And so, we settle into the warm bath of 90’s nostalgia, where I remind you once more that if you have no affinity for Magic: The Gathering or this era, you will likely not enjoy this as much as I do.

The base of the story is no great shakes and Emi really is, as I have said, more like a Magic pixie dream girl. Then again, by saying so, I am giving her the same unfortunate dismissal that many females experience trying to enter a predominantly male hobby space. Then again, she’s fictional.

It’s complicated. I recognize that Emi has a bit more going on, what with her home life and dread of the coming millennium (though that does seem to have vanished as a plot point). And, even with the usual push and pull of this sort of romance, I think she and Hajime share some good moments together.

Either way, the balance here between relationship stuff, nostalgia bombs, and card play is pretty good. We start with Hajime off his game, literally, as his drubbing at the tournament from the last arc has crushed his confidence.

Good thing Valentine’s Day is at hand, which leads to Emi making the most apropos chocolate and not explicitly stating it’s romantically tinged, yet also being clear (within Hajime’s earshot) that she isn’t giving any out to anybody else.

Their relationship goes in all sorts of ways. I don’t necessarily love that Emi is the series’ primary source of fan service, but she does sometimes remind me of girls her age when I was a teenager. Hajime coming to her rescue during a club outing was a nice touch; that seen is pure cringe, but shows how far Hajime will go for her.

And I still love the way the cards show up at relevant story moments as a bit of visual description, not just in the actual games. It’s a cute detail that doesn’t distract but adds a little extra. Mind you, they really sing when the action starts flying.

All the duels this volume are solid and the nice part of this being based on reality and set in the past is that we know (or the mangaka does) what the meta play of Magic was like at the time and what strategies were in use.

Thus, when Hajime is super clever and pulls off an upset, it’s because he’s actually learned how to play better and does so using actual strategies of the setting. I think that’s definitely a point which causes me to be far more invested in the competition.

But my saying that also downplays the flair of the matches, in my opinion. I watched a chunk of Afterschool Dice Club, which featured a number of games I either own or have played, and it was never as good as this. So, this definitely knows what it’s up to.

As much as the love triangle here feels like a non-starter, I am mostly okay with how they’re handling Yakumo’s role. She’s clearly about to catch the eye of that smug guy who cleaned up last tournament, which is a bit of a ‘runner-up prize’, but I can take that.

More importantly, she does appear to be ready to clean his clock during their tournament match. Having this focused on a game and a romance means that Yakumo can pull off an impossible win while losing what she’s really after. I feel that’s a good compromise.

I enjoy this a lot and I think it has merit outside just the target audience, albeit a little less in that instance. The card play is so well presented and, predictability aside, the romance pretty satisfying. I don’t think the latter could survive without the former, but together they work.

4 stars - solid and uses its premise to good effect. If this just keeps on doing what it’s doing for the rest of its chapters I genuinely won’t have much to complain about.

3.5 ⭐️ I love these silly children so much. Emi and Kano's romantic tension escalates in this volume when he protects her. how does he not realize that she won't reject him after she gave him a custom made black mana chocolate for valentines day? he is a dingle berry that's how.

Yakumo, my angel, I hope you end this series happy. she is so freaking cute being a tournament baddie on the making. I love how many girls are good at playing magic in this series and no one bats an eye. lovely!!

my only grievance with this issue is that my babies get invited to a club where emi wears a skimpy outfit. "it's OK for us to be here as long as we don't drink!" my love you are 14 surrounded by adults. wtf are the adults thinking? kano is getting crush advice from a hottie with a martini why!? please have my children be children a little longer, I beg 😫💓

Weiterhin total on fire! 🔥
