Can they survive long enough for a second chance at forever?
Rescuing a kidnapped aid worker is just another day at work for former special operator Dan Molina. But his mission falls apart when the woman—who once broke his heart—refuses to leave the island.
Alexa Alyssandratos can’t return to her life as a nurse on the hurricane-ravaged Caribbean island, but she won't leave until she’s certain the orphans she cared for—especially one sick little girl—are safe from child traffickers. Denied their ransom, a would-be dictator and his soldiers are hunting Alexa, and Dan is the only person she can trust to protect her. Old passions reignite as Alexa and Dan race to save the children before they disappear forever.
Growing up, Gwen Hernandez wasn’t brave enough to share the stories in her head with other kids, but they usually involved intrigue and romance. She was raised in the Army and Navy, and married an Air Force engineer, so it’s natural that her Men of Steele series features military heroes and heroines who must overcome danger to find true love.
The former programmer and manufacturing engineer also helps authors all over the world find the joy in Scrivener through Scrivener For Dummies, online courses, in-person workshops, and private training.
In her free time, she likes to travel, read, run/bike/hike, flail on a yoga mat, and explore her current home of southern California where she writes surrounded by houseplants. Meh. It was ok, but how many times was he going have to rescue her in less than a week. I am really curious about Kurt and Caitlyn. Can their book be next please?
What an AWESOME follow-up to Blind Fury, Gwen Hernandez (and I absolutely LOVED Blind Fury...)!!! I definitely wanted to smack Alexa/Alyssa for quite a bit of this book, but I got where she was coming from in the end... and anyway, Dan more than made up for it *SWOON*.
A tiny Caribbean island makes up the location for this story where everything from kidnapping for ransom, selling of orphaned children all the while bringing back two people who once shared a wonderful couple weeks together but one walked away afterwards.
Alexa Alyssandratos is in her mind serving penance for her twin sisters death by using her family’s wealth to help those less fortunate than her. She has been working as a nurse in a small clinic on St. Isidore Island when she is kidnapped by the local rebel lord for ransom. Even while she locked up in a tiny shack she is more worried about the little island girl she has helped and is trying adopt.
Dan Molina used to be an Air Force Parajumper. It was when he was serving in the Air Force that he met Alexa and he fell in love with her but she broke his heart when she refused to even consider a future together. Now he is working for Steele Security and he’s been requested to rescue Alexa by her father.
Things do not go well during the rescue and not only are these two trying to stay one step ahead of the rebels while also trying save the orphaned children, they also are fighting their strong attraction to each other while working through their past demons.
This is the second book in the series that introduced us to the group of former Air Force PJ’s. I thought the story flowed better throughout this one and it certainly kept you on your toes wondering how these two were going to make it out of the situation they kept finding themselves in. I am certainly intrigued now to find out more about Kurt Steele (the boss at Steele Security) and Caitlyn Brevard who runs chartered plane’s out of Barbados.

Okay, So I'm going to make this review short, because I have a feeling that if I think about this book to long, the more fault I will find with it. And I enjoyed the book and do not wish to make it worse in my mind than it already is.
In many ways this is a hot story. We meet Alexa, who have devoted her life to other people. She is a nurse in a corrupt and broken society on a little island outside of Haiti. When she is kidnapped by the rebels, her estranged father calls in the only man she regret she ever left, but she (in her mind) had her reasons and due to that, had to hurt him. Bad! Dan, who have spent the last three years getting his life back on track after the whole Alexa catastrophe, reluctantly takes on the mission to go in and save her. But she has a mind of her own, refuses to follow the plan and leave without the one person she has allowed into her heart. And Dan has no other choice than to help.
It was a great story and I really like those plots that's are about a couple, running from bad guys, in the jungle and uses what they have with and around them to survive. I find it highly exciting and I love to sit in my couch, safe and sound, reading about that couple running for their life and do MacGyver tricks to survive. Unfortunately my biggest problem with this book is that constant rant about how she hurt him, how he hurt her, how she doesn't deserve better, how he doesn't deserve someone like her and it goes on and on and on. All the reasons are legit but I do however feel that Dan maybe have been overreacting and all that happened after is entirely his fault. And that Alexa's reasons may be a little too far fetch but hey, what do I know? But done is done and I do understand that. However it was tiring and tedious to read it over and over. There was no end. Not even at the end of the book, but it is still somewhat of an Happy Ending.
So I give the book a three star rating. It is a good book but not a great book.
Love is a powerful emotion but she feels guilty because of her sister’s death and believes she doesn’t deserve happiness.
This is the second installment in the Men of Steele series and this was a great read. I know that towards the end of the book my tears would not stop falling because I felt so bad for Flore and Alexa “Alyssa”. I also felt bad for Dan because he loved her but she was really shutting him out and there was nothing he could do. I loved that Alyssa was trying to do good and she took her profession so seriously but she also deserved happiness and she was being too hard on herself. She wanted to help everyone and she didn’t care what happened to her she just wanted to help.
Alexa “Alyssa” Alyssandratos is a nurse and helping in a clinic in St. Isadore Island. She has fallen in love with a 9 year old little girl but she has to stay on the island for six weeks for them to do an investigation to make sure she has no family. When she told her story about what happened to her twin sister I felt so bad for her and hated that she was blaming herself. That guilt was not letting her be happy and if she didn’t get her head out of the sand she was going to lose a good man. Everything went to hell when rebels stormed into the clinic where she was working and kidnapped her but what was worse that the other nurse working was stabbed. She had no idea if they had found Flore who was in a hidden space and if the nurse got medical attention.
Dan Molina had been in a short relationship with Alexa so he was very surprised to hear that she has been kidnapped. When his boss called him in and told him that Alexa’s father wanted for him to go to St. Isadore Island and rescue his daughter the first thing that went through his mind was why him. He couldn’t believe that he was going to see the person that still haunted him. When Alexa broke off their relationship he ended up getting married to prove that he was over her but that didn’t work out. Now he needed to go save her and be back by the end of the week because he was the best man for his friend’s wedding.
Blind Ambition was a great read. This story was filled with action, mystery, suspense and most of all passion between two characters that were destined to be together. The storyline was intriguing and kept me trying to guess if Alexa was going to not only get to adopt Flore but also if she was going to be able to forgive herself and find happiness. These two characters have lots of passion between even though there were times that they didn’t see eye to eye. The pace of this book was perfect. Ms. Hernandez did well in this read and I hope that she is either already writing the next book or about finished.
I can’t see what she has in store for the Men of Steele series!!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Alyssa is a nurse working in St. Izadore. It is an Island that has been ravaged by a hurricane and earthquakes. At one point it was a big tourist attraction but no longer is.
Dan was a parajumper in the service, rescue was his job. Now he works for a private agency basically doing the same thing. He first met Alyssa 3 years ago when he was doing a Job in St. Izadore.
They had an immediate attraction and acted in it with a 3 week fling. He talked of the relationship continuing but she shut him down and told him it was over. She has demons, guilt over a twin sister that committed suicide when they were 15.
She can never be with Dan or anything because of her sister, or her interpretation of what happened. Her energy goes to helping those in need. The only exception is Flore, a 9 year old girl. Her mother was a nurse with Alyssa and was killed when the rebels raided their town. Flore has no one else and Alyssa has started proceedings to adopt her.
Another raid by the rebels happens and she is taken. Their leader was injured and they want her to tend to his wound. They know who she is though, who she really is.
She is really Alexa and the daughter of a very rich man. They plan on ransoming her.
Kurt, Dan's boss, is contacted by her father specifically requesting Dan to rescue her and so the action begins.....his first shock is when he finds out Alyssa is really Alexa and is an heiress.
Can Dan rescue her? Find Flore? Can they both get the closure they need to go on with their lives or can they maintain a relationship?
I liked this book. They are both very strong, smart people. They fight attraction so much that you want to smack them and lock them in a room til they work out their issues!
They both have guilt issues but Alyssa has it so much worse. Her father was never really a "father". He was more into impressing people with his money. Her mom died during childbirth so there was no one for her and her sister, they just had each other. There is an older brother but he really isn't in the picture. Dan at least had a wonderful grandmother after his parents died.
Dan saved her life many times in a short period of time and would have done it again if he had too. Occasionally they gave in to their feelings but always backed off emotionally after. They both know they love one another.
Dan gives her the talk she needs and she does some hard thinking. She looks at her life in the past and what she wants in the future.
I would recommend this book. I have such a respect for aid workers who go to other countries to work in the most terrible conditions.
I loved this story, I loved every single word of it. It took me for an emotional roll-a-coaster, from sheer happiness, to heartbreak, to fear, panic, anxiety and concern, to sorrow and suffering... The action is non stop, with new surprises behind every turn, that kept me on my toes, and biting my fingernails. There's no place that is safe, there's few people whom they can trust, they are against an army, with what at times feels like with their bare hands, and the fight is fierce. Fight to survive, stay alive, keep the others alive, without major injuries, it is intense. Alexa is making amends, for things that happened in her past, that she cannot forgive herself, or let herself enjoy life, or accept happiness. Cause she does not deserve it. She works fearlessly at the clinic, taking care of everyone, saving as many lives as she possible can. Three years ago, she fell in love, but had to walk away from the man she still carries in her heart, because where she was, and is, in her life, with her atonement of her past mistakes. Now that man is the one who can save her, save her from the certain death, give her her life back. Dan is a true hero, saving lives is what he lives for. He is honorable, kind, caring, and protective, a true warrior, with a tender heart. He has his past demons, but nothing has ever cut as deep as loosing the one woman he loved. The mistakes he made after the heartbreak cost him dearly, and now as he is working to get on with his life, he is called for a rescue mission, to save Alexa. While on the mission Dan and Alexa has to face their past, find a way to trust again, and a way to be truly honest with each other. The connection they have is scorching hot, the passion is palpable. But there's so much more between them than just passion, and the emotional journey they have to take while on the run, is so touching, tender, and wistful, it melted my heart. The rescue mission does not go as planned, or as I presumed. The intensity of the story keeps hold from the page one to the end. Dan and Alexa works on their issues hard, they humble themselves, let go of foolish pride, and make compromises, to try to make a future together. An amazing romantic suspense story with a military twist, that left me breathless. I will be looking for more books in this series in the future ~ Five Spoons!
Blind Ambition is the second book in the Men of Steele series. I read and really enjoyed book one, but I don't think anyone would be lost if they read this as a standalone. The series is based around a protection/black ops/mercenary type agency. Dan is assigned to rescue a kidnap victim, Alexa, with whom he had a brief but meaningful affair years ago. Alexa had never forgotten Dan. If she ever saw herself as capable of being loved, she would want it to be him. Alexa had allowed years of difficult experiences to warp her view of her own worth and purpose. She can't believe it when Dan rescues her in just the nick of time. Unfortunately, the rescue is just the start of their troubles. They spend the next several days fighting to save several children from a rebel leader and fighting their strong attraction to each other.
I thought Dan was perfect for Alexa. He was firm but patient and willing to take a risk and wait for Alex's to realize they were meant to be together. The story was fast paced and full of action. I can't wait to read book three. Thanks to Net Galley for providing a copy for review.
First, I had not read the first book in this series but I will be reading that soon! I really enjoyed Dan and Alyssa's story. There is plenty of action in this book with a wonderful love story. I am constantly in awe of an author who can write a story with such depth, and Gwen is one who can. The love these two share for one another and their common love of helping people is just beautiful. And, as a women, who doesn't want to kick some ass every now and again?!? This is not some helpless woman who lets the big alpha man fight her battles. Yes, he is an alpha man but she is right there with him.
I look forward to adding this series to my watch list and this author to my author watch list. I really think if you like action amd romance that you will be a huge fan if you aren't already.
I received this ARC for an honest review and it is one of the easiest reviews I have written. Great book!
ARC copy requested through Netgalley and kindly provided By ALL NIGHT READS Publishing in exchange for a honest review!
This book was unlike anything I have read in the past, so it was refreshing to read something a little out of my comfort zone. I liked the characters, they had amazing chemistry and were very well written and researched. It is definitely one of those books that takes you on a emotional roller coaster, giving you moments of happiness, fear, heartbreak, excitement and a few blush worthy moments too!
The story line is action packed and very intense, it is one of those books that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and sometimes a little panic stricken that things are going to work out the way you'd like.
Overall I really enjoyed this story and was glad I decided to venture outside of my comfort zone and try something new! Highly recommend this book!
This is a follow up of the group of men we met in Blind Fury but it's not necessary to read one to read the other, I suggest it but like I said not necessary. Dan, wasn't my favorite male lead for some reason I just didn't like him as much as I probably should have. Alyssa(Alexa) was a sweet hearted female lead but again not the connection I hoped for from either character. This is a decent military type romance and if you enjoy those you'll enjoy this. It just seemed rather....I guess cliché. I am intrigued by the idea of Caitlyn Brevard getting her own story next, with one of our back ground men. Also I am still curious about Tara and Collin. This was a complimentary e-copy provided by the author-publisher in exchange for a honest review.
Smokin' hot cover with a high stakes story to match! Love the emotional conflict between the hero, who's loved heroine for years and the heroine, who knows she doesn't stand a chance with the hero if he uncovers her real identity. This is Book 2 of 'Men of Steele' series and a riveting read. Highly recommend.
Fantastic story that will appeal to fans of Suzanne Brockmann and Cindy Gerard. I loved Alexa and Dan and really felt for them as they struggled to find their way forward. The romance and suspense story lines are well-developed and pack a big emotional punch.
What I consider a good read is one that grabs you at the beginning and doesn't let up. Keeps you guessing what is around the next bend. Plan to read more of Me Hernandez
Let it be known, I love military romance. And second-chance romance is not as bad as I thought once, but I still hesitate any time a book of such a case falls into my hands. That being said, this one was a real good combination of the two, and quite balanced, although it did make me want to throttle the heroine once or twice while reading (not out of hate, mind you).
Dan Molina is a former pararescueman working for Steele. We saw him in the first book, cracking jokes and kicking ass like nobody's business. But this seemingly fine man has a broken heart - and when he stumbles upon the woman who broke it in one of his missions, things get emotionally heavy on top of dangerous real quick. Can he convince Alexa Alyssandratos that she's safer by his side, and make sure they can get back together?
Honestly, my heart went out to Dan almost instantly. The guy was so in love with Alexa, he would do anything for her. He showed understanding when he finally found out what went wrong between them, and he was 100% behind her and her crazy plans - not to mention her bleeding heart for everything alive around her.
Alexa, too, was a nice female lead. I wanted to yell at her for dragging Dan around and all this emotional grief she subjected him to, but I couldn't, because I get why she did it all. I can't say I would do the same, but it's understandable and it broke my heart to see why she was so intent on punishing herself. Thankfully, she came around - even if they both struggled until then.
This book was a worthy successor of the previous one, and I can't wait to start reviewing the next in the series. The pace and the hotness - not to mention the suspense and action-packed plot, full of twists and emotional roller coasters - were enough to keep me at the edge of my seat. The Steele men are surely a team to put your trust as a reader in.
“I’ve been carrying you next to my heart for three years, Dan, but really, you’ve been inside my heart the whole time.” – Alexa Alyssandratos
***I was given an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinion stated in this review is solely mine, and no compensation was given or taken to alter it.***
I was caught from the first page, Alyssa was so brave and her beautiful heart was a bright light shining through out this this whole book. Dan had such a gallant , but guarded heart , for everyone except Alyssa. This was such a beautiful story that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to end. BRAVO 👏👏BRAVO 👏BRAVO
Best book in the series so far. Loved this story about second chances and finding a child of your heart to love. Lots of angst but lots of hotness too. Well written and well edited.
Dan & Alyssa had a 3 week affair over 3 years ago, then she broke ot off and broke his heart. Now he's been sent to rescue her. This has angst, steam, danger, and heart. Love these characters.
First book by this Author and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed the storyline although there was a lot of action in a short amount of time. I'm not sure it would be possible but inspire of that, it was a good read.
Dan Molina is sent to the hurricane ravaged Caribbean island of St. Isidore to find and bring home a kidnapped aid worker by the name of Alexa Alyssandrao. His mission falls apartment when he realized that Alexa is Alyssa the only women to shatter his heart. When Alyssa refuses to leave the Island until sick children are safe Dan does everything he can to protect the one woman he loves from disappearing forever. Who doesn’t love second chance love stories with an alpha male and a strong female character who is trying to use her money to bring good into a torn apart country? However once I started the book it became really clear that Alyssa would be one of the female leads I wouldn’t be able to connect with because she take the weight of the world on her shoulders and is never good enough to love anyone because of one mistake in life. I figure Dan would be the redeeming characters instead he was annoying, just as whine as Alyssa and couldn’t seem to stop pinning for the woman until he got her into bed. The basically story lacks creativity it needed to be something new in the military\merc genre of books. The authors wording was slightly off she used the word redding to described when Alyssa blushing and other times a different word would have best to describe what was going on. The ending twist was pretty obvious to the reader bring zero twist to the book. I agreed with Mick in the book when he said “You’re letting her do this to you again.” Dan was a weak character. Alyssa was a weak character and the story lacked creativity. The sex scenes were uncomfortable to read, the fight scenes were ok and the dialog had moments of being funny but fell short. I expect a lot when it comes to this genre because there are so many well written novels out there this is not one of them. Advance Copy sent for my honest Review
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
This is the second book in the "Men of Steele" series. I have not read the first one and luckily, you do not need to read it. The story starts with Alyssa getting kidnapped and Dan being sent to rescue her. They have a history and sparks fly between them.
The story moves quickly and the passion is hot. This was a great introduction to the series and well worth a read.
