Harry Bauer is a professional assassin. He is employed by Cobra, a shadow agency that provides certain, select Western governments with total deniability, while taking out the trash. Bauer is very good at what he does. In fact, he’s the best.

So when the brigadier, his overall boss, tells Bauer to go to Canada, pick up a woman and escort her to DC, he is understandably pissed: He eliminates bad guys, he’s not a nursemaid.

But when a few hours into the job the CIA send a highly professional hit squad to take out his charge, Diana, Harry begins to realize there is more to the job than babysitting. And when every attempt to get information about her is stonewalled, both by Diana and Cobra, he knows he has been put in the middle of something big, and dark.

It was supposed to be a simple escort, Calgary to DC, but it ends up taking Bauer and Diana across the Atlantic to the Azores, to Cadiz and beyond, before he discovers the terrifying truth, and does what he has to do, what he does best…

Take out the trash.

Typical Harry Bauer thriller. High body count.

Harry is tasked to escort a woman from Calgary, Canada to Washington D.C. And, as is normal for a Bauer novel, nothing is as it seems.

Quick read at under 200 pages, and a lot of that is skim over paragraphs.

Quantum Kill

The story was well written except for one part where the hero was wounded and continued on with no further mention of it or how he continued fighting with one fully useful arm. But it definitely had an unforeseen twist near the end. Looking forward to Cobra book 5 in Feb. 2021.

Do y’all know what a MacGuffin is? It’s a trope that’s been around for a while, is frequently misused, and is a thing of beauty when done right. I always think “Alfred Hitchcock” when I hear the word but it was actually invented by screenwriter, Angus MacPhail…and isn’t that a cool name? Anyway, a MacGuffin is a person, place, thing, or an event that moves along the story, scene or act without having itself any intrinsic value. The statue of the Maltese falcon or the briefcase in Pulp Fiction are MacGuffins. The ring from the Ring Trilogy or the Ark of the Covenant in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark are not. R2D2 and C-3PO are not. Simply put, a MacGuffin is a plot motivator that tends to drive characters’ objectives or rationale. Here’s the sticking point, at least in this story: usually the MacGuffin is something about which the characters care deeply…BUT…the reader generally does not and remains unaffected.

So…in this story there is something called an NPP about which all the characters care, the reader not so much EXCEPT that the writer attempts to make us care with sometimes confusing and often banal dialog pointing to how important and yet disruptive this NPP could be…if indeed it exists at all.

IMHO, this NPP is a MacGuffin because the reader doesn't need to care about it one way or another. At least not in its current form. It does however give Harry Bauer the perfect excuse (if he needs one) to take out a whole lot of bad guys and in particular it gives him a reason for killing some quasi-innocent scientists (not without some inner dialog, of course). I have to say Mr. Banner’s MacGuffin is a good one.

Each book, so far, has had a concept to proffer; in this case, it’s nanotechnology. Think the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu; reverse engineer the robot policeman who dissolves into parts and ultimately has his way with our world; that is a product of nanotechnology Hollywood style.

The recurring theme in this book is power; violence is a commodity…and the credible threat of violence is the source of all power. Harry Bauer says this to the client he is escorting to Washington DC from Calgary, Alberta. Diana-Helen-etcetera is the client whose many names almost require a scorecard to keep track of.

Diana-Helen-etcetera strains credulity. She is the self-defined empirical scientist without emotion but who has a hair-trigger from time to time, no more so than when told of an apparent science hack who has copied her work. She goes ballistic then, as she has often enough to be truly passive-aggressive. She’s often tedious, boring, and dull.

Some old friends and enemies are back:
Mohammed ben Amini just will not stay gone. Even his memory has bite.
Colonel Jane is back in all her obfuscating glory. She herself could be a MacGuffin, like Hamlet’s ghost. In chapter 20, there is an unbelievable scene with Bauer that is so puzzling that I had to shrug and pretty much ignore it and move on. There was no need for it; it did not help the plot. It appeared to have been sanctioned if not engineered by the brigadier, but again not to any purpose. Bauer did not need it. His heart certainly was not involved and definitely did not need protecting. It remains a head scratcher. I don’t generally catch this writer just filling pages to lengthen a book, but this scene sure seems as if.
Brigadier Byrd is as unflappable as ever and still has friends to spare on whom to call for this and that, “this and that” includes weaponry, means of transport, additional players, whatever is needed.

I like that the story takes COVID-19 into account; there is a brief nod to mask wearing. Somehow this is comforting. Too many recent books ignore the COVID phenomenon and just carry on.

There is that wicked humor evident in all his books. Not obvious, a little sly, and always welcome. For instance, Harry Bauer is about to kill and notes the surrounding groves of olive and oak trees, the mountain ranges and the buccal countryside. He sees a disused railway and states, “I could feel my Namastes curling just thinking about it.”

There are some errors. For instance, Harry Bauer, Colonel Jane, and Helen-Diana-etcetera are eating breakfast and discussing the upcoming mayhem. Suddenly, in the middle of the conversation, “The captain shook her head…” while Bauer was speaking. Where did she come from? Or should that have been the colonel whose head was shaking?
Also, Harry gets burgers at Tim Hortons which are all over Canada and have the best coffee ever and lots of tasty donuts: no hamburgers. However, Tim Hortons is often paired with a Wendys nearby, so I wonder if he got the burgers from Wendys? Gotta wonder, single, double or triple?

Not really an error, but I wonder about Bauer’s transport choices. Why drive when the brigadier can have a private jet made available so readily? And what a roundabout trip, sailing on the way to Washington DC. I get why it was done: if the logical jet had been taken, the story would have been over easily in under 50 pages. And where would the death and destruction have gone?

This book leaves me lukewarm. The plot was distinct (despite unusual travel choices), but the characters were either front and center action dolls or were wandering around getting in the way of the nice scenery. It was still padded with lots of activity and massive takedowns but conversations were stilted or like lectures and discourses, interesting at times but not remarkable…and not particularly illuminating. I am disappointed in the way these characters were moved around as if on a checkerboard without deference to their individual attributes and qualities. I rated it 3½ stars, rounding up to 4 stars because I do like this writer’s style a lot.

Choice and Consequences

Harry Bauer has chosen to remain a part of Cobra. Or, perhaps, he has simply not pursued his decision to retire - which, in and if itself is an inactive choice. At any rate, Harry's next assignment is somewhat out of th he norm. The Colonel and Brigadier want Harry to escort an asset from Canada to DC.. Using your # 1 killing machine as a taxi service does not sit well with Harry Bauer! Meeting her and having no information on the usefulness or background of the woman only serve to complicate matters. She is not communicating with Harry or being at all helpful. Add to that the continued attempts on Diana's life and Harry realizes there is more to this "Nurse maid" assignment.

Dianna, if that is even her name, is not helpful until repeated attempts on her life force her to trust Harry. Running from multiple assassins across numerous countries, complicated the mission. When a weary Harry finally arrives back in DC with his charge he is exhausted and glad to be rid of the burden. All to quickly, he finds that the mission us not complete and both he and the woman are off to spell image everyone involved in her prior career.

But, who is Diana; and just what game us she really playing? Will Harry survive long enough to solve the puzzle ?

008 v. 4

Another pages turned by Blake Banner. Again, much like a James Bond adventure, which Banner freely admits to many times. However, Banner uses current issues and asks questions such as, "What is power?" "What are nanoparticles?" (Although he does not specifically talk about lipid-nanoparticles and mRNA.). "Can nanoparticles be manipulated to make something from nothing?" (Researchers think so.). In other words, it's a Bond novel that makes you think , and then research, current trends and ideas. His solution suggests that killing the researchers is a way to control misuse of the technology. I wonder if that works? In the short run, its no problem at all. In the long run, it's a HUGE problem. Of course there is the love life of an emotionless assassin. How can that work? (It doesn't.) Overall a good story of real people who search for power. Are they the bad guys or is an assassin just as bad? These are questions Banner nor I will attempt to answer.

Harry Bauer keeps saying he wants to quit his job as an assassin at Cobra, but they keep asking him to do one more job. This time it's a job as a bodyguard transporting a woman from rural western Canada to Washington, DC. Harry doesn't like it, but he agrees to do it.

By the way, Cobra may or may not actually exist, officially. We don't really know. It may be part of the US Government or it may not be, at least officially. We don't really know. Harry Bauer doesn't really know, because Harry and his cohorts at Cobra sometimes run afoul of the CIA and/or other US Government agencies.

Anyway, the action is fast-paced, and it's very easy to get involved and anxious to see what happens next. It's always interesting to see who Harry kills next. He may have set a record for number of kills in one story with Quantum Kill. Apt title.

Blake Banner is an effective writer who spins a good yarn. His writing is spot on, and it keeps the reader engaged. Quantum Kill is no exception. It's #4 in the Harry Bauer series, and I'll be starting #5 very shortly.

Mixed reviews on this book. I like some of the dialog and that it is current on events like Vivid.

On the other hand Harry is a killing machine and it seems to be repetitive.

The story is getting a person from Canada to DC. Interesting. Harry chooses to drive and no reason given. With all the resources why not a private jet? Odd

I enjoyed the details of the travel. One item seemed wrong. Twice he stops at a Tim Horton's. These are all over Canada and are great. But at both he gets burgers. Tim's is a coffee and donut place. They have breakfast and lunch sandwiches. I have not seen one with burgers....odd but I could be wrong.

Harry Bauer was kinda funny braindead amusement. While being an unstoppable train of destruction the fact he gets played by every woman he meets was a good gimmick. This episode made me aware of the fact it was unintentional. The antagonistic play between his female handler should have been kept up, big mistake nr 1 to make her another swooning admirer. 2, the sidestep of the first real moral quandary in this book/series for the protagonist by making the female protagonist a sociopath was a real let down. In general a lot of the exposition is cringe conspiracy bullshit.
Overestimated the author. Dropped.

Quantum Kill. Blake Banner

Harry Bauer ex SAS, a highly intelligent operative and assassin. Some would think he has no conscious or morals. Actually, he does. He has a very unique trait or ability. He gets the job done. A brilliant female dentist has developed a nano technology that can save the world or destroy it. In the wrong persons hands, money and power will decide it's fate. It has to be destroyed along with everyone who is associated with it. Harry is the man for the job. Extremely fast paced action thriller and betrayal at its finest. Enjoyed immensely!!

The concept of NPP was nanotechnology was good and I appreciate that the author didn't go into details of the technology just to show off that he's done the research. He explained it in the simplest of the manners. However, a book is not just about concept or an idea. The incidents, the characters, the storytelling, all these combined make into a good book. The author seems to be rushing through the story all the time. I understand that the author is running 3 series in parallel and releases a book every month. So he's to compromise with the story sometimes.

Wow!

Thoroughly enjoyable! I’ve read several books written by Blake Banner (about 14-15 of the Dead Cold series), but this was the best read so far. I think I spent about one-third of my reading time looking at the map application on my phone trying to figure out where all these towns were located - I had no idea that Cadiz, Spain was on the Atlantic Ocean! Nevertheless, I read this very quickly - at all times completely engrossed with the story. I guess I gotta read some more Harry Bauer books!

Good fast moving story.

Good storyline with Harry escorting female scientist initially to the USA with research that she stole from her employers. In addition to the employers and criminals trying to recover the stolen research Harry has to keep her alive as well as himself. In addition he has to destroy the laboratory the research was worked on. All in all fast moving storyline across various countries.

Great Mystery Series

I read a lot of mysteries and love trying to figure out the endings. Blake Banner is an excellent writer, at least for someone like me who loves the action. In book 4 of this series, I especially liked the banter between Harry and Helen. And, I liked the bits of humor throughout the book.
I highly recommend this to anyone as a stand alone, or as a part of a series. Looking forward to book 5!

The COVID Pandemic Is The Best Piece Of Social Engineering

So far, all of my ratings for this series, have been 5 stars...Harry Bauer continues to keep the reader guessing: "who all will have to die?" As always, he gets the job done, but he doesn't always think it's okay...He seems to have the ability as to how to analyze his bosses, his women, and his enemies! The ending, again surprised me.

So far so good

It is clear the character Harry for all he knows and can do he has serious woman issues not sure if this is a manifestation from the authors own life but I would not be surprised.
Anyway for a good read series this is it. Reminds me a bit of tanner from remington kane and Mitch Rapp from Vince Flynn with a little Dewey Andrews mixed in.

The Long Dance

Nearly half way through the series. I still enjoy the plots but the hook is the humour, very Bond in character, and the stretched tango of flirting which covers the yet to be consumated love story. The final revelation of the psychopath was neat if somewhat obvious but nicely phrased and climaxed. Still reading, still enjoying, still recommending.

Another action packed book from this series and boy all those explosions and gun fights are awesome and especially bauer's combat ability is too good. As the title suggested this went deep in physics, which I don't know how many can make meaning out of. Apart from that, this book is a true Harry Bauer book as we seen in the past 3 books

Quantum Kill

MAN OH MAN!!!! Decidely, the most horrible things had to happen within this story! I loved reading it. But, I cried at the end. ALL good things must come to an end! Fortunately, for the whole world to get to keep moving forward all bad things must end as well! Very interesting and exciting story!

What an exciting ride

Excellent book. Non stop twists and turns. How does Banner do it!!!! I am hooked. The descriptions of places Harry travels, the description of the area makes you feel you are there with Harry.
Great read and fun. Can not put this series down. Thank you Mr. Banner.

Harry Bauer, focus, think fast, act quickly

No doubt that storyteller Blake Banner is a master craftsman. Characters with flaws, warped ethics, warped visions, self-interest, selfish intent and gripping power populate his worlds and threaten ours. Here's hoping he doesn't inspire the bad guys!

Possibilities

It was an exciting, thrilling read. Very fast paced. At every twist and turn it was evocative snd grabbed the reader and didn’t let go. There was a lot if killing in this book but each killing was justified. Threader just has to have the stomach fir it and not everyone does. But for me I enjoyed it.

Wow¡!!!!!

I have stopped just before starting book 5. I really liked book 4! I liked that finally Harry Jane and "bob" started to be human! I like Harry's toughness and his usual attempts to blow everything up.
What I don't like is descriptions of places that I can't spell let alone try to put them in my head as beautiful places ruined by evil and greed.

A killer of a book!

I liked the progression of this story; it transitioned nicely from moment to moment. The ending was a bit of a surprise. I like how Harry is a bit indestructable; not quite like another character that got me started on these action characters; but he manages to walk away.

Must read!!

I love this series. The main character Harry Bauer is a ruthless assassin but he’s so like able you find yourself rooting for him and ignore the amount of people he kills. The story line is fast paced with twists and turns. Banner’s writing style is top notch and just very entertaining.

If you like your heroes rough and your plots polished, Harry Bauer and the Cobra series are made to order for you. Harry is James Bond without the finishing school and the gadgets. Conceived well, written even better.

Too long

I found this book rambled, went too many places unnecessarily. I liked the quantum physics angle. The Helen character was unrealistic and Harry’s decision to meet Omar on the open sea was asinine. Not his best.
