This is not the sort of book that one usually reads cover to cover, but as someone who has certainly dealt with my fair share of anxiety, this is a book I can readily appreciate. The Bible does speak about worry, anxiety, and related subjects quite a lot, and this does a very good job at providing a substantial portion of that material in a way that can be used as a resource for Bible study, prayer, and personal reflection. To the extent that the reader is troubled by such issues--as all too many of us are--this book is a reminder that the Bible preaches a consistent message that we are to overcome such matters with faith and courage. If that is not always easy to do, this book certainly does a good job providing exhortation without being heavy-handed about it, and it is to be regretted that this book does not have an individual author who could be praised and appreciated for the tact that this book shows.
This book is organized rather simply but that is definitely for the best. In a bit more than 200 pages, the book contains 100 Bible verses that deal with subjects of worry and anxiety. Each of these chapters is organized in the same fashion, beginning with the relevant verse, then looking at the context, meaning, and application of such verses, before providing three similar verses for cross-referencing and further Bible Study. As a worthwhile research for those dealing with or speaking about anxiety, this book has a lot to offer.
This book is not what I was expecting but in a very good way! Being a worry wart has been a struggle for me most of my adult life. In the last few years due to health issues, family losses and medication changes, my battle with worry and anxiety has reached an all-time high. So of course my interest was piqued in reading this book. I was expecting to find the best known and loved scriptures concerning this subject and an application or story to go with them. I am pleased to say I found much more! This book goes much deeper than that! Yes it has those comforting verses but it also has truths from the Bible that remind a Christian of their foundation in Christ and the true Source of all comfort. Each page with a verse has four parts: Context: This gives a background what is going on in the scripture, in relation to the lesson, the events and the people involved. Meaning: I found this very helpful. It fleshes out the verse with visualization, feelings, and thoughts. I found many helpful insights in the section. Application: I think of the three, this one helped the most. When you are caught up in anxiety your thinking can get muddled. This part gave me direction in how to use what I had read and learned. At the end of each section are included more scriptures to read. Far more than just a Bible references to verses. A wonderful book! This is a little, but powerful book . I enjoyed looking at one entry a day and placing the wisdom from the page into my heart for the day.
These entries consist of the Bible verse to be considered, as well as the meaning and how it can be applied. There are also additional readings included.
It is not meant to be read in any certain order, so you may read them in order or skip around. I believe this book is very useful not just in the time of the pandemic but through the worries and anxieties than confront us every day.
“Walking in God’s forgiveness and knowing that he holds you in his hands is one of the greatest weapons that you have against fear and worry,” the application section notes in Bethany House’s book, 100 Best Bible Verses to Overcome Worry & Anxiety.
~ What ~ This two-hundred-and-eight-page paperback targets those who want to stop worrying and having anxiety and learn to trust in the Lord more. With no introduction or instructions, there are one-hundred Bible verses with context, meaning, and application divisions. Using mainly the New International Version of the Holy Bible, the Christian Standard, ESV, GNT, NASB, NLT, NKJV, the Passion Translation, and KJV are also referenced.
Focusing on anxiety or fear that all of us feel, the book that is written by twenty-five contributors concentrates on uplifting and encouraging Bible verses to consider during times of stress and distress. Each short one-to-three verses are written out, followed by its context. A paragraph or two discusses the meaning behind the chosen verse or verses, and an application describes how to look to God for the answers. Each ending has additional verses noted.
~ Why ~ In these complicated times, it is hard as a Christian to not feel anxious or worrisome in everyday life. I appreciate the explanations and how the applications encourage us to bring the Lord foremost into our thinking and acting. One example I liked was from Psalm 46:1 about God being our refuge. The context shows how the verse is a song of confidence in God’s power and deliverance. The meaning behind the verse expounds that although life is unpredictable and full of strife, it reminds us that God is our strength when in trouble. The application challenges the reader to pray and lean on Him instead of ourselves. Psalm 46:10, Psalm 145:14, and Deuteronomy 31:6 are additional reading.
~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ will not understand why we need to seek God for calmness and peace. Others may wish specific Bibles were not used as they may not be concise.
~ Wish ~ It would be helpful if there was a reference section or a way to have all verses listed in the front or back of the book. I prefer all pronouns of God capitalized for reverence.
~ Want ~ If you are stressed out and tired of being tense, this short read will recenter you to look to Christ for help and assurance that He is in control.
Thanks to Bethany House for this complimentary book that I am freely reviewing.
100 Best Bible Verses to Overcome Worry & Anxiety is a book geared to assist readers in dealing with their fears. Bethany House has enclosed a brand-new tool. The book enclosed verses found throughout the entire Bible. Each verse contained a verse, a brief explanation of what the context means, commentary on the meaning, how we apply it to our lives, and additional reading. The book will provide readers with the tools to handle and manage their fears.
The book begins with 1 Peter 5:7 and this one was written by Peter in order to provide hope for the people who were suffering. His message is meant to testify to the true grace of God and stand fast. This verse explained how we need to cast all of our anxiety on God and it reminded us that He cares for us. They reminded readers that Peter walked with Jesus and he was also forgiven by Him when he rejected and denied Him. Peter through experience has learned how to cast all of his worries and concerns to Jesus. This verse helps readers in their own lives in not letting life stress you out but to reply on God.
Another verse included was Matthew 6:33 and this one discussed seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness and how all will be given to you. The context in this one is Matthew who was a tax collector who became an apostle. Jesus preached this sermon on the Mount and this included how we can obey God, praying with humility, becoming a true follower of Christ, and living in freedom from fear. This one reminded us to not to worry and God takes care of the birds and the flowers and how He will also take care of us. It also discussed how when we focus on God’s things and how we won’t have to worry about our unmet needs.
I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is looking for a resource to assist readers into dealing with their worries and fears. I love the vast coverage of scriptures and how each one tried to connect with the readers by using a real-life example. I also liked how they explored the context of where the scripture verse was written in. I believed this helped in understanding how they were written at the time and what this all means for us. This book is a wonderful collection written by Bethany House. I believe it will help readers to overcome their fears and worries and to live a more fearless life.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Bethany House/Chosen Books for my honest review.”
If ever there was opportunity to struggle with anxiety, it has been the past sixteen months. The pandemic has changed the way we live, interact, go to school, work, and church.
So how are we to win the battle with worry and anxiety?
Bethany House recently released “100 Best Bible Verse to Overcome Worry & Anxiety” . They have gathered together 100 Scriptures which give wise counsel and comfort, making this a wonderful book to reach for when worried or overwhelmed.
Each selection shares the verse at the top of the page. Context and meaning are provided to help the reader understand the verse more fully. Application is also included to help better utilize the Scripture in practical life situations. Each reading closes with additional Scripture references to further one’s understanding.
A few of my favorite thoughts were:
“God doesn’t say there’s something wrong with you if you have anxiety. He is saying, “Give it all to me. I really do care about you.” (page 6)
“We don’t need to know what’s weighing us down; we just need to respond to his three simple yet powerful words: “Come to me ….” (page 10)
“God is … our strength.” It is not we who are strong in the face of loss or fear, but God who is strong on our behalf. And he is not far away but “ever-present.” He is our help. He is our safe place. He is our strength.” (page 50)
“Peace comes to our hearts and minds when we refocus our gaze on our just Father, instead of the evil around us. He allows us the ability to delight, and he satisfies us there.” (page 107)
“Faith is not a vague feeling or concept, but a rooted confidence in who Christ is and a trust that God is who he says he is, and that his promises will come to pass.” (page 156)
This book has been compiled by a group of writers and is a wonderful gift and source of encouragement in these uncertain days in which we are living.
*** I received this book from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
100 Best Bible Verses to Overcome Worry and Anxiety is compiled from writings of several authors and published with Bethany House.
Each two- to three-page spread begins with a Bible verse. The author then adds a brief paragraph about the context the verse was set in. Then several paragraphs about the meaning of the verse and one or two of application are included. Then a few references are listed for additional reading.
Anxiety is probably not something that can be conquered by answering an altar call or sitting down for one massive Bible study. Rather, battling anxiety is a matter of continually feeding our souls truth. This book is a wonderful way to keep God’s provision, protection, and promises continually before us in small but substantial doses.
I very much appreciated that the writers delved into the context of the verses before explaining the meaning and applying them. The context enriches our understanding of the passage and keeps us from spinning our own take on a single sentence.
I’ve repeatedly heard that there are 365 Bible verses that say, “Fear not.” That declaration is often followed by the quip, “One for every day of the year.” I had thought this would be a collection of those verses. It’s not (though such a collection would be a great idea for a devotional book). I was surprised at some of the verses used, as they didn’t seem to directly relate to anxiety or worry. But I came to understand they were foundational verses about God’s character or promises. The more we know Him, the less reason we have to be anxious about anything.
This book doesn’t just try to make readers feel better. It continually points the reader back to God’s character and His Word. Thus, it is an excellent resource when worries or fears try to pull our gaze away from Him.
Want to get rid of anxiety, fight despair and feel happier in your life—and do so quickly and easily? This book will do that and more by using one hundred hope-inspiring Bible verses such as:
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing (I shall not want)” Psalm 23:1
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” John 10:10
“I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears” Psalm 34:4
The context of each verse is explained in an easy to grasp way. Although the explanation is uncomplicated, it is not simple, but a very thorough definition. That is followed by a straight forward meaning of the scripture.
Finally, there is the application of the verse in your life. All parts of this book are very good, but the application part really shines. Suggestions with concrete actions to follow are given for gleaning the most from each scripture. Other verses are given for further investigation.
It will only take a few minutes to read the information about each scripture. Meditate and pray about what you have read. You will start to feel encouragement, love, and that God has got your back. I recommend this five-star book to anyone who needs more assurance and joy in their life.
Chosen Books has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, 100 Best Bible Verses to Overcome Worry and Anxiety, for the purpose of review.
Note: I received a complementary copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was eagerly looking forward to reading 100 Best Bible Verses to Overcome Worry & Anxiety as I struggle with both. The small paperback provides a lot of information in its 200+ pages to help individuals find comfort in the Bible.
Each Bible Verse has its own pages dedicated to it to discuss context, meaning, and application along with additional readings. One could easily read several of these a day or save them to read one a day. You could even skip around the book and read those that stand out to you. The book is very versatile.
Pros - Easy to navigate - Easy to read in short bursts - Provides a context for the quotes so you can understand what it means in relation to the rest of the verses, chapter, and the Bible - Provides additional readings so you can dig deeper
Cons - Some repetition in the context section as you read different quotes from Isaiah and John - At least one outside reference that I feel does not align with the teaching of the Bible in its entirety - Authors are listed at the back but the book does identify who wrote each section
Would I recommend the book? Yes, I think it can hold a lot of value for those struggling with worry and anxiety.
100 Best Bible Verses to Overcome Worry & Anxiety is a valuable resource featuring 100 Bible verses for overcoming worry and anxiety. Verses are stated, the context is shared, then the meaning, and finally application and additional scripture passages. This book is a precious gift that can be an encouragement to many.
The context shared gives some background information. The meaning of the verse uses commentaries and other resources to help the reader understand more about the verse. Application is a practical approach to using the verse in every day life, especially for overcoming worry and anxiety. Additional reading provides a springboard for further comfort and encouragement.
This is a wonderful compilation of some of my favorite verses, all of which are a comfort during times of anxiety (which has certainly been the case the past year and a half!).
Each Bible verse also lists information on the meaning and application, as well as related verses for digging deeper. It could be easily added to one's daily devotional time. Each one is short, but there is definitely something to ponder with each verse.
Overall, this book would be helpful for anyone looking for reminders of why Christians have no reason to fear or worry, as God is with us and in control.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.
I am an avid worrier. Did you know that it is a sin to worry. So here I am sinning everyday so am trying to get a handle on it. This little devotional is perfect to keep me on track. One of the best ways I have found to get my mind off of things and to stop worry and anxiety is to either pray, or recite Bible verses. Thank you to the publisher for my free copy of 100 Best Bible Verses to overcome worry and anxiety. Each section has a verse in which to meditate on, then it gives you context, meaning, application, and a few other verses to look up that relate. This is a great way to practice for verse memorization too, which is something I really need to work on.
Although there’s a few lines of commentary that I don’t agree with—overall this book did a great job of laying out scriptures that teach us to trust God more than ourselves. Some very common ones—but then others that aren’t quoted as often…ultimately reminding that we will outlive all of our problems and worries.
