How to Improve Study Habits

Rate this book
For students 13 through college graduation, Christine Reidhead's guide to building study skills is an extremely important book for those who want to secure their future through good grades. Too many students' grades are falling, especially in a time when regular classrooms cannot fully open. Parents everywhere are at a loss regarding what to do with their responsibilities in the face of the increasing downturn in their children's grades. It seems as though, with the advent of social media, the attention of a lot of students has been shifted from their books to their smartphones or computers. Apart from social media, blame has also been put on a decline in the interest of students regarding education in general. Students, at the moment, do not have the motivation or zeal, as it seems, to even study. Good study habits, or skills, are solutions to the problems experienced by students. This has been true for a long time, but the world is changing rapidly, which also means that the tools employed during study have to be changed in order to keep up. This is especially true as a result of the covid-19 pandemic that has forced students to study and learn from home rather than in the classroom. E-Learning, or online learning, can be effective, but only if the student has the discipline and drive to succeed using the tools and materials they are provided by teachers. Without strong study skills the student will fall behind in the classroom. Online the failure to develop good study skills can be devastating, leading to an inability to achieve the success in life the student could otherwise achieve. This excellent guide walks students through skills and habits which a student, or a person, employs while studying in order to make the most out of the experience. The kind of skills employed by a person, whether good or bad, determines how successful they will be in the process of learning, and Reidhead shows how to understand study skills, discover what kind of learner you are, develop great study skills, avoid bad study habits, identify the best places to study, and how to keep up with Online Learning during the current ovid-19 pandemic. It also helps parents and students to identify when certain students are studying excessively, harming the effectiveness of their studying. This is a must book for students who want good grades. Both a guide and a self-help book, it can help any student of any age, middle school through graduate school, succeed in their classes whether they are held in a classroom or online.

While it has been a good few years now since I was a student and studying myself, as a self-employed freelancer in control of my own schedule and responsible for my own motivation I still got a lot out of reading this. Christine certainly knows what she’s talking about; her clear passion for education and desire to help students achieve their greatest potential shines through every thoughtfully written chapter, and I can see this being an excellent reference tool for both high school and university students alike.

We all know that individual students learn and retain information in different ways, and Christine offers a helpful overview of the different types of learners and the best study techniques to implement for success. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to studying, but thanks to Christine’s detailed explanations, quizzes and tools, students are able to easily identify the methods of learning that work best for them, a uniquely tailored approach to studying tips rather than a ‘one size fits all’ take.

Given the current Covid-19 pandemic, which has seen increasing numbers of students attending classes online and requiring additional parental support, Christine’s words of wisdom cannot have come at a better time. Students are finding themselves more responsible than ever for their own learning, and thanks to the distractions of social media self-motivation certainly doesn’t come easy! This book will, I’m sure, be an invaluable tool in the months to come, clearly and concisely explaining valuable study habits to put into place and how to self-asses while away from the classroom.

Motivational and encouraging without being overwhelming in any way, Christine has provided an excellent guide for any student requiring a little assistance and support with their learning. With clear, actionable tips and tricks and a wealth of additional material such as study planners, timetables, and organisational materials, this book will help any struggling student get back on track, achieve their goals and attain academic success – highly recommend!

This book has a simple approach to studying. That is not to say that it does not tacking important subject matter. For instance, the book acknowledges the current pandemic and its effects on students’ ability to focus on learning. The material also considers that each student learns differently and there must be ways for every student to study and learn.
It does not - and this is important - it does not promise a quick fix for studying, instead it tries to introduce new skills, not techniques, to ensure students develop the habit of learning efficiently. The inclusion of review sections helps students to immediately implement anything learned, showing how easy making these new habits can be.
Though the material excludes those with learning disabilities and those unable to have online classes, the insistence on knowing students' learning preferences shows the author leans more toward the side of the student than just the varied learning institutions.
The author makes an effort relay that grades are not the end goal of studying as it will not be enough of a motivator. Therefore, the book does not focus on studying for study sake, but notes how important diet and water intake is to the function of the body and brain. The fact that excessive study is also addressed shows that the author is aware that there is not such thing as ‘not enough studying’. Finally, it must be said that, though most of the information has been shared before, some of the extra advice given, is not something found in most other study help books.
My favourite sentence: "When you start dreaming about studying, then it’s appropriate to call that a nightmare."

How to Improve Study Habits is a great book if you are interested to know how you can be a great student and get some tips on how to do so. I like the way Christine Reidhead explains and how the book is full of solutions so that we can strengthen our study habits. Are you ready to get some tips and have good grades even with Covid around?
Christine uses a simple language and provides us with several explanations so that even though you are quite new in this area you won’t feel overwhelmed. For me, I think it is really important to use flashcards and take good notes during the classes. It is not important to note everything that the teacher says, only the most essential and it is vital that it makes sense when you are re-reading. « Sadly, there are no shortcuts to success. If you are experiencing anxiety tied to your academics, the best thing you can do is look for ways to improve your grades. When grades rise, the spirit of the person will also rise, and anxiety will decrease.”
Christine has done an extensive research to write this book. You will be able to see that the author has an extensive knowledge on this matter and that she tries to make things easier. The author teaches us how to have confidence and be the ultimate student with the best grades and a ground knowledge, either when you study at home, at the library or in a coffeeshop.
I recommend this book as it is inspiring and well written. I enjoyed how the author keeps encouraging us to move on and work in a team. It is breath of fresh air!

Timely Release!
Teaching and studying have never been easy, and COVID-19 has made this even worse. With pandemics like this, there is very little we could do rather than adapting and surviving. E-learning or online learning is one such paradigm change that we encountered recently, and author Christine Reidhead has done a remarkable job by releasing such a timely creation “How to Improve Study Habits”
The book would be equally important to both students and teachers, and the author presents content on many important areas such as Study Skills, Types of learners, Time management, and also few topics on excessive studying. The book will help students of any age, with its simple and easy to follow writing style, and I felt the book was of perfect length as well. It was a great self-help book, and let me conclude by quoting the author herself. “The way we study and how well we strategize for our study is important. Taking notes is not enough. Without adequate study skills to effectively internalize information, we are left in the same position prior to our studying.”
Highly recommended!

“How to improve good study habits” by Christine reidhead, is a very true depiction of her love to help people especially children. This book has been written by her to help students get through good grades easily and in a systemic way. For this, the book proves to be an informative illustration of identifying one’s own self’s way of learning in a better way and improving the way of studying from home since Covid-19 has greatly changed the way of teaching. It greatly focus on the study habits student have and how they can be self-assessed. For fulfilling these objectives, quizzes have also been provided in this book. Once habits through which a student can perceive the knowledge more efficiently, are identified, techniques for using those habits to manage study tasks, have also been discussed so that students can get benefit from it.

This is an excellent book for students either developing new approaches to study habits or re-calibrating the ones that they have. This can be an overwhelming task to embark on for a lot of us because we have approaches that have become familiar and routine, and at least we’ve come to believe they are the best way to go. What Christine Reidhead offers the readers with this book is a chance to rebuild our perspective from the ground up.

What makes it effective is the simple, straightforward approach that emphasizes first becoming aware of what we’re already doing to affect our success. While young people are often given guidance on what they should be doing to achieve good grades, some of this guidance tends to be a little overly simplistic. “Work hard, take notes, apply yourself”, etc. With this book, the new student can makes conscious, deliberate decisions about everything from where to study, when to study, and who to study with. Reidhead highlights the things which the student should factor in as they do this, making every part of the study process a conscious decision customized for maximum impact. There is nothing complicated about the approach, but many of the things that can have a major influence on concentration and memory are not properly considered when we dive into intensive study sessions, and this book fills that gap.

Through nine chapters, the student gets to review the major critical factors affecting learning and helps streamline their process. The book discusses ways to organize information and set goals, learning styles and specific methods to cater to the different varieties (an especially overlooked topic by many students), and finally the skills that come after these foundational items are taken into consideration. Of course you shouldn’t continue to do anything if you’re not seeing benefits, and the book highlights this flexible approach, encouraging “trial periods” for your new routine, and criteria for determining if it’s working. Bad habits are highlighted and cautioned against, as well as the somewhat elusive effect our environment itself can have on our study abilities.

Finally, Reidhead discusses how overdoing your study session, or committing the cardinal sin of cramming, can be detrimental, and the importance of being able to recognize when it’s time to take a break. The key reoccurring word is discipline, which is the element the student must bring to the table. With this excellent book, which also includes a planner and comprehension quizzes, the student can assemble all of the tools they need and apply that discipline as they create a personalized technique to truly work smarter, rather than harder. This book is an excellent gift or personal resource for any student, and will continue to pay off the more its’ lessons are put into play. I highly recommend it.

Education has become a critical aspect in the society where children secure a future using
good grades. The problem is that the mandate had been left with the teachers to ensure that the
children studied smart and performed exemplary well. With the COVID-19 protocols, schools
have been closed and children must stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus. At home,
there are all sorts of entertainment gadgets, and parents cannot push their children like the
teachers do, the consequence is loss of interest in education and poor grades. Reidhead in her
book How to Improve Study Habits, outlines ways that parents and children could use to
improve their study habits when using e-learning and online applications to study. Reidhead also
emphasizes on discipline for the children to stick to studying when using computers and are on
the internet. Skills and habits should be a priority, and the book is perfect for that because it
guides the children to discover themselves, by helping them determine what kind of learners they
are, and their bad habits to help them develop good study habits. The book is a must read for all
students and parents, to help the children to improve their grades and discipline during studying.

This pandemic has affected our lives in unprecedented ways. Schools and colleges have been closed and online lecturing become new normal. But this also comes with many drawbacks. We are now dragged more and more into the internet and social media. This affects our attention span. The method of teaching was not changed, only the medium was changed. The transition from classroom to virtual learning was not smooth and this created numerous problems. Falling behind grades are not acceptable. This quick guide devise a perfect plan to overcome these problems.

It does not offer any shortcuts. In fact, the author herself specifies that success does not have any shortcuts neither the learning. What we can do is to build a discipline by understanding our uniqueness.

Learning how to learn is an integral part of this transformation. The author focuses on this part from the beginning itself. It also has a worksheet where we can assess ourselves and know where we stand. The next part is developing the right study skills. One important feature of this book is, the author has included a chapter about excessive studying and its adverse effects. This chapter is unique and essential. This helps us not to fall into that trap.

The last chapter discusses about online learning. I found this one most useful. Because I was struggling to keep up with online learning for some time. Every concept is explained with the utmost clarity. They are also illustrated through examples for better understanding. I loved this approach from the author. Also, there is a bonus planner at the end.

In a nutshell, this is quite a useful and handy guide for all students and parents.
