This companion volume to the PBS series airing in July and August gives the stirring history of the suffragette movement in Britain--the group of women that rocked the foundations of British society as they waged a blazing campaign advocating the right of women to vote. Honors the 70th anniversary of women's suffrage. Photos.
LJ user tabari says, "It's an original-source only (that is to say, it's all letters, diary entries, or newspaper articles) about the Militant Suffragettes in Britain during the early twentieth century. It focuses on the Pankhurst family but has a somewhat broader view.
It's an old-fashioned, second-wave style book, but since it's all original sources and not commentary, that's its strength - it highlights exactly how radical the suffrage movement in Britain was. Did you know that suffragettes firebombed the Prime Minister's (empty, admittedly) house? That one woman took a horsewhip to Winston Churchill? That they rioted through downtown London, destroying thousands of shop windows? That British suffragettes helped to pioneer the hunger strike?"
Highly, highly recommended book that tells the story of the women's suffrage movement, by weaving together lots of different biographies and newspaper accounts. Fascinating. It's a thrilling story anyway, but told first-hand by so many that were there at the time, this is an absolutely wonderful way to understand what happened, put together in a continuous linear thread. Why on earth is this book out of print?!
A beautiful collection of photographs and quotations from the women of the WSPU, highlighting pivotal moments such as Women’s Sunday and Black Friday, as well as the daily acts of courage taken by suffragettes of all social classes.
