Revised: After some thought I increased my review because I liked the story.
I liked the story, but I listened to this book and the narrator was absolutely terrible. I’m listening to the 2nd book now and it’s the same narrator. He does better with the second book, but still not up to current audiobook standards. It’s really unfortunate because I like his voice, but it really detracts from the book and has to be killing sales.
ALDARAIA, Audiobook - The story and my interest in the topic is the only reason I could finish this audiobook. The narrator is subpar. Other than his reading and Bishop, Dan Carroll does a terrible job with most characters and emotions. His worse is Jennifer; she sounds slow-witted with a slow monotone and no emotional changes. Hardly any character has emotions and his differences between characters voices is slim. The "written" story lines and characters are interesting; best if this book is read. This book triggered memories for me with my Bishop and one my best friends... rest eternal. I was intrigued by the material presented. I will have to read again to get the wisdom as the narration was a distraction. Things like the Zohar and other sects of mysticism I am curious about. I remember when he sent me to the Fairfax district in Los Angeles to buy The Zohar. I was pretty much interrogated at the book store. They wanted to know how I knew about the books and they were not displayed, they had to go to the back to get them. Oh, and they were not cheap back then!
5 stars for the story 0 starts for the audio version. The speaker speaks in a dull and tedious monotone. With a better speaker this could have been 5 stars. I have not read nor listened to the 2 sequels but I noticed they have a different speaker, so I have high hopes. It took me almost a month to get through the audio version. I wish I had bought the print version instead.
