual murderer sure doesn't want to get caught. The action and suspense begins early in the story and continues to thrill throughout. I liked how Mae and Cash worked out their issues to become better people and a trusting loving couple.
I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
'I'm not a huge believer in coincidences where murder is concerned.'
Detective Cash Ryland's brother is in prison for a crime Cash is sure he didn't commit, but he needs cold case investigator Mae Vogel's help to prove it. He mistreated her years ago, so he feels bad asking her and even worse if she discovers a secret he's kept all his life. Mae is sure Cash is wrong about his brother, but then things begin to happen and both their lives are threatened. Someone is trying to keep this investigation from gaining momentum.
Patch has long been a favorite and is very adept at writing suspense, which is my favorite genre. She builds the action until the end, leaving the reader breathless with excitement. And she springs a huge surprise here. There were plenty of suspects, but I never once guessed the culprit! Totally blown away by the ending. Well done!
My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own.
I started it and just could not put the book down. Read it all in one day and for me that's really good. I am a slow reader unless the book holds my interest and I can't seem to stop reading which is the case with this one.
Mae is with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and her brother is in Law enforcement as well. But her family thinks that she should work a job that is more suitable for a woman. Her Dad is always offering his opinion but her Mom never speaks up for her or defends her
Cash asks her to help him solve a cold case that his brother was charged with his wife's murder.
Again it is an amazing read. Check it out you will be glad that you did.
Jessica Patch never fails to engage me in a rollercoaster ride of suspense. This book features Meg with the cold case division and Cash with the Sheriff's office. They are trying to find the real killer of Cash's sister in law. His brother was prosecuted for the murder, but Cash knows deep down that his brother didn't do it. This book has a lot of action and the couple have a lot to discover, both professionally and personally. I highly recommend this book to any romantic suspense reader. This book is in a series, but can be read as a stand alone. *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and this is my honest opinion.
I do so love a cold case mystery and this one is so well done. Mae's initial reluctance to get involved is both personal and professional. She has a bitter history with Cash and those kind of high school wounds can easily fester. So, not only does the closed-case-not-a-cold-case file make Cash's brother appear to be guilty, she really wants nothing to do with her teenage nemesis. That leaves Mae battling with her conscience as she struggles to look at the problem objectively.
Cash about tore my heart out. He's a changed man and so humble and accepting of Mae's inability to trust him. A difficult childhood and a unique personal struggle leave him feeling less than. I wanted to smack Mae upside the head for not giving him a chance, but, of course, I knew Chase's secret and she didn't for most of the book. And Mae had her own personal history that skewed the way she looked at Cash -- and all men, really. Gah, the tension between these two is both exhilarating and infuriating...and definitely kept me turning pages.
Great suspense -- with a number of potential suspects -- and the action really amps up once Mae officially turns the closed case into a cold case. Patch's diabolical mind has created some very cunning 'deterrents' and near death experiences for Mae and Cash which makes for a thrilling read.
I'm excited that this is part of a series and am anxiously looking forward to the Patch's next Cold Case Investigators installment.
Jessica Patch combines enthralling suspense with a clean second-chance romance for an excellent read in Cold Case Double Cross. She ties a murder mystery with a learning disability and a once bitten, twice shy attitude to set up this exciting story featuring detective Cash Ryland and MBI Agent Mae Vogel. Cash's and Mae's struggles give them a depth of character that helps the reader really care what happens to them. I love the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation in this book. I highly recommend this to readers of clean and of inspirational romantic suspense. You won't be disappointed, but you may stay up past your bedtime!
Outstanding story! Just when I thought I had it figured out, Patch threw a new suspect into the mix and I'd have to rethink everything I thought I knew. Loved the concept, the characters, and the execution--no pun intended!
I received an advance copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I took this book to the pool while my kids were swimming one Sunday Afternoon. I figured I could get some reading done while they swam. I got so into the book that I lost all track of time and they were ready to go home and tired of swimming. I was not ready to be done reading. I came home and finished this book in one sitting. Every book that I read by this author gets better and better.
This is book two in the Cold Case Investigations series. These are stand alone books - but there will be references to the first stories characters. In this book we see Mae and Cash. They went to high school together. Cash stayed in their small town, Mae went out and made a name for herself. She is a cold case investigator for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Her father does not approve of what she has chosen for her career. She is home visiting with family due to the decline in health with her Grandma Rose. Cash and Mae run into each other during a Fourth of July celebration.
Cash needs Mae's help. Cash does not believe that his brother is responsible for the murder of his wife. However, he has been tried and convicted and everyone in their small town feels like it is a closed case. He asks for Mae's help. Mae and Cash have a painful history. Mae still holds a lot of anger and hurt toward Cash. However when several attempts are made on their lives, Mae believes maybe Troy is innocent. Cash and Mae dig in and try to figure out who would have killed Troy. What they uncover is shocking and could lead to a lot of downfall.
This author will take you on a WILD adventure. I have been on her street team for awhile now, so after I read this book I messaged her and told her how in SHOCK I was. I had NO idea who was behind everything until the last 15 pages. She is a master at what she does and will throw many many wrenches into the story.
Well written characters, suspenseful action packed storyline, and so much more. I LOVE this series. I am excited to read the next book.
I received a copy of this book through the author and publisher, all thoughts are my own.
This was an EXCELLENT read! I love cold case stories and this one with it's twists, turns and exciting and dangerous moments was such a fun mystery. Mae and Cash were great characters and their backstory added just the right amount of history and drama to their reunion while trying to figure out the truth about the murder of Cash's sister in law. Fantastic story!
I received this book as a member of the launch team. I was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
So, so good! I felt like I was in the sticky heat of a Memphis summer, and I totally related to the heroine, Mae. She didn't let uncomfortable family dynamics or painful memories from her past stop her from doing her job, even when her life was being threatened! And Cash is my kind of hero. Yeah, he was a bad boy, but he's got a big heart and is exactly the guy Mae needs.
I'm a huge fan of Jessica's books. They're fast-paced, feature strong characters and always seasoned with humor and chemistry!
Cold Case Double Cross by Jessica R Patch gives readers plenty of action and suspense from the start. Police detective Cash Ryland’s brother is in jail for murder, but Cash doesn’t think he’s guilty. He convinces his high school ex-girlfriend, cold case investigator Mae Vogel, to take up the case. Too bad he and Mae have a rocky past. But Mae soon realizes that they are both being targeted for getting too close to the truth.
With lots of suspects and plenty of life-or-death danger, this story is a definite home run for a suspense fan like me. The characters had chemistry and the plot twists kept me rapidly flipping pages until the end. The ending was quite unexpected, and I love books that keep me guessing who the culprit is until the very last page. This is the first novel I’ve read by this author, and now I’ve just added a bunch of her novels to my wish list.
Overall Rating: 5 stars (I loved it, couldn’t put it down)
Suspense Rating: 5 stars (Non-stop edge-of-your-seat suspense from start to finish)
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
All she wanted to do was take a vacation and yet, the minute Mae stepped into town things started going crazy. Being a cold case detective seemed to follow her even to her hometown, and her past hurts were still there hanging on. Could she solve this old-new case before she or anyone else, gets killed? Cash just wants justice for his brother. Can Cash convince Mae that he really is sorry for what he did so many years ago, or will it hinder them from finding the real killer, without getting killed themselves? I’ve said this before, but I’m going to say it again - When reading a book, I always try to place myself in the main character’s life. Well, with either of these main characters I think I’ll pass! In this book, the author has made her characters go through so much I can’t believe they are still standing! WOW! She has risen to join in with a few other authors which take their characters on one thing after another in their books. I love this because it makes the book go fast and furious, but it’s also difficult to put down when I am reading it. I find I forget to do things like cook meals or go to bed, just so I can find out if the characters are okay! This story also dealt with some tough issues many people struggle with. This author shared the struggles of a person with Dyslexia and a person dealing with abuse. Each issue can be so overwhelming and have tons of lasting complications. There’s a quote that really spoke to me. “She was a grown woman continuing to live in the hurt of a teenage girl. That couldn’t be healthy. But she didn’t know how not to.” Jessica Patch is a very skilled author who weaves intriguing stories that will grip your heart and captivate your soul. Her stories also have wonderful examples of how God can take a hurting individual, and fill them with peace, joy, and love. I highly recommend picking up this book. However, I need to warn you, you might not get much sleep until you finish reading it! It’s a story that has SO many twists and turns your heart will be pumping hard and you might hold your breath. But just remember to breathe or you’ll miss the shocking ending! I was given this book by the publisher and in no way did it influences my review, all opinions are my own.
Disclaimer: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Jessica R. Patch, Netgalley, and Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense for this free copy. All quotes in this review are taken from the Advanced Reader Copy and may change in final publication.
So I didn’t realize that it was a series, but like with other Harlequin series, you don’t need to read them in order. I am curious about the first book though, so I may end up checking that out in the future. Also, thank you to Dita for including all of the trigger warnings in their review on Goodreads, that I’m linking here for your review.
One of my favorite things about romantic suspense novels from Harlequin is that things seem to move super quick in these, but not where things aren’t making sense. This is also part of the Christian romance lines, so keep that in mind if you aren’t the type to read religious types of novels. I felt like this was okay, I didn’t feel like I was oversaturated with it, so that’s a plus. I think that Patch did a great job with this novel.
This is also a good reminder that you should also treat people with respect, especially when you’re younger and you’re still learning how to be a good person, because you never know who you’re going to need help from when you get older. That’s what happened here between Cash Ryland and Mae Vogel. Cash was basically a jerk to Mae back in high school, but now they have to work together in order to solve a cold case involving Cash’s brother being convicted of murder years ago. Mae could have been petty and said no, or had another Cold Case Investigator assigned to the case so she didn’t have to deal with Cash, but alas the book probably wouldn’t have been as intriguing if that happened.
For those that enjoy second chance romances, check this one out and see if it’s to your liking. For those that like solving murder mysteries – albeit this isn’t the typical one but it’s still something you have to figure out along with Cash and Mae – I think you should check this one out too. Pay attention to all of the suspects being introduced to you, and stay tuned for the big twist to see if you could guess ahead of time. Lots of fun.
Detective Cash Ryland is convinced his brother was wrongfully convicted of murder years ago and is willing to put himself in danger to prove it. Cold case investigator Mae Vogel could help him, but he mistreated her in high school. To solve this case, the past has to be put aside. If not, the true killer might come after them both.
Cold Case Double Cross is the second book of the Cold Case series, and I hadn't read the first one. I didn't feel like I was missing anything, maybe because the series focuses on different members of the team.
Mae has to deal with a lot of pressure both in the field and at home; her family is traditional to a fault so that her father and brother will spout rather misogynistic lines about how she shouldn't be working as an investigator and let the real men do the work. Cash is a detective caught up in his own personal case so that he often reacts by instinct and emotions rather than with logic. Mae is able to pull him back from it, even after she's threatened as well as he is. I appreciated her voice of reason, and that even when she made mistakes of her own, she was willing to apologize and make up for them.
People aren't who they seem to be at first, and the theme of alcoholism, domestic violence, and vengeance comes up throughout the text. None of it is described in-depth but is a linking factor between the victims in the story. As with many thrillers and mysteries, we have a lot of red herrings to sort through. We discover facts as Mae and Cash do, and digging further into who might have wanted Cash's brother out of the way only puts both of them in the killer's sights. The two are forced together, confronting the perceptions they had of each other and the past in their town. As with any good partnership, it works when there's trust and a shared goal.
Cold Case Double Cross ( Cold Case Investigators #2 ) BY: Jessica R. Patch Cold Case Double Cross is the second installment in the series Cold Case Investigators. Author Jessica R. Patch has did it again she brings us another cold case of mystery , action, danger, and a chance at love. She did not disappoint. I was drawn in at the start and did not want to put it down. The story is well written and the characters well developed. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Cash has done Mae wrong when they were young costing her being valedictorian while she was the one trying to help him at school and she's never forgot it. Still untrusting of him its been years and now she's on a case with him and still not sure if she can trust him.
This was a pretty good book. There was just so much going on that I had a hard time putting it down. Cash is doing what he can to try to help his brothers case which he felt was done without further digging into and it was a rush job so he's looking more into it. Personally I thought it was a bit ridiculous that Mae was mad at Cash still about something that happed in their past I mean they were young, but I can kinda get it with how things continually seemed to happen without anyone helping her side. I thought it was interesting how they handled the case and overall it was pretty good I really enjoyed it.
mae is a cold case investigator and cash woks with the local polilce , but they have a past . he askes mae to help prove his brother did not kill is ex wife at first she says no but then there are several attempts on their lives and someone is killed. can they figure it out in time ? mae also has to deal with her father and brother who do not think mae should be an investigtor and put her down. this is a page turning story to the end i was given a copy but this is an honest review. if you like suspense with a little romance and a lot of action and intrigue you will want to read this book
This book kept me guessing the entire time. And just when I thought I had it figured out, boom! Wrong! It was such a good story. I loved the faith component, the romance and the mystery. A lot of times I feel these short books don’t develop the characters and the plot enough to feel like a complete novel. But Jessica Patch does a fabulous job of giving me everything I want in a novel without it feeling so condensed. Definitely grab this one!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. All opinions are my own.
This is 3rd book I read by Jessica R. Patch. I enjoyed this book's storyline. I really liked the suspense in this story. I really liked the action in this story. I really liked the Christian theme in this story. I really liked Mae's character. I really liked Cash's 💵 character. I really liked the ending.
This was a quick and enjoyable read. The story kept me guessing, which I love. I enjoyed reading Mae and Cash’s story and watching their relationship grow. I would definitely recommend this book.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. My opinions are my own.
Detective Cash Ryland suspects that his brother has been wrongfully imprisoned, the only person he can ask for help is Mae Vogel the woman he wronged when they were in high school. As they start digging into the cold case, threats are made, can they solve it before it's too late.
I liked that Cash has come to faith, as well as how Mae's grandmother encourages her to forgive. I liked seeing their relationship grow and them come to trust each other over the course of the book.
A little harder to get into, Mae struggles to move past old-fashioned generalizations, and there is a lot that she wrestles with in her past.
Overall, I'll admit that it just wasn't my favorite, as their was a lot of self talk and blaming others. There were things that I liked, but in the end it was mixed for me.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Detective Cash Ryland begins working with cold case investigator Mae Vogel after asking her to look into his brother's case, who was wrongly convicted for killing his wife. Cash knows his brother is innocent and would do anything to find the real killer.
Unfortunately, Cash and Mae have a rocky past, one that began back in high school. Mae was betrayed by Cash, and even tough she is a woman of faith, she struggles to forgive him and finds working with him more than a challenge. But, she excels at her job and is begins looking for answers.
While this story has a good level of suspense, faith and forgiveness play equal roles. Factor in the love that develops between Cash and Mae and this proved to be a delightful story.
Many thanks to Love Inspired Suspense and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This is a decent romantic suspense novel set in the small southern town of Willow Banks. Agent Mae Vogel, who normally handles cold cases at the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, is asked to look into a recently solved case. The problem is that the local detective asking for her help is someone she hoped to avoid. Cash Ryland is a former classmate with whom she had a bad experience while still in high school. Mae is reluctant to help Cash prove his brother innocent of murdering his wife. After all, he has been convicted and sentenced. What more can be done. She initially says no... until Cash is attacked. More violence follows, leading Mae to agree that someone does not want the case reopened. Add an increasing romantic attraction between the two to the tale, and the book heats up to the final action-packed page.
