A stalker threatens the family he never knew he wanted
Travis Colton finds that a passionate night with his co-CEO, Tatiana Davison, rocks his world. Not long after, his life changes further when Tatiana confides her pregnancy…and the fact her life is in danger! To the surprise of relationship-averse Travis, he quickly develops undeniable feelings for the family he must keep safe. But when a stalker homes in, Travis must risk it all.
This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the third book in the Coltons of Grave Gulch series. This book picks up where the second book end. The ending of the second book is where Travis is quickly telling is family who a lot of them are Police his new co-CEO of his company is Tatiana Davison. They telling him that Tatiana's father is being looked for because he is a serial killer. We learn within the first chapter of this book that Tatiana is pregnant with Travis child because of an one night of heated time together. Tatiana is pulled in two different ways (her love for her Dad and her wanting to help the Police) through out this whole book. This book has a lot of romance and suspense. I think the mix between romance and suspense was really good. I really enjoyed this book so much. I loved getting to know a story of a Colton that is not part of the police at all. I am really loving this series.
Tatiana Davison had a one-night stand with her new co-CEO of Colton Plastics, Travis Colton, and now she's pregnant as a result. She has only just returned to Grave Gulch after fleeing to France when her father was accused of murder. But now the charges have been dropped, she's back. But it turns out that the evidence implicating her father was deliberately taken - and now there has been a second murder that implicates him!
In order to shield the mother of his child from law enforcement - although he keeps asking his law enforcement siblings over to question her - and the media, Travis has Tatiana move in with him. It seems everybody wants a piece of the daughter of an accused serial killer. As it turns out, Travis will also need to protect Tatiana from someone who is obsessed with her father's alleged crimes, and this stalker now wants Tatiana for himself.
This being book 3 of a 12 book mini-series, I did feel like I had been dropped into the middle of a movie that was already partway through. A motive is never established as to why Tatiana's father would be murdering people, which for me would be instrumental in understanding why Tatiana would be so convinced her father is a killer. The police rightly say that they don't need to establish motive - that's for lawyers, but as a reader I needed one, because I had trouble believing that Tatiana would so easily believe her father was as serial killer, while still loving him and trying to protect him. "Everyone says it so it must be true," doesn't really cut it!
Nevertheless, Tatiana's conflict over not wanting to dob her father in at least rang true, so I could empathise and understand her actions. As for Travis, I could just never warm to him. Romance writers, PLEASE do not have your "hero", after being told by the heroine that he's the father of her child, ask her, "Are you sure it's mine?" Yuck, yuck, yuck! He might as well be asking her, "Are you sure you're not a slut?" That he then goes and proposes they get married made me like him even less. The fact that Tatiana calls him out on his 1950s attitude made me like her more.
Travis has a big ol' chip on his shoulder about being lied to, because he was once engaged to a woman who lied to him, because she was only ever after the money she thought he was going to make, and he vowed to be a bachelor ever since. Tatiana feeds him some white lies about her father, and when he finds out about them, very late in the book, he is again questioning his paternity, figuring she could lie about that as well, and the lies she has told him are the worst lies EVER, when really, they barely even affect him.
I'm supposed to like this guy????
I wavered between 2 and 3 stars, because after about 100 pages, this began to get interesting in terms of the suspense plot, with a copycat being obsessed with Tatiana, but it wasn't really explored in great detail, and their identity was completely arbitrary. I didn't like Travis much at all, and I didn't like his sister, Melissa, either, who was continually undermining and embarrassing him in front of their family. The suspense plot wraps up unconvincingly (Travis randomly figures out the copycat is a true crime fan. Huh?) and the climax is a fumbled mess.
Judging by this and Her Dark Web Defender, Dana Nussio has a better handle on juggling the romance and suspense than others in this line, but both times her story has been severely undermined by a really annoying or unlikeable main character.
(I was going to go into a spiel about the unbelievability of there being that much police and media interest and attention on the daughter of a murder suspect, and the unlikelihood of an investigation publicly revealing they only have one major suspect, and why Travis would keep on getting his law enforcement family to come over and interrogate her, but I think I suitably demonstrated why I didn't like Travis, and I don't want to write about this book any longer!)
Terrific book. Travis stirred up his family at the end of the previous book, Colton's Killer Pursuit, when he announced that he'd hired Tatiana Davison as his co-CEO at Colton Plastics. He didn't know that her father is an accused serial killer that his law enforcement family members are desperate to capture. He has even more surprises ahead of him.
Sparks flew between Tatiana and Travis from the moment they met. After her successful interview, they celebrated with a little too much wine and wound up in bed together. The feelings she stirred up in him freaked Travis out, and he left as fast as he could afterward, planning to pretend it never happened. Tatiana would like nothing better, but she doesn't have that option. When she arrives for her first day of work, she also needs to tell Travis that she's pregnant. Though he immediately proposes, Tatiana turns him down flat. She's okay with being a single mom and won't marry without love.
I like Travis. He's a good man who has some unfortunate issues. He's the only member of his family not involved in law enforcement of some kind which leaves him feeling out of step. He has problems with his father, who always seems to expect the worst when Travis talks about his business. He also has significant trust issues thanks to a former girlfriend who lied to him about her feelings.
I also liked Tatiana. She is a smart, capable woman who became the CEO of the engineering side of Colton Plastics. I also ached for her. The police hound her for information about her father, the media won't leave her alone, and she has a stalker. She's torn between knowing that her father needs to be caught and not wanting to betray him. Finding out she's pregnant was a complication she didn't need, but she wouldn't change it for the world.
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Travis and Tatiana. Travis does his best to avoid thinking about how Tatiana makes him feel but becomes very protective of her. This puts him at odds with his family, who don't trust her. When the stalking begins, Travis insists that Tatiana move in with him, which puts a strain on his need to bury his feelings. Tatiana feels safe with Travis, but she also feels guilty because she hasn't been completely honest with him. They grow closer the more time they spend together, and each of them has visions of what could be. However, when revealed, Tatiana's deceptions hurt and infuriate Travis, driving a wedge between them. It takes some advice from an unexpected source and nearly losing her to the stalker for Travis to admit his feelings and do something about it. His big moment at the end was sweet and romantic.
The suspense kept me hooked from beginning to end. I felt terrible for Tatiana, who was hit with a double whammy. First, she had to deal with the knowledge that her father is suspected of being a serial killer, released from jail because of the GGPD's rogue forensic scientist. Then she faced the horror of having a stalker who is obsessed with both Tatiana and her father. Glimpses into the mind of the stalker increased the tension as I waited to see what he'd do next. I loved how Travis figured out who it was and was on the edge of my seat as the final confrontation went down. There's a nice lead-in to the next book, as Tatiana's father and the missing forensics scientist remain at large.
Plenty of family drama also plays a part in this book. Travis walks a fine line between Tatiana and his family as his protectiveness butts up against their suspicions. That family dinner was challenging, and Travis's feelings of being on the outside were powerful. He also had his problems with his father to deal with. I ached for him and how he felt a lack of support. I liked seeing them finally talk and clear the air. When all is said and done, the Coltons always have each other's backs.
Scintillating drama added to red hot chemistry makes for an exciting addition to the Coltons of Grave Gulch series! Bringing the brainy Colton into the mix, Dana Nussio weaves a powerful tale of intrigue and danger as Travis and Tatiana mix business with pleasure in COLTON'S NURSERY HIDEOUT and I was hooked from the start.
Travis feels a bit like the odd man out in his family of law enforcement over-achievers, but he's a steady and creative force at Colton Plastics. I enjoyed him.
Tatiana was easy to sympathize with as the world starts to crumble around her feet every way she turns. Her father is in hiding and under suspicion of being a serial killer, and just when she thought she'd been handed enough to handle for the moment she gets the shock of her life ... she's pregnant!
I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who enjoys a fast paced mystery filled with danger, romance and a powerfully driven family. I'm looking forward to more in the series!
Colton Nursery Hideout, the third title in the Coltons of Grave Gulch multi-author mini-series, was quick to grab my attention and held me captive to a story that is emotionally charged on so many levels. The action begins in the first chapter as the tensions, danger, and sizzling romantic sparks fly around Tatiana and Travis as they begin to co-CEO Colton Plastics amidst an unexpected pregnancy, information about Tatiana’s family coming to light, a deadly serial killer on the loose, and a stalker who will stop at nothing until he has Tatiana as his own… or her death for not wanting him. Talk about a roller-coaster ride of a romance!
I loved Tatiana from the start. She’s smart, stubborn, and is facing challenges on so many fronts. Her impulsive attraction to the man who is now her co-CEO after their interview for the job has stunned her in its intensity and her choice to do something about that fiery passion. Never would she have thought that she’d end up pregnant, but here they are trying to figure out how to face co-parenting in the middle of the other things happening to her. She’s being hounded by the police and the media because she is an accused serial killer’s daughter. By their logic she has to know where her father is… but she doesn’t, well, not for certain. Add into the mix a stalker who intends to make Tatiana his own and will stop at nothing to make that happen only adds additional tension to the strong, sizzling romantic feelings she’s having for a man who never, ever intended to be a husband or father.
It took me a bit longer to fall for Travis though. He’s a stubborn man, so deeply convinced that because he didn’t follow the rest of his siblings into law enforcement in some manner that he’s not only an outcast in his family but that his father doesn’t approve of his chosen path in life that this opinion colors just about everything in his life. He’s wrong on all counts, but that doesn’t really matter in the long run for it’s what Travis believes and until he can be convinced otherwise he will continue to deny himself all that he truly wants in life beyond his company. Until Tatiana comes along and rocks his world in so many different ways. I enjoyed watching a strong, stubborn man see the error of his beliefs over the course of this story. And that push away then pulled back he felt toward Tatiana is so obvious to anyone in sight.
We get a very real sense of what it’s like to be hounded by the police and the never-ending glare of the news media in Colton Nursery Hideout. Tatiana kept vital information to herself when she shouldn’t have. Oh, I completely understand her reasons, but still that added complications to all of her relationships. I had a general idea about the stalker but was still surprised by how that was resolved. We get another look at the widespread Colton connections in Grave Gulch, a hint of the next story to come – and a really good, intense, satisfying romance for this couple. If you love your romances with a touch of danger then this series would be perfect for you.
This book starts out with a really big surprise not only for the heroine Tatiana but also for her co-chief executive officer Travis Colton. The author weaves a wonderful web of suspense and intrigue while keeping us grounded in the fledgling relationship between the couple.
Family is at the core of this entire story. I love how the author takes each individual character’s issues and shines a light on them independent of the situation they have going on around them. Each person must come to terms with their own flaws and must navigate the hardships they have with the people in their lives. Misunderstandings are brought to light and wounds are healed and the author does a wonderful job of writing an emotional and compelling story. I will also say here that her bad guys are written in such a way that I would never, ever, want to meet them in a dark alley.
For as much as is going on in the extended Colton family, one thing is abundantly clear in every book I've read so far, the Colton’s are there for one another and family means everything. Love this author's writing style and looking forward to her next book.
