In this thoughtful and important book, Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi examines the worldwide revival of interest in Islam and attempts to explain why this interest has led so many among the younger generation of Muslims to tread the path of intolerance and rigid interpretation. An older and more experienced voice, he articulates the wisdom brought on by maturity, sound scholarship, and a deep understanding of both the letter and the spirit of the Qur an and the Sunnah. Looking for answers in a world marked by enormous volatility, pressure and political and economic corruption, Muslim youth are an easy target for extremist movements. Shaykh Qaradawi traces the complex roots of these views, and examines in-depth the many uses of the path to intolerance, offering a variety of remedies and cures. Perhaps more relevant today, given our troubled climate, than at any time in the past, the work introduces readers to a subject of great significance and wide ramifications.

SUPERB. This is the first book of Shiekh Al Qaradawi I ever read and feels like I wanna read more. The best ever. I recommend every Muslim youth to read this. Indeed, this is for the youth to stay hold to their duty for their religion. To stay on on the path of moderation.
Very rational. What I so appreciate in him is the way he adress the issues. Very open-minded with a keen understanding of the youths. Also, he never loath or condemn the extremism. Instead, he provided cause-effect and solution.
In this thoughtful work, Yusuf al Qaradawi addresses many of the issues of what most Muslims, especially the youth (in their vulnerable years in studying their religion to solidify their purpose and identity) encounter within themselves, the Islamic tradition, and the communities that they belong to.
While inevitable inner and environmental conflicts occur, for example the tendency to establish certainty in matters of religious belief and practices some eager young Muslims resort to extreme and rigid views and lifestyle and want to impose it in a radical manner to others, while some who may find some interpretations of the religion to be incompatible to their lifestyle or perceived reality and orientation might choose to abandon it altogether.
Dr. Qaradawi gives fatherly advice to young Muslims to the true essence of Islam by drawing examples from how the Prophet (pbuh) dealt with matters that required tact and wisdom, as well as examples from his Companions of how they resolved differences and made decisions that are based on sound judgment and in accordance to the noble principles of Islam. Also included were situational examples of how conflicts among Muslims occurred over trivial matters which are the result of differences that should have been overlooked if those involved understood the essence of flexibility, respect and tolerance in Islam.
This is a must read and timely treatise (even though it was written many years ago) for the Muslim youth who are striving to balance worldly pursuits, faith, and religious endeavors in advocacy for beneficial change.
What a groundbreaking pieces. In real world, dealing with this two things is a norm, and it's never being an easy thing to do. To be in between total rejection and extremism requires us to have a really profound knowledge and correct insight on the issues.
This book tells us about making choice accordingly. While the title itself talks about two options, the author brings us to another dimension of choice- by being wusto (moderate) . Being moderate, in many circumstances, is not an easy thing to do. Concerning to this, we must always be fair to ourseleves and to others who are involved. Being fair means placing something on its right place, and perspective, and to have this, again, we need knowledge, sound and authentic one.
By and large, I'm intellectually satisfied upon reading book and it helps me to open wide the horizon of my thinking about Islam. I always think that Islam is so wide, still, regardless of how wide I think of it, it is always wider and broader. There's always new aspect/discipline of life that Islam has provided with lessons and solutions.
I thought this was a good balanced book that didn't just place blame on the so-called extremists but acknowledged that a lot of the problems going on in the Muslim world are due to corrupt leaders who imprison those who don't twist Islam to fit the leaders' whims. I thought that there were a lot of good tips here on how we should fix what we can now instead of waiting for a true Islamic leader to come to power. I don't think this is a good book for someone new to Islam because it makes mention quite about of fiqh issues and although there are footnotes, it wouldn't help much if you don't have a general knowledge of what fiqh is. One thing I didn't like was that in parts the book was written as though the reader is the average Muslim and other parts it's written as though a scholar is the intended reader. I found the parts that focused on fiqh issues to be more difficult to read and had to re-read several paragraphs because it went over my head the first read.
Fantastic book MashaAllah. This book explains briefly about the origins of extremists, how they behave and why they behave. It also tries to explain why their logics are shallow and void their quoted Ayah and Hadith with a better explanation. Must read.
Amazing read! Shaykh Qaradawi traces the complex roots of extremism and intolerance among the youth today, providing practical remedies and cures. Very relevant in our time
