James Eggebeen is a serial masochist repeatedly taking high tech companies through the growing pains of converting from a garage shop into a sustainable and profitable mature business.
He learned the value of hard work by being raised on a farm in Wisconsin where he learned auto mechanics from his saintly grandfather who patiently tolerated him and his siblings always under foot. His most frequent comment growing up was "Why did you people settle here when there are much warmer places to live?"
He confounded his teachers and most grown ups at a young age writing incredibly powerful algorithms for phenomenally underpowered computers at the dawn of the computer age. This is a skill he has employed throughout his professional career and still take great pride in (the confounding part mostly).
At 17 years of age he made a deal with the US Navy "Teach me about airplanes and computers. Take me anywhere it doesn't snow and I'm all yours." They kept the bargain and started him on a world traveling adventure that has continued far beyond his six-year enlistment.
He continued his world traveling adventures as a businessman frequently logging one fourth of his time out of he country. He feels as comfortable abroad as he does at home and has developed an appreciation for a wide range of cultures and cuisines.
He settled in Southern California after his service was complete and studied Engineering, Business and Finance at night while working at a series of start-up firms by day. He claims that growing up on the farm and the Navy have ruined his ability to sleep late and habitually gets up well before the sane portion of population starts their day.
Some spoilers. Dear Author, I can’t stand not being able to pronounce words. Reading should be smooth not struggling. About the rest of the book. Story line is good and I did enjoy it but there were these problems. Repition with the dialogue and the story. Don’t know how many times I read zimosom is losing his magic. And Lorit broke into 3 prisons to rescue people. Then there was the glossing over important areas. Like learning to travel by magic. It should have been a big deal. There was nothing. He traveled and he said I just know how to do it now. Lastly, the whole book wizards and sorceress forbidden to have children. It was a rule. Chinon pregnant at the end of the book. Poof no one said anything. I must have skipped over the argument with the counsel.
Female Lead a little whimpy (caution spoiler alert)
As I write this review I am taking into consideration that the books are somewhat dated. But wow wouldn't it be great if the author had written Chindon (sp?) in as a strong female who fought for her dream of a child with Loritt (sp?) rather than just blocking her thoghts from him and moving to the "burbs". ********************** ********************** ********************** SPOILER COMPLETE
But the book is a child of its time and with that in mind, the plot ig and lively and you will Have to read all 3 books to reall enjoy it.
Engrossing three part thriller with a dissatisfied ending
Great story love how new characters kept you going, but what a dreadful ending, this book was all about power death and taking control of people.Buy no Great war, nothing even though the Queen had a great army. And the preachers had masterfully magic it ended up a one on one fight with small knife. Then there was no explanation why all of a sudden they could have a child.Would have gave 2stars if it wasn't ambush a addictive read over the three books P.S nice description of the wedding and also those names were brilliant 👏
Overall this is a good story, but I did find it a bit repetitive and therefore predictable. I found our main character getting into the same kind of trouble, in the same kind of way, and escaping using the same method, almost every time. Ok here's the thing, on the one hand he is built up as the greatest wizard ever, yet he continues to struggle with magic. Yet, the quest he is on is a good on and difficulties should be encountered otherwise the reader would lose interest.
I really enjoyed this series! The world, the characters, the magic, the good versus evil and the amazing revelations near the end of it all added up to a wonderful read. I'm delighted there is a continuing series to read next!
I absolutely loved this story. It has very interesting characters, great storyline, great plots. They language is so vivid that I could almost to taste, smell, see every detail. I highly recommend it to you!!
Well written classic fantasy the storyline was a lot of fun the character development was great a lot of moments you were hanging on an edge wondering what more could go on and then more did really enjoyed this set
I felt the first two books in the trilogy were okay but really lost interest in the third. The characters along with the story seemed to fall apart. Also, throughout the third book I was constantly annoyed with inconsistencies in magic held vs magic consumed. The two main characters were supposed to be "special" yet they always seemed to be the weakest magic users despite their many sources of magic obtained in the two prior books. It wasn't helped by the introduction of another main character who seemed to have greater magical power which was constantly being used by the two main characters. If I had to pick something from the 3rd book that even made it worth the effort to continue reading it would be the inclusion of the dragons and the dragon egg. There integration into the story worked for me unfortunately the rest of the story didn't. If I had to rate each book, I would give the first two 3 stars and the last book 1.
