What does a person have to do to get a little privacy?
Spoiler Alert!
Be sure to read The Good Neighbor before reading this novella!
IN this light bridge novella I'm seeing what's happened with Frankie and Sean? By spring, it had been five months since they found Amber—or rather, since she found Sean. Now he and Amber were living with his mom Stephanie, and Frankie was living alone—not the best situation for Sean and Frankie – or for Stephanie and Max. And what about Amber? It was hard to believe everything was just smooth sailing for her after such a huge upheaval in her life. By now you have probably figured out how real these characters are to me! I couldn’t leave them in this situation. The story started to grow and turned into this sequel novella, written specially for my most loyal readers who have been reading all the Murphy family Fortune Bay books. If you haven’t read the other books, do yourself a favor and put this book aside until you have. I hope you enjoy Family Matters as much as I enjoyed writing it! Judy Hudson
Judith writes romantic women's fiction, women's fiction and mystery under the name of J.M. Hudson.
Her latest book came out in October 2024, Italian Murder Mystery, the second Rocky and Bernadette travel mystery. This time, Rocky and Bernadette are in Cremona Italy the violin capital of the world. It should be a fun week full of scrumptious Italian food, beautiful medieval architecture and wonderful music, Until Rocky's old friend Hamish turns up dead in the Piazza. Rocky owes Hamish his life, so he has to step in.
The Secret of Elk Horn Lodge, is women's fiction rich with family mystery beginning decades ago. Holly thought she was alone in the world since the recent death of her mother, but then she receives a curious letter from the lawyers of a Grandfather she didn't know she had. It requests her attendance at the reading of his will in the town of Skookum on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island. What she discovers here will change her life forever - a new family who wants to claim her inheritance, an abandoned but quite wonderful hunting lodge, and a half-sister she has never known. Grandad has given her three months to find her sister, the co-inheritor of the lodge, or the whole thing goes to the grasping cousins with their unscrupulous plans.
Judith's romantic women's fiction series, the seven Fortune Bay books, is set on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. In each book, someone at a crossroads of their life moves into a ramshackle cabin on Majestic Lake. While there, they work through their problems with the help of friends and family, and with the occasional nudge from the friendly spirit of Aunt Augusta, the cabin's previous owner. If a romance grows in the process, and it always does, well, so much the better.
Judith grew up in Toronto Canada, went to high school in St. Louis MO, then moved to the Pacific Northwest where she now lives on beautiful Vancouver Island.
As an landscape artist and photographer, the setting of the story is very important to Judy. "I've painted in the area for many years and I think it helps me make the setting real for the reader. Helps draw them into the story. My characters are often artists, like Maddie, the darkroom photographer in Summer of Fortune who is at Fortune Bay for the summer to work on her first professional show, and Stephanie, the widowed matriarch of the clan who is finding a new life as a painter." She has also done some work as a travel writer and photographer.
All books are available in paperback and eBook formats, and the Fortune Bay books Temple of the Jaguar are available in audio as well.
Frankie thought everything was going great in her relationship with Sean but since becoming a key figure in the grand opening of the resort and he reuniting with his daughter, Amber, it seems Frankie has taken a back seat to everything else in his life. They are drifting apart and nothing she does seems to help. She never has time alone with Sean and can’t seem to get close to Amber, and now Amber is failing most of her classes at school which is causing even more stress. Instead of moving in together and becoming a family, Sean is pushing her more and more out of his life.
As always with Judith Hudson novels, the characters in this story are well developed and the plot realistically portrays the ups and downs of family relationships. Although this is not a full length book, I really enjoyed it.
Set in a small lakeside town in Washington's Olympic National Forest, lots of town characters hell-bent on seeing all available singles well and happily married. Fun story. This series is kind of like an Oreo cookie - you can't read just one story.
THIS is real life at its best, nothing grandiose, just family, good friends and two way relationships that help us make the right choices to enjoy life, despite the complications. Loved it.
It was great to see where Sean and Frankie were and how Amber was blending in with everyone. I loved meeting Stephanie's mom as well. A very fiesty lady
While this novella is completely self-contained and does not end on a cliff hanger, it should definitely be read AFTER reading the other books so that one is familiar with the characters and situations. The other books in this series are fabulous and I would highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys the romance or women's fiction genre.
Every trip back to Fortune Bay makes me happy, and this was no exception. A lot of things are packed into this novella, but thanks to Ms. Hudson's beautiful writing style it never feels rushed or half-finished. I love revisiting characters that we had met previously, and the foreshadowing for the next book in the series.
If you have read the other books in this series, you will love this trip back to Fortune Bay.
Great series! This is more of a continuation so it may be better to read the previous book first. Very realistic issues are brought forth which really test the strength of the relationships of a few of the couples. I enjoyed hearing more about the characters and getting closure on some of the family drama. :)

Family Matters: a Fortune Bay Sequel Novella I just finished reading Family Matters and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have ever longed to be part of a large happy family this novella pulls you right in and leaves you with a warm, happy feeling. It’s Frankie and Sean’s story and of course that includes his daughter, Amber. There are so many characters from the Fortune Bay Series and each gets their happy ending -even Frankie’s father.
We get to hear from the gang but this one is primarily about Frankie, Sean, and Amber. I love Frankie, Sean makes me want to scream sometimes, and Amber is a teenage who has been through so much. Loved all the relationships and the interruptions were hilarious. We do get a happy ending and Frankie and Sean learn a lot about themselves and each other.
I loved this novella. Beautifully tied up some loose ends and delivered a few happily ever afters which I had been so desperately hoping for. Best read in sequence, as it will provide the happiest of endings to the series!!
