Not often does a book capture and keep my attention from the 1st page, but the Oremere Chronicles did just that! I think I've found a new author to add to my top 10 favorite authors list. Really great read and although its fantasy it had a bit of real life problems added to the bunch. Loved it!👏👏👏👏👏👓📚⭐⭐🖖

Alternate Universe/Magic & Gifted Individuals/Multi PoV

SYNOPSIS (of Trilogy): This is not a romance but is a fantasy set in a world where there are people with magic and people with “gifts” (the Ashai) such as seers and energy workers as well as those with neither. It is a “Realm” broken into 5 regions separated by seas but the focus is on 4 of those regions each being very different in geography and weather and each having its own king. Whilst the story focuses most on Bleak, a young alcoholic Ashai with the power to mind read, it is also told from the perspective of 3 other main characters: Henri who is the leader of the Valian race which is a race of females based heavily on the Amazons; Swinton who is the Commander of the King of Ellesmere’s guards; & Dash who is a 10 year old stable boy. The basic story is around how a single Ashai, Ines, destroyed one of the regions, Oremere, and is in the process of bringing under her control the entire Realm through their ability to “collect” powers from other Ashai and influence others. The story is told through the view of the 4 main protagonists and how they and others fight back against Ines’ tyranny.

There is no heat or romance in this story it is pure fantasy and revolves around Ines taking the powers of all the Ashai that she can and using that power to subjugate all the regions in the Realm and bring everyone under her control. There is some violence throughout the Trilogy with a few fight and battles scenes where the author goes into detail as well as some descriptions of the violence and torture that Ines and her supporters bring on the Ashai. These are not over the top but some of the battle scenes are a bit graphic.
The story is well written and arcs over 3 Books. The 4th is merely a collection of “prequel” chapters relating to various characters and situations in the Trilogy but which, in my view, does not really add much to the Trilogy. The author does a good job of creating a strong story told from the viewpoint of the 4 main characters and what happens to them which arcs over 3 Books with multiple sub-plots. The narrative is woven well and contains sufficient action and drama to keep what is a lengthy trilogy moving and the reader engaged. The author does a good job of painting a detailed picture of a new world with its own issues, politics and races and pulling you into it.

Ultimately this trilogy fell down for me because I found it hard to engage and sympathise with Bleak, really hated Swinton but quite liked Dash and Henri who needed stronger roles. When you first meet Bleak she is described as a pitiful and not very bright orphan happy to spend her time at the bottom of a bottle whilst sailing around trying to find someone who can rid her of her power. Later in the Trilogy the author seems to try and turn her into some type of saviour but, in my view, it just didn’t work. Although the author tries to paint this picture of Bleak ultimately evolving into some uber powerful Ashai who is mysterious and all knowing it just doesn’t ring true as there is no evidence to support the evolution in Bleak’s character. Bleak’s powers grow sporadically and are actually all over the place sometimes with no real explanation and the author seems to pick and choose depending on the scene how powerful or weak Bleak is. One minute Bleak can kill multiple people and bend people’s minds to do what she wants and the next she can’t defend herself or fight back. One minute she is a mysterious, powerful woman travelling around on the back of a powerful Teerah panther and the next she’s doing nothing of any substance except wanting a drink.
I very much disliked Swinton. I think the author was trying to create a character that was damaged but ultimately found redemption. Unfortunately I found Swinton’s actions completely reprehensible and trying to justify them as him having no choice as he was doing it to save someone didn’t wash as he was ultimately responsible for so many deaths and so much suffering that it could not be justified. He was just weak and selfish. His actions towards Bren were also completely avoidable. To try to bring his story around in some redemption arc fell flat, there was nothing that he did that came close to making up for everything that had come before and to have him awarded a medal was a joke. There is no way that Henri or Bleak would have forgiven him.

Whilst the general story arc was strong as was the author’s world building there were gaps and too many plot tricks. For example, Bren seemed to be in the story purely to justify the Moredon Tower plot line as there was no real reason given as to why he insisted on chasing Bleak or why he would claim to be an Ashai. There was no time given to develop any deep relationship between him and Bleak. Then, suddenly he’s pushed out of the story with no real explanation and there ultimate farewell left me wondering what the point of him was. The Oremere princes are another element where the characters were underdeveloped and the author introduced several possible threads that were never closed out and histories that were left with gaps. For example Tailor seemed to only be in the story to provide a mechanism to allow characters to travel quickly from one region to another.

Ultimately whilst the final battle scenes was epic and dramatic it didn’t really work for me. Bleak and the others had spent time finding the mythical amulet that could save them and yet when push came to shove it didn’t seem to do anything and it was actually unclear how they finally managed to overcome the powerful Ines. Meanwhile Ines seemed to have thousands upon thousands of troops at her disposal who then just seemed to disappear. Finally the death scenes fell flat for me. The author seemed to have included them purely for dramatic effect and in one case had clearly been building up the character just so that they could be sacrificed in this scene.

Finally the epilogue seemed to have been included purely so that Tailor could quickly run through all the outstanding story points and close them out. I was unsatisfactory and I felt like the author had run out of steam and just couldn’t be bothered to finish everything off. You never really understand what Bleak’s future is or what happens with Nickolai. I found it frustrating.

Overall this was an enjoyable fantasy but could have done with more character building and plot line follow through.

Not just for youngsters

This is not just a YA book. I am old with YA kids and I loved this book. I finished this whole series in less than a week. I had a really hard time putting it down. I did not expect this series to be so engaging. I'm pleasantly surprised. I am going right now to look for more books from this author.

By the way, I borrowed this book with my Kindle Unlimited and returned it and borrowed it and returned it again and again. I kept returning it because the blurb and the book cover. It sounded good but I always found another book that was more appealing. I only started reading it because the newest update for Kindle Fire messed up my library. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make....read this book. It's great! Cheer for Bleak. Crush on Fi. Mourn for the ones that lost their lives and definitely fall in love with Rion and Xander. No spoilers from me!

Unbearably bore. I couldn't finish it. My god pages after pages of nothingness with a lingering promise of something nice coming along. Felt like wanna be harry potter. Sorry but not for me.

Incredible Reading Journey

I don’t even know where to start, it was such an incredible reading journey with unexpected epic proportions. The character development is deep and complex with a tumultuous yet natural progression, new writers should read and learn.

I never thought I would come to love the alcoholic pickpocket named Bleak, what a surprise she turned out to be with never ending plot twists. And “by the rules” Commander Swinton and Queen Henri the Valian, very different people yet so rigid in their thinking until Bleak enters their lives and upsets everyone’s apple cart of ideals and ideas. And wonderful, exuberant Dash who grows into a man more quickly than anyone thought possible. I fell in love with them all. And the villains...oh wow, so artfully, cruelly and skillfully depicted.

The beautiful and vibrant descriptions of every location, the excruciating pain and torment of personal struggles, the fear of defeat at the hands of the enemy, the power of human spirit and intervention of magical abilities had me glued to the pages. I went past my regular bedtime more evenings than I wanted to while “trying” to go slowly so I could savor the experience longer.

There are so many hit or miss books on Kindle Unlimited and I guarantee you, this is a HUGE hit. The writing is beautiful and the editing excellent. It would be perfect except for a few, niggling loose ends that left me wondering: how did the Mother Matriarch get out of her prison cell to consume the herbs; when Swinton saved the Prince and Princess from the firestorm with the fireproof blankets how did the horses survive; what happened to Xander in the final battle - he wasn’t mentioned so I was hoping he would show up as a surprise for Dash at the ceremony. Maybe in he next book 🙏

To be able to seamlessly read all three books without waiting and losing the flow of the story was joyous. I loved this series and look forward to reading more from this author. Highly recommended.

I absolutely love this series. It is told from the perspective of multiple POV, which is something that I enjoy because I want to know what everyone is thinking and get to know their personalities. This series does not disappoint.
The story follows Bleak, an orphan girl with secret powers that she had to keep hidden in a world that people are against her kind. To stop reading people’s thoughts, she drowns then out with alcohol.
There is also a mysterious mist that is slowly taking over and destroying towns, people never to be seen again. The king sends Commander Swinson to bring Bleak in. Along the way, they are stopped by a female group of warriors who rescue Bleak and take her to their village where she learns more about her powers.
The story also follows Dash, a young boy, and his friendship with the the blind Princess Olena.

Each person is complex with so many secrets that unfold throughout. It kept me guessing throughout. I don’t want to give much away because it would spoil it, but I really love all the characters and world building. This series was hard to guess outcomes and twists ahead of time and kept me surprised and intrigued. Characters are connected in various ways that tie everyone’s story line together.

The second book opens up a completely new world with new characters, while still focusing on the characters in the previous book. We finally find out more about Bleak’s mysterious past and meet characters that were connected to it.
Swinton has more secrets revealed about himself, Olena moves into her betrothed Prince’s kingdom, and Dash goes through a life-changing transformation.

All the storylines come together in the third book, and we finally see the battle between good vs evil.
Once again, so many wow moments that were foreshadowed in the previous two books! It makes me want to go back and do a reread for all the things I missed!

A girl with a hidden past is turned over to the king's men for reasons unknown to her. She is rescued by a tribe of female warriors. The soldiers return to the king and are sent back to recapture her. The blind princess and her best friend, the son of the king's stable master are about to be separated. Magic is everywhere, and it's uncertain whether that is good or bad. And a deadly mist is creeping in from all sides. And that's just the beginning of the story.

These books were my introduction to the writing of Helen Scheuerer, and I'll admit, I started out not liking A LOT of the characters. They were selfish, drank too much, cursed too much, partied too much, etc. But despite the many flaws, they all had redeeming qualities that began to show through as the books continued. At the beginning, magic was seen as a curse, but as the story progressed, the unique magical abilities were shown as being the driving force of the story.

It's a strange world that Helen created, but it's an intriguing one as well. The world is a mystery to its inhabitants and each region is ruled differently - I loved exploring so many of them. As others have pointed out, the children were the best (and most likable) characters. Each of them stepped into their roles regardless of their ages. There were tons of unhealthy relationships, yet there was also loyalty, family, and pride in cultural identities. These books made me feel.

I was given a free copy of the series by the author and have reviewed it willingly.

Far Beyond Amazing!!!

I went backwards through Helen Scheuerer’s works to end up here at Oremere Chronicles. I was hooked in by the amazing Legends of Thezmarr series, then Ashes of Thezmarr, then Curse of the Cyren Queen, and finally landed here, to be fully enraptured with this series. I had no idea all of her series, The Oremere Chronicles, Curse of the Cyren Queen, Legends of Thezmarr and Ashes of Thezmarr were all in the same world and intermingled together! I legitimately squealed when certain characters from the other series showed up, and it made me love this series even more. I can honestly say, I have absolutely loved every single series that she has written and the Oremere Chronicles was truly no exception. This was so captivating, exciting, heartbreaking, inspirational, immersive and overall nothing short of phenomenal! I love how real and relatable she writes her characters, and how they are shown to be strong and resilient despite their numerous flaws. I absolutely loved this series and cannot recommend it enough, and now that I know all Helen Scheuerer’s books are connected, I’m going to do a re-read through them all. This series has cemented Helen Scheuerer as an insta read author for me and she is solidified as one of my most favorite authors of all time. Please, please continue to write more Helen Scheuerer. We need so much more of your creative genius in the world. Such a fantastic series!!!

I received a copy of this omnibus from the author.

This book series surprised me in the best of ways. A very refreshing fantasy story that kept me at the edge of my seat, and my stomach in knots. This is not a "Chosen One" who takes on a quest, and it makes for the best adventure! Very polished YA fantasy that is far from juvenile.

The characters feel genuine with their flaws and the mistakes of their past. I truly connected with each and every one of them, although there is a special place in my heart for the POV characters Bleak, Swinton, Henri, and Dash. There is so much depth to each and every one of them. Through her skilled writing, the author conveyed their emotions precisely and was able to make me experience them along with the characters.

The author has a knack for worldbuilding and she created a one of a kind magic system. The sumptous writing immersed me in this grand story. Although they are lenghty novels, the pacing is incredible, and no detail felt superfluous.

This whole series was one of the best I have read in a long time. I am recommending it to anyone who is looking for something different than the typical YA fantasy.

This is an exciting collection of the books as well as the prequel stories that are the Oremere Chronicles.
In a world where there are 4 continents, what's up with the mist and what is Oremere? This series is great fun following an intriguing cast of characters as they battle against King Arden and his schemes. Who's behind him urging him on?

And do these people really know the geography of their own world? (Nope)

The world building is thorough, and the magic system intriguing. I really enjoyed the series and was happy to get to read an ARC.

Bleak, Henri, Dash, Swinton and more are intricately drawn, indepth characters that are a joy to read.

I read an ARC of this book collection and have chosen to review it

First off : There is a map! A Map!! I love so much when authors makes maps for their books.

I really liked how the story began with Bleak.
Usually I am not really fond of third person but i liked it in this one.

In the first book I wasn't fond of Henri nor of the other Valia but she grows more on me in the later books ( although out of the four main characters she was my least favorite.)

Dash and Swinton were my favs. (Poor Swinton 😭😭😭)

The writing is good and easily readable ( though I struggle a little with Henri Chapters but it was more because I don't click with her rather than the writing)

I really liked the prequel novellas but I would have loved more Fiore ( just a wish as he was my fave secondary character)

I really like Bleak's character, she's one of those characters that you either love or hate! Bleak has the ability to hear people's thoughts and she had always thought of it as a curse. I really didn't like the way that everyone treated her, and the way people just watched when she was beaten, it didn't sit right with me. But as the series goes on you can see Bleak's character grow, from finding out her true heritage to trying to figure out her place in the world. The other characters in the series tied up the series pretty good too, and I really enjoyed reading from their point of views, not many authors do this which i thought was pretty cool. Definitely recommedn this series, it will definitely take you on a roller coaster!

I am beyond impressed with this series. The world building is fast paced and just enough to set you firmly in the world. The intermingling of multiple points of view are flawlessly woven into a brilliant tapestry of a story The characters are rich and complex and their motivation for their actions is clear.

Really just a stunning example of epic fantasy.

I was gifted a review copy for an honest review. Opinions are my own

Such an incredible series!

I absolutely loved reading this series with its intriguing storyline and three dimensional characters. The world building is spectacular, from the scorching desert lands of Battalon to the artic tundras of Havanese. The storyline is complexed, intriguing and interlaced. The whole series is beautiful written and a real page turner. Helen Scheurer has fast become one of my favourite authors and I look forward to reading more of her books

Superb, masterful story-telling!

Dear Ms. Scheuerer, you are indeed a delightful, diligent and accomplished author! I love how you have spun all of the webs of world-building into this trio (+additional post/preludes) of sensational characters, thoughts and of course real dedication to your craft. Many other thoughts have I, but limited space. Oh well, another time perhaps. I plan to read your other works as soon as able.

Good story

I really enjoyed the series, and the real-world issues some of our heroes have. It made the story much more believable, (as much as a Fantasy story can be) and it made me feel more for the people. I even cried a few times because of how the story was written. I do want more stories on other characters because I'm interested in reading what their future holds. But, alas, probably won't see it.
I enjoy this author's stories. I've read almost every single one.

This world and the characters are amazing. Sometimes I wanted to punch some of them and then the next moment they’re breaking your heart. I loved this series. The first three are the main books and the fourth is a deeper dive into all the characters because there is a lot of them. Once you get a hang of the dual POV it’s a very easy and smooth read with moments of wait don’t switch yet like TOG.

I loved Bleak's story and evolution. I did like getting to know other characters like Fi and Dash, and Sahara. At times, the multiple POVs didn't do it for me. There were some chapters I dragged myself through, but I loved the story enough to keep going.

Excellent story with richly developed setting and characters. I listened to the audiobook, and it was also very well done. However they weirdly put the prequel at the end. If you listen to the audiobook version you might want to listen out of order. Otherwise highly recommended.

Wonderful! I Couldn't put it down.

The story line and main characters developed consistently. The author took a potentially humdrum subject and turned it into an exciting, unusual, event. This is the type of book that I "lived in" and hated to leave it when the story ended.
