Kindred Tales #30

The Priestess and the Thief

Rate this book
Ellilah is a priestess…but not a very good one. She doesn’t seem to have the right temperament for quiet meditation. And even worse, she broke her vow of chastity at the Christmas party after a dark stranger drugged her punch. Now she’s being sent to the Priory of Extreme Atonement—an ominous place with no windows and daily beatings.

But Elli has always had a mind of her own. Instead of handing herself over for punishment, she goes on a quest to find a cure for the old Priestess Superior who is dying.

Elli’s quest will take her to the Tenebrian Court and put her in great danger…which is why the Goddess sends her some help in the form of the very same dark stranger who drugged her punch in the first place.

Roke is half Havoc—a Kindred-like race of males who refuse to bond with females. He is none too pleased at being sent to protect the little priestess, but he doesn’t dare disobey the Goddess. Once he meets Elli again, however, he feels an instant attraction to her. He goes with her to the dangerous Tenebrian Court to protect her from the predatory nobles—especially the rapacious Crown Prince who insists that everyone “Mirror” his erotic activities at supper every night.

Will the two of them be able to complete their quest and leave the Court alive? Will Roke admit he wants to bond with Elli, even though he has sworn never to take a bride? And will Elli ever forgive herself for breaking her vow of chastity with the dark warrior?

Evangeline Anderson is a registered MRI tech who would rather be writing. And yes, she is nerdy enough to have a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing.” Honk if you see her! She is thirty-something and lives in Florida with a husband, a son, and two cats. She had been writing erotic fiction for her own gratification for a number of years before it occurred to her to try and get paid for it. To her delight, she found that it was actually possible to get money for having a dirty mind and she has been writing paranormal and Sci-fi erotica steadily ever since.

I put off reading this book for a long time because I found the premise disgusting. The love interest is a man who, in the previous book, roofied and molested what is essentially a nun. The prospect of him being someone I'm supposed to root for in this book just grossed me out, so I delayed reading this for a long time. Releasing this book several years into the #MeToo era feels shockingly tone deaf, especially from an author who makes most of the men in this series feminists.

The protagonist is severely punished for the "transgression" she committed while she was roofied, which the purported love interest never gave a second thought about. Then came what really pissed me off - when he learns about how much his actions affected her life and the severe consequences she is facing, he offers no more than a cursory apology, and the whole conversation takes up only a single page in the book, and they never speak of it again. He never even thinks about it again after that moment. He expresses no deep remorse, experiences no real growth as a character, and just gets to move on with his charmed life, as the perpetrators of sexual assault too often do.

The rest of the book is fine, but I found this piece of their shared history hard to move past, and it overshadowed the rest of the book for me. I have come to expect more from Evangeline Anderson, so it was particularly disappointing to see her use this plot as the impetus for a love story at all, but it was especially egregious to see the man felt no remorse and suffered no consequences for his actions. I feel this was irresponsible writing, and we should all strive to do better.

This was such a fun read. I always have such a laugh over the food and animal descriptions, the author has a great imagination.
A priestess in training and a smuggler, talk about opposites or are they really. She's being punished, but heads off on her own mission. The Goddess has ordered him to save her on several occasions and he's the cause of her punishment.
Such an adventure they had together, her vows went out the window. What is her destiny if not what she promised?
The Goddess will set them both on the right path...that's after they survive another planet and danger.
Entertaining series, I highly recommend it.

The Priestess and the Thief by Evangeline Anderson is about a perilous quest that started with an incident in the novel Secret Santa Surprise. Ellilah, our heroine, is a priestess, something she is definitely unsuited for. Roke, our hero, is the thief who created the problem in Secret Santa Surprise. As a punishment for breaking her vows of chastity, she is to be sent to the Priory of Extreme Atonement, a place of daily beatings. But, when she learns a cure for the Wasting Sickness suffered by the old Priestess Superior can be found in the Palace of the Crown Prince on the same planet, her quest begins.
In the quests of ancient heroes such as Ulysses, once the quest starts, the hero goes through a series of adventures full of fearful events. The reader always thinks each one is the last, wondering if the hero will finish the quest or die. Ellilah, with the help of Roke, goes through the same. Just when you’re sure everything is falling apart, she succeeds and we expect her to be given the cure. But there’s another event to be faced after that one. With each one, her feelings of breaking her vows of chastity become stronger and fears for her life increase. Even though she’s very distraught, she keeps going for the sake of the old Priestess Superior’s life. Ms. Anderson increases the tension until the very end. Of course, I couldn’t stop reading!
You will meet some of the original Kindred and their brides since some of the novel takes place on the Mother Ship. You will recognize the steamy scenes and twists Ms. Anderson is famous for. You’ll find out the reference to “mirroring”. And you’ll read a novel that could become one of your favorites, as it is mine.

Evangeline has crafted another insular culture with strict rules of society. Two in this case, with opposing values regarding sexuality. This is a slower burn than her usual story line. There's instant attraction but they're slower to act on it than I'm used to in an Evangeline Anderson book. I like it. I always like when she comes up with a new animal, and was quite interested in the description of the zorels, which seem to be a type of hippa-zoo (horse-animal in Greek), in this case a dragon/horse combo, with varying degrees of pedigree and ability to blow flame.

There's an editing error evident from 27% on. It appears that Roke was initially named Rone in the first draft, then Evangeline (or her editor) realized that Rone was the name of a main character in book 16: Forgotten, so they did a Find and Replace to change Rone to Roke. Except the word throne contains "rone" and so now all 16 instances of the word throne are changed to thRoke. For some reason, none of the advance reviewers caught this. Did they even read the book?

Cut from a different cloth
I am so glad that we did not have to wait too long for this addition to the Kindred Tales series! The last book left everything up in the air with Elli and I was so hoping that she would get her HEA. The author did not disappoint with this story. She took our heroine through so many trials to get to the prize at the end, but the Goddess made sure she was with who she needed to be to keep her safe, accomplish her goal and find that elusive happiness we all strive for. This author always brings me the best stories and leaves me wanting for more, this book is no different and yet again I find myself hoping the wait is not too long for the newest Goddess blessed romance.

This is a wonderful read that I thoroughly enjoyed
Elli is a priestess that is learning everything there is to know and she finds herself in difficulty when she is on the Mothership and she is attending a party on board and she finds herself inadvertently drinking something that causes her to undergo a change that could never have been conceived.
A half Beast Kindred who had nothing to do with the drink being doctored finds himself in ignorance of the doctored drink. However, when Roke finds himself following the Goddess and her wisdom that desires that he assist her as they endeavour a cure for her elder.
This is a story that is filled with action and adventure and plenty of surprises and as always you will be left waiting earnestly for the next book to come along.

A sci-fi romance with plenty of heat and a guaranteed happily ever after (HEA). But to get that HEA the two main characters will go through a lot. We met them both briefly in the previous book at the Christmas Party. Elli is a priestess who hasn’t taken her final vows. But it seems that no matter what she does she is always breaking a vow or rule. The high priestess will make sure she learns the hard and painful way if she has a chance. Roke is a thief and has enjoyed the life but the Goddess has new plans for him. The story will take you on a wild, hot and sometimes embarrassing ride. I loved the addition of the zorels. A beautiful and smart animal that I hope we read about again.

Elli, a priestess in training, was in a wrong place - wrong time scenario at a Christmas party on the Mother ship and unknowingly ingested something that would alter her path in ways she could never imagine.
Roke, a half Beast Kindred was involved but unaware of all of the trouble his actions would cause.
The Goddess, in all of her wisdom, insists that the Kindred assist the young priestess in her quest to find a cure for a beloved elder.
The journey is filled with many surprises and revelations that cast a new light on past beliefs.
Can they both rise above their fears and uncertainties to face how they truly feel before it's too late?
Fantastic story of acceptance and how freeing being in love is.

*Slight Spoiler* When this book was first introduced in the last novel, I was not sure if I was going to like it. But, I should've known better because Evangeline Anderson HAS NEVER written a bad book. This novel was so good! I loved how they met and came together and her ability that set her apart from everyone else. A very very very good read.

One of my favorite kindred takes thus far 💖🔥

This has to be one of my favorite takes thus far in the kindred universe! Roke is a thief and smuggler and
was responsible for drugging the Christmas lunch with an aphrodisiac. This is where he meets his little priestess in training for the first time. He texts out the drug and become addicted to the beautiful innocent beauty. But he is half kindred half havoc and he doesn't believe imaging or bonding a female to him. Especially after what happened to his own father. Elli has always been a passionate young woman who desires to be loved and raise her beloved Zorels a half Dragon horse animal. Because of a private moment and a vindictive step mother she finds herself promised to be a priestess to the goddess but her heart in not into it. He life on the mother ship is difficult and when she breaks her vows of chastity when she was drugged. Now she finds herself being punished and forced to stone for her sins. What she finds is a quest to cure the old priestess so that the new evil one trying to take her place can not. And as we know the goddess works in mysterious ways and she sends Roke to add her in her quest. These two find so much more than a cure. They find live, acceptance and passion that ignites the soul. This was a fabulous addition to the series and I'm so happy picked up a copy, loved it. Highly recommend🔥💖🔥💖💖💖🔥🔥💖💖🔥🔥💖💖🔥🔥💖💖🔥🔥💖💖🔥🔥💖💖💖🔥💖🔥🔥🔥💖💖🔥🔥💖💖🔥💖🔥💖🔥🔥💖🔥💖💖🔥💖🔥🔥💖💖🔥💖🔥💖🔥🔥

Haven’t listened to a new Kindred Tale in a long time. Fun. I had forgotten about “honey well” and “you… you won’t?”, “numalla” and “Goddess pearl”. (And my friend’s least favorite “C*** Honey”)
Those common phrases that remind you that this is a kindred story.

This female is like, a VIRGIN virgin. Doesn’t even know how to touch herself. She was raised that any good sexual feeling is bad and then moved to the priestesshood. She needed baby steps though every level of their sexual journey. HEY EVANGELINE!! Write me a guy like this please. An innocent hot dude who needs to be gently led, step by step. I thought we would get that with “Unleashed by the Defender” but… nope.

Write me a guy like Elli.

I hope this Goddess ends up with a storyline. In each book she takes a bigger and bigger part in the story. Now, nothing in the story needs to build to a logical conclusion, you just throw in the Goddess where you need her. She tells people in power who to believe. She tells warriors who to rescue and where. And she reverses irreversible decisions. This is a cheap party trick unless it leads up to a storyline where it is revealed why the Goddess has been so actively manipulating outcomes.

Ellilah is a priestess aboard the mothership, but she should never been selected. All her life she had grown up with her brothers and father doing everything any other young boy would do (afterall, who wants to do girly things just because you are a girl!). That is until her father remarries to a wicked stepmother. Blackmailed into embarrassment, Ellialah is sent to the mothership for her "bad" behaviour and is to study to become a priestess. Restless, curious and not feeling like she belongs Ellilah wanders to mix in at a Kindred Christmas party and this is where the party really starts.
Roke is our hero of the story, but he certainly doesnt start that way. He tricks Ellilah into sampling a strong aphrodisiac and her vows of chastity are broken. As punishment she is sent away to Priory of Extreme Atonement. Its here that she learns of a cure for the Wasting Sickness that her beloved old priestess is dying from. Roke, feeling bad for kissing the young priestess decides he needs to atone for his part in her punishment.
There is so much for to this story, but who wants a spoiler. Grab the book yourself and read all about their story.

The Priestess and the Thief: Kindred Tales 30-Evangeline Anderson

This Kindred Tales picks up on Elli’s story after she went a little to far with a mixed breed Kindred who spiked the punch at the holiday party.
Her behavior put her in trouble with the priestess training program. The head of the program is very into punishments and Elli is also curious why no one is trying to find a cure for the wonderful previous leader who is dying of a strange wasting disease. At this point Elli wonders if she is really cut out to be a priestess and she would be wise to follow her heart. Rather than meekly going to the horrid Place the new Mother Superior sends her to Elli decides to make her own path and find a cure for the old Mother Superior.
Roke is a hybrid Kindred believing he has no soul and is a bit of a an alpha bad boy.
Roke and Elli’s journey is filled with many dangerous and crazy filled with unexpected surprises, soul searching, revelations and steamy scenes. Readers will be glued to the entertaining exciting page turning book filled with all the wonderful elements The Kindred Tales are known for.

I really loved this story. I'm so glad we got to read Elli's story after what happened in Secret Santa Surprise. I was excitedly waiting for this book to release and it did not disappoint. I really loved the addition of the Zorels and Elli's connection with them. Poor Elli really gets put through it and is constantly questioning if what she is doing is right. I could really feel for her character. I really love her and Roke together. They have an instant connection that gets reignited when they cross paths again. Their chemistry is off the charts and I just love their inner struggles not to be together when its inevitable that they can't resist each other. There is alot of great elements to this story that constantly keeps you on your toes wondering what is gonna happen next. Overall it was an amazing book and I wish we could get an extended epliogue for their story... I need more!!! LOL. I also really loved the interactions with the Goddess in this story. Can't wait for the next book!

I had a love/not love relationship with this story. I loved Ellilah especially as she worked with the sorrels and in her devotion to the old Priestess Superior. I liked Roke and how devoted and protective her was of Ellilah and his integrity - when he was told that what he had done had hurt Ellilah and that he needed to protect her, he did not hesitate but stepped up and took his role seriously. The part I got a bit weary of was the ton of focus that was placed on the Tenebrian court’s strange and erotic customs. They were titillating but there was a lot of focus on them and I got tired of it. Other than that, I enjoyed the story.

As always this series doesn't disappoint!! I really enjoyed this story. We met Roke and Elli in the previous kindred book. Lets just say that Roke left a bad impression. I wasn't sure what to expect or how Roke was going to redeem himself. I should've known that this was going to be a helluva of adventure. Plus I always have such a good laugh over the animal and food descriptions. Overall a excellent read can't wait for more books in this series. I received a free copy via Booksprout as always my reviews are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Priestess and the Thief

Another great book in the Kindred Tales series. What happens when a novice priestess who is not meant to be a priestess goes on a quest to save the life of the Priestess Superior. She faces danger, lust, emotions and lies before she is forgiven, by the Goddess, and able to follow the path she was always meant to take. This book continues with the outcome of that one night, in the previous book, Secret Santa, when Elli drank the spiked punch, at the Mother Ship's Christmas Party, and suffered a moment of lust towards a warrior named Roke. Loved it.

Such an awesome series

I fell in love with this series way back when, I read book 1 Claimed. I admit there are a few I haven't read because they just didn't interest me . But this one, The Priestess and the Thief was one I knew I couldn't pass by. What happens when an initiate has to go against her vows and thief secretly has a wounded heart of gold? Easy, lots of heat and proof the Kindred Goddess has a reason for everything.
Not only read this book but check out the entire series. Heat, drama, action, passion....worth binge reading.

An enjoyable, sexy adventure for the holiday! A thief and a priestess in training are brought together by the Kindred Goddess to go on a quest to find a cure for an ailing priestess. They must go to a planet near Elli's home world and while there they will need to participate in some interesting activities and dinners. Elli and Roke are perfect for each other, but time will only tell if they figure it out for themselves. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Read all 56 Kindred books.

Evangeline never ceases to amaze me! I look forward to the frequent new books and once I bury my nose in it I don't much come up for air until I'm done. She has created quite a race and universe! The characters come alive on the pages and it's so easy to get engaged in whatever adventure is currently taking place. She is definitely worth reading, but be careful! You'll get addicted!!!

Elli and Roke's book was definitely one I was anxiously waiting for, the book before it had me dying to know what was going to happen with Elli. I was not disappointed in the least. I loved this story and these characters but I'm the vengeful type and wish her step mom would have gotten hers lol

Very cute

Very cute and very spicy. I loved the interaction between the Kindred and his bride. She is one of the few brides that I really liked. Not spoiled, not too headstrong at inappropriate times, and with her own skill set and shine. Sylvan and Myreck are still my favorite Kindred, but I liked the loyalty of this thief.

Ehhh this was okay...the MCs chemistry wasn't all that interesting and well the only good parts were the ridiculous things they had to do on an alien planet for the sake of SMEXY times. The heroine was a little dull though her only strong point was her ability to train Zorels. I don't know if I have been binging too much of Kindred stories but I'm beginning to see a repetitive pattern.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobooks of this title. (Goodfm)
She is on a mission, and he has sent by the Goddess herself to protect her.
It's a new culture, with a court that follows some strange ways. However, her ways with their dragon/horse animals gives her a way in, to achieve the prize she needs to rescue her dying mother priestess.

The Priestess and the thief

As per all the latest Kindred stories there is a lot of exhibition sex and male dominance. This story also had lovely bonding with the Zorel and teaching of love towards fellow creatures.
