Bella Black isn’t searching for a new job or a new location, but it seems one has found her. Bella’s life could certainly use some shaking up, especially with her divorce from Mark in the process. When the new company, Acorn Consulting, makes her an incredible job offer, it doesn’t take much convincing for her to accept. She’ll miss all of her friends in London, but the idea of living in a small village is appealing.
The small village is welcoming and the neighbors are – well – neighborly. But there is that one strange, eccentric woman, Maggie Thatcher, who keeps turning up at Bella’s door to give her a welcome gift – then taking it back. Bella’s job is great and her work colleagues are competent and friendly. As Bella learns more about the company, and its charitable arm, OAK, she begins to think something is just a bit off-kilter.
People have disappeared, and Bella has come into possession of something that might point to wrong-doing. She can’t make heads or tails of it herself, but she has no idea who she can trust to help her figure it out. Everyone seems very convincing, but they can’t all be telling the truth.
This was the author’s debut book and she came up with a really interesting idea for a storyline. For me, however, it just fell flat. The characters were cardboard and I never managed to relate to any of them – except Maggie Thatcher – now she was funny and I liked her. The scenes that should have been exciting and on-the-edge-of-your-chair were more like reading a newspaper account – just dry and straightforward.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Uplifting mystery thriller
Bella is offered a new job away from London and jumps at the chance to start a new life after her divorce.
In a sleepy Wiltshire village Bella finds her new neighbours friendly, including the somewhat eccentric woman who keeps bustling into her house. Bella’s job is great despite the occasional odd going on, and perhaps there is the possibility of romance with a colleague. Soon a beautiful work project is revealed, with a few minor drawbacks. As Bella learns more and more about her job, and the villagers, so she discovers a mystery that becomes a race against time to solve.
A wonderful, uplifting, entertaining and often amusing book, where people are either good or villains - you guess which. Mysteries need solving and the action heats up as Bella tries to find out what is going on. A mystery thriller with great characters and a story to keep you intrigued right up to the very end.
5*s because I loved every moment! This mystery thriller has everything - characters that make you wonder, action, humour and positivity and plenty of guessing as to what is going on. Great read!

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author, Serpentine Books and Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources blog tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*
Acts of Kindness has the tone and style of a light-hearted romcom, crossed with the plot of a Grisham-esque thriller!
Bella joins Acorn Consulting after some VERY persuasive headhunting, only to find that not only is the company hiding a mysterious – if charitable – secret, but that she has no idea who she can trust when things start to get really odd and quite dangerous. Because sometimes even the best intentions can go astray, and some people will go to any lengths to achieve their ends.
I couldn’t stop reading this book, as I really needed to know what was going on at Acorns, and who wasn’t what they seemed (I frankly suspected just about everyone at some point or other!). The plot did require quite a hefty suspension of disbelief, in terms of Acorns and the OAK Institute, and all its attendant weirdnesses, but I was quite happy to just go along with things because the journey was so entertaining.
I was particularly fond of Oscar and his mother, and would happily read more from them, with Bella as the side character instead – they were so funny, but also quite touching. I found Bella a little harder to engage with, as she seemed like a little bit of an ‘Everyman’ character, with nothing that particularly drew or repelled me. Still, she acquits herself well as the action uncoils, and has her priorities in the right places – she grew on me!
This is a really fun, and unexpected read, that kept me guessing in every aspect – romance and mystery – and packed in plenty of action too. I love the whole Acorn/OAK concept and the message about the responsibility for kindness and would definitely read more from this author. I enjoyed this fresh, genre-busting approach: who knows what she’ll come up with next?!
'‘I can’t tell you what the OAK Institute does.’ Isadora paused and looked down the lens, unblinking. ‘I can promise you that its aims are for the good of humanity all over the world and there is nothing illegal or immoral involved. However, its work must remain strictly confidential. If you accept the job here at AC, you will go through a three-month induction, after which, if we feel certain you can maintain confidentiality, you will begin working for OAK.’'

About the Book: Bella Black has been recruited to work in the marketing department at Acorn Consulting (AC). Part of that job description has her working for the OAK Institute which is the humanitarian part of AC. The catch is she has to keep that part of the job secret from everyone outside the organization.
Being recently divorced and ready to get out of London, Bella decides to take a chance and see what OAK is all about.
When she first moves into her new home, she meets Maggie Thatcher who seems a little off kilter and warns her about working at Acorn Consulting. You see, Maggie’s husband, Teddy, who worked at AC disappeared on his way to work and has not been seen since. Maggie blames AC for Teddy’s disappearance.
Bella is on a private island on a team bonding experience for OAK and she sees Teddy. This sets off a chain of events that involves kidnapping, incriminating information in a hidden USB, and a conspiracy theory about the very fabric of how we view kindness.
My Thoughts:
I don’t want to give to much information away about this one because I don’t want to spoil this intriguing read.
You will find out in the book what OAK stands for, what it does and how that quest to uphold a family legacy turns from good intentions to illegal activities.
This is one of the most creative plot ideas for a thriller that I have come across and I loved the entire flow of the book. This book has the spectrum from kindness to corrupt in the extreme and it is inventive and well thought out.
The characters are all very well developed and I was mesmerized by each character’s part in the plot.
This book comes out tomorrow {3/11} and I highly recommend this debut writer and book!

Bella black doesn’t think she is anything special, but she is recently divorced and could do with a fresh start. When she is offered a new job, away from the hustle and bustle of her old life, she jumps at it. Oak Institute resides behind massive gates and feels like a Tardis to Bella, who always gets lost just going to her own office.
What is very disturbing, is the reaction of some people in the village where she lives, when she says she works there. What begins as a welcome ends in an abrupt departure and warning to leave Oak Institute before its too late!
This story pulled me in with its hidden secrets and mysterious goings-on, so it was impossible to put down. I liked Bella from the start who is willing to push herself way past her comfort zone to help other people, even if it means risking her new position at Oak Institute. Bella does have some lighter moments with her instant attraction to someone at work.
It is such an unusual story, an intriguing plot with some interesting characters. The pace changes in the last quarter of the story, as it intensifies. The puzzles of the past begin to fit with the present-day as everything comes together. A complete story that winds up all the ends very well.
I wish to the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

I really enjoyed this read. Full of great characters, an enjoyable plot and well written.
When Bella Black headhunted she hadn’t even thought about leaving her current job or London. But her marriage is over and maybe this is a good time to move on, what’s the harm in having an interview anyway?
Before she knows it she is moving into a rented cottage in Wiltshire on a new adventure, with a job that pays twice the wages she was on. Before she’s even sat down for her first cup of tea some of the neighbours are knocking on the door making her feel welcome.
But when she starts her new job there are things that make her wonder what goes on in part of the business that she is not allowed to know about until she has passed her three month probation period. But she does wonder where everyone disappears to on her first week when they hold there meetings. Not good with directions Bella finds herself lost in the same building she works in. So decides to take photos of landmarks so she knows which way to go, it’s only then she realises there are security cameras and her taking photos is going to look a little odd.
How does this company know so much about her? When one of her more eccentric neighbours Maggie Thatcher realised where Bella works she warns her, claiming her husband had disappeared from the same building 4 months earlier, is this just the rambling of an eccentric lady who brings knickers as a home welcoming gift, or is there more to it?
Then there’s the good looking Ben and Oscar, can she trust anyone. When she catches Lauren, Ben and James having what looks like a not so friendly chat her senses are more alert. What about the strange man the Librarian who seems to be permanently drunk.
When the head of the company goes missing things really get complicated and Bella is forced to try and work out who to trust and who not to.
A highly entertaining read, I found myself chuckling away at some of the antics that Bella gets into. Perfect for a relaxing evening or afternoon.
I would like to thank the publishers for a copy of this book, for my place on the upcoming blog tour. All thoughts and opinions are my own and no way influenced.

Acts of Kindness by Heather Barnett is an entertaining read. It was not only mystery, but it was also uplifting and amusing! I enjoyed the light-hearted take on a mystery!
I really liked Bella. I felt like she was a well rounded character that led this story very well. She feels like a person I could really relate to. The rest of the characters were great as well. This was a character driven book.

Bella Black wants a new start. Not looking for anything but opportunity for a new job, home and an attractive colleague make this appealing. When she is approached out of the blue by Acorn Consulting, this seems like an opportunity that she can't pass up. One stipulation is that once she completes her probation period she must also work for OAK, the charitable arm of Acorn. With disappearances ties Acorn/OAK and Bella obtaining some information that may point to something being very off, Bella isn’t sure who she can trust anymore. This was a very lighthearted mystery that moves at a somewhat slower pace. It was an easy quick read and I enjoyed the concept behind the charity and some of the quirky characters. I give this 3.5 of 5 stars and thank Rachel’s Random Resources and Heather Barnett for the review copy of this book.

This is a unique take on a read that I haven’t experienced before. Uplifting and kind, yet it wouldn’t be a mystery without the slight undercurrent of something sinister happening!
From the start I liked our main character Bella, thanks to her Tarzan swinging her arms down the tube carriage to help a girl in the grips of a panic attack.
It’s because of this that she starts a new job at Acorn Consulting and the secretive Oak Institute, in a sleepy village away from her hustle and bustle life in London.
“She had continued, throughout her life, to root out the tiny negatives in a field of positives.”
Constantly accompanied by “What Others Might Think of Her” on her shoulder, Bella must make the right choices whilst struggling with her own self esteem, or she just may end up trusting the wrong people.
Her neighbours are kind, and eccentric being Maggie Thatcher, whilst her colleagues seem friendly yet curious. Yet people are going missing.
I loved it! The writing potters along at a nice pace and doesn’t lead you down too many rabbit holes yet I was still guessing at the mystery plot the whole time! An easy and nice read, I’d say well done to the author on her debut novel.
Side note: there’s a character Lauren and her boyfriend James. Life imitates art as they say. I just enjoyed that connection albeit small!

We meet Bella who is trying to get her life on track following her divorce. After receiving an unexpected job offer in the quiet Wiltshire countryside, she decides to accept it and leave London. The job turns out to be something which she could never have expected in her wildest dreams, and Bella finds herself involved in trying to solve a mystery in the secretive OAK Institute!
I have to admit, this book was completely different to what I expected! If you’re looking for a typical loved-up chick-lit read, then close the pages and put the book down! This was so much more! I loved Bella’s character and felt her hesitancy and trepidations in moving out of London and into a new job, new home and new village! Bella’s new job sounds perfect though, and the OAK institute initially seemed like a great place to work! All is not as it seems however with the institute and all who work there, with it holding the key to some very secretive work!
There are some wonderful characters in this book although some you will love to hate! They have however all added their own weight to the storyline! I loved Maggie, not just for her forthright manner and bag of knickers, but for the fact that every time I heard her name I giggled (you’ll understand when you’ve read it!). The author’s descriptive writing of the different characters gave me some wonderful images to go alongside the storyline, and kept me interested in them through to the end.
The storyline is, like I said, completely different to what I expected, but it was such a delightful story. It’s a warm-hearted read, and is packed full of mystery, suspense, friendship, good deeds and plenty of humour to keep you amused throughout! It gets you thinking not just about the mystery of what is going on in the storyline, but also about the purpose of the storyline in general. I loved how the inspiration for the book came about, and thought it was very cleverly written in getting that inspiration across in a wonderful light-hearted way. My first book by this author, but I will definitely be looking out for more. Would recommend!

A light-hearted read - that bit different!
Bella Black, newly divorced, is headhunted for a new job; much to the amazement of her friends, she uproots herself from the city and moves to the countryside. With a lovely new home and a short commute to work, she soon settles in - and the good-looking men don't hurt either. But there's a bit of secrecy at her new place of employment and when people begin to go missing, Bella commits to getting to the bottom of things. What's really going on?
I'm not quite sure what I expected from this one; I don't think the blurb really prepared me. However, as long as you can suspend belief and not expect too serious a read, this is a fun story. Bella is a very likeable character but I was never quite sure who else to trust. Did I work out what was behind it all? Not a chance. In all honesty, I had no idea where things were heading for most of the book. A pleasant, well-written novel, and definitely an author worth looking at again. 4*.

Review
This book started out as one of those books that makes you feel all fluffy and cosy inside. It started with "paying it forward" and acts of kindness which are things I love.
As Bella gets used to her new job role within OAKS she is informed that someone has gone missing and the OAK leader has been kidnapped and that's when the book turns into mystery book and Bella is under pressure to find the missing persons before it's too late.
It is brilliantly written and kept me intrigued throughout. I cant wait to read more by this author.

I really enjoyed this book!
Bella is offered her dream job – great location, great salary and a great bunch of new colleagues. She finds a lovely new cottage to rent in a welcoming village. Everything seems to be going well.
Acorn Consulting seems to good to be true. If she completes her probation period she will get to find more out more about what the company does and attend the restricted meetings.
Bella settles in well. she makes friends, meets the neighbours including the eccentric Maggie Thatcher who gives her knickers as a welcome present and passes her probabtion period. But then things start to take a strnage turn.
Maggie claims that her husband has been kidnapped by Bella’s company and asks her to help find him; Bella finds out what is really going on behind the scenes at O.A.K.; and a team building trip to a mysterious island triggers a serious of strange and increasingly dangerous events.
This book is full of fantastic characters. Bella is sharp and witty but kind and thoughtful – you instantly warm to her and want her new life in Wiltshire to be success. You are rooting for her all the way and hoping that she makes the right decisions as to who to trust. I loved her co-worker Oscar and his mother who are flamboyant and fun and make you laugh out loud. The mystery is intriguing and complex but full of humour and the danger always has an element of comedy to it – it reminded me of some of the Janet Evanovich comedy adventures.
The premise behind this book is so interesting and timely – I won’t spoil it, but it certainly makes you think about how you treat people.

How would you feel if you found out that your movements were being constantly monitored?
What if the organization monitoring your behavior claimed that it was using the data to do good?
Would you be okay with it?
Acts of Kindness is centered around this idea.
I haven’t come across such an idea for a story, although it shouldn’t be surprising in today’s digital-first environment.
Bella Black, our protagonist, finds herself taking on the role of a young (and easily distracted) Miss Marple when she finds things amiss at her new company. Initially, she ignores the red flags and moves with the flow, choosing to take a leap of faith.
However, when she stumbles upon something sinister at a team-building event, she decides she can’t let things slide any more. The action begins and we’re taken on a ride from which we emerge breathless.
Bella’s poor sense of direction and shoulder angel (or devil?) is used to good effect to sprinkle the story with bits of humor. It helps inject a light-heartedness into the story.
I can relate to Bella’s “What Others Might Think of Her” that rears its head every time she tries to take a radical step.
Overall, Acts of Kindness is unique, funny, and provides some food for thought. It’s a good example of a serious topic that’s dealt with in a light-hearted manner without losing sight of the message.

This is a highly intriguing and mysterious book and the blurb is clearly purposefully brief so as not to give anything away, which makes this such a difficult book to review. So I think less is more in this instance to avoid inadvertently releasing any spoilers in my review.
Bella is headhunted at just the right time in her life and she is given a job offer that is too good to refuse. So she packs up her belongings, says goodbye to London and sets up home in a picturesque Wiltshire village. Heather Barnett's amazing sense of humour comes through loud and clear when Bella is welcomed by an unfortunately named neighbour bearing an unusual welcome gift. It never got old as I sniggered and guffawed every time this colourful character appeared.
The plot is excellent with multiple layers of mystery and intrigue over an underlying thought-provoking premise. There is so much secrecy that my mind was whirring at full speed as I tried to work out what was going on but, at risk of going dizzy, I found it was better to just sit back and enjoy the show.
Incredibly thought-provoking and hugely entertaining, Acts of Kindness is a brilliant debut from Heather Barnett. Whatever your preferred genre, it really does have something for everyone; it's mysterious, funny and feel-good.
I received an ARC to read and review for the blog tour; this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

4.25 stars.
I received a copy of this book from one of their giveaways, and I think I personally would have had a better reading experience with a physical book. It is the kind of story you curl up with and for me those are not best enjoyed as eBooks.
The story builds slowly, giving you ample time to fall into the world created by the author. For my impatient American brain maybe a little too much time. It picks up dramatically in the second half after all the footings and foundation have been poured, but by then it wasn't so much the 'same language but not really the same language or culture' details that my brain tripped on as it was that suddenly I was experiencing this world from other characters' POVs where it had been exclusively from Bella's and I found myself feeling a little like Bella trying to navigate a new sprawling campus without photographs of landmarks for a couple chapters. I feel like the resolution of the conflict got drawn out into redundant scenes and could maybe have been wrapped up in just the press conference, which dragged it down from 4.5 to a 4.25 for me, but you may have different thoughts.
All in all I enjoyed the story, the concepts and would love to revisit this tale of best laid plans, good intentions and the road those intentions pave for your detour from your plans.

Acts of Kindness by Heather Barnett - 5 Stars
When newly divorced Bella Black gets offered a brand new start at Acorn Consulting with double the benefits, amazing co-workers and only some oddities Bella takes the leap agreeing to a 3 month probation with the company and moves to a small village in Wiltshire where everyone seems so welcoming and friendly…up until Bella meets Maggie Thatcher an eccentric local - who warns her off of Acorn Consulting and all it's charitable secrets, soon people start disappearing from the institute and everything seems almost too good to be true…
Brilliantly written, an escapable fresh plot that pulled me in and created intense suspense, mystery and a hint of romance
I really enjoyed Bella's character, The U.K terms and putting together the puzzles of Oak Institute I will be searching out more of Heather's books in the future!

Acts of Kindness has vibrant characters and an engaging cosy style of mystery. The chance of a dream job is just what Bella needs, but things are more complex than she thought. Bella undertakes some amateur sleuthing with amusing and sometimes dangerous outcomes.
Eccentric characters and mysterious goings-on make this an amusing escapist read.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher in return for an honest review.

I opened Acts of Kindness expecting a light, quick read - maybe a bit of a romcom. It turns out there's a lot more to it than what a cursory look might suggest. This is a fun, feel-good, easy-reading novel (and a great debut), and the story has quite a few twists and turns - it's more of a rural action/comedy thriller. Definitely glad I picked it up, and great to support new authors and indie publishers too!

A very unusual story that combines mystery with comedy, drama and romance making it a very entertaining read for those with varying tastes.
I found it truly enjoyable and couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read more from author Heather Barnett!

Acts of Kindness is endlessly surprising, combining elements of cosy mystery with adventure, comedy and romance. Although in places it is reminiscent of Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, it's really quite like nothing else, gleefully crossing multiple genre boundaries. Unique!

DNF. I stopped at 30%. I didn't really like the concept of people being paid to be kind. And I found the storytelling disjointed.... perhaps a lack of concentration on my part, perhaps a lapse in editing. This one wasn't for me.

I won this in a goodreads giveaway. What a fun, unique concept and a cozy, interesting execution! I loved the characters, the ideas, and the ending. Perfect if you’re in the mood for something light and different.
