When Royce Chandler first claps eyes on his father's ranch foreman, Parker Jones, it's lust mixed with dislike at first sight. It seems that Parker has nothing but disdain for the young law graduate. But all that changes when Parker is thrown from his horse and Royce accompanies him to the hospital. What follows is a realization of their mutual attraction, and a desire to spend the rest of their lives together; maybe get a ranch of their own.

Then Royce's dad tells Parker that his son is about to turn down a juicy offer from a big law firm in Los Angeles. Parker knows the reason--him--and he takes strong action to convince Royce he's making a mistake by not taking the job. But his actions tear the two men apart, leaving Royce to wonder, how could Parker's love for him have faded so suddenly?

J.P. Bowie

J.P. Bowie was born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland. He wrote his first (unpublished) novel – a science fiction tale of brawny men and brawnier women that made him a little suspect in the eyes of his family for a while.

Leaving home at age eighteen for the bright lights of London, he found himself in the midst of a “diverse and creative crowd” that eventually led him to the performing arts. For the next twelve years he sang, danced and acted his way around the theatres of London and the provinces, appearing in shows with many famous British singers, actors and comedians.

After immigrating to the US and living for many years in Las Vegas where he worked for that incomparable duo, Siegfried and Roy, J.P. found himself entranced by the fair city of San Diego where he currently lives with his partner, Phil.

J.P. loves to hear from his readers and can be contacted at jpbowie@cox.net

SAME AUTHOR, SAME REVIEWS... APPARENTLY!

I seem to reiterate in this review everything I thought of this author's other books. Good? Yes. Amazing? No. It seems that the writings of this author are retained by an "invisible boundary" that prevents them from crossing the line to reach the "wow" stage. I said it with Warrior Prince, another book/sequel of this author, and I will say it again. I liked this story a lot, but it lacked that touch that could have made a difference. It lacked spices, it's flavorless. All the ingredients are present for a big achievement but the result is bland.

The narration is enjoyable, the story-line -- I dare to say -- banal and "traditional" in cowboy reads; still that machismo and that homosexuality at the throat of each other, still the questionings "Would my relatives accept me?" "Would the other handymen still respect me if they find out?" “Can a macho guy be gay?”... I think I've found this intrigue in every single gay cowboy fiction I read.... and it gets old, and tiring.

The characters, Royce and Parker's personalities, lack some strong attributes that would make each one of them stand out and sound unique, in place they seemed very alike to me... only the names alternated whilst the psychological characteristics could have very well concerned the same character. That's disappointing. Other than that -- rather than to throw another blow at the intrigue -- I'd say that the blurb is problematic, it killed every sparkle of suspense if there could have been any. It trivialized the ending, regrettably.

This is all that I can say about this read. I didn't detest it, I like cowboy stories, but this one didn't bring anything new, that's the reason why I won't rate it more than what I rate "good but not good enough” books. 2 stars!

This story has a lot of heart, is very sweet and has not one, but two cowboys as main characters. The way they were introduced, with Parker's accident, had me right there. What followed in terms of emotional ups and downs didn't let go of me, and the drama when the idiots, excuse my language, decided to have a truly stupid fight had me yelling at both of them. More so Parker than Royce, but still. Neither of them was very clever about it.

It's always a good sign, I think, when I get so involved in characters' lives that I start seeing them as real people. Parker was definitely that to me. Too much in love to see straight? Yep. In dire need of someone to give him a good talking to about his priorities? Definitely. Flawed? Totally! In short: the perfect guy to root for. He certainly needed someone on his side other than himself - he was his own worst enemy!

Royce is slightly more rational than Parker, but just as much in love. He has the additional complication of being a lawyer as well as a rancher's son, so the point when he might be tempted to take a different job was sort of predictable. But - that was not even his biggest problem. Having to watch him go through the effects of Parker's idiotic plan was heart wrenching. I suffered with him and was glad he liked his job enough to help him through the separation.

If you like sweet stories that take you on a rollercoaster of emotions, contain hot cowboys who are very much in love and don't mind a bit of suffering (okay, a lot of emotional torment) before the happy ending, you will probably like this book.

I was putting with up with this book even if it had somethings that seemed unbelievable, i was trying hard to like it, really, even after the "love-at-first-fuck", but then BAM Royce forgives Parker so damn easily for the heartache of a year that you would think he's forgiving him for getting late on a date... i was like ...really? ....fucking really?!

So yeah i'm like 92% in the book and i'm not even interested in finishing, will do eventually ...someday.

finished reading, the book is not that bad if you don't take it seriously.

I know i liked another books from J.P. Bowie, but this one just didn't do for me.

Wow, that was just....bad. I did finish it which usually puts it at 3 stars but it was so short that I couldn't just quit. I think they were in love by page 4 or somewhere around there. Love at first fuck and all that. I just felt absulutely nothing for these guys. Nada. Chances are I won't remember a thing about them tomorrow morning. Quick read, lots of sex, insta-love and inta-forgiveness. Not good.

Very nice, although pretty straightforward and a little naive story.
I actually love insta-love trope, but here it was maybe a little too 'insta', but whatever - it was cute and hot, with little angst in the middle and a pretty satisfying ending. Oh and Aaron is awesome :)
Now I'm off to read the sequel!

Something about the MCs taking the time to look deep into each others eyes while waiting for an ambulance for a suspected broken back just rubbed me the wrong way. It seemed well written but it didn't grab me.

Loved this. It was just as good the second time reading it. Royce and Parker were two sweet MC's. I would have liked it to be slightly longer, but I still loved it.

I LOVED this.. The story starts out okayish but it gets better as I read along. Parker and Royce are great, they had me laughing with their bantering. Scenes in this had me glued for a fast love story but not without a few dramas too.
A quick fast paced read for Parker and Royce story. The ending is a gorgeous HFN with their future in planing for HEA.
When Parker get thrown from a horse gets hurt Royce tries to comfort. Royce was gorgeous which why he's attracted to him.

Just today I was saying with a friend that I’d love to read here and there a western romance. A contemporary one. It’s a genre that reminds me of when I was young, and the Long Tall Texans were the dream lovers of many of use. Living in a ranch always seemed like a perfect life, and most of the time they didn’t have any trouble, if not the “natural” one, like falling from a horse and being injured. In Ride ‘Em Cowboy there is also an “old fashioned” feeling, despite being it a full contemporary tale: the foreman of the ranch falls in love for the young son of his boss… well, in the past it was the young daughter, but the story doesn’t change much.

Royce is just back home from College and already he doesn’t like Parker, the young foreman of his father. But this is like the story of the fox and the grapes, he dislikes what he can’t have. Royce is not out with his father… or so he believes him, since, from what I understood, it’s not that Royce is hiding so well being gay, first and most important hint of all, loving and knowing by heart the songs of different Broadway musicals. And when he has the chance to be alone with Parker, and he finds out that also the handsome foreman is gay, well, nothing reins him, neither the fear to be discovered by his father.

It’s almost funny to read how Royce is all over Parker, so funny that, if the other man’s interest wasn’t mutual, there would be space for a sexual harassment case: when Parker is injured on his back from an horse fall, and Royce goes to take him home, he detours for a roadside motel, and practically ravages the man that is barely able to walk! If you are wondering, yes, Parker was willing, and he even encouraged Royce, but I don’t think that, even if he wanted, he would be able to refuse Royce. Royce is not selfish, he is really a good guy, but I have the feeling that no one has really say no to him, or at least not for something he really wanted.

Someone could question that Royce and Parker are rushing too much things, words of love are really easy on their lips, but after all, they are young. They really believe that love is the most important things, and the life has not yet taught him to be shy with their feelings. Despite being romantic almost at an unbelievable point, but a good romance is never too much, I like that, in the end, reality has its role in the story, and even if we have a good happily ever after, it’s a more realistic one. Royce and Parker are good together, and they have good chances of a bright future, but after all they don’t know each other so much, and it’s better to be careful than being badly hurt.

A Splendid Series of Conveniences

This review covers all four of the books in this series.

In typical J.O. Bowie fashion, each of the two MCs in all these books hit the romance running from virtually the first page even though the circumstances, as well as the virtually opposite personalities, sizes, and backgrounds of each of the four couples are a bit much to imagine as separate tales.

But Bowie's strength is that he creates a community of these guys in the rural area surrounding, and including, Sacramento, so by the time you get to the last book (so far), the whole thing seems totally believable. The sex is terrific, the characters very well drawn, and the plots are all logical, and logically handled. Given the fact that these are basically novellas, that's a tough assignment to carry off, and Bowie achieves it very well.

Really not sure what to say about this one. Royce and Parker have lust at first sight so the sex part worked for them. Not so much for me. The story was a little short but everything works out for the two of them. All loose ends tied up by the end of story.
