Knight-Incantor Xandria Azurebolt and her Sacrosanct Chamber warriors from the Hammers of Sigmar have been sent to the Realm of Death, Shyish.
Their task is to prevent the Nighthaunts from retrieving a deadly magical weapon in the name of their cruel god, Nagash. If they are to retrieve that which they seek, Xandria and her allies must journey into the haunted, war-ridden wilds of Lyria and content with an army of murderous gheists.
Written as an exclusive novella for the Mortal Realms Partworks Magazine.
As the first book in the trilogy is so short at just over 100 pages, I didn’t go into it expecting to be blown away by world-building, however as a fan of the Age of Sigmar universe this still left a lot to be desired! I did enjoy the nods to the troops and units that we have come to know though a complete lack of character or personality, and at times seemingly contradicting what little character was displayed, meant that I found the seemingly endless narrative a real chore to get through. A great concept, but the end product left a bitter taste, i can only hope that the sequel improves upon this opening foray.
Clatters along at peace, moving quickly from city to village to tomb. All the Age of Sigmar staples are here and it's better for them. The story and writing don't ask much of the reader. Tom Horth has a breezy style of writing and I look forward to longer novels from him.
