The Corner Lounge bar owner, Judy Dillane, is embroiled in another mystery. She and her friend and landlord, Sully, finds a man's body in the dumpster out back, with a knife still stuck in his heart.

Cops are called, the FBI steps in when it's revealed that this wasn't the first murder by this particular killer. Every New Year's Eve for the last few years, there has been a killing .. with tall, blond men found with knives stuck in their heart.

Jude decides she needs to investigate .. this latest victim was the brother of one her regular clientele. One of her regulars, known as the 10th Street Irregulars, is suspect. One by one she looks into them, much to the consternation of her boyfriend, Eric, an FBI Agent from the Behavioral Science Unit, and the local cops who don't seem to know what to do.

It becomes very personal when Jude begins receiving notes from the killer warning her off. And then one of her bartenders, also a friend, disappears and the killer lets Jude knows it's her fault for his listening to his previous warnings.

It's an intricate plot with great character development. Jude is smart, sassy, and stubborn,,but she really has a good heart and wants this killer stopped. Her boyfriend is not happy with her and she's keeping things from him so he won't worry. But her friends always seem to rat her out. The secondary characters keep the action moving moving at a swift pace ... and not everyone is who they say they are. Although 2nd in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone, but I do recommend reading in order. The ending was a surprise...and there's a bit of a cliff hanger. I can hardly wait to see what Jude gets involved in next.

I was so excited to dive back into the world of Jude Dillane and The Corner Lounge. The second book in the "A Murder on the Rocks Mystery" series did not disappoint and is even faster-paced than the first in my opinion. We are reintroduced to Jude post-New Year's Eve, after a night of serving drinks to celebrating patrons when she finds the dead body of one of those patrons in the dumpster outside. It turns out this murder is similar to previous NYE murders throughout the years and is the work of a serial killer aptly named the New Year's Eve Serial Killer. Jude unwittingly gets swept up into the investigation because it was her chef's knife that was used as the weapon and the killer keeps sending her threatening messages that assume she saw something.

I was frustrated with Jude and some of the reckless situations she put herself into, but it's not her fault that someone was targeting her. One thing that nagged me was how easy it was to shake the FBI security detail. I imagined that he would have been out of sight, out of mind but still keeping an eye out.

What I love about these novels is the setting-- the explanations of the food and drinks, the descriptions of the customers, and the New York scene are so fun. You also have characters like Jude, Sully, and Eric who are real-- they are frustrating, headstrong, compassionate, and lovable. I can't wait to read more of the series!

In contrast to most mysteries featuring amateur sleuths set in small towns with pastry chefs, knitters, and other assorted part time investigators, Stoler sets her story on New York's lower east side. Jude owns a restaurant and bar, in partnership with her good friend Pete who manages the kitchen.

The morning after a busy New Year's eve in the bar, Jude and her landlord Sully find a body in the dumpster behind the kitchen, with a knife protruding from his chest.

Stoler’s cast of characters includes the stereotypical bumbling set of cops, an FBI agent from the Behavioral Science Unit, Jude’s friend and landlord, her steady boyfriend, and a group of regular patrons at the bar Jude calls the "10th street irregulars."

Jude is startled to realize that the dead man is the brother of one of the irregulars. Cops show up, media descends and everyone begins to suspect someone on the staff of the restaurant when the murder weapon is revealed to be missing from a set in Pete's kitchen.

Against all her common sense as well as the advice of her friends and law enforcement, Jude begins to follow details, hoping to learn who killed the man in the dumpster. Readers of Stoler's first book in the series will recall that Jude conducted a similar amateur investigation in another earlier crime.

The setting of Last Call makes it stand out from other mysteries described as "cozy" but there are nevertheless several similarities. Each time Jude chooses clothing for the day, or for a trip to a yoga studio or a detecting jaunt, we learn what she is wearing. She responds to all sensible suggestions from the FBI and from her friends with a sort of "yes, but" reaction and silently resolves to keep investigating. Even a series of threats against her, a physical attack that could have killed her, and the kidnapping of one of her employees do not deter her.

Readers who enjoy the cozy genre and are looking for a different setting will enjoy this book.

Jude Dillane is the owner of an up and coming bar/restaurant called The Corner Lounge. She has a great chef capable of creating fabulous dishes, a well known and well stocked bar and a growing clientele appreciative of her efforts. On New Years Day as Jude is cleaning up the last of the glitter and party favors, she discovers a body in the dumpster out in the alley. She recognizes the young man right away as the brother of one of her 10th Street Irregulars, a group of guys that frequent the bar. Curiosity gets the better of her and despite the warnings of her live in boyfriend Eric, and “Sully” Sullivan the owner of the building to let the cops and the FBI handle the case she starts snooping through years of evidence and archives and finds a growing list of similar murders in the same area and killed in the same manner. Jude just can’t walk away and the more she searches for answers as to the identity of the killer the more it seems she is putting herself in the cross hairs as one of his future victims. And the more evidence she uncovers, the more she is certain this killer is very close to home.

Good story, good series.

Set in Cosmopolitan Manhattan, Last Call is the second in the Murder on the Rocks series following the adventures of bar owner and amateur sleuth Jude Dillane, her gruff ex-Marine landlord Sully, her boyfriend Eric, her staff and a selection of patrons she calls the “10th Street Irregulars” (a nod to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.). When the brother of one of her Irregulars is offed on New Year’s Eve, possibly the latest in a series of year-end killings, Jude gins things up by poking around, despite the admonitions of the FBI investigator assigned to the case. Her interference fails to scotch the killer’s efforts but rather, earns her several death threats and close calls. With a surprise ending sure to get readers snatching up the next in the series, Last Call is good, Old-Fashioned entertainment! Many thanks to the author and Level Best Books for the ARC. I love books that start with a preface and drag me down the “rabbit hole”. This one starts in 1999 and whets your interest. It then drops you off in “the Corner Lounge” watching the ball drop on TV from Times Square to welcome in the New Year. In the next few, hours we are ensnared in a murder that has many suspects but not a lot of clues.
The protagonist once again is Jude Dillane the owner of the Lounge and appropriately named for the “Saint of lost causes”. It is fun watching a female follow the clues in a feminine way. Of course, her male friends think she should step back and let the “experts “solve the case. And (equally of course) Jude does it her way.
I did not figure out who did it until the end. I did go back and review what I read to find the clues that should have alerted me. I think the author “played fair” in this regard.
This is the second book I have read by Cathi Stoler. I was not disappointed.

This installment of Stoler’s Murder on the Rocks series is a welcome escape from these Covid days. As a New Yorker who has been cooped up for nearly eight months now, I welcomed the detail of City landmarks and neighborhoods: oh to be in The Lounge among Jude’s regulars! When the popular bar becomes a crime scene, colorful characters swirl in and out of the Tenth Street watering hole and simultaneously dull and sharpen Jude’s attention to detail. Along the way, Last Call highlights one of the novel’s great messages: that we all tend to deny truths we don’t want to accept, even when that truth is right under our nose. This is something I always appreciate in a mystery. Last Call is worth a read. Come for the escape into a New York not currently at our disposal, but stay for the crisp plotting and memorable characters.

5 stars! The fabulous Jude Dillane is back in Cathi Stoler's latest blockbuster STRAIGHT UP: A Murder on the Rocks Mystery. Still reeling from her brush with the New Year's Eve serial killer and a recent breakup, Dillane receives a note from Art Bevins. It is clear the killer is back and has been watching her. Dillane once again finds herself in peril, stalked by a man capable of anything. When a beautiful, but mysterious woman and her assistant move into the apartment above hers, Dillane's hackles rise and she knows not everything is as it seems.

Fast-paced and deftly written, Stoler grabs the reader's attention from the very first chapter and never lets go. She has woven a tale of intrigue and mystery that is sure to please. Twists and turns abound in a story you simply cannot put down. A great read!

Cathi Stoler’s Last Call opens with a bang, on New Year’s Eve, and in this clever, twisty mystery the fireworks don’t quit until the very last page. Fans of the award-winning author’s first novel in this series, Bar None, are in for another suspenseful read.

Jude Dillane is back, along with the other quirky and appealing characters from the first novel, and once again she becomes embroiled in a murder investigation. This time, it’s a serial killer who’s the loose, and you have to look long and hard—and probably reread it more than once—to catch all the clues that are so cleverly embedded in the plot. There are plenty of red herrings to go along with those hints to the identity of the murderer, but you’ll be guessing until the very suspenseful end.

Jude and Sully do a great job of running The Lounge until there’s a murder in the alley by the dumpster. Cathi Stoler makes sure you want to fasten your seatbelt when you go on a ride through one of her books. I’d love to visit this bar and be one of the regulars. However, the bar fades to the background as Jude tries to understand why the brother of one of the Irregulars is murdered. Reading a book by Cathi means you’re always going to get a page turner. I love it when amateur detectives get involved because I get to imagine myself helping to solve a crime. Plan to miss bedtime when you’re reading because you’ll have to know what happens next before you go to sleep...if you can after reading Last Call.

Last Call is the second book in the Murder on the Rocks series by Cathi Stoler. Like the first book, Bar None, this book is a little bit cozy and a lot mystery. The crimes are serious, but they are discussed without gory details. The plot is somewhat cozier than the other aspects of the book in that the main character’s curiosity is insatiable. Jude gets into dangerous situations with no sense of how foolhardy she is being although everyone, even the murderer, tells her to leave things alone. That said, the characters are genuine; you really might meet them at a neighborhood bar. The dialogue feels real. Whodunnit is difficult to discern. All this makes it a good read.
This review reflects my honest and freely given opinion of this ARC.

The Corner Lounge is Jude Dillanes pride and joy. The bar/restaurant is getting good reviews and starting to be the place that they hoped to create. After a bad previous year Jude is hoping this year will bring everything they were hoping for. Unfortunately when a dead body turns up in their dumpster, and the murder weapon is one of her partners knives, things start to go badly wrong.

This is a fast paced murder mystery, with a good storyline, enough twists and turns to keep everyone happy and an ending that promises more to come. This book is the second in the series, where the characters are already well established and filled out, but also a stand alone read. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Last Call is Book 2 in A Murder on the Rocks Mystery by Cathi Stoler. Last Call finds my favorite bar owner, Jude, with her pals on New Year's Eve. Although it is not necessary to read book 1 before reading book 2, I like to read series in order. Last Call continues with characters I really like. Art's brother, Mikey, is bringing in the New Year at The Corner Lounge. Unfortunately, the New Year Killer has a different celebration for Mikey… death. I feel that Cathi Stoler writes a very good mystery. The characters are believable and realistic and the flow of the book is great. The ending was intense and I felt it was perfect. I am looking forward to reading book 3. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Last Call is the second book in the series. I have not read the first, but I found this could be read as a stand alone. Jude Dillan is the owner of the Corner Lounge. Jude discovers a body by the dumpster on the day after her annual New Years Eve party. This is a cozy mystery with some suspense. Jude decides to investigate. She start receiving threats from the killer. Could the killer be one of her customers? There is a good group of supporting characters, Eric, her boyfriend, Sully, her friend.

This is the second book of the series. I enjoyed the first one so I thought why not. It is nice to find Jude, Sully and her restaurant staff again. Jude still makes stupid decisions that make you want to shout at her … especially when there is a serial killer on the loose! Towards the middle of the book I thought it was disappointing how obvious the killer was but it turns out I was wrong all along! The ending did surprise me and there are enough twists to keep you guessing. Good book to unwind for the weekend with an ending that tempts you to get the next one.

New Year’s Eve at the Corner Lounge. A great night for celebration and murder. This is the opening of Last Call, the second book in the series Blue Lake Murder. Jude and friends are back running the restaurant while a serial killer is on the loose. The clues lead to one of the “Irregulars” a group of regulars as being the murderer. Jude once again uses her powers of observation and curious nature to help solve the latest murder. This book continues with the family feel between the friends with believable characters and realistic surroundings. This was a hard book to put down – a great cozy read by the fire. Thanks to BookSiren for the ARC of this book.

LAST CALL is the newest fast-paced mystery from Cathi Stoler. Bar owner Jude Dillane is one of those sleuths who doesn't know when to quit--meaning the reader can't quit, either.

There's a serial killer who only murders on New Year's Eve, and Jude's bar holds the next target. The reader feels at home at the Corner Lounge--it's Cheers with a corpse and a murderer, and lots of good food. Exciting with a real sense of place, on NYC's Lower East Side, this one is a worthy installment in the Murder on the Rocks series.

Who can you trust, if not your friends, drinking buddies, and regular customers? That's the question stumping Jude Dillane and Thomas "Sully" Sullivan, her landlord and friend. The dumpster behind The Corner Lounge, Jude's bar/restaurant hides a body. Turns out, it's the recently arrived brother of one of Jude's regular customers, Art Bevins. Who would want him dead, and why? Who among the "10th Street Irregulars," Sully among them, would have the guts to do such a thing? Last Call by Cathi Stoler keeps the reader guessing.

The third book in a series set in a unique bar/restaurant in New York that belongs to Jude. Jude, her boyfriend and her landlord investigate a murder that has happened during the New Year's Eve festivities and it is the work of a serial killer who has struck during other New Year's Eve celebrations.

There are a lot of false trails and some real scary parts when the trio get closer to what is happening.

This is a great book in the series and it can be read as a standalone.

Thanks to Book Sirens for an advanced copy of this book. This is what I consider a cozy mystery. Quick reading, but a good mystery. The author gives you a choice of murderers, and ties it all up well, without gory details. Since this is the second book in a series, and there were a lot of references to the first book, I will now read the first one to fill in more information on the characters. The ending makes it a must to read the third book, and I am looking forward to that.

I haven't read the first book in this series and I don't think you really have to begin with it. Jude gets drawn into the killing of a patron of her bar. At times it is hard to justify her involvement in the investigation. She ends up putting her life in danger chasing a serial killer. I did not find this story to be particularly engaging. I had a hard time really believing it. I did not connect with the MC at all. The way the author ended the book also did not set well with me.

Suspenseful, Murder Mystery
This is a tense and scary serial murder mystery. It involves the FBI BAU as in the TV show Criminal Minds. The book is not as graphic as that show can be, but it is just as tense. The plot is well done with fully developed characters. While this is the second in a series, it does stand alone well. Last Call is denser and darker than the first book in the Murder on the Rocks series. As a sequel, it can offer more action than Bar None did. The protagonist's character and character flaws are more developed, and New York City is less prominently featured. While it is a pretty quick read with some intricate plotting, I did not enjoy Last Call as much as the first book.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a fun, relaxing book. Jude owns a bar in NYC. It has a nice mix of neighborhood characters. On New Years Eve, the brother of one of her regulars is murdered by a serial killer. She and Sully, her landlord and former Marine, do some sleuthing. This book was a quick read. Recommended.

Jude gets involved in another murder when she knows the victim's brother. She really gets going when she finds out that he was a victim of a serial killer, a serial killer the FBI hasn't been able to catch for the past few years. Things get personal when the killer leaves notes to her to 'back off' and one of her bartenders is missing. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from BookSirens.

I am not a New York fan, at all. So the setting did not add to the story for me. The bar was filled with interesting characters.. Pete seemed a bit off for the setting but he wasn't a main character. Eric was a bit of a commanding person. That was a bit of a turn off. But the actual main mystery was a good story. The food sounded wonderful. I enjoyed the mystery.

This book continues the series set in New York City on the lower east side. A bar owner/amateur sleuth is a strong female protagonist with plenty of interesting bar patrons to flesh out the characters.

Can this bar owner solve this serial killer murder spree that has gone on for years? Or will the killer take her out first.

This one was so much better than the first book in the series. From beginning to end, I was on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out who the killer was, and every when I thought I knew, I was proven wrong in the end. Looking forward to reading the rest in the series.

I got a copy of this for free.

Another mystery falls into the lap of bar & restaurant owner Jude, and she is just as eager to solve it. This time there is a serial killer on the loose, and the FBI gets involved.
There is a lot of thrills and action until the very end.

I did like the first book a little more, but this was still very enjoyable! I definitely want to read the next book.

Wow! I love this sequel to Bar None.

Full of suspense, quick-paced story. The characters are more interesting and developed than the previous one.

I have to say that i like the second book better than the first one. It kept me intrigued!

Good job to the author!
