에도 시대 연작 소설 '미야베 월드' 제2막 11권, '미시마야 변조괴담' 두번째 이야기. "흑백의 방에서는 이야기를 하고 버리고, 듣고 버리는 것이 규칙입니다." <화차>, <모방범>, <외딴집>의 작가, 사회파 추리소설의 여왕 미야베 미유키가 들려주는 오싹하면서도 아련한, 백 가지 기이한 이야기.
에도 간다에 있는 미시마야는 장신구와 주머니를 파는 주머니 가게이다. 비록 역사는 오래되지 않았지만, 주인 이헤에와 안주인 오타미의 부지런한 연구와 노력으로 지금은 에도에서 이름난 주머니 가게들과 어깨를 나란히 하고 있다. 이 미시마야에는 멋스러운 주머니 이외에도, 아는 사람은 알고 모르는 사람은 모르는 또 하나의 명물이 있다. 주인 이헤에가 최근에 재미를 붙인 특별한 도락으로, 실제로 있었던 괴담을 모으는 괴담 대회이다.
이야기를 하는 장소는 미시마야 한편에 마련된 '흑백의 방'. 본래는 검은 돌과 흰 돌로 바둑을 두는 곳이지만, 지금은 세상에 존재하는 온갖 진귀한 이야기들을 '흑백'의 구분 없이 청해 듣는 장소가 되었다. 이야기를 하는 사람은 한 번에 한 명. 그리고 이야기를 듣는 이 역시도 단 한 명이다. 바로 이헤에의 조카딸인 꽃다운 나이의 소녀 오치카이다.

Miyuki Miyabe (宮部みゆき Miyabe Miyuki) is a popular contemporary Japanese author active in a number of genres including science fiction, mystery fiction, historical fiction, social commentary, and juvenile fiction.
Miyabe started writing novels at the age of 23. She has been a prolific writer, publishing dozens of novels and winning many major literary prizes, including the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize in 1993 for Kasha and the Naoki Prize in 1998 for Riyū [The Reason] (理由). A Japanese film adaptation of Riyû, directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, was released in 2004.

I don't usually read historical novels set in Japan before the 1868 Meiji Restoration (after 1868, Japan rapidly became a "Western" type nation i.e. Imperialism+colonization).
Reasons? Because the Edo period (1603-1868) Japan had a COMPLETELY different culture than what I'm familiar with today.
The system of the society was different, e.g. the names/system of the "police" as we know today, or all the "four occupations(士農工商)" systems, how people wore their hair, or even the meaning of kimono. They're all changed. And because of this, I had a hard time imagining what's going on in the book.
(come to think of it, if it were set in Elizabethan England or Regency era (like Jane Austen novels! <3), I don't have any problem... hmmm I wonder why. Maybe because the modern-day England and the England that I read in those books don't sound that different from each other.)
But I like Miyuki Miyabe's historical novel. She does explain things in detail, but not too much to put me off from reading. Her characters have characteristics that's not too modern-sounding (or dare I say "woke"), yet likable.
(It occurred to me that most of the historical novel written by her (and the ones I've read so far) have a headstrong yet compassionate young girl as the main character. And a bit of a supernatural added to the mix.)
This book had those too. There were some parts that were slightly boring for me but overall, I loved this book. Especially, when I read the 3rd story, I cried my eyes out. Who would've thought that the story about the haunted house could make me cry so hard? (I hope that's not too much of a spoiler...)
Now I understand what the title あんじゅう meant.

4話ともおもしろくて読み始めたらあっという間だった。読み終えて表紙見ると切ない気持ちになる。登場人物が増えてきて賑やかな感じも楽しくて良い。
