Ever since the truce with the Kaxeks was signed, the aging United Earth Force battleship Walker Pierce has been patrolling the border areas. Captain Devlin Carter had a feeling that the truce was only a cover to allow the Kaxeks time to rebuild and improve their forces to resume the war, so he was looking for evidence. As the story unwinds, the captain and crew are stretched to their limit, facing pirates, spies, sensor anomalies that may or may not be alien ships, questionable damage/loss of fighters and pilots, disputes over policy issues, double-dealing, equipment breakdowns, systems sabotaged by shape-shifters impersonating key people and even some humorous moments. How can our heroes handle things that constantly go wrong? When the Kaxek ships move in for an attack, can older technology and ingenuity survive against new and improved alien ships? Can they continue to survive by making their own lucky breaks?
This writer team does a superb job of blending their talents to produce a well-written story with strong, deeply developed characters and vivid descriptions that make the reader feel part of what’s happening. I read for entertainment and escape, so I don’t mind stretching the laws of physics occasionally, because it makes for a good read. The action is continuous; I didn’t want to put the books down. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire series and I highly recommend it. I received an ARC for each book and for the boxset – the reviews are all my honest opinions – and I bought a copy of all four books as they were released, to support this great team.
