Devon is from the UK, having lived in many places until finally settling in the Midlands. His career in public services started in his teens and has provided a wealth of experiences, both good and some very bad, which form the basis of the book ideas that cause regular insomnia.
He first started reading for fun as an adult, having tried his hardest to avoid anything resembling academia growing up, and at that point the world became a far bigger place. He has been reading, at least one book at a time, ever since.
His debut works, the After It Happened series, (Survival, Humanity, Society) were published in April 2016 followed by Hope (July 2016) and Sanctuary (December 2016). The first part of the series concluded with the release of Rebellion which was published in June 2017.
Storming high into the charts with the first books of the After It Happened series, Devon launched into the top 10 sellers listings in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US, and he made the decision to write full time shortly after the launch of Hope.
Devon’s self-published beginnings caused a stir in the publishing world, and resulted in contracts with Podium Publishing for Audible, narrated by R.C. Bray (The Martian, Expeditionary Force, Arisen), before a publishing deal for kindle and paperbacks with Vulpine Press.
Further works have seen the start of a multi-author series, sci-fi/post-apocalyptic cross genre, futuristic dystopian and alternative history zombie apocalypse. Spin-off books from the After It Happened world have been announced for 2018.
Devon C. Ford… I hate you!! (No real spoilers included)
Because of this amazing book set, I have been forced and compelled to go to sleep after 1am every night for a week because I fell pray, not to the zombies…, no, to something so much more insidious instead the dreaded ‘I’ll just finish this chapter THEN I’ll go to sleep’, but I couldn’t could l because after I finished reading that chapter I wanted to read the next one, so I did.. you get the picture.
If you want to read an intelligent zombie book with world building so real you actually feel like you’re with the characters buy this book set, just don’t expect to get a good nights sleep for a while.
Also the only spoiler I’ll put in here. Nevin, pretty sure you’ll be rooting for him to meet a tragic end, you just won’t be able to help yourself 😁
The further I got into this the more and more characters kept being introduced. Most seemed so unnecessary and boring. I wish the author had of bottled up all of Peter’s story and had it as a stand alone. It was interesting, captivating and scary all at the same time. To read of a young child surviving through the apocalypse was different to a lot of other books out there. It definitely would have saved me from skipping through the book just to get to his parts. I found the soldiers parts, for the most, kept rehashing more of the same. It was the same fights over and over, the same ridiculous power struggles and in-fighting. I could skip whole chapters of their stories and not feel like I’d missed anything.
Apocalypse. The tale begins by introducing Peter, a young man, and his abusive, alcoholic mother. The location is London, England, and surrounding hamlets. The time is 1989. A virus resembling rabies has been released from an underground military laboratory and spread through the city. Looting, rioting, and death soon followed. The call to arms, or mobilization, rang throughout the military community. Squadron Sargeant Major (SSM) Dean Johnson rallied his troops, now only at half-strength due to a lack of turnout, organizing, and sending them out to provide security. Their base camp was an island connected by a bridge in the British Isles. Soon word came back that the dead were rising to attack, infect, and kill anyone they encountered. The apocalypse had begun. We follow Peter as he learns how to survive and deal with the Infected. At the same time, we follow SSM Johnson and his detachment as they do the same. Aftermath. Survivors, or as they were called refugees, were picked up on patrols or they came to the camp voluntarily for food and safety. More British military arrived at the camp to assess the situation, communicate with Command, and take charge of the operation. SSM Johnson remained in his position, arriving officers respecting his rank and experience. The camp became a refugee compound and additional survivors were transported to it. A new Commander with his team of U.S. Army Intelligence officers was on their way. They were to conduct a mission to the mainland to shut down two nuclear power stations. An armada of British, French, American, and Norwegian ships was gathering in the English Channel. This was to be the Combined Forces Headquarters. A huge swarm of the infected was headed toward the island camp. Meanwhile, Peter met Ember, a young girl he discovered hiding in an abandoned house and they traveled together. In Eastern Europe, Russian missiles began to fall to stop the infected hoard from crossing their border. As news reached Washington, the President ordered retaliatory strikes on Russia. Abandoned. The island base camp was running low on supplies and ammunition due to repelling wave after wave of infected. They had blocked the bridge with a Chieftain Main Battle Tank along with their other armor. They managed until an errant round from a shore bombardment took out the bridge and the tank. The base camp was now in danger of being overrun. Out at sea, an outbreak on a destroyer was raging due to one infected engineer brought back from a mission. Isn’t that the way it always happens? The news of Russia and The United States exchanging ICBMs and that the British Isles were cut off reached the camp. Left abandoned, their only hope now was to evacuate. Adversity. Leaving the island compound, SSM Johnson and the remaining soldiers found an abandoned village to hold up in. Eliminating a few infected, they searched for food, supplies, and ammunition. The weather was changing, soon winter would be upon them. They needed to find enough food to see them through. They came upon Peter and Amber who were very glad to join them. Two deserters, Sargeant Michaels and Trooper Niveens were occupying the same village on a hilltop, causing problems for SSM Johnson’s team. They were both after the same thing; supplies and safety. This would have to be settled once and for all. Adaptation. Relocating once again via ferries, SSM Johnson and crew found themselves in Scotland on the Island of Skye. A military outpost had already been established on the west side of the island, including U.S. Marines and a detachment of Navy SEALS. The scientists rescued from the mainland government lab, along with a CIA spokesperson were also brought there to set up a new lab. The SEALS' mission was to capture infected specimens for the new lab. First the foul-up, now try to fix it. On the east side of the island were the British contingent and the civilian survivors brought from the previous camp. The scientists unexpectantly came upon a remedy to stop the infected but wanted more testing. The CIA jumped upon the proposed solution, giving the go-ahead to the military to proceed. It appeared to work but it was too soon. At the west side lab, everything went wrong when they tried further testing. They were unprepared for another outbreak. The Island of Skye must be evacuated. Annihilation. The scientist's remedy had destroyed the slower-moving infected but had strengthened the faster, more cognitive to a higher level of response. Rather than improving the military’s position, it had made things worse. Escaping to the northwest shore of England, the British joined the American military on shore from the American blockade in the English Channel. Ultimately, all were evacuated and relocated to America. The British Isles were left on their own. A rather uneventful conclusion to such a long series.

Listening to John Rafter Lee as Sergeant Major Johnson saying, "F*** me sideways with a d*** chair" was priceless. Love his narration and command of accents, as always. Onto book 2 of 6!
Aftermath (Toy Soldiers #2) - 2.5/5 stars

John Rafter Lee narrating Sergeant Major Dean Johnson is the best part of book 1 and 2!
His acting and accent are perfect when he says, "Trooper Nevin. I can only assume, having never met the man, that your father wished you had been a wank! You, Trooper Nevin, are a 5'6" walking advert for condoms!"
My biggest complaint with this series so far is that I feel like all six books could've been condensed into one long book. There's not a lot going on in many of the chapters except explaining who the dozens of military personnel are, what they do, and what they're waiting for. But I'm sticking with it because of John Lee's fantastic narration. So onto book 3 of 6!
Abandoned (Toy Soldiers #3) - 1/5 stars

DNF. Not even narrator John (Rafter) Lee can save this one, unfortunately. The cast of characters keeps getting bigger with each book despite the death and mayhem. No one really gets more than a few paragraphs at a time, so there's no opportunity to get attached to anyone. Except Sergeant Major Dean Johnson, who I'm hardly getting any of in the third book of this series. Just lots of crazy stuff going down with no real progress being made plot or character development.
This series starts with a lot of military talk and descriptions of weapons and armoured vehicles. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy as much as "After it Happened" but as the characters develop (a particular skill of this author) I found myself invested in their ever changing community, marvelling at the resilience of our species and gained a lot of respect for military personnel. The last book is interesting to read in light of the current invasion of Ukraine. I felt the conflict of every day people wanting to help each other and big government making decisions for the greater good of groups rather than individuals. I will continue to read this author.
I don't give 5 stars unless I am completely blown away .This is a very good read . I like the authors take on the way zombies operated. I loved the addition of the German tank crew and the Norwegian special operatives . This book actually told a very good adventure story . It stayed away from jumping from gory spectacle to blow by blow decapitation in every battle . Yes there is plenty of blood and gore but in this book the people are the real story and of course thAt darn cat .
I found Devon. C Ford by reading Sanctuary, and was so enthralled with that series that just had to follow his style of writing.
This series is also excellent and I have read it at every opportunity so that I could follow the plot and the main characters. A superb story line that almost seems real. I'm quite pleased it's only fiction, we can certainly avoid Zombies. Carry on writing Devon, I'm sure your fan base is quite large and growing.
I'm not one to read books about zombies but I can say this series was a fantastic read. It read of people joining others after losing their families, killing their own families too. Meeting a boy of 9 who found a little toddler, Amber and had to kill zombies to save them both. People meeting up then getting split but meeting up again. I'm not ashamed to sat I had tears running down my face at the end. I really, really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
I enjoy post-apoc fiction. A zombie series? I was hesitant. But I truly enjoyed this series. You become invested in the characters (to me, this means the author is just as invested). The storyline keeps you wanting more. The epilogue, IMHO, wrapped the series up in a quite satisfying manner. Yes there were some typos and other editing issues. But overall, a compelling story with well developed characters. I do not do spoilers or story synopses. I suggest you read this series yourself. It is well worth it.
What an exciting, unforgettable, intense, dramatic, well written, perfectly choreographed series!!!!!!
From page one I was total engrossed in the premise of the story line ( as an individual who has never gotten into zombies) have lost sleep reading this. I can't overstate my gratitude to Devon Ford who created this remarkable story of tragedy, despair, hopelessness, and yet hope. Through out this series each character evolved and became a person who you could actually believe was existing in our home town! Remarkable Job😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
This series just doesn't stop....ever! There just isn't any dull moments here. I really can't give any real specifics without spoilers, which I don't believe in ever giving whether the book is good or bad. I also don't like to rehash what it's about or the characters as you will get most of that in the authors description of the book...psst it's got ZOMBIES.... :). Anyways, read this series and believe me you'll love it as much as I did. I wish I could say more, but just read it!!! Enjoy!!!
More zombies than you could stab with a pointy stick. Loved the location, as I'm british. I chuckled to myself while reading the banter between the characters from different services. My one uncle was a para, another was army and my cousin was navy. So the jargon was spot on. A great end of the world collection to read while surviving the pandemic..
This story really grabbed my attention and cost me a lot of sleep. The world building was really well done and everything was believable. I especially loved the way the characters were written. Some I loved, some I hated, but they were all very real to me. I'll definitely be looking for more by this author.
I really enjoyed this series of books. A great Zompoc adventure, interspersed with a retro 80s feel. Non-stop action, good variety of zombie types, great characters, and an excellent story arc. Thoroughly enjoyable for zombie fans who like attention to detail.
Enjoyed this series although the proof reading let it down a bit. Also, ‘style’ is how something looks - the correct word for the wooden steps through a hedge is ‘STILE’! Would like to know what happened to the CIA people and whether they succeed in their mission if another book is ever considered!
The first book was a bit boring. But the author knows how to use the English language. There a number of breaks in the story that you don't want. Th reason is you want to know what happens right then. Also? Do not GRT too attached to some characters! There is a lot of death in this series.
I usually don’t care for zombie stories. This went beyond the dead tearing up the living. Although that was a lot. The closeness of the characters growing together made it a great experience. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a good read. I don’t really like the star grades but gave it a three. So read and enjoy.
Start to finish it never disappoints. One of the most addictive books I have read in a long time. It's always good to discover new authors with this level of talent. Can't wait to read his other works.
One of those books you just can't stop reading. The story just got better with each chapter. Lots of info on military weapons that went over my head, you just learn to skim over that. Truly enjoyed this series.
If you like apocalyptic fiction this is a must read.
It's a brilliantly compelling series and without doubt one of the best in its genre I have read. If you only get chance to read one zombie series make it this one.
Very good reading and well worth the the time after the first book it was hard to out down The other books were all good and well worth reading the was just what I like.
Loved these books not one bad thing can I say.All of the characters were believable .I know when I have read a good book as I don't want it to end. Well done mr.Ford.
What a great read. I enjoyed the full series and didn’t want it to end. Some brilliant characters and a really good UK based zombie apocalypse with a difference.
A complete change from the mostly USA based Apocalyptic yarns. The CIA gets another black Mark to it’s reputation, although one could argue that is has no reputation left to be sullied.
It was well written...characters that captured your mind and heart.... me you weep and be joyful at success. It would be good for anyone to read. Very realistic and concise
I have submitted reviews for each title contained within this series box set. Those reviews can be found on the individual title's pages. These reviews were written after I had listened to the audiobook of each title. (Audible Membership)
Great British Zompoc, I really enjoyed Toy Soldiers, along the same vein as Michael Stephen Fuch's Arisen. A well deserved 5 stars from me. I've actually read this series twice, and will do so again.
There are many, many characters to keep sorted, but the author tells a compelling, if somewhat horrifying, epic story. Worth reading, but not late at night!
It's a rare book which can invest one in imaginary characters and Mr. Ford manages this very skillfully. I thoroughly enjoyed this series of books and highly recommend them to anyone looking for zombie apocalypse genre novels. Well done.
