He's the most beautiful monster she's ever seen
Emmy Atler is desperate for a job so she can help her grandfather with his increasing medical bills. She even applies to be a maid for Jason Belmont, recluse writer, who's known more for the murder of his cheating wife and her lover than his popular thrillers. He may have gotten off on a technicality, but everyone knows he's guilty. Just because he's quiet and awkward doesn't mean he's actually innocent. Just because he treats Emmy with warmth and respect doesn't mean he's not capable of killing her with his bare hands - especially considering the fact that he lives in a secluded cabin in the woods of Lake Tahoe. Emmy can scream and no one would hear. Now, with her grandfather's health on the line and the risk of debt closing in, Emmy must do her job and ignore her growing attraction for her employer - especially if she wants to avoid risking her life for a man both brooding and fatal.
Full disclosure: I am an acquired taste. I'm a typical blonde Orange County suburbanite who says 'like' more than necessary, laughs loud and probably obnoxiously, and loves to dance in the rain. I'm a 23 year old college graduate with more than a few tricks up my sleeve, and I also happen to be a pretty big Ducks fan. Oh, and I'm a writer. Like, for real.
A Beauty Dark and Deadly is the first book I've managed to read for a long time, so bear with me.
This story is neither dark nor deadly.
I have to admit that cover and title were the reasons I was compelled to read this book, and I guess as a dark reader this book simply was too fluffy, overly sweet, and eyeroll-"dramatic" for me, and the repetition about our FL's concerns regarding the ML were just annoying. But I continued reading, telling myself that I was too strict with this book, and hoped that darkness or hotness would eventually arrive. None did.
This is a typical New Adult book, overly dramatized, with the forbidden/dangerous love vibe. A quite typical storyline with additional scenes that are meant to bring suspense or drama, which were so uninspiring to me that they left me unimpressed.
Needless to say, that I was heavily disappointed.
I would have given this book three stars if it wasn't for the plot holes to the end of the story and the epilogue which only purpose was to even the path for a sequel, (which will never come?!), with two "shocker" plot twists, which made the decision easy for me to drop this series.
As for the erotic scenes: the are being ruined by metaphors I just can't believe the author seriously used. You just do not mention a cow in any way during an erotic scene! Why would you do that?
I’m a massive fan of Beauty and the Beast retellings. There are so many out there, and yet I never grow bored of them. It’s a tale that can be told in so many different ways. You always know how it is going to end, and yet you cannot help but enjoy the ride. Thus, I was more than happy to jump upon this one.
To begin, I would like to say a massive thank you to the author for allowing me to advance read this one. I ended up on her mailing list by some unknown means and since doing so I have downloaded a number of her books. Prior to reading this, I had only managed to read one of her books – Tempting the Flesh, also known as An Education in Royalty – yet I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was no doubt that I wanted to read more, and that I’m going to read more. Despite the length of my to-read list, I have a feeling the books I have will be read sooner rather than later.
Anyway, I should get back to this read.
As I’ve already stated, I love Beauty and the Beast retellings. What I have read very few of, however, is contemporary retellings of the story. Rather than having some kind of paranormal element to it, this one is pure real world Beauty and the Beast. It’s not some hidden inner beauty on behalf of the beast, either; it’s a case of the beast being the hidden aspect. In short, our beast is a monster. A suspected murderer, let off on technicalities. How could I not be pulled in after hearing such a thing? I love anything crime related, so of course I wanted to know more about this one.
From the start, the story does pulls you in. The building romance. The mystery of whether or not our beast is guilty. The building romance. Oh wait, I said that already. But it needs saying again. It was such a fun build up. I admit that things moved a bit too quickly for my liking – but I’m simply one of those people who always complains about quick building romances. I prefer the slow build. Whilst we do see the changes in our characters, watching as their views towards each other change and they change as a person, it all happens a little bit too quickly for my liking.
Nevertheless, I was pulled into the story. You never quite knew just how it was going to end. You knew certain things would make an appearance… but the ending was a lovely surprise. Honestly, I cannot begin to go into detail when it comes to the ending. Believe me when I say you will not be disappointed by the way it turns out. It was such a poetically beautiful way of ending things, something most authors would never do.
Without a doubt, having finished and enjoyed this, Heather C. Myers has ensured that I will be reading more of her books.
Spoiler AheadThis was book 1 in the" A Dark & Deadly"series. Emmy Atler is desperate for a job so she can help her grandfather with his increasing medical bills. She even applies to be a maid for Jason Belmont, recluse writer, who's known more for the murder of his cheating wife and her lover than his popular thrillers. Jason beats the murders on a technicality he is alone and needs some help so he hires Emmy. These two have a lot of chemistry from the start. This book was dark and twisted and had some unexpected turns. Jason was a hot older man with some dark things in his past. Emmy just wants to do her job and not act on her attraction to Jason. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
What the hell did I just have to sit through. Thought about DNFing around 30% and I should have stuck with my gut. Everythinf was lackluster but enjoyable enough until... what? That ending? Why?
Also, it wasn't even a dark romance until the last 5 pages.
This book was provided free of charge from the Author in exchange for an honest review. Next week it will be up.
I hate to be honest about it, since I got it for free i will do that. It really didn't appeal to me as a reader, maybe I wasn't in the mood for a retelling of Beauty and The Beast type story in a modern form. I truly felt odd with the book itself and not the plotline. Maybe it was the modern type of retelling the book for me.
However I will give this book a second chance later this year and try and get it up on stars.
I just. This was bad. Bad writing and bad plot full of holes. I read 50% and then skimmed the rest and nothing made sense. Emmy takes this job being a maid of a potential killer (but he was released/aquitted) and somehow the entire town knows about it in 1 day? Their utter disgust of him makes no sense to me. She's supposed to cook and clean and take care of his house but he is always cooking for her and taking care of the garden. Emmy constantly reminds herself she's under threat but he's only ever nice and gentle and kind and sweet. Also, he's double her age?? I think? She's 22 and she makes a reference that he's 48? But somehow that giant age gap is never an issue, when it could've been a fun tension point. Jason's relationship with his ex-wife makes zero sense. Emmy and Jason just...suddenly hook up out of what feels like nowhere. Who the heck is Cody and how did he know where to find Emmy/Jason?! The sex scenes were distant and awkward phrases used several times in a single page. Jason has scars on his back but we never find out what they are from. Just plot hole after plot hole and weird writing where the viewpoint would shift from Jason to Emmy to outside observer within paragraphs. And the ending was just...ugh *runs palm down face* really? She's gonna murder Cody with a baseball bat and then they're gonna hide the body together because he's done this before?! Wtf. Well I guess he did kill them but what the heck was the technicality he got off on? And he hid their bodies?! What?!
The cover and description make it seem like it would be tense and edgy but it's quite a plain romance and low-stake.

Jason, a renowned writer, narrowly escaped a double murder conviction. The reader sits on edge waiting for details. Why, how? Emma, a level headed young woman gives him the benefit of doubt. Will she stay or run? Will his past forever ruin her? Oh the surprising ending leaves one wanting more.
I liked Jason & Emmy's story. It was an interesting read...but it isn't really what I'd call dark or deadly so the title is a bit misleading. I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review for a copy of the book via booksprout.
This was such a weird mix of terrible writing and beautiful writing that I’m confused. Not to mention the fact that it wasn’t dark at all... There was SO MUCH missing information. I was so tired of being in Emmys head, too... But there were some real moments in there that kept me going to the end.
“Oddly enough, it was Mr. Belmont’s nose that Emmy was fascinated with the most; it was pointed and defined, the nostrils flaring out almost like the wings of a bird.” 🤨👃🏼🕊 What?
“she found it rather baffling that the man had a voice that sounded articulate and mumbled at the same time.” 😒 Huh??
“She was sensitive to his touch, reacted to his rough skin like a cow to a brand.” 🥴🐮🚫 Just, no.
And, she also referred to her lady bits as her pelvis, which bugged me...
But then...
“the world was in his rearview mirror, and his dream had been realized but didn’t shine as bright as it once had, back when he had new eyes.” A real moment, captured so beautifully.
See? There were dumb, badly done things. But, a few shining moments...
I don’t know about “dark and deadly” since this book seems to head hop and implies that Jason didn’t kill his ex-wife and the man she was having an affair with from the beginning?
But whatever. What made me DNF this is the writing style is really strange. The book is contemporary but the writing makes it feel like a historical romance instead, which isn’t at all what I’d expect a contemporary dark romance to read like. So, DNF.
I have so many mixed feelings about this read. It has SO much potential but it fell flat, the FL is fine but rants a bit too much and it gets a bit tiresome getting reminded every five seconds ‘OH NO HE MIGHT BE A MURDERER!!’ And thats a great mystery to the story but with the few outside characters and the constant inner monologue its a bit much. The ex friend and the ex crush I feel are just pop up filler to try and add a highschool level drama that really doesn’t have much impact but ill get back to that later. There are some weird visuals and a few fixations on things that I was like weird but ok, and just glossed over sometimes weird words were used that I felt could have been changed to something better but the worst was plot points that went nowhere!
*spoilers*
Some of these points being: Jason’s scars they are mentioned maybe twice and we never go into it, she reads his books and wants to ask him questions but it’s forgotten after they get physical. Also the hints to what happened the night he found out about the affair at one point there is a line like ‘ it shattered like the wine glass did that night’ and left me wanting more but you never get it.
As for the end it felt very forced. Cody is mentioned like twice then randomly shows up magically at Jasons door after at least a year or so of not seeing Emmy and not keeping in contact, you could argue that he knew because of ex friend but I don’t buy it. Cody’s showing up and argument seems very high school and took me waay out of the moment of the book not to mention how out of left field it was. It seems like he was only there to have that shocking end that yes is shocking but it leaves me lacking. I would have preferred more character building than they have sex, more sex, were in love, oh no gramps! Then murder! I would have liked to see more into jason and have them actually bond and get closer than, i have this addiction to sex with you but I also want this lets take it a day at a time oh never mind. Also the end is a bit ironic, cody tells emmy shes let Jason change her which she disagrees then after everything she kills him and is completely chill with the whole situation and it just shows she really has changed since she kept telling us how against murder she was.
*end spoilers*
Over all not a bad free read it has some good stuff but I wish it had more than what I got.

1.5 I rarely write a review for a rating that is a so low, but felt that some things needed to be said regarding this book.
Positives: The basic storyline had some merit and could have been so much more than it was. The characters were okay, nothing noteworthy but were not horrible either. Blurb was a great teaser, but the book didn't deliver as promised. Book Cover was good
Negatives: This was an age gap novel but was not presented in the blurb as one. Characters were not properly developed and needed more backstory and lacked depth considering the content. Jason was an alleged double murderer who got off on a technicality during his trial. Storyline was very convoluted and wordy. Story was basically told from a single prospective (Emmy) The writing didn't flow well and had too many "needless fillers" that didn't add anything to the story. The sub-characters were sketchy at best and ended up playing a major part in this story. Their existence wasn't fully explained but kept popping in and out of this book. Jason needed his story to be told from his point of view and his character needed more exploration. Finally, the elephant in the room: Poor Editing
This book had so many editing issues that included the use of repetitious words in a sentence, horrible spelling, and sentence structure only to name a few, that I felt my eight year old granddaughter could have done a better job at spell checking/grammar follow-up prior to releasing this book. An author has a responsibility to the reading public to either pay someone to properly edit their work or if they do it themselves check and recheck their work prior to release. I returned the second book I got through KU of this authors' w/o reading it. As a paralegal I know the importance of reviewing content whether it be a legal document or written correspondence and was surprised and disappointed that the author felt it was ok to release something she apparently put her heart into, but failed to complete by not properly editing this book.

This was a decent read. It wasn't particularly surprising at all, no twists and turns, rather predictable really. But it was still a nice read. Decent character development, good storyline, believable worldbuilding. A story worth the read. Not dark. I mean, light gray at best, but definitely not a dark read as I was expecting when I started the book. The name and cover implied much darker than the storyline actuality is. Fair warning.
I will say, there were a few lines here and there that were just.... odd. They really threw me out of the storyline each time, and I can't fathom why the author would use such lines during spicier scenes. *spoilers* As an example, "It was like she was his oxygen, and he wanted to breathe as much as he possibly could. His lips sought after hers, kept track of them the way a father kept after his daughter. He would not let up." Why exactly the line about the daughter? Odd. Or this one, "From there, he trailed his lips downward to her neck, where her pulse beat against her skin the way boxers beat against a sack of meat. He slobbered on her skin which should have been gross but wasn't." I mean... that's not good.
Overall, I liked the book, and had it not been for weirdly off putting, randomly inserted, off the wall comparisons and the like during the middle of spicey scenes, I probably would have given it maybe 3.5 stars. As it is, I would say it's probably 2.5-3 stars, no more. That said, I think I'd be willing to read another by this author and see what else she has to offer.
I really wanted to like this book and I was enjoying it right up until the last few chapters, especially the last one. SPOILERS AHEAD! There were so many plot holes - the scars on Jason's back (we are never told how he got them), the depth of Cody and Emmy's relationship (from what we are told, they never even had a relationship - she simply had a crush on him) so why did he suddenly become so obsessed with her at the end? What was the nature of the technicality that got Jason's charges dropped? Emmy spends the whole book convincing herself that Jason won't hurt her and that he is innocent and she develops a relationship with him under the notions that he is just misunderstood but then in the literal last sentence of the book he basically confesses his guilt! I really don't like how we spent the whole book wondering, finally get the answer, and then it just abruptly ends with Emmy seemingly being completely fine with it. Ugh. I started this book intrigued and ended it just completely frustrated.
This is the first book in the series and it's an interesting start. Emmy needs a job to help pay for her grandfather's medical bills. She applies for the housekeeping job for Jason Belmont and gets the job. This should be great news however, Jason comes with a reputation. He is a reclusive writer that has been tried and beaten murder charges. He was accused of killing his cheating wife and her lover. This should not be too bad but Jason lives in a cabin which has no one around. This freaks Emmy out as no one would hear her scream for help but damn she needs the.money. Emmy puts her brave face on and goes to work. This story then unfolds as these two characters get.to know one another and their relationship changes for employer to employee to something else entirely.

It's not you... it's totally me. I am having trouble in my life. I.E. the reason it took me forever to read such a short book. My life is all messed up and to read about a guy and a woman in the middle of the woods, an interesting re-telling of beauty and the beast-ish?
The author did a wonderful job, her words were very over-the-top. Detailed, and just wonderful writing skills.
I was fascinated and the ending was very interesting, I was surprised by it, cause I didn't see it coming. (Most endings you don't!)
I thought it was a wonderful story and quite enjoyed it!
This book was okay to me, at first it didn't seem very special but I was mistaken. I am sucker for a beauty and the beast retelling, so when I found this book for free on amazon I had to download it. The story had an interesting sound to it since we would be dealing with a hero that may have killed his wife and her boyfriend but got off. The beginning was kind of slow to me and I never really felt that connected with Emmy but I did like Jason. He was so sweet with her and her grandfather and good Lord this man knew how to make love. This book packed surprises and when I finished the last line of the book my mouth was gaping with shock. Overall it is worth the read.
“You had better be careful, or else you may be next.”
Jason and Emmy characters worked very well together, the humor, the truthfulness of their conversations. The fact that Emmy is falling for Jason a man that was accused of killing his wife and her lover and was not convicted. Jason has become sort of a recluse because the town is not welcoming of him and just don't want his business so he placed an ad and Emmy applied for the position, the only one to. Duties include housework, cook, clean, and buy groceries. But now the town is also a little against Emmy now. I loved this book the ending was not what I expected, thrown of balance I was. A Must read.
This is the first book of this author’s I have read, started off well and although felt quite slow, the story did build. My thoughts kept changing throughout the book and I honestly couldn’t make my mind up whether he was innocent or not but I liked his character and wanted good things for him and Emmy so when the end came! Who’s I was not expecting that and I was so keen to get to the next book and read on and then realised that was the end! So although I really did enjoy it, there was so much not explained, about his wife, his scars, what happened before??? I ended up being disappointed 😞 I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Oh my gawd. This was so brilliantly written. I was pulled in by Emmy's quietness and her fears of Jason. I could picture the closeminded town and the gossipy people. Walking thru the store being eyeballed and whispered about. Jason with overgrown hair and his quiet ways. The building of feelings and the anticipation of sexual awareness. Emmy was so mature and composed. I was wishing this didn't end and it went on longer but the way it ended was perfect.

I quite enjoyed this story. I loved Emmy’s drive to be independent and help her grandfather with his bills. Jason is the epitome of handsome and brooding. I do detect a flair of Wuthering Heights here along with the Beauty and the Beast themes. I really enjoyed the way the mystery of whether or not Jason got away with murder or was actually innocent played along in the background of the story. The ending really came out of nowhere and didn’t feel completely connected with the rest of the book. That last line, though. That was priceless.
This is a new author to me, and I really like her writing style. This book has a great plot that held my interest throughout, it has drama, intrigue and romance. The main characters work well together, and the author has written some wonderful dialogue between the two of them. In normal circumstances the two would never have even met but life threw them together out of each of their own needs. It’s a really great story. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What I liked in this story was the last sentence and the ending. I liked the hero and heroine but I couldn't find what I was looking for in this story based on the blurb. I was expecting more twists and turns in the plot and more darkness, suspense and mystery. There are some good moments in the story line that are openings for something more to happen but somehow then the thread is just broken. I kept reading to see where would be those steamy, forbidden, dark and suspenseful moments but really couldn't find them. I give three stars for the last sentence. Good read but not very special.
Emmy needs a job that will help her pay her grandfather's medical bills. When Jason posts a job that pays more then her two jobs together she decides to go for it. Even with his past she knows if she can make it a few months in his employment she can go back to her life. What she doesn't expect is how nice he is and how he seems quiet. She can't help the rumors about him, but she wonders if the rumors are wrong? Tensions rise and fall as Emmy and Jason get to know each other. Don't miss their unforgettable experience.
I almost didn’t persevere with this book. I didn’t like the writing style at the beginning; in the middle of a paragraph it would start referring to Emmy as “the young woman” or “the woman” which was jarring. I’m not sure if this was supposed to represent the fact the characters were strangers but it just seemed like poor editing. But this disappears and then it’s an enjoyable read. The ending is what made and saved this book for me. Rarely is there a decent surprise or twist at the end but this book pulled it off.
