Ex-socialite and new widow Zoe Lane Hitchens isn't exactly sure how she's going to face NASCAR driver Will Branch. Ten years ago Zoe fell madly in love with Will and became pregnant with his child—but chose another man to share her life.
Will is totally focused on winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship this year…until he learns about the death of Zoe's husband. Suddenly his world shifts. He's once more in love, and astoundingly, father to a young boy. How can he possibly be a good parent to his newfound son…without sacrificing his dream?
A letter to Rod Stewart resulting in a Cinderella birthday for her daughter sowed the seeds of New York Times and USAToday bestselling author Jean Brashear's writing career. A lifelong avid reader, at the age of forty-five with no experience and no training, she decided to see if she could write a book. It was a wild leap that turned her whole life upside down, but she would tell you that though she's never been more terrified, she's never felt more exhilarated or more alive. She's an ardent proponent of not putting off your dreams until that elusive 'someday'—take that leap now.
Over fifty published novels later, the five-time RITA finalist and RTBookReviews Career Achievement Award winner has accumulated a whole passel of war stories to swap and loves nothing better than talking writing and books with readers and fellow writers.
And she'd still take that leap, war wounds and all.
I really enjoyed this one. It was a typical storyline I think. Boy meets girl, girl marries someone else (in this case, boy’s best friend), and then the rest of the book is about boy and girl trying to get back together again. But the great part is in the detail. It has a NASCAR setting, which is always a plus for me, but the pace, the dialog, and the characters were great. I think my favorite was Sam, the little boy, although the two main characters were well suited and had a great back and forth. I was honored when the author not only came by my blog, but left a comment. She told me she was working on a sequel involving the brother right now, and I can’t wait to read it!

Black Flag, White Lies by Jean Brashear Harlequin NASCAR Library NASCAR: Hidden Legacies Book 2 Playboy NASCAR twins, Will and Bart, had a tough year after their dads betrayal to his business and family, but they survived. Will’s dad had pushed him to give up someone special to him ten years ago and she ended up marrying his best friend. His life changes quickly when his best friend dies and the girl he once loved tells him that he has a son. At the young age of thirty he wasn’t quite ready to grow up yet. Can he?
Zoe Lane Hitchens had loved Will. When he chose racing over her she was devastated. When Will’s friend Tanner offered her marriage, security and to love her baby as her own, she took the deal. Only after the I do’s he became a different person, and not a good one. Will says he wants to be a father to Sam, but she can only think how he left her high and dry all those years ago. Can she ever trust the handsome hunk with her son’s life and her own?
The previous books in the Secrets and Legends series introduced the reader to the Branch’s. Hilton’s betrayal and the struggles it caused his wife and four children. Bart’s story is told much later in Right Before His Eyes: End Of The Line by Abby Gaines. The secrets continue in this series with Checkered Past where we meet another Matheson brother. Chad was first introduced in Back On Track. http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
This secret baby/second chances story takes place between the NASCAR banquet and the start of the next season. A driver with a bad boy streak and a checkered history discovers that his best friend lied to him and the child he thought was the outcome of his exgirlfriend's cheating with his bestie is actually his son but the ex thinks he abandoned her because he didn't want a baby and, now that the bestie's dead - probably a suicide - she's thinking any man older than her 9 year old son might not be worth the trouble. Brashear fills her story with all of the betrayal, mistaken assumptions and discoveries that are typical of secret baby stories and further complicates them by adding the divided focus and loyalties of a NASCAR star who knows that success directly depends on your next win. Black Flag, White Lies is set in a NASCAR world created for the now defunct Harlequin NASCAR series and is worth the read for NASCAR fans.
There were actually several things I really liked about the dynamic added witht he presence of Sam in this. There were definitely things that frustrated me nut there were also some surprising NASCAR Harlequin firsts (among what I've read) implied condom usage! (nevermind it was in the past) brief mention of religious services! direct mention of prayer!
Jean Brashear, you always come through. Up 'til now, my experiences with Nascar Romances have been disappointing to say the least, but you managed to bring just the right touch of humanity to a group of folks who too frequently come across as...well...rather unlikeable in their fictional forms.
