The Varsity Dad Dilemma

Rate this book
★ A new sexy, small town sports romance from USA Today bestselling author Lex Martin! ★

What’s worse than having Rider Kingston, the star quarterback, give you the big brushoff because he doesn’t want to get serious? You’d probably think living across the street from him where you get a first-hand view of his hookups, right?

That’s what I thought. Until someone drops off a baby with a note pinned to her blanket that says one of those jocks—either Rider or one of his roommates—is the father. The problem? Baby mama doesn’t mention which of these numbskulls is the sperm donor.

I wouldn’t care about their paternity problems—not the slightest bit—except my brother lives there too. Which means that adorable squawking bundle might be my niece, and there’s no way I’m leaving her unattended with those bumbling football players.

They need my help, even if they don’t know it yet. Once we solve this dilemma and figure out who’s the daddy, I’m out.

I’ll just ignore Rider and those soul-searing looks he gives me every time I reach for the baby. He broke my heart three years ago. He won’t get a second chance.

Overall Opinion: This was just alright for me. I liked the premise because it was so different, but there was a lot that didn’t feel that believable or like it was as thought out as well as it should have been. There were many times that the h had me rolling my eyes and feeling like for someone supposedly so smart she sure was immature! However, I liked how the H stepped up to do the right thing even when stretched thin. It was almost to the point where I thought the H would’ve been better off without the h. Side Note: I was thrown off by the “varsity” because I didn’t think that applied to college but high school instead, and there was a scene where the football player wore their “varsity” jackets…is that a thing in college and I didn’t know it?! 🤔

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Gabby and Rider’s story. Gabby and Rider’s had a friendship that turned into more with a kiss freshman year of college when all of a sudden Rider pushes Gabby away. Gabby has hated Rider ever since, especially since she lives across the street from him and his football friends. When a baby is left with no identity but a note saying that she belongs to someone in the house, Gabby steps in because her brother lives there too and she doesn’t want the baby to enter the foster system like she did when she was younger. There are some ups and downs, some OW drama, some sexy times…and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Gabby and Rider’s POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, but feelings are still there from years before.

H (Hero) rating: 3.5 stars. Rider. I liked him. He stepped up when needed and while I wanted to shake him for expecting the best from everyone, I forgave him because of his relationship with the baby.

h (heroine) rating: 3 stars. Gabby. I struggled with her. She was quick to judge and assume the worst. It really bugged me how she and acted immature at times.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends in a good place for the couple but with what I would call a HFN ending

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

I haven't been into new adult romances lately, but I really enjoyed this one! Gabby and Rider were super close freshmen year of college and almost became something more, but Rider ghosted Gabby and she's avoided him ever since. Now, she lives across the street from him and a bunch of his football teammates, including her brother. One night, someone leaves a baby with a note saying that the father lives in that house. Gabby knows the guys have no idea how to handle a baby, and the baby could possibly be her niece, so she offers to help the guys out and figure out who the father is. This means Gabby needs to talk to Rider again and the two have to spend more time together. Rider is feeling pressured to perform on the football field and deal with his father, who wants nothing to do with him. The last thing Rider needs is a child he can't afford. I really loved the baby and how the guys had to learn how to take care of her. Rider was also a great character and I enjoyed him trying to figure out what to do with his life. The one thing I didn't love was Rider's excuse for ghosting Gabby in the past. I thought it was a pretty annoying reason and he never really had to grovel for what he did. But I really loved the single dad aspect of this book and it was a fun romance!

This was a fun and emotional sports romance. Add in a bit of enemies to lovers, single parent, and second chance! I truly hope we get more books from some of Rider’s friends/teammates and Gabby’s brother, Ben! I would totally read those. A great book to start the new year off with.

This was my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it! Cute and sweet sports romance!
The MCs were so great and the side characters were the cherry on top. I really liked Tank. He was just who was needed to keep everyone sane and on track.

Gabby is a girl after my own heart. She was nerdy in the best of ways and her organization skills were so great. She spoke and you instantly fell in line. So sweet and caring. Wanting what was the best for her, but also for everyone in her little circle. Sienna was just the right person to cheer her on. I loved her!
Rider was the star quarterback and caught the attention of all the ladies. Even Miss Gabby at one point. He was determined to make something of himself. To wipeout all the naysayers in one throw of the football with his cannon of an arm.

Throw in the adorable baby and I was a goner. So were all those big, buff football jocks! Serious swooning happening!
I wasn't sure if this read was going to do it for me, but I judged it without merit. It did something good for sure. I even teared up a time or two. Gahh! If you're in the mood for a sports romance filled with jocks, a quirky girl who makes the bend to her every whim, an adorable baby that steals the show, steaminess and twists you didn't see coming --- pick up this book!

“I can face three-hundred-pound linemen and not bat an eye,…

…but something about this woman makes me want to run before I do anything stupid. It’s baffling.”

It feels like it’s been a hot minute since we’ve had a brand new Lex Martin read, and The Varsity Dad Dilemma was the perfect reminder of why I enjoy her writing. It served college sports/single dad/new adult/second chance trope-y goodness. Gabby and Rider have a rocky road to navigate together, and even more things to deal with in their own personal lives, but somehow they just work together and figure things out.

Yes, there’s some angst. Some other woman drama, other man drama, and some baby on your door step drama, but these two have a painful past so there is some time between their then and their now. Anyway.

Overall I think this is a good read. It reminds me of some of the earliest new adult reads I was picking up. Yes, it’s filled with tropes and angst and some over the top plot points, but it has that classic style to it that brings it all together to be a great read!!

Single father AND a college/sports trope romance? SIGN ME UP!

Okay so first off, falling in love with Lex's writing is one of a kind. I have been missing her writing style and finally diving into this one has me on my knees of loving it even more. Especially since it is featuring my ultimately favorite trope, single father romance!

It's a plus that it includes the college/sports trope romance as well, and falling in love with Gabby and Rider was just an instant. I am looking forward to see if Lex will be making this into a series!

Oh my god. I can't get enough of Lex Martin's writing. I absolutely inhale everything she writes, and every book has been awesome. So, I knew I was going to love every word of this one. However, when I read the blurb, I was a little nervous that this was a second chance story where the hero was a complete man whore. And I was going to hate him.

Thankfully I was wrong, and I loved Rider from the start. Having the story written in dual point of view just made him shine even brighter. Because that boy had depth and maturity and drive and abs. And although he had been young and dumb and full of stupidity he hadn't been a bad guy.

Gabby was sweet and so strong. I loved that she was a bit of a nerd while still being self-confident and self-sufficient. She didn't need anyone to look after her and she was more than capable of holding her own. And when it came to beautiful baby Poppy, she was just amazing. She put aside her own feelings and drama with her brother and Rider and did everything she could to give Poppy everything she needed. Always and above her own needs.

I loved the chemistry between these two and I'm praying that this is going to be a series. Because I could stay with these secondary characters for days. The emotion was as strong as the chemistry, and I did shed a few tears while reading it. And when we got to the tattoo parlour and Brady was there, I was so excited to see the tie in with Kat and Gabby.

Gah this book was just everything I can ask for in a new adult, sports romance. And the spin on the whoops baby just made it epic. God I hope Lex is planning more books, soon.

This book hooked me from the first page. And I was surprised-because I totally passed judgement on the title and was not expecting such a good story and such good writing.

We meet the h, a senior in college, as she is interviewing for a new college roommate for a shared off campus house. The house is directly across the street from the football house, where H lives.

They had developed a close relationship (friends but with depth and a strong potential for things going further) in Freshman year but then the H ghosts her without any warning and she watches as he hooks up with other girls.

There are many layers to this story. Some quirky ones-like the h’s first room mate, some angsty ones like the h and the H and also his ex hook up (this book is safe Re cheating) and some complicated ones, like the h’s estranged brother and family. Things from the past are referenced and things later circle back to explain the reference.

Three years have past and now in senior year, the H wants to reach back out to h who is not having a bar of it and avoids and ignores him. Until one night where she discovers a baby on the football house doorstep.

Her estranged brother is also a member of the football team and lives in the football house. A note arrives with the baby and claims that one of the footballers is the father, so the h is aware that she is potentially an aunt. This (and her history of foster homes) motivates the h to help the guys look after the baby until the paternity results are in. The h and her fabulous organisational and baby skills help to provide support for the guys and for the adorable baby.

The book goes on a journey of so many facets of growth.

I adored this book!

I relearned an important lesson of not judging a book by its cover (well, title).

Friends, your ovaries aren’t ready for this alpha protective, sinfully sexy, irresistibly charming hero with the - guh - softest sweetest underbelly in history.

I am deceased, my ovaries nothing but a pile of shrapnel.

Rider Kingston was absolute friggin’ perfection and The Varsity Dad Dilemma just knocked my socks clean off.

No lie, there were scenes from this story that played out in my head like a movie. They were so vivid and alive and so deeply romantic. My heart never stood a chance. I smiled so hard and devoured this book like the decadent treat it really was. I’m telling you, this story was the full package – complete with bromance, sisterhood, an unexpectedly adorable baby, a dash of drama, a rollercoaster-ride of emotions, and the kind of sweep-you-off-your-feet swoony romance that I completely luxuriated in. It’s like Lex Martin found a direct line to my heart and proceeded to light it up in all the ways that makes it happy.

It was so freaking good!

This was the most sweetly satisfying romance. Truly, The Varsity Dad Dilemma was everything I love about college sports romance. The banter, the chemistry (shivers), the camaraderie among Rider’s teammates (and maybe most especially the camaraderie between Rider’s teammates and Gabby). It was fun but also heartfelt. It was steamy but also emotionally layered. It was smartly written and effortless to read. I fell all-in for these characters, and this big beautiful love story and enjoyed every single moment spent between these pages. ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

Lex Martin always knows to surprise me and to get me addicted to every story. The Varsity Dad Dilemma wasn’t any different. I loved it so much. It’s one of my favorite books by her. Definitely a book I’ll reread in the future. I found it difficult to put The Varsity Dad Dilemma down and I read past my bed time. I always wanted to know what happened next and when Rider and Gabby became a couple. I went in blind, because that’s how I like to experience the author’s books, so I’m going to be vague for the rest of my review.

Rider and Gabby are very captivated characters and totally had my heart at the end. Gabby is determined, hardworking, kind hearted, loyal, smart and caring. She’s such a strong women! Gabby had a lot to overcome to get where she is. It had made her closed off and she doesn’t trust easily. But when she sees someone as a friend, she’s the best friend you can have.

Rider is determined, sporty, loyal, fun and kind hearted. He’s a football player and the leader of the college football team. His goal is to get drafted and trains hard for it, but he loves playing football. I wasn’t Rider’s biggest fan at the beginning, but he won me over little by little. I loved how he changed. He wanted be better for Gabby and Poppy.

Rider and Gabby were almost a couple at the beginning of college, but Rider changed and he even dropped Gabby as a friend. Gabby disliked football players since, so she’s not too happy that she lives across them. One unexpected night brings Gabby back into Rider’s life. Rider and Gabby grow closer and closer. I understood it took time for them to be together, but I was rooting for them more and more with every chapter. I absolutely loved them together! The banter and the steam were great. The epilogue was just a beautiful and adorable ending of their love story.

I hope there will be books about Rider and Gabby’s friends. The friends added much to the story. They were funny, supportive and loyal. The way Rider’s teammates let Gabby into their lives and liked her, that was great to read because she deserves great friends. I’m also hoping for more books, so I get to read some more about Rider and Gabby.

As soon as our lips meet, all the puzzle pieces click together.
Not to sound like a dick . . . but how was this so good?! Were my expectations so low that I tricked myself?😂 Absolutely not! This was well above average and definitely worth the reading if you're into college sports romances. 😍

LOVED both the MC's: We have Rider, the quarter back on the verge of an NFL draft. He was a mostly standard H, but without the mean streak of arrogance.
She knows I'm not into commitments, and I know she's a forever kind of girl.
The author made him wonderfully vulnerable in his inner thoughts and the way his back story made his motivations make sense was lovely.

Then we have Gaby, who was a standout heroine from start to finish.
I'm in touch with my strengths, but blonde bombshell is not one of them. I'm nerd-tastic and proud. Girl-next-door with a side vibe of stern librarian.
I really loved her. She also had a well-thought-out backstory that was used to great effect.

Long story short, I should have checked out this author's work sooner. Moving on to the next book . . . I need more of the smart dialogue and sizzling chemistry.

⭐️ 5 "Surprise, Daddy" Stars ⭐️
The Varsity Dad Dilemma was soooo good! Lex Martin always achieves to blend together sweetness, humor and sexiness in the best ways! This college, sports romance was endearing and a real delight to read! Gabby and Rider were very interesting heroes with such a great chemistry!

Rider is the big guy on campus, being the star quarterback. With a difficult home life growing up, he dreams of the NFL. He doesn’t do serious relationships, because he needs to stay solely focused on football. His life is suddenly startled when an adorable baby girl is mysteriously left at his home. But who’s the father? Rider? One of his roommates? I enjoyed this twist, where it wasn’t clear at first who was the daddy of this cutie. The arrival of this little miss is just what will help Gabby and Rider reconnect and realize what they have been missing for years.

Gabby is resentful over the way Rider pushed her away years before, but she can’t resist in helping him with this new adventure as a single dad. She’s such a genuinely kind-hearted girl. I also appreciated her sass and take command sides. She was really a lovely heroine. Rider always had a soft spot for her. I truly loved the chapters in his point of view where he explained why he needed to put distance between them three years earlier. He’s such a great guy, with good values and desire to provide for little Poppy. He embraces this new situation and it’s utterly sweet.

This novel made me swoon so hard! Rider was so thoughtful and sexy. The tension with Gabby was really entertaining and evolved into the most beautiful relationship. I was so waiting for them to finally unleash their feelings for each other. Their intimate moments were explosive, but also filled with emotion. The supporting characters brought a depth to the story and created some charming and funny scenes.

Make sure you get your copy of this exquisite romance! It will make your heart melt and your knees weak for sure.

3,5⭐️ It was rather predictable and silly at times, but overall it was not an entirely bad read. Just a typical NA with a bit of drama, but not too much to kill the mood. If you need something light, something which will not change your life, but will provide you with a bit of entertainment - this may be for you.

I think the baby and the typical struggle with early parenting could have played a bigger role (and perhaps having a baby with someone else should create a conflict?), but since this book aims a bit younger audience, I can understand why it didn’t.

Just one? If the conflicts were clothing/accessories in the second half of TVDD, it might’ve been better to head out in undies only 🤪🤦🏻‍♀️.

As damning as that sounds, let’s backpedal a bit. True enough, TVDD has a rather stereotypical setup, yet the first half was still a sweet, amusing college romance read & cruising along to be a 4(maybe 4+) star read. It ticked the boxes for banter, sexy, a palpable connection between the H&h & to the reader(Although chapters 61-62, I wanted to smack Rider into next week. And as sympathetic as I am to Gabby’s past , once or twice in the second half I would’ve liked to have seen a little personal growth with Gabby & have her put on her big girl panties, not succumb to her old insecurities), & several really good side characters as well(I loved Tank, Olly — my vote for LM’s next hero since Tank & Bree are already a couple —, Sienna, Bree, & of course the little nugget, Poppy was a cutie - she cracked me up in the second epilogue in the future you get signing up for LM’s newsletter).

As to what unraveled the second half, there were just too many unnecessary angsty conflicts going off like tiny time bombs one after the other. It made the story feel unfocused & scattered. Rider felt out of character in said chapters above. Too much lack of communication & assumptions. So while I wouldn’t go so far as hate, but it definitely wasn’t love for me most of this half.

Ok, maybe I’m being dense here, but after that moment between Sienna & ? I need answers, people 🙈😂.

Loved both epilogues(again, to read the second by signing up for LM’s newsletter from the link at the end of the book…oh! & ).

This was SO CUTE. College football romance, jock + nerdy girl, single dad, second chance, neighbors, SO many great elements.

One night during a party, a baby is left outside the house of a bunch of senior football players. The note is vague and the mother is no where to be found. Rider eventually figures out the baby is his, and he’s determined to be a great dad and keep up his football career during his senior year. Gabby, his neighbor, ex-tutor, and an almost love interest from the past, steps up to help him despite their rough history.

Gabby and Rider were good friends freshman year, but when they were on the verge of something more, Rider ghosted without much explanation. Now, Gabby is happy to help with the baby, but super hesitant to let Rider back in to her life. After a lot of patience rebuilding their friendship and a dash of groveling, she decides to give it another go with Rider.

This was just so cute, I mean who doesn’t want to read about a house full of hot football players doing everything they can to give this tiny baby, Poppy, the best life possible. Gabby & Rider make a great duo, and I loved all the teammates and side characters. It was funny, relatively low drama, spicy, and just an all around good time. Can’t wait for the next book!!

This one didn't work for me, the premise sounded good but the story fell flat. A senior college quarterback hoping for to be a 1st round draft pick finds out he's a dad to a six month old after the baby is dropped on his doorstep where he lives with several other players. There's some drama to figure out who the dad is and then more drama when the girl he ditched freshman year ends up basically taking over and making sure the baby doesn't go into foster care like she did. I liked the characters enough, what I didn't like was that Rider (the baby's dad) was supposedly broke but he had money to pay the umpteen babysitters who watched Poppy (his daughter) when he was in class, out celebrating, out screwing the neighbor who he ditched freshman year, when he was at practice, and at away games. The author tried to make him out as some great dad stepping up to the plate but honestly I'm surprised the kid even recognized him for how little time he spent with her (when she's sleeping does not count). Anyway, more drama ensues when the college finds out he has a kid and photos come to light of the parties in the house he lives in, his daughter's great grandmother shows up, blah, blah, blah. While I wouldn't have wanted him to lose the career he was obviously meant to have, I just feel like this could have been executed better. Oh and his "I've always used a condom" fell flat when they remember the weekend Poppy was probably conceived and he was wasted...fine upstanding man there but then he'll fit right in with the NFL players.

Wow, this story packs on emotional punch to your heart! Rider and Gabby have quite the past and it doesn't help they live across from each other. Gabby stays away from everything football until one night changes everything. Rider, captain quarterback of the football team has a goal to make it to the pros nothing will deter him from his path. However, when a baby lands on the door step of the football house, everything changes. Gabby is faced with having to be around Rider and her brother and the guys have to figure out who the father is. This story takes us on an intense emotional rollercoaster with twists and turns that you won't see coming. Rider and Gabby have a second chance, but will their pasts hold them back or let them move on and see what happens? This was a fantastic read and a story that will steal your heart away!

FOUR AND HALF STARS

I love college sports romance and this one didn't disappoint. At a football after-game party, a 6-month baby was left with a note. All that the guys could decipher from the note was that one of them was the dad and the mom had tried raising her but couldn't do it anymore. Now, this is a concept I haven't seen in this sub-genre.

I enjoyed watching the guys trying to manage the baby and figure out who the actual dad is. Towards the end Rider made Gabby wonder where she stood with him. Which made for some unnecessary drama. Luckily, it was quickly resolved.

● college sports romance
● second chance romance
● single dad
● dual pov
● standalone

This was my first book by Lex Martin and I look forward to checking out more books by her.

Ovary-explosion overload!! Rider Kingston and all the guys who live at the house called "Stallion Station" made me swoon.

I loved the chemistry between Rider and Gabby right from the beginning. These two have a love-hate history dating back to freshman year and this book begins at the beginning of senior year so the tension is strong and it's completely delicious.

We get a pretty good look at both of their backgrounds and what makes them tick before the adorable baby, Poppy, is introduced and this little cutie only enhances what is already a fun and engaging story.

Gabby is a force of nature and I love her organizational skills. While she constantly feels alone, she knows she does it to herself given how she grew up, however she doesn't sit around and feel sorry for herself. Her spirit and fight is something to admire and I think it's also what drives Rider to her side over and over again.

Rider is also a powerhouse of drive, he isn't the captain of the football team by being a slouch. His entire life has been focused on doing better and making his goals a reality. He doesn't have time for distractions, but when a one night mistake lands on his doorstep his future suddenly looks a little different. He also doesn't sit around feeling sorry for himself, he's a take charge guy, but a little help from his hot neighbor certainly doesn't hurt.

Every guy who lives across the street from Gabby is pretty darn great, mostly in the way that each one would be terrific in their own story (crossing my fingers that it becomes a reality). It's a house full of football guys, but they all melt for the sweet baby who ends up on their doorstep. Gabby takes charge and whips them into shape which is hilarious and super sweet all wrapped up in an engaging story with lots of emotional and steamy moments.

This new world, although with some interconnected moments to Lex's past works, was a wonderful beginning with fantastic characters. I loved the trope, the story, the angst, absolutely everything was great.
