Enjoyable but not fabulous.

LG is my favourite HP author, based on her entire collection of work, but, like all writers, it's fair to say that occasionally, she produces a novel that's just merely average.

I haven't rated/reviewed them all on Goodreads, but I've read Lynne Graham's entire backlist and unfortunately, this one doesn't come close to her best.

After getting off to a strong start, with an awesome premise/storyline combo that immediately pulled me in, the novel started to wane a bit during the second half, due mainly to the following factors:

📍 I started to lose interest in the MC's romantic storyline because I just wasn't feeling that connection between them. Other plot related issues were emphasized, to the detriment of the MC's budding relationship.

📍 Lynne G's storytelling seemed rather perfunctory in the second half of the story, as if ( and I hate to say this because she's my fav HPlandia author ) she was in a rush to wrap up the novel. But she managed to salvage it with the reconcilation scene and the sweet epilogue, which is a testament to her skill as a veteran of HPlandia, who knows what her core fanbase loves.

📍 The consummation of the MC's relationship wasn't exactly exciting. That too seemed somewhat mechanical. As a fan who's read all of her books, I know that she's written sex scenes that are more superb, emotionally satisfying and intensely seductive.

📍 The H, Ruy, could be substituted for any number of her recent heroes. We're told that he's a hedge fund billionaire with a talent for portraiture. But that didn't quite make him unique, because he reminded me of a few of her recent heroes, even down to his dark golden eyes. 95% of LG's heroes share this trait. Lol. However, the heroine was a more unique creation. Suzy was definitely different from LG's recent heroines.

This is the H, Ruy:

This is the heroine, Suzy:

Outline and Assessment of the story/plot:

The Runaway Bride trope is the basis for this novel's storyline. Suzy, the heroine, has been blackmailed/bullied by Percy: a sexagenarian businessman in her small town. He's a lecherous, seedy and shady businessman, who ought to be thrown over a steep cliff that ends in a river of donkey diarrhea, but Suzy's dad owes him 💷50 000.

The H, who's bought a house in the district, is entranced by Suzy's ethereal beauty, when he sees her dancing in his nieces' recital at the local town assembly. He decides immediately, that she's the perfect subject for his next painting.

She thinks he's joking because she doesn't know that he's a billionaire, so she laughs at the offer and is more concerned about her upcoming wedding to the odious Percy. Percy realizes that the H is attracted to Suzy and behaves like an uncouth buffoon.

Despite her hatred and loathing for Percy, the heroine is determined to go ahead with the wedding because she doesn't want her dad to lose his pub. But Percy, like all uncontrollable and jealous bullies, couldn't hold his temper in check and ended up beating the heroine because he'd seen her talking to the H.

This opened her eyes to the severity of her situation and she finally realized that she couldn't marry such an abusive pig.

That's where the runaway bride trope comes into play, because she escapes from her home, dressed in her wedding gown, on the morning of the wedding. The H rescues her and offers her a safe haven. And, like a true gallant protector, he ensures that Percy's arrested and charged and he also assists her father by investing in the family pub.

She agrees to model for his painting and to also act as his fake fiancée, at his twin brother's wedding.

Some additional drama ( related to the H's dead stalker sister in law ) is thrown in, at this juncture and somehow the romance itself got a little lost in the midst of it all.

This could've been at least a 4 star reading experience, for me, if I'd felt that there was an intense emotional connection between the MC's. Somehow, that critical aspect of the story got bogged down by all the other drama. However, there's a lovely epilogue where the MC's are expecting twin daughters and are already proud parents of a 2 year old son.

The villain, Percy, got his comeuppance and was neither seen nor heard from, again.

Safety: No OW and the heroine had never been intimate with her vomit inducing fiancé, Percy. Plus, both MC's are celibate during their short 2 week separation.

In a word: boring.

Hero is an artist/billionaire who hangs around a backwater English village with no one knowing who he is. Heroine is a self-sacrificing virgin who is willing to marry an older bully of a man to save her father’s pub.

When bully assaults her the day before their wedding, she starts to have second thoughts.

Sigh

Heroine reporting her assault to the police and stridently pushing back on the hero who was trying to help her, was not that interesting or romantic. Not LG’s best.

This may be a ‘me’ problem. Potential readers should know that other, kinder reviewers include more details for a more informed decision.

LG delivered on this romance for me.
I would have liked a more "alpha" hero as this one was a really nice guy,but we can't have everything ,can we?
The heroine was a fiesty one and I enjoyed her dealings with the hero.

A very average tepid-ish HP.
If not for her name up there (and a 6'4" golden eyed H) I'd never have pegged it as LG's work.

First, the temperamental h was overly snitty with the H who was only trying to help her. In fact was the only person who could have helped her - rescue her from the mess she and her father created for themselves. So, instead of a polite thanks, he only gets a few tongue lashings for his pains.
And later, the H behaves stupidly to prolong a non-story.

The H's brother and half-sister, and their stories in the bg, seem more intriguing.

Cute story 😍

Ruy was a good guy and Suzy was very sweet. He was fascinated with her from the start and it was very evident. I wanted them to have their happy ending. Plus I liked her biker boots just as much as Ruy did 🤪

What I loved the most about this book is Suzy's dad, which is why this book gets +1 star. We need more such good father-daughter relationship in HP. Usually its always about messed up parents and it has started to bore me.

This was actually a very good HP for once. The heroine was spunky and the hero was so protective of her. He saved her from a marriage of convenience and he asks her to play the part of his fake fiance at his twin brothers wedding and he also wants to paint her. She is a sassy little thing and I loved them so much. There is one part I didn't like where the heroine doesn't act like the character she had been during the entire book and it made me a little mad at her. But the ending was beautiful and the epilogue was four years down the road and was very cute. No drama for the sake of drama here, no cheating and seriously a refreshing change for romance.

Review from 2/20/22:

Low-angst, billionaire romance

Other than the beginning, where the 21-year-old heroine, Suzy, is determined to sell herself in marriage to a horrible, middle-aged man, to whom her father owes £50,000, in order to stop him from foreclosing on her father's pub, this novel is low angst. Both of the romantic protagonists are very likeable, and the plot is quite enjoyable.

In an unusual touch, though the 30-year-old hero, Ruy, is a billionaire investor who comes from old money in the Italian aristocracy, he is also a brilliant, successful portrait painter.

Best news of all--no accidental pregnancy! Yay! That's very, very rare in LG world.

Reread 8/18/25:

2.5 stars

I didn't like this book nearly as much during my second read. I got really tired of Suzy's constantly picking fights with Ruy as the entire source of romantic conflict. Basically, she cannot forgive Ruy for his billionaire status. Not because she is convinced that there is no ethical way for anyone to become and remain a billionaire in today's world. She despises him because she is self-righteously convinced that she absolutely would not have had sex with him if she'd known that he was rich before she blithely surrendered her virginity to him.

With every year that passes, as a jaded romance reader, I find I have less and less patience with the trope in billionaire romances that the FMC must unequivocally prove to the Croesus-rich MMC that money means absolutely nothing to her in order to "deserve" to be rewarded with marriage into a lifestyle of endless, hedonistic, conspicuous consumption. The inevitable, though unintentional, irony of this trope is this: if a woman truly enjoys a simple, non-materialistic lifestyle, existing as a billionaire's trophy wife would be anything but an HEA for her.

In addition, I'm really really tired of promiscuous MMCs. I am surprised that LG has written an MMC like that in this novel, because she has very rarely done that. Her billionaire MMCs typically have a mistress that they are faithful to until they move on to the next mistress. In contrast, Ruy has spent at least 15 years without a single committed relationship. His sexual history has consisted of countless, sleazy one-night stands. (He doesn't think they are sleazy, because, in his own estimation, he treats each temporary bed partner like a queen for a day, before callously dumping her.) But all that changes when, per the obnoxiously unrealistic "magical vagina" trope, he has sex with Suzy. Ruy is portrayed as instantly transforming into a man capable of contentedly committing to a monogamous marriage.

DNF at 39%.

I kept reading even tho the heroine is naive and a bit dumb. I kept reading when she was a brat. But they're about to have sex after hardly knowing each other when shes in a very vulnerable place... and it makes me so uncomfortable.

She's just gotten out of an abusive and manipulative relationship. And she's shared her concerns with the hero that she doesn't want him to "buy" her. And yet, he just "invested" in her father's bar.

And now, without any discussion, he's seducing her? It feels very borderline. She was hit yesterday and had hypothermia. No discussion about what she wants physically? She has to have a whole conversation in her brain where she asks if she's comfortable with having sex with him. If they can't talk about it out loud, they shouldn't be having sex.

Also, the heroine was about to marry a man who was saying he would forgive a £50k loan he had of her father's. She would have married an abusive asshole instead of letting her dad go bankrupt for £50k!!!??? That's so dumb. Also, she had no guarantee this slimebag would actually follow through. And she's keeping it a secret from her dad. She was not the sharpest tool in the heroine toolbox.

Who Wrote This Mess? Cause it wasn't Lynne Graham.

What a utter waste of everything.

Just sad ... What The Frack Has Happened To Harlequin/Mills & Boon?

It was ok, he is a billionaire tycoon and a talented painter in his spare time, she’s a feisty redhead wearing combat boots. She’s marrying a bully to save her father’s pub but when the bully becomes dangerous and beats her she decides she can’t marry him and runs away. She ends in the hero’s property and he saves her from freezing. Passion flares and he asks her to be his model and to go with him to his brother’s marriage in Spain. They have a hot week in Spain and he’s clearly besotted. So she is. Then she hears an evil woman saying bad things about him and of course she believes her. Immediately. She and the hero part their ways and eventually he comes back to her and explains what really happened. Hea. The end. Not much angst here, some typical elements from LG such as a cold, commitment phobic hero, and a feisty and sometimes too argumentative heroine, here in the version with red hair and curvy body. The fact that she believes without any hint of doubt the words of a stranger woman who obviously doesn’t like her or the hero was really annoying, since the hero was really a nice person, who helped her whenever she needed and did not do anything to let her think he was a bad person. And he was the one to come back in the end. Whatever. The book was really short, it seems to me that those new hp books are shorter and shorter... ps: and where’s the dog????

DNFed somewhere around the middle

I love me a good harlequin every now and then but that was a snoozefest for me.
I didn't feel the chemistry and it all happened too fast and they were sucking on each other's tonsils the next day after meeting.
Plus, Suzie was way too daft and annoying for my liking.

It wasn't the worst hence the 2 stars but it wasn't for me.

Usually I like this author, but not this time. I just didn’t like the heroine - at all. I came close to actively disliking her. And the hero was wooden with little spark. The The romance was cloying, sex scenes were boring and formulaic, and I just didn’t care by the time I finished. I disliked this one so much I threw it out.

I loved it !

I gave this book 5 stars. The characters were so right for each other. He taught her to trust and she taught him that it was alright to have fun. I did think her x deserved jail time instead of what he received, but still it was a good read. I love Lynn Graham's books.

CALIFICATION: 3.5 ESTRELLAS

This is a fun, entertaining read. I loved Rue and Suzy. They sparked from the start and I loved that she wasn’t a pushover. I enjoyed their romance and on page scenes. I especially loved that we got an epilogue and that it shows the couple in their HEA. This author never disappoints.

I really enjoyed the adventure of The Ring the Spaniard Gave Her.

Lynne Graham has created a wonderfully feisty and enjoyable heroine with Suzy. I particularly loved the part Suzy ran away and Ruy found her up a tree. Ruy is a good guy, even though he comes across as arrogant and moody. He essentially rescues Suzy from a terrible marriage of convenience/blackmail. I really enjoyed Lynne’s vibe of small town, country pub, daughter trying to rescue her dad scenario. Ruy’s inner artist drives him to want to paint Suzy and it’s an interesting spin on the standard Presents Hero.

A good epilogue rounds out a pretty much angst free story. I feel this fake-fiancee story has more of a Harlequin Romance vibe and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a light hearted read with some adventure and laughs on the path to true love. It doesn’t have the super dark and super angsty over the top emotion that drives the older Lynne Graham stories, but I really enjoyed it anyway.

Sorry but it seems I either love this author’s books or I don’t - no in betweens.

A really ridiculous heroine who is prepared to marry a sixty year old lech because her Dad had got himself into a mess? Absolutely no! Nothing at all believable in that story. And then - she berates the guy who rescues her! Now there is always suspension of disbelief in a Mills and Boon but this required a degree of self delusion of which I am simply not capable!

A very good book

The h and H met at his nieces school function. She was engaged to an abusive man who blackmailed her into marriage. The H didn’t do relationships because of a past stalking incident. He wanted to paint her, unbeknownst to the world he was a brilliant and famous artist. Both were scared having a relationship but they were able to find their way to each other. Great epilogue.

Avarage modern/presents story. It needed something different to make it more exciting.
Though I did like the heroines ability to see the situation as it was and not have her head in the clouds.

I listened to an audio version while following with a copy of the book at the same time 🎧 📖
