Lovely Lethal Gardens #14

Nabbed in the Nasturtiums

Rate this book
Riches to rags … Chaos might be slowing … Only a new murder occurs … Sending her off the trail again …

It’s been a tough few weeks since Robin and Mathew, Doreen’s ex-lawyer and her ex-husband, slid back into her life.
Okay, so maybe Robin isn’t here any longer to cause torment, but Mathew is. And he’s not planning to leave Doreen alone anytime soon, although thankfully he’s gone back home for a while. Trying to recuperate looks doubtful for Doreen, when a local gardener is kidnapped, while picking nasturtiums for dinner.

The case heats up when the missing man’s niece appears on Doreen’s doorstep, looking for help, including asking Doreen to accompany her to the police station.

Not at all sure what’s going on, but willing to help someone in need—particularly after having been a suspect herself—Doreen tags along, looking to do her good deed for the day.

But no good deed goes unpunished, and, when Mathew calls, Doreen gets more than she bargained for, including all the usual suspects: love, jealousy, and … greed. It takes everything from her feathered and furred critter team to keep her safe, as she digs to the bottom of yet another crazy case …

2.5

Yes, I keep reading this series, even though all of the books have been getting 2-3 star ratings from me. Why? Because I am obsessed with the love interest, even though this was book 14 and still nothing has happened, and because I am obsessed with Thaddeus the African Grey. While the quality of writing has diminished since the first book, I have hopes that it will get better, and I just need to see the series through til the end.

a 3.5 stars reads.

This series definitely one of my fav cozy mysteries. The story is always about Doreen and her fur babies with unique side characters around her that are so loveable like Nan and Mack.

No cold case this time for Doreen instead it's an ongoing case about missing person, typical Doreen she can't say no to any kind of case especially when someone contacting her to ask her to solve the case. So the journey to find out the truth begins.

Another fun, full of laughter read for me and the most I'm super excited and really love about is the blooming of Mack and Doreen relationship, because I adore these two, they're just so perfect for each other, their banter so refreshing and cute and sweet and I loveee it. There's actions too and I always love when the fur babies take actions, I just want to have Mug, Goliath and Thadeus for myself. Although the plot twist kinda confusing for me in the end, I still enjoying it nonetheless.

Totally recommended for anyone who loves a light and fun cozy mystery reads.

Doreen is out to solve the Bob Smalls murders, when a gardener is nabbed. While Mack tells her not to get involved Doreen just can't help herself. This one takes on a confusing life of its own and soon the pair find themselves in a rabbit hole. It's a wild ride to the end. I volunteered to read this book via Booksprout.

I really love this series. That being said, I did not love this book. It felt different from all the other books (not in a good way). Doreen came off more stupid than naive. There seemed to be story threads that led nowhere. I am looking forward to the next in series with hope that things will fall back into place.

I really love the way Mack is always checking up on Doreen. She's been through so much lately and is yet again healing from an injury. Although she's tired she's also getting bored so when Mack brings groceries for dinner but then has to run she wants all the information on that kidnapping...or Nabbed in the Nasturtiums.

We get a little review of what's happening with Robin's murder and Doreen's ex. You know of course he's not going to stay away especially since their divorce agreement is now null and void. I got a real kick out of Nick meeting her while she's out walking with the animals so she can give him some change to retain his council.

Then Mathew shows up expecting Doreen to just sign that same agreement again, boy is he delusional. I loved the way Nick and Mack both show up. Nick handled him expertly and implies Mack and Doreen are dating. Mack likes that idea.

Now after the confrontation with Mathew, Mack does take Doreen, Mugs, Goliath and Thaddeus out to lunch. This is their first real date! I was so excited.

With a bit of encouragement from her Nan, Doreen gets involved with one of the disappearances attributed to Bob Small, it was one of Nan's friend's nieces. Annalise Bergman was on her way home from ballet and never arrived. Her Nan has some things coming from her friend's family that may give additional clues so she's waiting on that. Of course Doreen keeps trying to get more on the kidnapping, it's sort of expected.

More cooking lessons, I love these so much, walks with the animals are always fun and sometimes dangerous. Did I mention Doreen gets involved with Mack's case because of the man's niece? No? Well that's how it happens and let me tell you this whole book is a wild ride!

I really can't wait for the next book in this series, they are fun, and intriguing with plenty of laughter and that beginning relationship that I am loving so very much.

Yet another brilliant book in the "Lovely Lethal Gardens" series.
Slightly dippy Doreen Montgomery was going through a traumatic divorce from her, wealthy, controlling husband, although it was her husband who was committing adultery with Doreen's Lawyer he was determined that he was going to keep everything, Doreen's lawyer thought differently.
Doreen lived alone in the house that her Nan had given her, because she had been a trophy wife she had no skills that would help her get a job so with no money she had to learn quickly.....or not.
Enter Corporal Mack Moreau of the Kelona PD, he became her friend, taught her to cook and look after the small amount of money that she had.
Doreen discovers that she had a talent as an amateur sleuth, much to the exasperation of long suffering Mack, she was good at solving cold cades and was getting quite a reputation.
When a young woman knocked on Doreen's door asking for help. Doreen should have run for the hills but of course she didn't.....this cold case turns out to be the most convoluted, complicated that Doreen had ever got herself involved in, Doreen was in deep trouble, Mack was worried, throw her ex husband into the mix and Doreen is out of her depth but does she give up ?, no, she carries on regardless.
This is a lovely cosy mystery with danger and humour thrown in, naïve Doreen and protective Mack are growing closer but is she ready for another relationship.
Doreen's menagerie of pets are really funny although definitely tongue in cheek, her wonderful Nan knows everyone and everything that is going on in Kelona and loves sharing her knowledge with Doreen. I look forward to the next book in the series.

It's been a tough few weeks for Doreen since her former lawyer Robin was murdered and her ex-husband Matthew started to try and get back into her life (and so far seems to be determined to not leave her alone). Doreen's recuperation seems doubtful when a local gardener is kidnapped while picking nasturtiums for dinner and she feels a need to get involved especially as the niece has turned up at her home asking for help, even by accompanying her to the police station. Keen to help and after understanding how hard it is to be a suspect, Doreen steps in to help. With the usual mix including love, jealousy and greed it will take everything from her animal companions to keep her safe. Can she get to the bottom of this without more injuries?

This was a really dramatic story that taught Doreen some home truths about how she is and what she needs to modify in her behaviour in order to protect herself and her heart in the future. I liked the way that her solicitor (and Mack's brother) knew her number and was clever enough to both protect her interests in the divorce from Matthew as well as try to protect Doreen from herself. I also loved that the relationship between Doreen and Mack seemed to be a little further forward (although don't get excited it really isn't much at all!). The self-analysis is valid for us all and not just for Doreen and the case in question. Easy to read and understand with a great mystery to solve for the reader too.

Doreen wants to get involved in Mack's current case, where a gardener has disappeared from the garden he was working in. Mack wants her to give it a rest, mainly because he is the official detective, but also because she needs some rest and recuperation after having been thrown around in the trunk of a car in her last adventure. Her grandmother Nan is disturbed because a good friend had a favored niece who disappeared 25 years before and there are some questions concerning this cold case, and the files she has received regarding a suspected serial killer. And then, out of the blue, she is contacted by the gardener's niece who wants Doreen's help because she doesn't think the police will take the case seriously because he uncle had been in prison. Doreen, with Thaddeus (the parrot), Goliath (the cat), and Mugs (her dog) in tow she gets involved in the twisty-turny case which seems to always bring up more questions than answers. At the same time, Nick, her attorney and Mack's brother files divorce proceeding with her ex, since the original lawyer (who has been murdered) was involved with the ex. With all the craziness, Doreen manages to get a little gardening in at Mack's mother's garden, and she and Mack seem to be moving closer to a relationship, but Doreen is gun shy. Her ex is not happy about the divorce proceedings and has threatened her. To say Doreen has a complicated life is an understatement. You will just have to read it and try to unknot all these threads on your own.

Nabbed in the Nasturtiums is the 14th book in the Lovely Lethal Gardens alphabet series. The book begins with Doreen recovering from the last case. Doreen has a knack for getting herself in the middle of murder cases. She usually can get a confession while being held at gunpoint by the murderer. This book was no different. Just like in the other books, her menagerie of pets (parrot, cat and dog) saves the day protecting her until Mack the cop shows up to arrest the suspect. Mack and Doreen spend a lot of time together eating meals. Mack even got all his friends to help donate material and build a deck for Doreen. I liked how their relationship has moved to the next level. Nothing physical, but they are starting to go on dates. Even though Doreen is afraid to have a relationship, each story brings them closer together. I like that the stories are starting to focus on the characters just as much as it does on the murder mysteries. As Doreen thinks about the life she gave up and the life she is living now. Doreen begins to see that Mack may like her as more than a friend. The question I have is, what will she do about it. I am looking forward to the next book to see how the relationship grows.

Wow! Complete confusion abides in this latest case for Doreen and Mack. She is pulled in by a family member, not such a cold case either.with so much already going on in her life she's not quite so on the ball, feeling drained and tired, she's supposed to be resting and sorting her cold case files out. I really enjoyed the extra sparks and Mack progress in this story, it seems she's more accepting to moving it forward a bit. The animals seemed less full on so maybe they were drained as well, there didn't appear to be their usual antics though they stepped up when needed most. I adore these stories, I often have a smile on my face while reading but found a few frowns as well trying to suss this one. Twists and turns were a real puzzle and I call this a joint solve for both Mack and Doreen, let's just keep fingers crossed for not getting lost in the Orchids up next. Fun, quirky and gripping often with suspense and cooking lessons lol, I think we need Mack and Nan's recipe book as well. Started 14/7/21 Finished 15/7/21

This is the fourteenth in the series. This book was my least favorite story in the series so far. I did not like that Darlene was portrayed as To Stupid To Live. I almost gave up on this story.

The redeeming value for me was Mack and his brother Nick, her lawyer. Mack is looking out for her safety and Nick is looking out for her financially. Doreen has earned her right to 50% of the business & estate. She worked just as hard to develop the business even though she wasn’t on the payroll. I believe Nick will be able to get her a very good settlement when the dust settles. Matthew is not anyone I would want in my life. He is a user and just down right mean. He only cares about himself.

The case of the missing uncle is bizarre. I couldn’t wait for it to be over. It is sad that mental illness is looked down upon and those suffering from it or associated with it want to hide it instead of getting help.

Looking forward to the next installment to see if Doreen has altered her perspective on her self-worth, and/or can accept other people’s help beyond handouts.

Well, this one she has to stay out. . It isn't a cold case, however, when the niece of the nabbed man comes by to see her she just has to get involved. She is begging her for help. Doreen calls Mack to let him know Denise is here and wants to help with finding her uncle. He lets her know she has to come to the station to give a statement and answer a few questions and she is so scared she begs Doreen to go with her. Of course, Mack is not happy about that and Doreen is ecstatic to help and see what is going on. Things are a bit off with how Denise is acting and even Doreen is feeling it. Still yet maybe it is because she is so tired. Having had so many injuries has taken its toll on Doreen but she can't rest she just keeps thinking about Denise and her uncle and what happened. This just gets better and better and no you don't want to miss a single book in the series.

Nabbed in the Nasturtiums by Dale Mayer
Lovely Lethal Gardens Series Book Fourteen
Doreen is at it again. She doesn’t mean to get herself into life-threatening situations, but she does. And she’s not good at listening either. Not to the handsome detective, Mack, who is always coming to her rescue…or his brother, Nick, the lawyer who has taken up her divorce case. With her ex trying to make her the obedient woman she’d been when married to him, she’s seeing she’s not entirely as independent as she thought, not quite out of her victim stage.
But, with the help of Mack, Nick, and her three pets: Mugs, Goliath, and Thaddeus, maybe, just maybe, she’ll get there yet once she learns not to trust everyone and to stop letting killers in her house.
Great cozy mystery. Wonderful characters…both human and furry and feathered.

This book was borderline ridiculous, especially toward the end. I listened to the audiobook, but I am not sure if the ebook would have been any different.

At this stage, I am fully invested. I have only missed reading 2 books out of the series now. I wanted to see what happens with Mack and Doreen's relationship, and with Doreen's soon to be ex husband.

I did not understand why there are animal haters in each book. I did not understand AGAIN why Doreen can stand up to criminals with guns, but not her former husband. I have also come to not understand what Mack wants with her.

I think that this was the most convoluted plot to date. Chaos Theory, really? Things like plots, subplots seem to make less and less sense as I move through this series. If it weren't for Doreen's animals, she would have been unalived several books ago. I don't think the new narrator helped this book much.

Yet, I am still committed to see this through to the end.

When Denise calls in the middle of the night and asked her for help, Doreen and we readers have no idea of the rollercoaster ride that we are about to embark on. With the help of her faithful entourage of animals she sets out to discover the truth and yet another cold case that turns into the same case that Mack is working on. I love reading these books they are so engaging. You can't put them down. This is one that I had to read in one day. I'm still waiting though on the edge of my seat to see what Mathew has planned for Doreen and I cannot wait for Mack and Nick to put him in his place when he tries something.

Doreen still hasn't recovered from the last adventure she was on but she can't help but want to know more about the gardener that was as she coined it nabbed in the Nasturtiums and not only does Mack not want her involved as it is an active case not a cold case but also she has more happening on her ex husband front that could turn nasty. There are some good twists while trying to work out what happened and why, but also a lot more danger involved that has you really concerned for Doreen, then when there appears to be a potential link to a serial killer and the letters along with diaries Nan gave her boy oh boy does things get interesting!!

Another fun romp with Darleen and Mack. Darleen needs to be careful Mack may not be around to always rescue her!!!
Doreen’s possible cold case and Mack’s kidnapped Gardner case may just be related. Join Doreen, Mack and her menagerie of animals as they find trouble all over town. This time Doreen is dragged into Mack’s case when she’s contacted by a relative of the kidnapped gardener, but, there’s something off about the case and the people involved and Doreen and Mack need to sort through the confusing clues before she’s the next one to disappear. Meanwhile, Matthew, Mack’s ex continues his quest to intimidate her, Nick, her new lawyer and Mack’s brother continues to fight for her, despite Darleen’s self sabotage, and Darleen’s keeps learning how to function in the real world.

This was another winner in this always enjoyable series. Once again Doreen and her oh, so charming menagerie are in the thick of it as a new mystery crops up. This cozy mystery offers up the perfect blend of suspense, drama, humor, emotion and slow simmering attraction to have me always more than eager to settle in for another case with this crew. Add to this the delightful Nan, who is always a hoot and the much put upon (good friend and potential love interest) Corporal Mack Moreau and you have a potent and addictive combination that keeps me very eager to return to This series again and again. This is my freely posted frank review.

Doreen is trying to recuperate from solving her last case, but her curiosity is quickly sparked by the kidnapping of a gardener that Mac is working on. Mac warns her to stay out of it but the gardener's niece shows up looking for help. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is Doreen's hardest case so far. I love how Doreen collects information, analyzes, and figures out whodunit. Her grandmother and her menagerie of pets always add so much to the story. I also love seeing her relationship with Mac start to grow beyond their friendship. There are plenty of red herrings to this story that add to this mystery.

This one had my head spinning with all the twists and turns, a whopping of a mystery and through it all Doreen deals with her ex and learning the nuances of a single women learning how to survive. I busted out laughing with the "cut a check" section, but then I thought wow, this could be a real life situation for some who had servants and was given money. Learning to survive. My heart did a pitter patter when Mack and Doreen went out for a date. Yes a D A T E. If you have read the series, you will understand. If you haven't I recommend you treat your self, and enjoy. Thank you for the arc! I voluntarily share my thoughts and opinions.

This incredible series continues to get better and I enjoy my "visits" to lovely Kelowa, British Columbia with Doreen Montgomery, gardener and amateur sleuth along with her pets as they catch murderers and solve crimes. I was thrilled that Doreen and Mack finally went on a date and hope their relationship will continue to develop into something beautiful. If you enjoy twisty cozies that you can't put down until you read the last word, you will love "Nabbed in the Nasturtiums", book 14 in the Lovely Lethal Gardens series by gifted author Dale Mayer. I think each story in this series is vastly improving by becoming more entertaining and interesting. Plus, Doreen's new life is evolving while shaping her into a totally different person than she once was, when she had been married to her ex and miserable. The sparks of romance between her and her handsome detective are starting to sizzle more often too! The pets have unique personalities adding a nice dimension to each book. I don’t regret the stories are shorter in comparison to other books either, as I find myself in good spirits after reading “The Lovely Lethal Garden series” and to me that's a big plus!

I have really enjoyed this series. Her animals are so fun. We didn't see as much of them in this one I felt, but they were still there.

She is finally getting somewhere with her divorce. Papers are filed, and now we wait.

I do notice that with each book, she is still struggling with her confidence, and sometimes I feel like she's doing good by the end of a book. Then, the next, she is struggling again. She was in an abusive relationship, and all that is normal, but sometimes it's bothersome, and I need her to continue from where she left off in the previous book.

This really is a cute series, and I so want her to succeed, just to show the stupid ex. Lol

3.5 rounded up

Doreen is back solving mysteries, only this time the person is alive. Something isn't quite right about this one, but Doreen can't say what it is, it's just a gut feeling.
Doreen is getting closer to Mac (for the love of love can they kiss already!!), and of course her fur babies are right by her side through everything.
While I am loving this series, the way Doreen is written is still irksome. She just learned she can make a salad, but somehow knows to to upload files and attach them to e-mail's?
Note to the Author: I also never want to see the word 'documents' ever again (just say paperwork, divorce papers or papers).

Doreen and the gang are back. Taking time after her last case, Doreen is still feeling off centre and is not sure what is going on. Learning everyday things such is banking is confusing her right now. Nick is working on her divorce which brings Matthew back into her life. Mack not liking that. With hints from her Nan, Doreen starts to see what is in front of her. A case that is not cold has Doreen going in circles.
A nice pace of story keeping in the series but very different this time. This kept me turning the pages wishing for more.

Wow! Doreen doesn't ever stop to rest even after conflict. She is at it again and seems happiest when she is deep in solving a case or two. She can be kind of a stinker but lovable as well. Almost ex-husband may not be almost at all and he's still up to his evil tricks. Seems impossible this series takes Doreen over no more than a year. She has accomplished so much in this short time with her pet friends. Much to Mack's dismay she is at it again in her ever entertaining way! Can't help but enjoy her antics and look forward to her next adventure!

Nabbed in the Nasturtiums

OMG! This story was totally twisted! This story definitely kept you guessing what was going on in every chapter. I was thoroughly confused just like Doreen. The last couple of chapters reminded me of Sybil - what a disturbed woman. I am totally impressed with the animals always coming to Doreen's rescue as is Mack. I am happy that she is finally looking at Mack in a slightly different light. Doreen had come a long way in this series. FANTASTIC job Dale! I would highly recommend this book!
