Steve volunteers to help a bank in Paris investigate the unexpected death of a former colleague. His only clue is Margot’s missing laptop and its connection to her investigation of money laundering by a hostile foreign government to influence elections.
The global pandemic forces Steve and Amanda to join millions of people canceling travel plans, and he works remotely from Maine to solve the mystery of Margot’s death. His search for the truth leads him down a perilous path to the owner of a numbered account in Cyprus.
What a great read and the photos are a pleasant surprise! As a native born Maniac, now living in the Great Lakes region of the Midwest, I was thrilled to stumble upon this talented and gifted author! He makes the reader understand the complex world of bank fraud while adding romance, drama, and mystery. A nod to our current world pandemic situation definitely enhanced this scenario! I highly recommend this author and look forward to reading more of his books!
This story begins in January, 2020, when Steve Wilson learns that Margot Dubois, a young Paris bank auditor that he had once mentored, has died suddenly from causes unknown. Her laptop computer is missing.
When the COVID lockdown sets in, Steve and his girlfriend, Maine-based FBI agent Amanda Smith, take refuge in Maine. They work together on a complex insider-trading case, and Steve continues to explore the activities of the Paris bank and the circumstances surrounding Margot's death. The epidemic cramps his style somewhat---he no longer flies back and forth across the country for meetings with clients---but the bulk of his work can be carried out online. He has his boat transported from Florida to Maine so that he and Amanda can enjoy the Maine coast during the summer. The book gives a week-by-week accounting of their activities in 2020, suggesting once again that there can be life after retirement.
Plot was fine but had difficulty coping with style of writing. Very stilted. Lacked all emotion-more like some form of report. Pity as it could have been quite suspenseful. Boat location as a home offered a lot of potential but was overlooked..
Odd but very interesting crime novel. Excellent stories of money laundering in various countries during the first year of the Covid pandemic. Some very pertinent descriptions of how people work from home and function with businesses closing down, masks.... Good boat story too, the author clearly knows this world within a world. I also enjoyed the pictures inserted of the locations described and the fedora hat drawing....I am not used to pictures in digital novels anymore. However in paper books often there were prints in novels... so I enjoyed this detail greatly!
This story begins as the world begins to lockdown in the wake of the COVID epidemic. When Steve Wilson learns of the sudden death of Margaret Dubois, a band auditor in Paris, and her laptop is missing, he initiates an investigation from his boat in Boothbay Maine as they also investigate an inside-trader case as well. Throughout the book, Steve connects the missing laptop to an elaborate money laundering scheme by a foreign government to influence elections. I think the author tied together the two cases in an interesting way and I was surprised at the complexity of the bank fraud which made it a little difficult to follow as I listened to the book.
What a cool book! As someone who has spent time every summer (except for summer of 2020) on an island off of Boothbay, I really enjoyed reading about Steve and Amanda working on the murder mystery here. This was a page turner for me! You can tell the author definitely has spent time around the different locations the book takes place too.
I loved the book and the story line. I laughed every time anything was mentioned about 'covid'. We all know now that it was all fake as I did when it was happening. I truly hope you didn't take the vaccine.
I did not particularly enjoy this book. It sounded very interesting and maybe it was the narration that spoiled it for me but I found myself struggling to finish it. It’s narrated by “virtual voice” which is absolutely awful. I don’t know who decided this is a good way to have books narrated but it doesn’t work at all. The emphasis is in all the wrong places and don’t get me started on the mispronunciation of words. I don’t even remember what it was about because I kept zoning out while listening.
