A Beach Wedding to Die For by Judy Moore is the second book in the Cozy Mysteries to Die For series and the third one that I have read by this author. All three novels are set in the same small Florida town of Manatee Beach. While one of them was not in the same series, there are some secondary characters who show up across all of them.
Beck O’Rourke co-owns Beach Reads bookstore and coffee shop with her grandmother. They live in the apartment above their store with Beck’s younger sister, Lizzie. Beck is a bridesmaid for the third time in a wedding for Amelia Warner. However, when both of her jilted-at-the-alter ex-grooms show up at her beach wedding to groom number three, there is bound to be lots of excitement. When someone dies, Beck is determined to track down the culprit. But she keeps going up against Manatee Beach Police Department Detective Devon Mathis.
Beck was definitely someone you wanted to succeed. This book showed some character growth. She also worked through an ethical dilemma. The secondary characters were well developed as well-rounded and enhanced the story as well as providing some humor.
The prose was compulsively readable, well-written, and engrossing. The plot was suspenseful, complex with plenty of suspects, and entertaining. The ending was a little unexpected with a nice twist. Will you guess the correct murderer?
Overall, this was an enjoyable, entertaining, and suspenseful read. Themes include murder, family dramas, secrets, parental favoritism, self-centeredness, romance, and much more. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. If the above sounds like something you would enjoy, then I recommend that you check it out.
Thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this novel and the opportunity to read and provide an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
Beck is back in this new cozy set in Manatee Beach, Florida. Beck has always wanted to be a police detective but is a bit shy when it comes to public speaking. Instead, she runs a book shop and cafe with her grandmother. Her sister, Lizzie, also lives with them but she is a lifeguard on the beach. And I can't forget to mention Cocquita, their Great Dane, that has a nose for who is good and who is not so nice.
The story opens and Beck has been roped into being a bridesmaid (yet again) for a childhood friend, Amelia. Now what is unusual is that this is Amelia's 3rd wedding in about 3 years. Don't get me wrong, she never actually married the guys in the first two weddings, she dumped them at the altar. So here she goes, perhaps 3rd time is the charm? All goes well until Amelia is stabbed at the wedding reception with the cake knife. The pool of suspects is not large and I have to admit, I really didn't know who to suspect so when the killer was revealed I was surprised. I suppose I shouldn't have been all things considered (motive etc) but it was a character that wasn't on my radar.
I enjoyed the story and following the clues to try and unearth the killer. As I said, I was surprised at the reveal but also what happened after that. I obviously am not going to tell you, you'll have to read the book to find out. Let's just say I thought it was a bit out of the ordinary.
I was happy to see that Beck and Devon were still trying to work out a relationship of some sort. I'm sure Beck's involvement did not make his job easier as the detective on the case. I have to admire that Devon kept his lips sealed when it came to information regarding the case, but that in turn made Beck dig her heels in and more determined to figure out who killed Amelia.
There are many light-hearted moments that made me laugh, especially with Jason, the best man. He is quite the flirt but Beck is having nothing to do with him....but it does make a certain police detective a bit jealous.
Overall, we give this book 4 paws up and can't wait until the next book is out in early 2021.
Judy Moore brings us back to Manatee Beach, Florida where Beck is now appearing for the third time as a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding. The friend, Amelia, is all things I love to "hate" in a character - selfish, spoiled and completely oblivious to other peoples feelings. Beck, Miss Alice and Lizzy are such likable characters and are all developing as these books continue. My personal opinion is Beck needs to get herself a private investigation license so she can fill her need to solve mysteries.
A smoothly paced well-crafted plot that had just enough twists to keep me questioning who could have done it, several suspects who all had motives and a surprising reveal that both shocked and saddened me made this a book that I couldn't put down.
A BEACH WEDDING TO DIE FOR is the second book in the Cozy Mysteries To Die For by Judy Moore. This delightful seaside mystery centers on a troublesome bride who has already left two jilted grooms at the altar and is walking down the aisle toward groom number three. Protagonist Beck O’Rourke is the bridesmaid, for the third time for the same bride, and is tasked with keeping the jealous ex-grooms from causing a scene at the wedding. I like Beck as the protagonist. She’s smart and methodical. While she may not want to get involved in unpleasant situations, she rises to the occasion and uses her wits and intelligence to get things done. The conflict starts from the very first which keeps the scenes flowing and when the bride is murdered, it doesn’t come as a surprise since practically everyone, except her mother, was angry with her.
Personally, I thought it was a stretch that as narcissistic as the bride was, both the jilted grooms continued to pine for her over the course of a couple of years. Plus, what parents in their right mind would practically bankrupt themselves for not one but three weddings for the same daughter in a short period of time when they had other children and grandchildren to be rightfully concerned about. However, I recognize this is fiction and setting that aside, the author does an admirable job laying the groundwork for lots of motives for the bride’s death. The clues are sprinkled throughout as Beck gets involved in the investigation. As a former wannabe detective, she uses what little training she went through to methodically ask questions and solve the murder. I had my suspicions about the culprit but once the final reveal came, holy moly, the conclusion knocked my socks off! Without giving away any spoilers, it varied from the usual cozy mystery formula and I was grateful for the treatment Ms. Moore provided for the situation.
I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the second book in the Beach Reads mystery series by Judy Moore.
This book really keeps you interested. I felt like I was a rabbit following after a dangling carrot as she led me around the story landscape.
I wasn’t even sure why Beck was friends with Amelia. Amelia was a real user. So it wasn’t surprising when this is the gal who ended up dead. She was walking down the isle at wedding number three. The first two attempts at marriage didn’t work out and Amelia left both her previous grooms standing at the alter. And for some reason, these two fools still thought she was their soulmate and wanted to date her. I guess they missed the whole “she is getting married today concept.” Groom number two was found holding the murder weapon (the knife used for cutting the cake) and the bride’s sister, Stephanie was lying unconscious next to her passed out.
Lots of motives here besides the love lost grooms. Amelia’s sister lost out on her children’s collage funds since it was so expensive for their parents to fund three complete weddings over the years. Stephanie was counting on those funds since she didn’t make a lot of money.
I waffled between one or two suspects throughout the book but I discovered that my first impression of the killer was the correct one.
I am definitely liking this series a lot. I wish there had been a little more connection between police detective, Devon Mathis and Beck. I think that would have given Beck more to focus on in between her sleuthing escapades.
Overall, it was one great read.
If you like cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
A Beach Wedding to Die For by Judy Moore is a wonderful read. I really enjoyed the first cozy in the series, A Book Signing to Die For because Moore had such fantastic character development and she continues to do so in this one too. We get to see more of Grandma Alice and Beck’s sister, Lizzie. Their dancing scenes at the wedding were a riot. And Moore does a fantastic job introducing new characters and making them really stand out. Moore really shines when it comes to her characters which is great since that’s why I, and so many others, keep coming back to a cozy mystery series.
And I have to applaud Moore for the way she handled the resolution with the killer. Although I was pretty sure who it was early on, the way the book concluded was not something that happens often in a cozy. Some people may not enjoy the ending, but I loved it. To me it’s another way that Moore’s writing stands out from the thousands of cozy mystery writers out there.
I highly recommend you take a trip to Manatee Beach in Florida and get to know Beck and the gang!
A Beach Wedding to Die for by Judy Moore a five-star read that will keep you guessing. This is fun and will keep you on the edge of your seat, I loved a book signing to die for, so was excited to get back to Manatee Beach, and well this one made me smile just as much. I get beck so much, the dresses, the bridzillas, the cake, hell I hate weddings so much I had three people at mine. The characters in this story are fab, they all have depth to them and make this a compelling story, each time you think you know someone, they do something that keeps you on your toes, honestly I don’t want to say anything about this story as I don’t want to give any hints to this story as it will blow you away.
Beck is a bridesmaid for the third time as her high school friend, Amelia, prepares to be married. The first two times, Amelia left the groom at the altar before they could get married. Everyone is anxiously waiting to see if Amelia will actually go through with things this time around. Both former grooms show up at the beach wedding watching from afar. Amelia goes through with the wedding and marries groom number three. At the wedding reception, the bride’s sister-in-law and the groom’s best man both have a bit too much to drink. Greta, the sister-in-law, lets it slip that Amelia can’t have children, something Amelia hadn’t told Charlie, her groom. Charlie is not happy with Amelia. When Amelia’s mother comes looking for her, she asks Amelia’s sister, Stephanie, to go find her. Amelia is found stabbed to death and Stephanie is laying unconscious next to her on the ground. Groom number two, Brick, is there trying to pull the knife out. Brick becomes a prime suspect, though groom number one, Arthur, should also be on this list. Beck is determined to do what she can to find the real killer. I enjoyed this book very much and the identity of the killer was definitely a surprise. There was some sadness to the end of the book, but I did enjoy seeing some progress made on Devon and Beck starting to date and become a couple. I love Miss Alice and Coquina the dog as well as the bookshop and the beach town where this book takes place. I look forward to reading more about Beck and her investigations!
A Beach Wedding To Die For (Cozy Mysteries To Die For Book 2) by Judy Moore
5 ++++++ Stars
I loved this book so so so much! I've said this before but Judy Moore is my go to for cozy mysteries. These characters, especially Scratchoff..Absolutely a favorite of mine. Beck is someone I want to be friends with, I want to rent a room at Beach Reads and be her BFF, LOL
I usually suspect I know who did what in these books, In more times than not I'm completely wrong but I always try. This author always messes with my head and once again I had no clue...I think it crossed my mind once but quickly dismissed itself and I was on a whole different track. Then that ending….it had me asking myself….What would I have done?
This author has such a way with weaving her words into a smooth flowing story, one that I never want to end. I love what is and even what isn't going on with Beck and Devon and I'm praying that there's a future book planned involving more of Lizzie and of course much more interaction between Scratchoff and Grammy.
You can absolutely read this as a standalone, but I'm so glad I didn't, there are a couple books I'd recommend reading before this one just to get everyone's history and why they are so special in this book!
I enjoy Judy Moore’s books because they always keep me guessing. This one is no exception. We go back to Manatee Beach, and the Beach Reads bookstore, owned by Beck O’Rourke and her Grammy. This is the second in the Cozy Mysteries to Die For series, and I loved bumping into characters I’ve met before. The story, though, is brand new. A highly-unlikeable bride is found stabbed—with the cake knife, no less—at her reception. Who could have done such a dastardly deed? One of her two previous fiancés, both of whom she left at the altar? A member of her family, which she treated badly? I won’t tell!
I have to say, I didn’t get even close to fingering the murderer on this one, till the very end. Along the way, I enjoyed Ms. Moore’s descriptions, and her depth of characterization. I enjoyed the inclusion of Beck O’Rourke’s Great Dane and the interplay between her and the love interest, Detective Devon Mathis.
Heroine Beck O’Rourke refers, during this story, to reading an Agatha Christie book. This mystery has many of the earmarks of Ms. Christie’s tales, with its good pace and clever plotting. A great book to curl up with at any time of year!
A Beach Wedding To Die For (Cozy Mysteries To Die For Book 2) by Judy Moore is a wonderful seaside mystery. When Beck is asked to be a bridesmaid for her old school friend, for the third time, she didn’t expect to put her newly found detective skills to use, trying to solve another murder. Beck is a tenacious and endearing character who easily gains the trust of the witnesses she speaks too but she doesn’t always like what she finds out. This is a lovely easy read book, I would recommend to lovers of the crime genre who are looking for a fun mystery without too much gore. I am, as always, looking forward to the next book in the series, I am still hoping that Beck gets her man in the form of the handsome detective Devon.
A thoroughly unlikable bride is murdered at her wedding reception. Beck is a bridesmaid in the wedding and one of the first on the scene. Putting her love of detective work to use she becomes immersed in the case. There are so many suspects including 2 jilted grooms. With an ending that is shocking and unheard of in the cozy world, this is a first-class read!
"A Beach Wedding To Die For" by Judy Moore is a fantastic read. I thoroughly enjoyed re-visiting Manatee Beach Florida and spending time with Beck, her grandmother, her sister and the other characters in the series as, once again, Beck plays detective, determined to figure out the identity of the killer.
This one kept me guessing. A suspense filled mystery with my new favorites sleuth trying to solve this who done it. Judy Moore has believable characters who have a real depth to them. A bride with three grooms, and Beck is right in the thick of it.
A delightful and entertaining cozy mystery. Will the third wedding make it to the I do? Many surprises. Interesting, charming, and not so charming characters. Didn't guess the victim nor the culprit. Love the dog. Thanks to the author for providing a copy for my voluntary review.
Wow!! I was totally hooked on this page-turner. There are plenty of murder suspects and each one had a stronger reason than the next. While I thought I knew who the killer was, the ending is a real shocker and left me thinking "WOW". Now I need Beck's next adventure immediately.
Wow another great one in this series - I guess you could call it a series. Full of action from the very beginning and stays that way all thru. Great cast of characters. Couldn't put it down.
This is the second book in this series. It can be read as a stand alone but I highly suggest reading the first book too. I enjoyed this one if not more than the first one. This is a well written story that has characters that not only make the story come to life but also so entertaining. I had no problems connecting with them. This is an engaging story that kept me turning pages to the end. Beck once again plays detective in this story. She has been a bridesmaid in two weddings where the bride has jilted the groom. Now she is up for a third wedding and has been tasked with keeping the two exes from making a scene. What will happen when the bride is murdered? This is a great who done it story. The mystery and twists and turns made the story easy to read and follow. The characters made you feel as if you were there with them. I highly recommend this book and this author.
I can always count on a fun adventure when I open a book by Judy Moore. This book is the second in her Cozy Mysteries To Die For series. I was excited to see what adventures our characters would take us on this time. This time we find Beck O’Rourke a bridesmaid in the questionable wedding of her best friend. This is the third time Beck finds herself in this situation with the same bride! She is tasked with keeping the ex’s calm and collected throughout the wedding. I loved how much I found myself giggling and enjoying this read. It is a thriller type mystery novel with plenty of intrigue to keep you guessing but it also reads light and airy and felt like a small getaway to Florida. I look forward to seeing what we will get next in the series!
A Beach Wedding To Die For by Judy Moore is the second book in the Cozy Mysteries To Die For series. This can be read as a stand-alone book and does not have to be read in order. It was great to be able to pick up this book and get back to the characters of Beck and her grandmother. They were such fun to read about in book 1 and just the same in this one. As with the first this is a great example of a whodunit story - it was fun trying to work out who I thought was the one! This book was well written and exciting to read. It won’t me guessing throughout and even then I didn’t see the ending coming. It is a brilliant book and one I would highly recommend!
A Beach Wedding To Die For by Judy Moore is just fantastic. The title says it all. Who wouldn't want to die for a beach wedding? Especially a Florida wedding at that. Join Beck as she does the only thing she knows best and that is how to find a murder. This novel is filed with all kinds of surprises and turns that keeps the reader engaged till the end of the novel. Judy Moore is a truly talented author and knows just how to spin a tale her readers will love.
The 2nd book in the series is full of the. Unique characters with Winnie being the main character along with her Grammy and sister, Lizzie. Of course there’s the dashing detective that provides the romantic tension. The cozy is full of realistic characters who react in truly normal was. Their behavior is not perfect but they feel authentic. There’s a great twist to the story that really was quite unexpected
This is a really quick read full of twists and turns! The bride had more detractors than friends with her self-centered personality. When she turns up dead there's a long list of suspects for bridesmaid Beck to run through. Gram and Lizzie are on hand to help while police detective Devon wishes they would all stand down. This is an engaging mystery with a most unexpected solution!
‘A Beach Wedding To Die For’, is the second book in author Judy Moore’s ‘Cozy Mysteries To Die For’ series, although each book can be read as a standalone story the main characters do crossover. Having read and enjoyed ‘A Book Signing To Die For’ previously I was looking forward to this next instalment and was not disappointed. Back with what feels like old friends, are main characters Beck O’Rourke, her grandmother, Miss Alice, and Beck’s younger sister and lifeguard Lizzie. Beck owns ‘Beach Reads’ a bookstore and coffee shop which is also a gathering place for locals and tourists. The story is set set near the ocean in Manatee Beach, Florida and the trio who also live above the bookshop have another mystery to solve, and this time the action is happening at a wedding on the beach. When Beck’s is asked to be a bridesmaid for an old school friend she does not think she will be using her new found detective skills but when the jilted grooms from the brides first two weddings show up at her beach wedding to her latest groom their will definitely be trouble. When a murder takes place amateur sleuth Beck’s investigates but she keeps “butting heads” with the very handsome Devon Mathis, a Manatee Beach Police Department detective. I was hooked from page one of this cozy mystery crime drama and found myself reading late into the night, always a sign of a great book for me. The storyline is fairly fast paced and flows well and the clear narrative makes it an easy read. The plot has plenty of twist and turns in it that it kept me guessing until the end. I felt completely immersed in this story as the author really makes the wonderful characters and the setting come alive. I love the mix of well defined, likeable and relatable characters in Beck’s, Lizzie and Miss Alice who along with Devon all add something different to the story. I enjoyed following Beck’s as she investigated the case and I thought ‘A Beach Wedding To Die For’ was a well written, enjoyable and engaging novel. I look forward to future books in this series.
JUDY MOORE REALLY KNOWS HOW TO STAGE AN ILL-FATED WEDDING
After reading and loving A BOOK SIGNING TO DIE FOR, I was thrilled when I saw Judy Moore had written this sequel (she promises there will be more). It was great to get back to Florida’s Manatee Beach and drop in on the ladies and proprietors of Beach Reads: Beck, Grammy, and Lizzie. Also back are the incorrigible but lovable Scratchoff McLean (making his third appearance in a Moore mystery) and hunky detective Devon Mathis.
When the story begins, Amelia—Beck’s best friend from high school—is about to take her third trip down the aisle after jilting her first two fiancés at the altar. As Amelia’s character hasn’t improved with age, Beck has agreed to buy a third bridesmaid dress more out of loyalty to Amelia’s sister Stephanie than to the bride. As Amelia’s adoring mother worshipfully helps her dress for the nuptials, the rest of the family seethes with resentment as Amelia’s weddings have drained the family’s finances.
While the attendance of Amelia’s current fiancé Charlie is a given, the presence of her two previous grooms is not. Both lovesick men are hanging around outside the hotel where the wedding is being held. Ex-football star Brick and bookish Arthur have nothing in common but their grief and undying love for Amelia. They just want to be where she is.
What could go wrong?
As usual, Moore’s plotting is impeccable and the dialogue is fresh and engaging. This is a wonderful read.
A Beach Wedding To Die For (Cozy Mysteries To Die For Book 2) By Judy Moore 5 out of 5 stars
I loved reading the book A Beach Wedding To Die For (Cozy Mysteries To Die For Book 2) by Judy Moore. It is a mystery story that pulled me in from the very beginning. Two jilted grooms show up for a bride’s next wedding. Trouble is unavoidable. Who will not be leaving the wedding alive? Read this book to find out. This is a story that had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. It has wonderful characters. I loved reading about Beck O’Rourke. She is intelligent, independent, and is ready to jump into action as a detective. I also loved Beck’s grandmother and her sister, Miss Alice, and Lizzie. They make up a family that owns and operates a bookstore, and they help and take care of each other. Then there is Detective Devon Mathis. He is handsome and is attracted to Beck. There are also other additional characters that I enjoyed reading about. All of them have their part to play. The author does a wonderful job of making all of the characters come alive on the pages. I felt like I was right there with them. Don’t miss out on a mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. I highly recommend reading this story.
A Beach Wedding To Die For is the second book in Judy Moore’s Cozy Mysteries To Die For series. It could be read as a stand-alone but does follow on from the events of the previous book. We catch up with Beck O’Rourke, who has started to get a bit of a reputation after solving a murder related to a book signing at her family shop. Beck is a bridesmaid at her friend Amelia’s third attempt at a wedding. With jilted ex-fiancés, bitter siblings and secrets being revealed, there’s plenty of drama. And, since it wouldn’t be much of a murder mystery otherwise, someone ends up on the wrong end of a cake knife. The standout characters for me are, naturally, Grammy and Coquina, Beck’s dog. Grammy’s liveliness (she OWNS the dance floor at the wedding!) often brought a smile to my face and Coquina is a great help as Beck tries to piece together what happened. If you’ve ever been exasperated by a wedding diva, this is the book for you! Or if, like me, you’re longing for the seaside on a cold autumn night. It’s a light, entertaining read that will get your brain working as you try to figure out whodunnit. For me, this is a five star book. I’m looking forward to reading more of the series!
