Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. You can rarely go wrong with a Kelly Thompson penned series. This repackaging is actually a couple of series put together. First the Generations one-shot is great. Then both Hawkeyes team up for the end of Kate's series in a really run and dramatic turn against Madame Masque. Then we switch to the latest incarnation of the West Coast Avengers for another team up of Hawkeyes along with Quentin Quire, Fuse, America Chavez and Gwenpool. Everything in here is lots of fun.

An absolute blast from start to finish. From the playful banter to the wacky action sequences, Thompson manages to create something special here. The two Hawkeyes bounce off each other wonderfully with their back and forth quips and have a natural chemistry which conveys their underlying mutual love and respect for each other. The West Coast team manage to slot in nicely around the titular duo, creating a team that, whilst imperfect in every way, also makes sense and works. For those who love Hawkeye, this is a must read, and for those who haven't dipped their toes into Hawkeye content before, this will make you a fan.

What’s better than Hawkeye? Two Hawkeyes!

This is an effective, entertaining combination of superheroics and humor, somewhere between the Fraction run and the TV show. The artwork is consistently polished, and the dialogue fresh and crisp.

Kate’s issues with Clint were stronger, and I especially liked Eden and that plot. However, Kate gets a little lost in the West Coast Avengers issues. I definitely want to see more from Thompson and these illustrators.

Honestly, this was pretty damn good. It brought back a lot of nostalgia from when I read this in middle school, so that was great. The art in this last book was incredible, I feel like the art just kept getting better throughout this series. ALSO, I have to talk about the beginning of the book because, OH MY GOD I love it so much. The idea of having future Kate Bishop meet past Clint Barton is amazing.

This was a lot of fun. I'd read "Generations" in a collection featuring the original Hawkeye. It's still hilarious.

Some of the characters who become West Coast Avengers iteration 2 are introduced in Kate Bishop's Hawkeye: Private Eye series. Again, reading it all in order made it all make so much more sense to me. Kate Bishop's main adversary seems to be Madame Masque, who has been holding a grudge for a long time. But there are other supervillains in Los Angeles, and Kate's father Derek, who isn't necessarily a supervillain, but is definitely a villain.

What also helped me to understand West Coast Avengers version 2 was that I started to read the "All-New X-Men" series recently, which introduced me to Quentin Quire as a student at Xavier's School, or whatever it's called this century. That made him make somewhat more sense. Somewhat. I'm still puzzled about Gwenpool. I mean, I know the Gwen Stacy story from Spider-Man, and I'm slightly familiar with the character Deadpool, more from seeing the first movie than reading very many comics with him in it. I guess she's a cross between them?

There's reality TV involved, which ended very, very badly for the last team that used that. Kate even gets a "Captain America Disapproves" phone call. Captain America was a main character in the events following that "very, very badly," also known as Marvel's Civil War. His disapproval is totally understandable, though it makes Kate feel bad.

At the start of this new WCA series, Kate has powerhouse and sometime Young Avenger America Chavez use her teleportation abilities to fetch Clint Barton to help with a land sharks issue. There are land sharks roaming the streets of Los Angeles, and Clint happened to be the superhero who answered Kate's phone call. So the "grizzled veteran" original Hawkeye joins this team of mostly newbie superheroes. Kate or the reality TV people or a narrator wonder whether his title on the team should be "babysitter," but he also acts as something of a teacher/mentor with the extremely green (in the sense of "inexperienced") superheroes. He does have those years of experience, some of it bitter, bitter experience, to draw on.

As is fitting for any version of the West Coast Avengers, things continue to be wacky. Because of course they would be.

This book concludes the 2017 Hawkeye series and begins the 2018 West Coast Avengers series.

In Hawkeye issue #13, Clint Barton returns but the series takes a slight downturn. First of all, I like Leonardo Romero's clean "European-style" art, but for some reason he draws Clint to look the same age as Kate (20 something), and that really annoys me. Second, the story is more fantastic (involving time travel) and apparently expects some background knowledge of the Secret Empire event. Despite these two negatives, Hawkeye & Hawkeye together still make a great team, and the conclusion on the series is worth reading.

West Coast Avengers, however, is skippable. Kelly Thompson writes fun and sassy dialogue and Stefano Caselli draws Clint to be of correct age, but that's about it. The new WCA are a crazy bunch composed of two Hawkeyes, Gwenpool, Quentin Quire, America Chavez and some guy named Fuse. You need to have followed Marvel in 2010s closely to know who these kids are. If you are not already a fan of some of them, this series is not likely to make you one. Although some lines made me smile, I am not eager to find out how the story of the new WCA continues.

West Coast Avengers: 2.5 stars

So, this book mostly contains volume 3 of Hawkeye: Kate Bishop, which I already read on its own. BUT, it also contains the first 4 issues of West Coast Avengers, which I didn’t yet read, so that’s all I’ll be reviewing.

Anyway, I gotta read Kelly Thompson’s West Coast Avengers, the continuation of her Kate Bishop story that has now culminated in Kate forming her own superhero team to protect L.A. against a familiarly unfamiliar foe, along with other threats of both land and shark variety. As usual, Kate’s managed to whip together a fun little group that she can kinda call a “team”, and together they may actually save Venice Beach, or destroy it, idk man. It’s a whole lotta fun and I just wanna keep reading!

I aim to please.
Never gonna grow tired of this combo. I think Hawkeye (both of them) are up there in terms of favourite Avengers/Marvel characters. This graphic novel combines the last volume of Kate's solo run and the first of the New West Coast Avengers. Prefer the WCA art (Clint? Oof, we love.). Story-wise, I believe the first part to be slightly stronger (the best sharpshooters in the universe teaming up against Hawkeyes, Kate's rivalry with Madamme Masque). Nevertheless, very enjoyable, all the humour I expect from this team up with some heart felt emotion. Gotta love.

Some of the best Kate Bishop-Clint Barton content out there — the first graphic novel I picked up for Kate outside of the Young Avengers and it does not disappoint. One of my favorite graphic novels of all time, I find myself coming back to it again and again. A perfect comfort read, and a wonderful pairing with Private Eye by Kelly Thompson as well (this is a continuation of the Hawkeye (2016) comic run collected in that GN)

So much better than the show! They actually have inside jokes and playful banter. I can see why they teamed up. This comic takes place in LA instead of NYC. There were very LA moments: traffic, Hollywood, random happenings. It is best if I let you read the comic yourself. Be ready for the mini twists. Also, be ready for the difference between series and comics.

It was funny like when Quentin Quire and Gwendolyn Poole kiss because America Chavez and Johnny Watts were scarred. It was also funny when Kate said Clint was gay

Kate's and previous-timeline-Clint's interactions in the "Generations: Hawkeye & Hawkeye" part of this collection are cute, but I found the plot (teleported bad guys on the hunt) underwhelming.
The Hawkeye #13-16 part picks up where Private Eye left off but also incorporates a character (troublemaker) from the "Generations" story. It has its moments.
The West Coast Avengers #1-4 part tried my patience a little bit, then had me giving in with a smile to its large-scale silliness. The ragtag teammates' interactions and comments during the reality show bits triggered snickers. The B.R.O.D.O.K. thing is priceless, especially in terms of art.
Varying art styles, and I like Romero's and Caselli's more than Raffaele's.

This book is split in to two halves - the end of Thompson’s stellar Hawkeye run and the start of the West Coast Avengers run.
The good - Kate’s story in her solo wraps up nicely, albeit too short of a run, and the art is excellent. Thompson’s run on Kate Bishop Hawkeye was near perfect and is very missed.
Her West Coast Avengers? Some of my least favourite comics of her writing. It could just be more but I do not enjoy when ‘street level’ heroes fight off big bads that are, in this case, larger than life. The interactions are a mixed bag of fun and dull. It’s odd for me as Thompson normally knocks it out of the park.

I hadn't planned on reading this entire run from Kelly Thompson all together but it looks I will now!

It's been so much fun and I love that she used the Generations issue as an extra issue of the run rather than a side story. I've really enjoyed the artwork throughout, even with the changes, and the balance of drama, humour and action has been just right.

I’m definitely hooked. I love Kate so much. I loved having her and Clint team up again and I loved the continuation of Kate’s story and the family reveals.
This volume also includes 1-4 of West Coast Avengers which kind of seems odd to me seeing as the next in the series is 1-6 of West Coast Avengers. I’m also not loving their dynamics just yet.

I wasn’t a big fan.. it was okay though. I thought that the villain getting mad at the other villain and then just walking out and not putting up a fight was pretty funny. I probably wouldn’t read it again but I wouldn’t be in particular agony if I had to.
