Luke Walker left home when he was 17-years old to join the Army and never looked back. He was an angry teen following the death of his parents, leaving his three brothers and baby sister behind. It’s been over twenty years and now the Special Forces soldier has left the military, returning home to Norfolk, Virginia to see if he can make amends with his family. He’s attending his younger brother’s wedding when he sees Ava Bennett sitting alone. She’s a UN interpreter from New York, home to help out with her father following his knee surgery. She’s blind and one of his sister Hannah’s clients at her horse therapy farm for disabled children. Though she can’t see him, Ava is immediately as drawn to him as he is to her. Luke’s never been in a committed relationship but she’s struggling to overcome the breakup of her one and only.

Let me first admit how much I love this series. It’s a sprawling family between the Walkers and McKinneys (Hannah’s married to a McKinney forming the bridge between the two). Luke is one of the brothers who’s the least known so I’ve always been intrigued by him. Though he’s quiet and not very good at sharing his feelings, Ava brings out the best in him. It was lovely seeing his transformation, which extended into Luke developing bonds with his own siblings. She, on the other hand, struggled with fully committing herself to the relationship given her baggage from her last experience.

This was a lovely story, made even more interesting because of Ava’s disability. I learned a lot about how the blind can operate so independently as it was obviously well researched. There was so much to admire about her and her fierce determination to be self sufficient, which she was. It made for a beautiful love story as Luke fell for the woman and not her external beauty. And, through him, we got to see the world through hers, too. Lastly, reconnecting with all the siblings and their growing families was the perfect bow to tie around this story.

After twenty long years away, Luke Walker is home for his brother Zach's wedding hoping to make amends and reconnect with the siblings he walked away from at age seventeen. Luke's at loose ends, a bit lost after his sudden decision to leave military life not knowing what his future holds. And then he meets UN interpreter Ava Bennet who's home for a few weeks to help her mother care for her father during his rehabilitation. Ava's been blind since birth and without the familiarity of her New York City surroundings and public transportation, she's dependent on others which she hates. Both Luke and Ava carry secrets and regrets - each choosing to remain alone rather than risk disappointment and hurt again. When the two share a dance at Zach's wedding, the connection and chemistry are immediate and intense. Waiting On The Rain is their story - tender, intimate, loving. But Happily Ever After? Highly unlikely.

Claudia Connor's skill at weaving intimate, heartwarming love stories is evident in Waiting On The Rain. She excels at drawing readers' into the midst of large families - the gatherings, meals, rivalry between siblings, support system - where they quickly become entangled and hopelessly in love with the characters. I was immediately drawn to Luke - his fears, anxiety, regrets and the same with Ava with her own self-doubts and ghosts. I love that the author showcases Ava's strengths - her independence and ability to adapt in unknown situations as well as Luke's easy acceptance of her unique challenges.

Waiting On The Rain is a beautiful story of two different people with two separate lives learning to trust each other against all odds as they fall in love when there's every reason in the world why it won't work. The relaxing quiet small town and open country setting is conducive to a transformation in both characters as they explore their feelings and question what they thought they wanted in a future even as they learn to put the past at rest. Can a city girl and a country boy make it work? Both have their doubts and fears to overcome. And yet . . . the chemistry and desire sparking between them is off the charts as are the bedroom scenes. Rest assured, Connor has no issue including steamy lovemaking into her happily ever after stories.

Waiting On The Rain is low angst romance at its best. It's a touching, intimate and beautiful story of two people learning to let go of the past while finding the trust to build a future together. I read this book in one sitting as I just couldn't put it down once I met these characters and became engrossed in their lives. I highly recommend it to fans of romance as well as those who just enjoy a good, heartwarming story.

*Many thanks to Author Claudia Connor for an arc of this book.

-ˏˋ My Overall Thoughts ˎˊ-

This review is going to be brief. The romance was sweet, the characters were (mostly) likable, and overall I had a good time. BUT, this book really should've been called, WAITING ON AVA TO GET A GUIDE DOG. Seriously, SOMEONE, anyone, needed to get this woman a pamphlet on guide dogs ASAP.

*big sigh*

Also, I was waiting, w a i t 👏 i n g, for the scene where Ava finally blew up at everyone for treating her with kid gloves (then again maybe i skimmed that scene, it is a possibility). I was extremely befuddled with everyone's treatment towards her. It's not like she suddenly lost her sight a year prior to this book, no, she was born without sight. Not only that, but she lived in New York City BY HERSELF for 10+ years, had excellent mobility skills, and was *checks book* THIRTY-GOD-DAMN-YEARS-OLD. Due to that, I know SHE CAN HANDLE HERSELF COMPETENTLY, so BACK OFF Luke & Co. If she needs help she'll ask for help, PERIOD.

I - I just -

*takes deep breath*

In summary, Ava has the patience of a saint, and someone needs to give this woman a god damn medal for dealing with all the BS surrounding her. As someone who is somewhat knowledgable about guide dogs this book grated just a touch. seriously i just wanted the guide dog conversation brought up ONCE, one time . Other than that I had a good time. So, if you guys are in the mood to exercise your KU subscription then maybe check this one out.

Luke Walker has been away for years serving in the Military and intentionally staying away from his hometown. Twenty years have gone by and he has returned home for his younger brother Zach’s wedding. While he is home he plans to help out his sister Hannah with setting up her riding camp. What he was not expecting was to meet Ava.

Ava Bennet has recently been divorced and is temporarily staying with her parents for a few months. She has become great friends with Hannah and made connections with quite a few people in town. When she meets Luke at his brother’s wedding she is pleasantly surprised. She never imagined she would be asked to dance but somehow she finds herself up on the dancefloor with him.

Luke is surprised to find out that Ava is blind, at first glance he would never have guessed that. This only makes her more intriguing to him. He enjoys talking to her and after just a few hours of getting to know her, he wants to know more. He feels inexplicably drawn to her for reasons he hasn’t figured out yet.

“Do you think it’s going to rain?’ “I don’t know.” “That’s what I’m waiting on. It’s been a really long time since it rained.”

Ava is beautiful, confident and independent. She may not have her eyesight but all of her other senses are on high alert when she is around Luke. Ava’s sense of smell and hearing help her make sense of what is going on around her. Luke has a renewed appreciation of all of the senses that he had taken for granted until now. Luke is very thoughtful with Ava. He enjoys giving her new experiences and when things move from friendship into something more he makes her feel beautiful and desired. Being with Luke is more than Ava could have imagined and he feels the same way too.

“He hadn’t known, really known, what he’d been looking for when he came here. Peace maybe. Resolution with the family. But looking at Ava sleeping beside him he knew whatever it was he’d been looking for, he’d found it in her. And more than anything, he wanted to be the man she needed.”

Ava is beginning to rethink her future plans but when something out of her control happens she doubts whether or not being with Luke is the right choice. Is it fair to burden him with the worry that he might not be able to count on her when it matters? Her time with Luke has been incredible but maybe it’s time to get back to her life in New York and let him move on with his.

Luke may have the gift of sight but he seems to be blinded by his own stubbornness and pride. If he wants to win the girl he is going to have to up his game or face losing her forever.

There is not a single story that Claudia has written that I haven’t loved and this story was no exception.

Ava moves back to town partially to help her dad and to escape her life a bit after betrayal by her ex husband. She was born blind and has managed to carve a good life for herself in the city, her formerly blind husband deciding he didn't want to be with her anymore however caused some hurt. Meeting Luke, the last thing she wants is another relationship.
Luke has been an Army Ranger for 20 years and has only recently returned home. He spends his days helping his sister get her camp together and attending counselling meetings. Meeting Ava changes his life in ways he never saw coming

********
I really enjoyed this one, Ava was a really fantastic and strong h, I teared up quite a few times at her struggles and the way things played off with her ex
Luke too was a good H, he's trying his best to find his place back into not only civilian life but also his family's life after years away
I will say some things I'm not a fan of that this author seems to do in ALL her books is in the initial stages where the h/H would interact and then nothing for a few days....over and over again. It's annoying and stalls the book too much. Also the separation at 90% that she absolutely seems to believe is required is just predictable and irritating.
This book wasn't perfect but I definitely enjoyed it much more than the previous books in this series

H wasn't a manwhore
h has been divorced I believe for a year, we get a bit of her backstory with her ex and a few mentions of him to give a better understanding of what took place. He appears but not to get her back

Waiting On The Rain was such a beautiful and emotional read.

Luke, a retired Army Ranger, came back home to reconnect with his brothers and sister but adapting to the civilian life isn't easy. Ava, an interpreter to the United Nations in New York, is back at home for a while to help his father with the post-operative exercises. Their lives intersect at Luke's little brother's wedding. They seem to be the only two people who stay away from the party, so when the beautiful woman approaches the biscuits table he goes to her to strike a conversation and he finds out she is also funny, witty other than beautiful. Luke and Ava feels immediately comfortable with each other, they have a great chemistry together but they are reluctant to act on their attraction because they come from different worlds and they bring a lot of personal baggage. Will they overcome their past trouble in order to enjoy their relationship?

I've loved to follow Luke and Ava journey, and I've particularly appreciated how the grumpy ranger never made the blind woman feel less capable. Their relationship is unique and sweet and I couldn't not wish them the best for their lives.

Once again Claudia Connor's writing made me deeply feel involved into the story of these characters, her words are never prosaic, they always bring a deep meaning without ruining the story flow.

I hope to read next book in the series soon.

Oh.
My.
Goodness.

This was SO. GOOD.

So beautifully written, I was swept away in Luke and Ava’s story. Full of so many emotions! Sometimes so breathtaking, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from my kindle. Sometimes so intense, I gripped it a bit tighter.

It also had plenty of humor that kept me smiling big. The banter was cute and fun and made the story even more enjoyable.

Ava is quite the heroine. Being blind doesn’t hold her back. She’s brave and strong and independent and sassy and I adored everything about her. Her ex-husband did a number on her, so she has put up some pretty strong walls to protect herself from getting crushed again.

Enter Luke. <—-just the name alone is sexy. Retired from being an Army Ranger for 20 years, he doesn’t quite know what to do with himself as a civilian. He feels everyone is looking at him and talking about him and worrying about him. He doesn’t want that.

He first sees Ava at his brother’s wedding reception. His eyes always seemed to drift her way. He finally decides to approach her. Their meet-cute was so adorably sweet! Their chemistry was instant, their connection strong.

I loved these two together so much!!
They made my heart happy.

Luke and Ava are absolutely perfect for each other. The way they understood each other was a beautiful thing. How they just knew what the other one needed was so heartwarming. He is so patient and kind and doesn’t make her feel helpless. She calms him, completes him, makes him feel whole again.

The author easily shows the struggles Ava lives with daily. And then just as easily, she shows what a total badass she really is. Her strength and determination were admirable and made me love her all the more.

I couldn’t love this story any more if I tried. It grabbed ahold of me from the beginning and didn’t let go until the very last page. Luke & Ava stole my heart.

Waiting on the Rain is the third book in The Walker Brothers series but can be read as a standalone. I read this one first and will definitely be going back to read books 1 & 2!

Sweet story.
The couple are cute together.
At the start the Hero is at a wedding.
'He’d been firm on not bringing a date and gave points to his sister the wedding planner. She hadn’t pushed. Instead she’d paired him up with one of the bride’s coworkers who was old enough to be his grandmother. '

' There’d been a time when his hormones had raged and the thought of bridesmaids would have made him think good time. Now there was nothing raging. His blood didn’t run hot or cold. Sometimes Luke wondered if it was running at all.'

He meets the heroine there not realising she's blind at first.

The heroine.
' He made her smile. Surprising given the way she’d felt about men the past year.'
'
“Because getting married is the last thing I would ever do. And if I want flowers, I’ll buy my own.”'
Having your husband wake up one day and say he didn’t want to be married to you anymore would do that.

The Hero It’d been so long since he’d had even the most casual relationship. Really, it had been a long time since he’d had anything at all with a woman.

There were a few editing errors.
I am quoting from Amazon Kindle
' "Okay if you're sure"
"I am.  When she was alone again" she asked her phone for the time...'

So the "" are in the wrong place which isn't a huge error but does mean as a reader you double check what you've read.
This happens a few times.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
Very small other woman drama, another woman flirts with him at his place of work but he isn't interested, she later implies they were going to go on a date in front of the heroine.
Other man drama in form of ex husband who is not interested in getting back together but is mentioned from time to time.

HEA.
Breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I absolutely LOVED writing this book and it may just be my absolute favorite. Ava is so strong, so accomplished and independent. And she's everything Luke needs. I don't want to say more because I don't want to give anything away, but I think you'll fall in love with Luke and Ava and there will be plenty of sighing as you follow their journey to happily ever after. <3 You'll also get to visit with the other Walkers and as Hannah is married to Stephen McKinney, there will be some McKinney sightings as well!!

xoxo

Enjoy and happy reading!!

I am a sucker for unique characters in romance.

I am also a sucker for a powerhouse leading lady and Claudia Connor delivers both in Waiting on the Rain.

I can't say enough about Ava! Yes, she's blind. But she is far from helpless. And when Luke Walker saunters into her life thinking he could swoop in and be her hero? Ha! She proves him wrong.

The chemistry between these two is off the charts. The playful banter is hilarious. Their romance is explosive.

In true Claudia Connor form, not all remains picture perfect and the emotional bitch slap is as understandable as it is heartbreaking.

Heart-pounding, laugh out loud, and gut-wrenching. You do not want to miss out on this read!

This was such an emotional book to me and Luke was the perfect hero to Ava. Ms Connor had me wanting to beat down Blake, bear hug Luke, and make Ava my hero! Yes, she had second thoughts and doubted herself, but she never gave up on herself.

Being blind has never stopped Ava Bennet and moving away from her small town to the big city has only bolstered her confidence. However, she’s back to her small home town to help her father after an injury. But, being under the roof of her well meaning but over protection family is…difficult and she longs to get back to her life. Even if that means leaving behind the man she can’t stop thinking about. Luke Walker has spent all his adult life in the military, but now he’s back home and trying to make up all the time he has lost with his family and acclimatise to civilian life. Then he meets Ava, he knows he has a limited amount of time to persuade her that jus one month together will never be enough…they deserve a lifetime.

I’m a woman with a big sweet tooth. In my world, there is no such thing as too much chocolate and my dream in life is to unashamedly order every item off the dessert menu and chase it with a milkshake. This is probably why I enjoy a Claudia Connor book so much, they are so darn sweet! For some people, maybe a little too sweet. But, like I said, I have a sweet tooth so I was munching through this book with glee.

It’s not often you see a completely blind heroine so it was great to see this represented in this book. And, it really made me think about how scary living life could be if you can’t see anything. How human languages are informed by our sight, and as Ava has been blind since birth, things like colours have no context. And, although I am very much venturing into the patronising zone, I couldn’t help but admire Ava’s will and gumption. She let nothing hold her back. As for Luke, our wounded hero, he’s a man trying to find his place in civilian life but is struggling to fit.

The story between Luke and Ava was really lovely, they are both struggling with their own demons and don’t really ever expect to find love. This was a low conflict book, where the focus was on the emotional journey that Ava and Luke go through as they both evaluate their lives and gradually learn to trust one another. The small town setting gives them space to do that. And, if you re a fan, like me, of Connor’s books we also get to see a lot of the McKinney and Walker gang from previous books.

If you like your romances sweet, slightly angsty and with no external conflict then this is the book for you. Personally, I was in the perfect mood to read this and really enjoyed it and can’t wait for more from Claudia Connor.

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author in exchange for an fair and honest review.

There are so many things I love about the books Claudia Connor writes. Great, memorable characters who are not at all what you would expect; family - so few romances involve any kind of strong family connection; plots that you just won't find by any other romance writer. Waiting on the rain is all that and so much more.

Ava Bennet is home in the Norfolk, VA area helping with her dad's rehabilitation after knee surgery. Being blind she misses her life in New York City and the freedom she has there. She misses her job and her best friend too. There is very little she likes about her small hometown, especially when her mother and brother try to stifle her independence and it is next to impossible to get around on her own.

The black sheep of the Walker family has come home to stay. Luke ran away from his family after the death of his parents and joined to military at 17. Now at 41, it's the only life and family he really knows. He wants to get to know this family he left and trying to figure out civilian life is difficult.

Luke Walker is done running from his troubled past. Finally home after years in the military, he’s ready to make amends with his family and set down some roots. But adapting to civilian life is much harder than he ever expected.

Ava has decided that love is not for her after being left by her husband and Luke wonders if he can ever be whole again after what he has seen and done in the military. Ava and Luke both find a special something in each other, but for that to be enough, each has to be willing to trust the other.

Ava was born blind, and there is nothing that doctors can do to correct it. This does not stop her from living her best life with some bumps along the way. She comes home to help her mom and dad and meets Luke. Luke is just recently out of the Army. He's unsure of what to do with his life. I really like his therapist. Luke and Ave meet, he falls in love, and she just says she wants to go back to NY or maybe on to Italy. Lots of angst, an adventure or two, kittens, along with lots of help from his extended family. Nice epilogue...and what Dallas is home. Where has he been?

Luke Walker has been in the military since he was seventeen years old. He took off to escape home and has not been back much in twenty years. But now he is retired and home for Zach's wedding, and to regroup and get to know his family again. He has always felt like he was on the outside. He is the more quiet, loner type and the distance kept him even more isolated from them. He has seen a lot and been through some difficult things and has to work through it and figure out his future. He is helping his sister Hannah with building a cabin and accessories for her special needs camp and finding some fulfillment in the work.

Ava Bennet is a hometown girl who now lives in New York City and works as an interpreter at the UN. She is beautiful, sweet, sassy, and blind since birth. But she is also adaptable, intelligent, and fiercely independent, and brave. She loves to try new things and challenge herself. And she is currently taking riding lessons at the camp.

One look at a wedding got Luke's attention and her personality pulled him in. The more time they spend together, the more complicated it gets. They both have some personal issues that have put them on guard with relationships. Ava especially has some insecurities and fears about being rejected. And she thinks her life is more independent in the city, while Luke is starting to think that maybe staying home is the right place for him. Throw in some nosy families and a few dramatic events and it just gets more challenging.

This is a sweet, passionate, and beautiful story about trust, acceptance, and unconditional love. I felt like the author did a wonderful job describing the challenges and adaptions for differently-abled people. Even though Ava did not have true sight, she could see to the heart and soul of Luke like no other. She was also determined not to be held back because of it. And although Luke was protective at times, he also understood Ava's need to be independent and not coddled. He was such an intense and swoony hero, and I loved them together.

They never expected to find each other or get attached, but they could not stop it even when they tried. But are they brave enough to take a shot in the dark and see if they can find the light in the future together?

I have missed being in this world. It brings back the Walker brothers and their spouses, and some of the McKinneys too so we get to see how everyone is doing. I am excited for Dallas' story next as he has been undercover and gone for a long time too.

This one was good, I liked that it has a quiet tone to it. I feel like both Ava and Luke were a bit lost. Luke from his job and Ava figuring out her life after a divorce it seems. I liked how Luke really listened to Ava and what it was like for her being blind, how he would incorporate things she talked about into Hannah's camp and how he never felt sorry for her not being able to see, just wanted to understand it more.

Towards the end things were a bit harrowing for them when an accident happened and both panicked. Worse was how this tore them apart, but it was good that both of them had friends and family that helped them think on things. That when the chance to speak again happened, they both lunged for it and their future.

This is the third book in the Walker/McKinney series, and is the story of Luke Walker. It’s a really sweet, emotional and heartfelt romance with strong individual stories for Luke and his amazing heroine, and I really enjoyed this one.

Luke has returned to his small home town after retiring from the Army Rangers. He was in the Army for over 20 years and is struggling to figure out who he is and what he wants now that his military career is over, and is filling his time by helping out his younger sister, Hannah, on her horse therapy farm.

Ava has travelled from New York City back to her home town to care for her father. Ava is blind, and while she manages well in the big city, she is having difficulty navigating a smaller, mostly unfamiliar town. The one thing she looks forward to are her horse riding lessons on Hannah’s farm.

Luke and Ava meet at his brother’s wedding. They hit it off, and when they run into each other again on the farm, it seems like fate. They slowly get to know each other, and the attraction that has simmered between them since their first meeting only grows as they open up to each other, and their friendship soon turns romantic.

“I wish I could see you,” she whispered into the dark. “Not to see what you look like, but I wish I could see your eyes looking at me.”
“You see me, Ava. Maybe more than anyone else ever has.”

I love these two together. Their banter is great, and they open up to each other beautifully, and their relationship is a great mix of humor and playfulness, sweet and tender moments, and chemistry-filled passion.

I love the way Luke looks at Ava – not defining her by her disability, but instead marvelling at her resilience and intelligence and falling for her completely. Ava has been hurt badly by a man who was supposed to love her, and she is understandably wary, and she’s only in town temporarily as she’s determined to return to the city life that she loves so much, so she’s not keen to dive into something serious. But the pull between them is undeniable, and they both find themselves falling hard, despite the difficulties in their being together.

“If I knew I could have something real, something really real, with you, of course it would be worth the risk, worth anything. But how would I ever know that?”
“I don’t know, Ava. How do you ever really know?”

The story is just as much Luke and Ava overcoming their individual struggles as it is about the romance. They are dealing with very different issues, but they wholly support and encourage each other, all while coming to accept their feelings and figuring out what they want, and I thought their stories were beautifully told.

“You made me want to look at the future. And now I only want to look if that future includes you. I have my sight. You don’t. My eyes are wide open on that one and I’m sitting here, choosing you. Choosing us.”

Luke’s siblings are a big part of the story, and if you haven’t read the earlier books, it may be a bit overwhelming to sort out who is who, and how all of the kids fit into the picture, but you could read this as a standalone – just acknowledging that there are a heap of relatives. As someone who has read the previous books, I loved seeing all of those characters again, and I really enjoyed seeing Luke find his way back to his family after being away for so long.

This is a really enjoyable read. I loved Luke and Ava – their individual stories, and their beautiful romance – and I’m really looking forward to (hopefully) getting a book for Dallas, the last of the Walker siblings.

Really sweet - 3.5 stars.

One of the things I've always liked about a book by Claudia Connor is her characters. She writes very flawed wonderful characters that you want to know more about. She understands that people aren't perfect and have issues, that a smile sometimes hides heartache.

I think that's why I like her characters. I want them real and alive feeling. With this family, you really get that. I really love the Walker family. There is a deep issue with this family that started with their parents and then went on with their sister.

Right away you get an inkling of what's going on with Luke. Just not the full scope of it. As the book goes on you learn more and more. I found as the book goes on you learn a bit more about the family and all the hurt and blame that went on when they were kids. This poor family. I'm loving how they are coming together with each book.

I love it when an author makes her characters real and believable. Ava is one of those characters. I know it might be weird for me to get so excited about a character who can't see but I have to admit I love when authors make their people real.

Ava is one tough cookie. She is very independent and knows how to take care of herself. She's very likable. You want her as a friend. I will say that at times her mother made me cringe. But I understood what it's like to be a parent. Now if I had my way I would have kicked her ex's ass. He is just a prick.

These two at times are silly in their thinking but I liked them together. They work. He's great with her and because he makes her feel safe she can be herself with him. Yes, they have issues that they need to work out but they do. It's a perfect romance story. I really enjoyed it.

Claudia has once again packed a punch with Waiting on the Rain. Ava is a extraordinary heroine. She may have been born without sight but she has never let that stop her. She has made her way in the world as an interpreter and she is very successful. She has lived, loved and had her share of sorrow. For now she is now back in her home town to help care for her father. A family/friend wedding and she is now in the sights of Luke Walker.
Luke Walker is a retired military man that man be reconsidering his choice. He is still adjusting to civilian life and is in no way lookin for a relationship. That is until a damsel is distress at the cookie table catches his eye. He may have pegged the lovely Ava wrong and is about to find out she is one of the strongest women that he has ever met and possibly the most stubborn too. They soon find themselves falling into a pattern but he knows she is just visiting her family and she is aware he is not the relationship type. When Ava finally decides to leave this little town can Luke find his courage to make her stay or has their time together run it's course.
This couple is real and have faults and that only makes you love them even more. It was a beautiful emotional journey with Ava and Luke.

A beautifully romantic story about a brave, blind woman who had been betrayed by her ex husband. Luke Walker is home after years in the military, trying to re-connect with all the family and friends he had left behind.
Helping out his sister with her plans to open a farm and horse riding facilities for disabled children, he runs into a beautiful woman.
Despite all the obstacles in their way they form a bond and fall in love. But a dangerous accident shows how her blindness can be dangerous for those she loves.

Love these characters, all the McKinney’s and Walkers, and I have a feeling Dallas Walker’s story is next.

I really struggled here. I unfortunately had a difficult time staying engaged. Great premise. Long-winded execution. Lots of skimming. I'm guessing it was me Big Joe. Appreciated the rec my friend.

Ava Bennett may be blind, but she hasn’t let that stop her from living her life on her terms. Leaving her small town behind for life in the big city, she learned how to get around and keep busy amid the bustling streets and chaos of city life. When her father needs help back home though, she takes some time off work to be there to help out, forgetting just how different small town life is when you can’t see.

Luke Walker is home after spending years in the military. He left home in a rush and spent as little time back during the intervening years. He feels a little adrift now though, not sure where he wants to settle permanently, nor what he wants to do with his life after service, but he knows he wants to make things better between him and his family. He keeps busy helping Hannah with construction on her camp, anything to be able to work hard enough to fill his time and catch what little sleep he can at night.

They never expected to start something - she doesn’t intend to stay, and he isn’t interested in leaving again so soon. But the more time they spend together the more they see each other. I loved watching them form a bond. Ava is still hurt from her previous marriage and didn’t figure on finding anyone new - one broken heart was enough for her. Luke was still finding his footing in civilian life, feeling like he family didn’t quite get him. Though she didn’t have vision, she saw him more clearly than many had in his recent memory.

This was a sweet, swoony story of forgiveness, new beginnings, and overcoming challenges. I loved how Ava found a place at Hannah’s and how her experiences helped Hannah to make her camp experience even better for the children she planned on serving. I loved watching Luke’s return to his family as he opened up for the first time since childhood.

Returning to the world of the Walkers and the McKinney’s was a great journey. I love this extended family and seeing where the established couples (pretty much the rest of the siblings) are now was fun. It has been a while since the last book was released, but returning to the world was smooth and easy. I look forward to another installment with Dallas’s return from undercover work!
