Where do I even begin? I am the CEO and co-Founder of Baalm (www.thebaalm.com), a retail company changing the culture of beauty through community. I am a scientist, writer and entrepreneur passionate about skin tech. I started Baalm after struggling to find the right skin care products for my eczema and sensitive skin. I have a bachelor’s degree in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology from Harvard and a master’s degree in Nutrition from Columbia. Lately I’ve been exploring ceramics, and making some kiln-worthy vases, bowls and paper-weights.
I was not sure whether to give 3 or 4 stars to this book, because I have mixed feelings about it. When I first started reading it, I got frustrated: there was a lot of information about ingredients and zero links for research that proves their effectiveness, plus some sections were so short they reminded me of Twitter threads. I had to put the book aside for a couple of weeks because of that initial impression. When I came back to it, however, I was happy to find the section with routines for every life situation and skin condition, and this was honestly something I've been looking for and couldn't find. As always, all the recommendations from the book have to be taken with a grain of salt: I'm personally not a fan of home-made masks and would not use some of the suggested ingredients, but overall it's a good start for someone who wants to start building their skincare routine. Extra kudos for not naming specific products: this helped me get through the book before buying anything :) I will definitely come back to this book many times to check the routines when I need them.
I really liked this book, it was informative and entertaining without being patronising or trying to sell awful products. It was a good book for those who are new to skincare, and I found the routines at the end of the book quite useful, and covered a number of different scenarios, including date nights, flights, for acne beating, dehydrated skin etc. The bit I didn't like was the lack of pictures and instructions on the massaging techniques, as I know you can do more damage than good in some cases. Further, the lack of scientific basis for some of the "clinically proven" claims was a bit annoying. However, I've read enough skin care books to know what ingredients work and why. However, if you are a complete beginner, it would be useful to add this information in.
This book reads more like a guide for someone very new to skincare, like maybe 6th grade? Also the author claims to be a science writer but doesn't cite any of her sources anywhere. If you use the phrase "clinically proven" you need to cite a source.
This is a great, basic read. Its strength is that it is a quick-reference text that compiles info into one place that I often find myself googling. If readers want something more in-depth, they can read beyond this text. It’s not trying to be something it isn’t. If you are new to skincare or - like me - had some shifts recently that resulted in what feels like completely new skin with different needs, this is a helpful book.
Fresh Face is a beautifully illustrated simple book about skincare. There are many accessible routines and DIY masks to use. Another plus all skin types are considered. I think a section on the use of makeup on skincare and a detailed index on the many types of ingredients would have been helpful.
This book is good for beginners who start exploring in skin care. It is good for learn on short to the point of how we do step in different skins.I recommend that it is good for teenagers reader .
This is the book on skincare you would’ve got when you turn 13. Great -brief- overviews of all things skincare & some ‘why does this happen’s included. Some of the new popular types of care items / ingredients may push this book to the antiquated section faster than not. Also, as a note to the author: If you have to preface advice with “You don’t need me to tell you this”, then we don’t need you to tell us it (and that was in the book multiple times). Adding ‘Ages 13+’ on the cover would’ve solved a lot of your 3 star reviews as that is who’s expectations are met in this book.
Not as complete as Hirons' Skin Care. The reader either needed to do additional research or have previous knowledge to get the most out of this book. I did like that it was broken into multiple routines; though without having a firm understanding of skin issues, care ingredients, etc. choosing which routines to use could be less efficient.
As others have commented in reviews, the lack of explanation and citation was disappointing.
Lovely packaging, would have benefitted from functional pictures/illustrations as well.
What a fun read to learn more about a part of your body that is so very important! I learned a lot even though it was a ton of information… I do wish there would have been more explaining because I do have a lot of questions but I’m sure it would have been hard to fit everything into one book :)
Nice approach to get healthy skin based on the day to day skin condition. I love how this book explained about focusing on your gut health bacteria instead of giving examples of products and brands.
I felt like the tone of the book laid it on a little thick in areas, but I suppose it's to fluff out the book in more informal sections. I actually agree with link between skincare/self-care and mental health, I find that it is often a high point of looking after myself. I appreciate the science of skin layers, knowing why things happen helps in knowing how to combat it. I feel like the science wasn't overwhelming and was written in an accessible way. I liked it bringing up lifestyle choices that affect skin, including saying you shouldn't give up carbs, and fats. I enjoyed the fact that it focused on ingredients, not products or brands. But I wouldn't say that I learnt anything new, but it's a good start for other people. Other things I appreciate are that it says longevity over anti-aging, includes a section on stress, diet and sleep, and the inclusion of bath mix recipes. I think I would have liked some info on body skincare. A few quotes I liked were:
"We know our bodies and skin best."
"Eating for your skin should be inspired by the foods you love."
"Food is medicine, but if you don't enjoy it , it can be more like cough syrup than a healing aid."
