…mistress. Jade flinched at the label. She’d never thought of herself as such a person.

My Review:

Earlier in the year, I read this author’s delightfully humorous Willow’s Wedding Vows and promptly added her entire listing to my TBR. Silly me, when I started this book, I didn’t realize I was currently picking up her initial foray into her darker side by delving into her first thriller. Thankfully, Ms. Viggiano didn’t leave her sense of humor or witty banter behind and frequently tucked in snarky exchanges and musings as well as wryly-amusing observations.

The pacing was a bit disconcerting and the storylines were slow to evolve yet my curiosity was well teased and taunted with sporadically dropped breadcrumbs and seeds to keep the little pea in my brain busy and engaged in gathering clues and formulating hunches.

I struggled with the unstable main character of Jade as she was the type of person I go out of my way to avoid in the real world as I am retired no longer have to accommodate crazy. Jade was deeply damaged, highly paranoid, devious, snide, arrogant, hostile, OCD, and generally obnoxious to almost everyone. The secondary characters were more endearing although they were also a peculiar lot of strangely torqued yet compelling and enigmatic personalities that added intrigue and flavor to the suspense.

Given this adroit author’s flexibility and creative straddling of genres, I'm curious to see what the wily minx scribbles out next.

Ummmm.... I really don't know where to start with this one. Insane characters ✔ Creepy neighbor ✔ Mystery shenanigans ✔... all things that I love. But sadly, this one didn't work for me for a lot of reasons. It starts off completely bananas... and I LOVE me some bananas! But then it just goes sideways and I don't think a perplexed look left my face for the first 75% and then I just got angry.

The main character, Jade, is completely unlikable - and as y'all know, I love to hate on characters... but she is absolutely vile, a total bitch to everyone and if she "mentally punched the air" one more time I was going to scream. A couple of examples: she "wanted independence" so with some financial help from her parents, got her own home 🤨. Then doesn't cook because food is just a necessity that she doesn't derive any pleasure from (ok, ok, that one's not bad, I just disagree 😉). It honestly hurt to be in her head. So, luckily we also get the POVs of some of the other characters... and they're all a bit whack-a-doodle themselves. Now, you're probably going to ask why I didn't DNF... well, admittedly, I DO love me some crazy and I'll suspend all the belief if it's insane in the membrane in the best way. Hear me? ... sigh.

Unfortunately the dialogue was bad, the whole story felt disjointed. We never get back to a certain part of Jade's personality that I feel needed to be addressed. The timeline of a certain relationship just felt unreal and forced. The only character I felt bad for was Puddles, Jade's cat. And then, I still waited. Waited for what surely will be a psychotic ending that will leave me satisfied. Right? SURELY?! Nope.... I got left hanging and then punched in the face with an epilogue that was highly unnecessary... though I understand "why not add THIS sour cherry on top of this weird ass sundae".

Look, I'll likely be the minority in this. And if you like completely insane thrillers with a lot of WTF, then this will absolutely be the read for you. It is chock full of these moments. And honestly, please do read this so I have someone to discuss this with. 😏

Jade Fergusen is looking for nothing more than a fresh start at life after wasting the past ten years with a married man. His broken promises of leaving his wife for Jade pushed her over the edge. Her move to Gersham Terrace was the change she needed to get on with her life for the better. Only, not everything is what it seems on her street and watchful eyes know everything.

Well, I must say there are definitely an interesting group of characters in this story. Jade is quite cuckoo for cocoa puffs, nuttier than a fruitcake, and has taken a ride on the crazy train. Then you have her next door neighbor, Greg Good, who may even give Norman Bates a run for his money. Needless to say, I never warmed up to either of them. Of course Jade and Greg aren’t the only ensemble in the cast of players. We also have Dee, a forty something woman who recently moves in and Brad, a hunky neighbor with his own checkered past. Out of all the characters Jade irked me the most. She is rude, paranoid and well….kinda crazy. She is not a likeable character and I really couldn’t find any redeemable qualities in her. Okay, maybe one. She did love Puddles who by far is my favorite in the story. I mean what is not to like about a cute cuddly cat. Jade, stop letting him out of the house ya nutty! Cats belong indoors where they can’t get hurt! Grrr!

The story is pretty simple and I pretty much guessed what was going on from the beginning. Although, the fun was in watching Jade lose her sh*t throughout the entire story. I mean what do you expect dating a married man for ten years. I call it karma! I definitely did have a creepy vibe throughout the story and it kept me on my toes, especially since I am in fear of being watched late at night or someone peeking through my windows. Yes, I am the one staring out the windows in complete darkness with the light of my phone to make sure no one is in my yard. Hey, it has happened before! So Jade, I feel your pain and can sympathize slightly, cause it kinda felt good seeing someone getting the better of you.

The Watchful Neighbour is definitely an interesting read, quite creepy and will have you looking out your windows and making sure you double locked your doors! Best not to read at night if you ever want to sleep again.

Firstly I would like to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for my spot on this blog tour and to the publisher for my copy of this ebook.

This is the authors first psychological thriller and I sincerely hope it will not be her last. This was an excellent mysterious read which I read in only 2 sittings.

The story follows Jade trying to rebuild her life after a ten year affair with a married man goes terribly wrong. She finds herself a new job, new home – fresh start, but it wasn’t quite the fresh start she had hoped for.

I absolutely loved this story, it was a fantastic read with some exceptional characters. Although I figured out who jade’s new neighbour was the moment she introduced herself I had no idea it would lead to where it did.

Throughout the novel there were times when I was in two minds – was jade’s neighbour really messing with her head, or was she just paranoid and deluded? Turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong but I believe that is what the author wanted and I couldn’t believe my eyes when the truth unfolded. It was definitely an OMG type of moment.

The characters in this story were incredibly well written, as much as I though Jade was a bit of an odd ball, she was still by far my favourite character – she was a little strange but she was funny and quick witted. Saying that I do think Dee Parker was the best written character – she was certainly the underdog of this book.

This is a well written debut novel.

Jade Ferguson needs a fresh start after her affair with a married man ends. She finds herself at Gresham Terrace. Her neighbours seems friendly enough but as she has had her trust broken into smithereens before she’s hesitant to get close to anyone. When strange things start happening she believes it’s her neighbour Greg.

I thought this was a good read. I’ll definitely be wanting to read more from this author in the future.

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

I am excited to be taking part in the #BlogTour for Debbie Viggiano's debut psychological thriller THE WATCHFUL NEIGHBOUR.

New job. New home. New neighbours.

When Jade Ferguson decides on a fresh start when her ten year long affair with married man and boss, Tom Harrison, comes to an explosive end, little did she know that her troubles were only just beginning.

Moving into 3 Gresham Terrace is meant to be just that - a fresh start for a broken heart. But for Jade it seems trouble has a way of finding her. Or is it karma for ten years of lies? For ten years of sneaking around with someone else's husband, waiting for him to leave his wife to be with her? For ten years of being a naive gullible fool for believing his every lying word? Tom Harrison broke Jade's heart. He devastated her...and for quite a while afterwards, there was no coming back from that. But now she has a new life, a new job, a new home...a new start. But is she ready to be friends with the neighbours too?

Greg Good lives at number 2 and tried to welcome Jade upon her arrival but Jade was having none of his friendliness and, given her broken past, she felt she had good reason not to trust him. But when he told her he was a keyholder to not only her property but everyone else's in the Terrace, Jade was incensed. What right did he have to hold a key to her home? What if he gained access while she was at work? She demanded the keys to her property immediately...but he refused, citing he had been entrusted by the property's owner, Mrs Simms, to always have a key should the need to gain access ever arise.

She meets friendly Brad Grimshaw from number 5 while returning home one evening and despite his best efforts to engage her in conversation, Jade politely refused bordering on rude. But there was something about Brad that she found instantly attractive. That twinkle in his eye, the mischievous smile, his friendliness. But she didn't move to Gresham Terrace to make friends...she came here for a new start. But isn't that what you do when you move to a new neighbourhood? Isn't that what a fresh start entails? Making friends?

Shortly after moving in, another neighbour takes up residence in the house next door to her - in number 4. Dee Parker is a forty-something woman with a peroxide blonde bob sporting a very red lipstick. Despite Jade's attempts at ignoring her, Dee will not be swayed and tries to engage her new neighbour in conversation. Jade is horrified when Dee asks her if the men who live on either side of them - Brad of number 5 and the creepy Greg at number 2 - were good looking enough to take a stab at? Jade assesses Dee to be well out of their age bracket and didn't think either man would be interested...but it certainly wasn't her place to say.

Despite rebuffing each of her neighbours' attempts at befriending her, Jade concentrates on settling into her new life...alone, aside from her rescue cat Puddles. But no sooner has she settled in that Jade discovers that there's something not quite right about her new home. The twitch of the neighbour's curtains next door seemingly watching her every move makes her feel increasingly uncomfortable. And then strange things begin to occur inside her house. The cat flap is locked when she knows she left it open. Her precise and symmetrical placement of her perfume bottles on her vanity are moved to within touching distance - something she never does. Her shoeboxes are moved around haphazardly. Her wardrobe smells of her neighbour's mother's cloying rose perfume. Things go missing, and then they reappear again. Parcels sent to her that she didn't order. And then her kitchen window is smashed.

Jade is convinced this is the work of her creepy neighbour Greg Good since he is the keyholder of the property and could easily gain access to her house. She ordered spy gadgets in the form of "magic eye" clocks trained on both the front and back doors. She even went as far as to change the locks. All to no avail. Still she arrives home to find he has been in her house once again. She confronts him angrily...and is left looking like a lunatic who is stark raving mad in the pouring rain. No one, not any of her neighbours believe her when she accuses Greg of gaining access to her home and messing with her head. Why would he? After all, he is the sole carer to his elderly mum who has dementia. But Jade knows it's him. And she is going to prove it.

And then Puddles goes missing...

It is hard to review this book without giving too much away but I have to say that it seriously messes with your head. It is so well written and so compelling that it is hard to believe that this is Debbie Viggiano's debut into the psychological thriller genre. She has crafted an ingenious plot that is so clever and so captivating that like a car crash, you find yourself unable to drag your eyes from the pages as you flip them at the speed of knots.

THE WATCHFUL NEIGHBOUR is terribly claustrophobic and gives you the sense of being watched and/or going mind boggling crazy trying to work out if Jade has due cause to be concerned or if it is paranoia talking. One would think having a neighbourhood watch programme would make one feel at ease, but this does anything but. You find yourself questioning the merits of her arguments or if she really is barking. And although I had my suspicions (which were correctly identified in the reveal), I was still second guessing myself the whole way through. Honestly, THE WATCHFUL NEIGHBOUR plays with your mind just as much as it does Jade's. And that's what makes it a spine-tingling creepy thriller.

I cannot say more than go out and get your hands on this book! You won't be sorry as it will have you second guessing yourself the whole way through too, I'm sure. I look forward to seeing what other thrillers she has to offer in the future.

Never mind the romance genre, Viggiano has cracked the thriller genre with this creepy stalkerish tale that will appeal to fans of psychological thrillers.

I would like to thank #DebbieViggiano, #RachelsRandomResources, #UnicornPublishing for an ARC of #TheWatchfulNeighbour in exchange for an honest review.

I have read and loved the books written by this author. I was used to her publishing funny stories but with this book she made a u turn. I was very curious to find out what she had in store for her readers.

Was I surprised? No, of course not because I already knew she is a talented writer and I think that making people laugh is as difficult as making people’s hairs on the back of their necks stand up.

There are different types of thrillers. I would put this one in the category “softer”, but that does not mean that I did not enjoy the book. There was suspense, there were mind games and there were different candidates for the role of culprit. So, enough to keep one entertained.

Jumping to conclusions is never good. The problem is that you focus on one thing while the danger lurks in a different corner. Karma Is never far away, but some have other opinion about how karma should work. 4 stars

Thank you, Debbie Viggiano and Rachel’s Random Resources

I’ve read many books by this author, but they have all been light-hearted and romantic comedies – I’ve never read a thriller by her so was really interested to see what it was like! Jade Ferguson has moved into a new house following a relationship breakup which resulted in a mental health breakdown. Her new neighbours seem nice enough, apart from one, Greg Good. Mr Good is good by name and good by nature, keeping an eye on the street whilst people are out. When strange things happen whilst Jade is out at work, she begins to suspect that someone is entering her house, and she thinks she knows who it is…

This was a great suspense filled thriller! I liked Jade’s character, and although I did think that perhaps a lot of her problems were brought on by her own actions over the last few years, it was also obvious that she had been kept hanging on by her married lover. A fresh start was what she needed and this house seemed perfect. Her new neighbour, Greg Good, seemed friendly enough, and whilst I think I’d be reassured that there was someone keeping an eye on the street’s comings and goings, I could see it from Jade’s point of view that there was ‘keeping an eye out’ and invading someone’s privacy!

The book started well, filling in the background of Jade’s 10-year relationship with a married man. The story however really started to move up a gear once she’d moved into the house. It was difficult to work out if a lot of it was Jade’s insecurities and her mental health issues, or whether there really was something going on. There weren’t many characters in the story, so it was easy to keep track of who’s who, but I have to admit I didn’t really like any of them other than Jade. I was overly suspicious of all of her neighbours, but I just couldn’t put my finger on why! The author kept me hanging on until well into the book before revealing little hints as to what was actually going on!

I really enjoyed this book and found it captured my attention right from the beginning, with plenty of mystery and tension. It was definitely a read which set my nerves on edge and was filled with lies, mistrust and unease! Make sure you read to the very end though as it certainly sent shivers through me!! Great read, would definitely recommend!

The Watchful Neighbour
Debbie Viggiano

With her first psychological thriller Debbie Viggiano gives us a fun ride. Jade Ferguson, who is extremely unlikeable, has just ended a relationship with her married boyfriend/boss Tom during a client meeting. Very hurt and angry at being lied to and that he never left his wife as he promised (do they ever?), Jade has kind of a breakdown. When she decides to start over she finds herself in need of a place to live.

Gresham Terrace seems to be the perfect solution. Jade moves in to #3 with her rescue cat Puddles and meets several of her neighbors, rather unwillingly. Greg Good (#2) is a career for his mother and kind of an odd guy. Brad Grimshaw (#5) is very attractive and friendly even if she is incredibly rude to him. Then there is Dee Parker (#4) she is always trying to engage Jade and make friends but Jade just wants to be left alone to try and start over. Even more upsetting is the fact that Greg is a key holder for the landlord, meaning he has access whenever he wants.

When weird things start happening (objects seeming moved, her cat going missing), she suspects someone has been entering her apartment when she isn’t home. Are her suspicions of Greg correct or is someone else out to harm Jade?

This was a pretty quick read and not bad for a thriller. As most thrillers nothing is really what you think, although we do get some surprising and not so surprising reveals at the end. I enjoyed this book even as much as I HATED Jade, she’s whiny and self righteous even after we find out she’s been in a decades long affair with her boss (this comes out very early so not a spoiler). Ms. Viggiano did a good job with her fist thriller and I hope she writes another.

I give this 3.75/5 stars

Thank you to Rachels Random Resources Book Tours and author Debbie Viggiano for the review copy of this book. As always all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have been a fan of Debbie’s work for a while now. I have enjoyed each and every one of her books to date. When I heard that Debbie was going to branch out and write a psychological thriller, I knew that I had to read it just as soon as possible. I have just finished reading it and it was certainly one hell of a read and then some. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Watchful Neighbour’ but more about that in a bit.
I became addicted to this story as soon as I started the first page. The book seemed to develop a hold over me and it was a hold that I wasn’t going to break. I had my own suspicions as to what was going to happen and I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or if I had the wrong end of the stick entirely. The pages seemed to turn at speed as I worked my way through the book. I can’t say that I especially liked any of the characters as they all seemed to be hiding something or they seemed a bit shady and they gave me the heebie jeebies. I found this to be a gripping read, which held my attention throughout and had me on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion.
‘The Watchful Neighbour’ is superbly written but then I wouldn’t expect anything else from Debbie Viggiano. In ‘The Watchful Neighbour’ Debbie has created a tightly plotted story with more twists and turns to it than you would find on a ‘Snakes & Ladders’ board. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly fast pace throughout. I felt as though I was part of the story myself and that’s thanks to Debbie’s very vivid and realistic storytelling.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Watchful Neighbour’ and I would recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Debbie’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

The watchful neighbour by Debbie Viggiano is her first foray into the thriller category and she has created a story that makes you a little jumpy and distrustful of almost every character in the book.
We meet Jade Ferguson who has moved into a new home due to her splitting with her partner and experiencing a mental breakdown. All the neighbours at her new home seem nice, well, apart from Greg Good. He is TOO good, keeping an eye on everything when the neighbours are out. Weird things start happening when Jade is out at work. She thinks someone is going in her house while she is out and she has an idea who it may be.
I liked Jade, a woman who has paid dearly for a mistake in her life, and you see that she was previously in a self fulfilling prophecy, creating some of her own issues due to not letting go. A fresh start for her is the best thing possible, new house, new people around her. We learn of Jade's affair with a married man that lasted ten years and then she moves home, this is when the suspense begins.
This is a great premise for a book and one that makes you think, what is the line between keeping an eye on things and being classed as intruding or invading ones privacy? The fact that, due to Jade's previous breakdown it does make you wonder is it Jade's paranoia or are strange things really happening? I was really wondering about every neighbours motive throughout so I didn't really warm to them, but this made for a suspenseful read that's for sure. The mystery, unease and mistrust had me flipping them pages right to the end, which, I must say is something you should not miss! A great book that I can highly recommend.
Thank you to Rachel's Random Resources and Debbie Viggiano for the copy of the book to give you my thoughts, on it's publication day.

The Watchful Neighbour follows Jade Ferguson as she embarks on a new life after the breakdown of her relationship with a married man. Moving to a new home is just the fresh start she needs, but what she didn’t expect that comes with it, is the neighbour from hell…

The story is interesting and does not lack in the creepy factor. While it does move at a slower pace, it still had me wanting to flick the pages to see how it was all going to unfold. Although its outcome was no surprise, it still made for an entertaining read.

The only issue I had with this book is Jade. She was not a likeable character at all. Whether this was the authors intention or not, I don’t know, but it was a challenge to connect and find any sympathy towards her, although I did try with what she goes through.

The Watchful Neighbour is Debbie Viggiano’s first foray into the psychological thriller genre and is a solid read. It is well written, kept my attention throughout and I will be on the lookout for more books from her in the genre going forward.

📸The Watchful Neighbour
I am absolutely thrilled to start the publication day and blog tour of The Watchful Neighbour.
Thank you to Debbie Viggiano and Rachel at Rachel's Random Resources for giving me an advance copy of this.

📸When Jade Ferguson’s affair with a married man abruptly ends, she’s devastated.

📸There is no quick fix for a broken heart. A fresh start is required.

📸New job. New home. New neighbours.

📸The residents of Gresham Terrace seem pleasant enough.

📸Except for one…

📸O.M.G! What can I say about this book that would do justice to the story Debbie has written.

📸Right at the beginning it hooks you in and grabs your interest from the very first chapter. The suspense builds throughout the story and there were times reading it that I physically jumped when I read some parts.

📸I found myself flipping my opinion countless times about who was involved and whether I felt sympathy for Jade and whether her past experiences justified the way she was treated or how she spoke to people.

📸The short chapters meant it was a zippy read for me and I found myself carrying my kindle everywhere just so I could fit in one more chapter!

📸I was kept guessing right up to the end and was not disappointed.

📸An absolute must read of a book and can seriously see this being made into a film.

📸I am relatively new to blog tours and this is my second book read.
What an amazing read 5/5

loved this book from the very beginning it had you gripped. We meet jade Ferguson who moves into Gresham terrace after living in an institution after having spent 10 years of her life with an older married man. That ends very badly. So is this the fresh start she needs.
We meet the neighbours are they all what they seem???

Mr Greg good is a neighbour hood watch man that also has a set of keys to the property in case of an emergency.
Dee who lives next door and seems nice enough. And brad who she quite likes but doesn't want to get involved with at the moment.

After moving in she finds that bits get moved around her house is this what really happens or is her mind playing tricks on her?

This had me hanging till the end I did not work out who it was till literally the very end of the book.

I would highly recommend this book.

This is an addictive story. The suspense builds as the story progresses, and every chapter brings a new twist. Who to believe? Who is the true antagonist in this claustrophobic, creepy domestic suspense?

Jade tries to make a new start after a messy love affair and subsequent mental health issues. She's not an easy character to like, or understand, and the extent of her mental health issues are unclear. She makes a good unreliable protagonist.

This is a multi-viewpoint story which adds to the plot's complexity and suspense. All the neighbours have secrets and are unreliable, especially since one may be the story's antagonist. This is a well-paced story that held my interest, and the final twist ends the story perfectly.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My favourite genre for novels is thrillers so I was so excited to read this book and it turns out it is a perfect blend of Debbie Viggiano’s writing style and a thriller narrative.

This author writes in such a way that you can picture what is being described so clearly. The characters in this book are interesting as to begin with none of them are particularly likeable but I found how I felt about each character changed multiple times as the book progressed.

As a debut thriller this book definitely ramped up the tension and had some surprises as well.
I definitely recommend this book, it will keep you turning the pages that’s for sure.

Loved! Loved! Loved!

When I first read the synopsis, I really looked forward to reading and I wasn’t disappointed.

It had me hooked from the start, there were enough (well never really enough) twists and turns that kept me reading, my only criticism was that I finished it really quickly and wanted to to keep reading.

I am really looking forward to another of Debbie’s book and definitely recommend The Watchful Neighbour.

Such a different tead by Debbie, and I was pleased that I could get into reading this book just like I had with all the others.
Very gripping stuff with a twist at the end which I didn't see coming
Love it!! Think Debbie should write more thrillers like this

Not going to lie, I got a bit bored with this book about half way through & just skipped to the end to find out who it was. I normally really enjoy books by this author but this one just did not engage me, I just found it boring & uninteresting. It could have cut to the chase much sooner instead of just dragging the pointless story out. Glad it wasn’t expensive.
