Clarity's home is her spaceship. Living on the move. Planet to planet. When money trouble forces Clarity and her traveling companion, Irohann, to take on passengers, Irohann worries his secret identity will be revealed. He's a canine alien on the run from an empire of sentient plants, and their queen has a personal vendetta against him. But Clarity believes his fears are unfounded and the Doraspians gave up on him long ago. Heartsick at the idea of losing their ship, Clarity accepts an offer that's clearly too good to be true, and they find themselves swept up in the crazy schemes of a rogue AI in a stolen robot body and her haphazardly assembled team of disparate aliens, including a hive-minded swarm, a giant insect, a rabbit-like alien, and a living spaceship who loves bunnies. Together the team must break into an abandoned science station, mangled by an entangled particle trying to destroy the universe. When disaster strikes, Clarity steps up to pull the team together, but it may come at the cost of the very home and friendship she was trying to save. Don't miss this space opera full of unique and unforgettable aliens, and a universe full of adventure. Perfect for fans of classic Space Opera, from Star Wars to Firefly.
Mary E. Lowd is a prolific science-fiction and furry writer in Oregon. She's had more than 180 short stories and a half dozen novels published, always with more on the way. Her work has won numerous awards, and she's been nominated for the Ursa Major Awards more than any other individual. She is also the founder and editor of Zooscape. She lives in a crashed spaceship, disguised as a house and hidden behind a rose garden, with a large collection of animals, both real and imaginary, who collectively serve as her muse.
I hadn't run into either author or narrator before, but I know that Aethon (a small, start-up-publisher run by two Scifi writers) keeps coming up with winning books and audios. First I fell in love with the narrator, Sierra Kline! Then I downloaded the book! Even though I'd only listened for the briefest snippet, Sierra Kline didn't let me down! Her narration performance was sublime. Next I fell in love with the story's protagonist, Clarity. It was simply a matter of meeting her first mate Irohann, to fall in love a third time! Irohann's an alien who looks like a canid complete with red fur an a waggling tail (OMG, tell me that's not a Clifford Easter-egg). In order to keep her home (which happens to be her precious starship) "afloat", Clarity has to find paying passengers quick, what she ends up with is a motley group. Starting with an AI, and several other races of aliens, no one the same and each with attributes which will help the AI perform a rescue mission... and along the way we end up finding a Starwhal (think Narwhal... then think Star Trek... the Space Whale)! What's not to love?!? I know that Mary E Lowd has to be a Space Opera/Scifi geek! My guess, she's read Startide Rising, David Brin's magnificent work. And maybe even Vonda McIntyre's underrated book Superluminal. It's possible the she's also read Jen Foehner Wells Fluency series too. Well enough speculation. What I do know is... If you love a fun space adventure, weird aliens, animals, or any of the authors I mentioned, you're sure to enjoy this! This is a great example of character driven plot! And yes these assorted Aliens have to work out their differences with each other before they can even attempt the rescue! Whoo Hoo!
This book is excellent. It's unique, fun, and exciting. The main character, Clarity, is a hero unlike most others, from her obsession with dolls to her intense platonic friendship with her shipmate.
In fact, almost all the characters are fascinating and unique, and it's a joy to learn more about them. I only wish we had more time with them, but hopefully that's what the sequel is for!
My only real issue with the book is that the middle loses the thread of the plot. There's a long time spent on a planet that has nothing to do with the plot that's been building. Some of the character development is good there, but it's just too long a interruption in what is otherwise a very tightly-woven plot.
Still, I'm looking forward to the sequel. Already preordered it. I can't wait to learn more about this diverse cast and universe.
Clarity is an older human, which made me happy. She isn't perfect or superhuman. She's a 50-year-old woman who gets angry, scared, and likes alien dolls. The world building is great, the story is engrossing, and the aliens are believable and fascinating. I'm glad book 2, The Entropy Fountain, will be out January 5, 2021, because I'm looking forward to the crew's further adventures.
A touching and witty novel with unconventional characters and surprising depth.
Clarity, a green-haired and middle-aged human, has lived and travelled with Irohann for thirty years. When money woes force them to consider taking passengers as well as cargo, Wisper – a sapient robot – comes along with an offer that's too good to be true.
I've been wanting to read this book since it first came out six months ago. But since it's in the ironically named Kindle Unlimited, it seemed I'd never get the chance. But I recently got my little paws on a review copy. And I'm so glad I did.
This book has it all: an adorable organic spaceship, sapient bunnies, an aro-ace QPR, a multiracial lesbian couple, and a race against the clock to save the entire universe. All the heart and plenty of wit to boot.

Clarity and Irohann live on ship. They travel the galaxy and enjoy each other’s company. After some time together, they run into money troubles. Irohann wants to sell the ship, but Clarity loves her ship and tries to find a quick way to make money.
Of course, as soon as she puts out that she is open for passengers, she gets a request that is too good to be true. She is to purchase a specific robot, sounds easy right? Nope, the robot has a piece of rebel AI. And has a plan of her own. This leads them across the galaxy meeting unique individuals like a ‘man’ made up of all sorts of insects and a rabbit-man pilot. It is a great unique take on a space opera.
Really enjoyed this book. It felt a little bit different to most sci-fi, and that was really refreshing to read. The characters and setting were both fascinating. The main crew were fantastically diverse - with one (many?) literally being a sapient swarm of insects. I feel like the story didn't always properly convey the stakes as much as it could have done, but otherwise I can't think of much that could be considered a negative. I definitely recommend this for any fans of sci-fi who want something a little different.
Team of diverse aliens on mission to save universe
Good fun space opera adventure with team of different looking and sounding aliens with a living spaceship on a mission to save universe. The main character is Clarity (story from her POV) a 50-year-old woman but in this universe humans live up to 200 and she acts more like 25. Just wonder where book 2 will go after a mission to save universe. Sierra Kline did very good job narrating this book
What a surprise i thought I will give it a go and I am so glad I did. You soon learn the characters and what the story involves and you just want to read, then read some more and well just one more page and before you know it you have finished and thinking is there another follow on book yet. I am lucky I came in late and believe there is another volume. Read and enjoy
I read a lot of Science fiction and in about fifty of reading this is the most different and enjoyable experience I have had. Please read this book it you like live space ships and many different aliens from flies to flowers 💐 and heroes where you didn't expect them
I enjoyed this story, but in the middle of book author lost steam and just kind of let plot slide then picked back up to finish the story very well. The Main character Clarity is a unique person with love of dolls, Dedicated to her shipmates, always tries to put all the ones she cares about first. I Love Cassidy and her bunny obsession!!
Optimistic scifi at its finest! I loved stepping into Lowd’s space opera adventure, from the fascinating furry aliens to the sentient starwhal space ship, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy. I’m glad the next book is sitting on my desk!
