To be fair, this is my first Splatoon collection, 12 volumes in, so I might not get all the “nuance” that there is. The long and short of it - squid kids fight “turf battles” with ink guns against other teams. There’s a little bit of fighting bad guys as well, it seems. Also, one kid likes to pull people’s pants down and jump out of his clothes.

The underlying action seems innocent, if facile, and kind of fun. Unfortunately, it seems this series is following so much of reading material aimed at young kids and going for an easy “potty/gross-out” humor angle. Making pantsing people a joke in a comic would seem to make it funny instead of demeaning if it would happen in real life. My kiddo didn’t seem to have too much of a problem that it happened in print; “kinda weird” is how she put it, so we’ll be having a conversation and starting from there.

Another fantastic read--so many surprises! I really like the addition of Sheldon's arc. I would love to see that be the story arc for Splatoon 3 or even the Splatoon game after that--that's how much I love it.

D loves this series. We just got volume 12 from the library. He was so excited to pick it up and read it. He reads these books so quickly, within an hour probably. They make him laugh out loud. (7th grade)

Great story, my Kiddo loves these books. They are not hard to follow, and have alot of great action words. It is a great companion piece tot he splatoon games.

This review applies to vol 9-12. I read all these in quick succession; the MC and his team finish up the ranked battles with the usual shonen antics. Lots of food puns and pantsing. He then takes on an octoling hero mission then begins the climb up the mountain to get the rare weapon treasure.
