I have loved everything that Juno Rushdan has written, but "Innocent Hostage" lands a tad high on the angst scale for my taste. I fully understand why, but that doesn't make reading it any easier or enjoyable. This story of a marriage in tatters is the backdrop of the kidnapping of the couple's son and it is just very tough reading. But, one thing that Juno Rushdan excels in is the action scenes and they are the single redeeming quality this book has.
Deputy US Marshal Allison Chen-Boyd and FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader Henry Boyd are married, separated and heading for a divorce. They have a seven year old who the both adore and will do anything to protect. And they have to do some very uncomfortable things to save Ben, who has been kidnapped by a dangerous cartel. They have to work together and trust each other in order to figure out how to rescue Ben and in the process, they discover how much they still love each other.

Good book that sucked me in from the beginning and kept me hooked to the last page. As part of the joint task force working to stop a drug cartel, both Allison and Henry appeared in earlier books in the series. Even then, the tension between them is evident, and here we have their story. As this book opens, Allie and Henry have been separated for six months and are in the middle of a contentious divorce. When their eight-year-old son is kidnapped, they must put aside their differences and work together to get him back.
Allison is a deputy US Marshal who played a big part in separating the cartel leader from his daughter, and he vowed revenge. He demands the impossible, and Allie and Henry must find a way to save Ben. The suspense and action took place over just a few days, keeping the intensity high throughout. Not only did we get the good guys' point of view, but the villains also received enough page time to maintain the tension as the reader sees their plans. As Allie and Henry run into obstacles thrown up by their own side (especially Allie's - I really do not like her boss!), they realize their best bet is to depend on each other. Some of the chances they took risked everything but paid off in the end. Henry's coworkers seemed much more reasonable and provided critical help in finding Ben. Their methods fascinated me, and I loved seeing the process. The final confrontation with the kidnappers was a nail-biter, with an unexpected twist in the resolution. I liked the lead-in to the next book.
I enjoyed seeing Allie and Henry find their way past the issues that drove them apart. Miscommunications, misunderstandings, and misconceptions created conflict that they could have resolved if they'd swallowed their pride and talked to each other. Henry's inability to express his emotions about a tragic event in their past led to Allie thinking he didn't care. Add in a coworker of Henry's that ran up against Allie's insecurities, and you have a recipe for misery. Henry doesn't want a divorce. He loves his wife and son and will do whatever is necessary to make them happy. Allie still loves Henry, but her trust took a hit. As they put aside their differences to save Ben, they also began to talk about what went wrong. I liked that both of them admitted fault rather than one taking all of the blame. As they let go of their past hurts, the love they shared had a chance to resurface. Some great scenes showed them at their professional best, made possible by their rekindled trust. The ending was terrific as they found a compromise that worked for both of them.
The secondary characters were well done also. The cartel leader continues to show his ruthless side and makes it easy to root for his downfall. The kidnappers were more than cookie-cutter villains and had well-developed characters. I especially ached for Lourdes, torn between her love for her brother and her horror of his actions. I liked how she cared for Ben. She earned major points for her actions at the end. Her brother, Javier, was a scary guy from the get-go, with only his love for his sister giving him any humanity. I still don't like Allie's boss, who I find obnoxiously self-centered, more concerned with his advancement than being an effective leader. I liked Henry's boss and coworkers and seeing them go all-out to help one of their own. My favorite was Ben. He was a quick thinker for a kid and showed it early on. Thanks to his memory and observation skills, he also played a big part in the lead-in to the next book.

2.5 stars I normally enjoy Ms. Rushdan's writing and I'd been enjoying this series in particular. However, this installment just did NOT do it for me. I'm usually a sucker for a marriage in trouble story, and I wanted to see how Allison and Henry would manage to get it back together. However, it turns out that these folks just needed to learn how to communicate rather than running headlong into a separation based on faulty assumptions.
The book starts off quite well. While Allison has appeared in previous books in this series, Ms. Rushdan opens here by setting the stage for her separation with Henry, her routines with their young son and the stress of her job at the US Marshals. In the early chapters, the Boyds' son Ben is kidnapped by a hitman from a drug cartel.
The search for Ben provides both the suspense plot and the catalyst to bring Allison and Henry back together. The two had found themselves at odds after a combination of a devastating miscarriage, fears of Henry kindling a relationship with a co-worker and the competing strains of careers in the Marshals and FBI.
Initially, the story is high action and I could find myself rooting for the parents trying to come together to find their son. However, I frequently found myself frustrated by Allison and Henry. For starters, these two seemed to make assumptions about each other that could have been cleared up simply by talking to each other.
That frustration with Allison and Henry as a couple spilled over into the investigation. On the one hand, I could see the roller coaster of emotions these two went through as parents, but they also spent a lot of time behaving as anything other than highly trained federal agents. The ways that they got into the middle of the investigation and went behind the backs of the agents on the case were things that in real life could have gotten them fired or at least severely disciplined.
The earlier books in Hard Core Justice were fast-paced, entertaining reads, but this one frustrated me more than entertaining me. I'll still read book 5 because I've enjoyed this author's work overall. However, this installment seems to be the weak link in an otherwise good series.

Another great book in the Hard Core Justice series. This one has married couple Allison and Henry on the verge of divorce. Their son is kidnapped and they have to work together to get him back. Not a lot of action, but just as compelling and edge of the seat suspense. The emotions between Allison and Henry and what they went through was really heartbreaking. I think this is my favorite of the series so far. I was really invested in this couple. What a great read. Loved it! Can't wait for the next one in the series.

While Allison Chen and her soon-to-be-ex, Henry Boyd are dealing with their delicate and exhausting divorce matter; then comes the more devastating and heart-wrenching news that their son, Ben, has been kidnapped by none other than the notorious cartel!
The clock is ticking and the lives of the innocence are at stake, they decided to work together to save their son despite of their crumbling marriage.
The remarkable Juno Rushdan delivers another well-plotted hard-core thriller, INNOCENT HOSTAGE, brimful of suspense and actions that would definitely satiate fans of such genre!
I would like to thank Juno for giving me the opportunity to enjoy this sensational novel!

LOVED this! Tugged on my heartstrings and kept me turning the pages into the wee hours to finish it. This was another great mix of romance, action and edge-of-your-seat suspense. Rushdan did it again. This is by far one of my favorite Intrigue series!! I can't wait for the next book.

Innocent Hostage was an action-packed, thrilling read featuring a marriage in trouble romance.
Deputy US Marshal Allison Chen-Boyd and FBI hostage negotiator Henry Boyd have known their marriage was over for a while. But when Allison and Henry meet to finalize their divorce, they receive a call that their eight-year-old son Ben has been kidnapped. Up against a dangerous cartel whose leader wants vengeance, Allison and Henry will have to work together if they want to get their son back alive. With danger at every turn, saving their family will mean learning to trust each other again before it's too late.
The plot in Innocent Hostage is incredibly fast-paced with the story taking place over the course of a few days. The book opens with Ben's kidnapping and quickly spirals from there. With the nature of Allison and Henry's jobs, there's no shortage of law enforcement to help with the Marshals, the FBI, and the local police becoming involved in the search for Ben. Initially the search stalls as the kidnappers have covered their tracks too well but eventually the group gets a few leads. I liked the direction the search went and that it wasn't completely straightforward due to the cartel being involved. The ending where the FBI goes to rescue Ben was incredibly well done with the perfect amount of tension to keep you guessing on how everything would turn out.
Marriage in trouble romance is a trope that has always been hit or miss for me but I was still looking forward to Allison and Henry's story after meeting their characters previously in the series. Their relationship has had issues for some time and the two have been separated for six months prior to Innocent Hostage. Due to Henry's tendency to shut down his emotions and a breakdown in their communication, Allison feels there isn't anything left to save in their marriage. It's clear the two still care for each other but their issues have made them lose sight of that. Ben's kidnapping really brings them together as they're forced to spend a lot of time together while they work to get Ben back. In the downtime while they're waiting for updates, the two finally have the time to talk which lets them work out the majority of their issues. I was happy with how they resolved everything and I liked where their relationship was by the end of the book.
Overall Innocent Hostage was a fantastic read and I'm looking forward to picking up the final book in the series, Unsuspecting Target, soon.

Another great book in the Hard Core Justice Thriller series, when Allison and Henry's son is taken hostage by the leader of a drug cartel we follow along to see what they will do in the attempt to get him back. Can the two overcome past issues to work together. I loved this book, and most certainly would recommend it to others. I received an ARC from the publisher and all opinions expressed here are my own.

Action-packed and emotional! I couldn't wait for this one after reading book #3 and Juno Rushdan didn't disappoint. I was hooked from the first chapter until the last. This is an awesome series. Highly recommend for fans of romantic suspense/thrillers.

Another scintillating installment in A Hard Core Justice Thriller series.
Allison is a Deputy US Marshal, Henry is an FBI hostage negotiator, their marriage is on the rocks and their eight year old son has been kidnapped. They know to get their son, Ben back they'll have to show a united front and work together. Allison had a hand in separating a cartel boss from his daughter and now he's out for revenge. He's made demands and the clock is ticking. Will Allison and Henry be able to do what the mob boss wants? How many people will die if they fail to do what he demands? Could Ben be next?
This is a high octane, fast paced, action packed thriller that held me captive from start to finish. The tension is palpable with the suspense ratcheting up with each demand. I'm a fan of the author's writing style and find it to be succinct and accessable. Even though the action starts from the start the characters are plainly drawn and easy to connect with with just the right amount of romance thrown in to keep things interesting.
Although this is part of a series it definitely does well as a stand-alone. If your looking for a fun, fast paced thriller in which to get lost then I highly recommend you add this to your TBR pile when it's released later this month.

Thank you to the author for the early copy to read, review and enjoy. I look forward to the next installment!

Number 4 in this series and definitely another page turner. The story continues in a way from the last book with revenge and the drug cartel trying to keep control. This time an innocent boy and his nanny are just a few of the victims in a bid for control. A broken family unit learns that communication and true love will help mend broken ties. As usual Juno Rushdan has seemed to research how a HRT unit works from the FBI and describes it as the story unfolds. Is there a happily ever after in this story, or does a divided family drift farther apart ? That's for you the reader to find out. I do know that I really hope, that this is not an end to this series as there are so many other characters who need to have their story told. So hang on and enjoy reading and becoming immersed in this story.

HIGHLY CHARGED INTENSITY
Misunderstandings and misconceptions cloud past situations while making the present difficult to navigate. However, Allie and Henry, even though separated for the last 6 months, realize that working together to find their kidnapped son highlights why they still do trust and depend on each other.
Innocent Hostage is an edge of your seat, can’t put it down story that shouldn’t be missed. It is a great addition to the Hard Core Justice series. Definitely recommend.

Excellent romantic suspense story! Some RS doesn't have much suspense, but this one ratchets it up when the couple's young son is kidnapped and keeps the pressure on through the entire book. I also liked that neither MC was always right about their relationship or what to do to help their son, it took give-and-take to get him back. I was expecting them to have more of a hands-on role through the book, but the author kept them hopping in other ways. Very nice.
NB - This is #4 in a series by the author. I've read the first book, but not the others in the series. It works fine as a stand-alone as long as the reader doesn't mind not knowing who everyone mentioned is or that there are a few loose ends. I was sorry to find that this isn't the final book in the series. I want to know who is. lol

Allison Chen-Boyd is a tough Deputy US Marshal and Henry Boyd is her FBI hostage negotiator husband. They are in the midst of a painful divorce when life is suddenly made much worse. The leader of a cartel is intent on inflicting vengeance upon the United States Marshals Service and has made the Boyd’s eight-year-old son a pawn. The kidnapping unites husband and wife in a way that nothing else could. As they try to save their son, they lean on each other and find that they have even more worth fighting for.
The action and menace began early and continued to keep me on my toes. It was exciting to see what actions were taken by the good guys and the bad. Tension was high with the danger to a child but the unexpected twists kept me turning the pages. Admittedly, I find myself fascinated with this author’s villains in a way that I find rare. She takes much care to bring them to life.
As for the main characters, it seemed that Henry was just being introduced into the story when I fell in love with his steady manner and clear devotion for the woman he had married. It was also easy to see how Allison’s prickly exterior got her into scrapes but hid a well of anguish. I felt invested in watching them heal their relationship and in their attempt to get their son back.
This is the fourth instalment in the Hard Core Justice series. It can certainly be read as a stand-alone story. However, knowing the characters and situations from the previous books just adds to the fun.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Fast-paced with non-stop action, this book was absolutely riveting. Ally is a U.S. Marshal and her husband Henry is an FBI agent who is trained in rescue IG hostages. They have to combine forces, in spite of their shaky marriage, in order to save their young son Ben from the ruthless hands of a criminal cartel that kidnapped him. The pacing is perfect, moving seamlessly from where Ben is being held back to Ally’s home where agents are trying to monitor developments and to the home of the head of the cartel, Emilio Vargas. Vargas is determined to wreak vengeance on Ally for her involvement in trying to take down his cartel and taking Ben seems to be the perfect way. I did not see a way clear for Henry and Ally to work together since their marriage is so broken, but as they join forces for the good of Ben, their own relationship begins to be healed. Of course, I knew what the outcome would eventually be, but getting there was extremely intense and thoroughly entertaining. With a tightly woven plot and characters that would make great heroes on the big screen, this book was an intriguing read that I highly recommend. Although it is part of a series, this is the first book in the series that I have read, so it can definitely be read as a standalone.

There is a lot of suspense as Allison Chen-Boyd and Henry Boyd have to navigate the kidnapping of their son. As a deputy US marshal, Allison was involved in slowing down the money-laundering activities of the Los Chacales cartel by getting people close to Emilio Vargas to turn against him. Now, he wants his daughter back and has Allison's son kidnapped.
And as if that isn't enough to deal with, Ally and Henry are also in the process of getting a divorce - one that Henry has never wanted. How horrible that it took such a tragic event to get the couple to actually start talking to each other. Personally, I found Ally's character pretty cold. And while Henry obviously was still in love with his wife, they both had difficulty communicating with the other. It seemed to me that the behavior of Ally's boss toward the end was over the top and a reason for his behavior was never given. Perhaps that is part of a future storyline.

MAYBE the book should be a 30 min episode packed with lots of action complete with kidnapping, Don and mafia, Assassins, other woman drama. MAYBE. But it didn't truly develop the characters or let you connect emotionally with anyone. The book would have been better with less action sequences and more conversations and not just that one or two minutes of flashbacks and love you's but true ones where you see the H and h learn to compromise and make choices together.

Any book involving a child’s kidnapping is hard to read and this one is not any different but the payoff in the end is worth it! Seeing Henry and Allison come together to save this son and resolve the misunderstandings that had tore them apart warms you in this suspense filled second chance story.

I love the drama and suspense of this author's books. She's a master and keeping the reader totally engrossed to find out what happens. And there's always a twist that you just don't see coming!

Juno Rushdan is just really great at second chance and marriage in trouble romances. Two of my most meh tropes are elevated significantly with her storytelling.

This was great book that drew me in right away. This was a hard book to put down when I had to go to work. Allie, and Henry are in the middle of a divorce. Allison is a US Marshal, and Henry works for the FBI. They have a 7-year-old son named Ben who was kidnapped by a Cartel leader who wants revenge. The cartel leader was separated from his own daughter and wants Allison to know the pain she has caused him. Allison and Henry come together to work to save Ben. I loved how the two was able to talk through their differences and give their marriage a second chance. I also loved how Ben told the bad guy that his dad was a superhero at the end of the book. Ben was one brave little boy. Great book!
