Most of us lead desperately busy lives, with little time, we think, for spoiling ourselves or others. Yet wouldn't it be good to feel that we could make even the most everyday activities a little special? Domestic Bliss shows how to do just that. From throwing dinners and parties that everyone will kill to be invited to and welcoming house guests in style (even if they are only sleeping on the sofa), to forcing the more tedious domestic chores into submission and becoming the most ingenious present-giver ever, this book is packed with ideas. With Rita's idiosyncratic, sometimes bossy, always entertaining text, a chic design and fabulous publicity guaranteed, this book will allow everyone to add a little sparkle to life.
Not a book about efficiency, but more a book about how to make the things you have to do, more enjoyable. Plus it is just a fun read. Rita is very humorous. Fast and fun.
This is getting four stars mainly because I LOVE Rita - in particular her quirky interiors/lifestyle columns for the New York Times and now the Wall Street Journal. About half the book feels like pure fantasy to me, just not relevant to my life at all at the moment (notably the chapters on entertaining and parties; camping and picnics; and spoiling oneself). There is some useful information though on dealing with builders; markets and antique shops; storage solutions; and domestic chores. But the main thing to read it for is just Rita's lovely bossy tone. Her writing is full of personality.
Ugh. Neither practical nor stylish. I think the author is just taking a piss out of all the "living with style" type of texts. I mean, she has to be, because I can't believe that someone would give a tip like keeping a chocolate stash near your baby's diaper changing table to make the diaper blowouts easier on you. Who in their right mind would want to eat, and eat chocolate at that, of all things, while changing a dirty diaper?
Oh so Posh and delicious ...Rita suggests we vaccum our homes in Bra and Panties to make it more fun but only if you're wearing lace or silk (no grubby white/grey cotton please)....I love it! On a more series side she gives tips on giving gifts (wedding etc) hosting dinner parties and etiquette. A Real gem of a book.
(read sometime ago but set as today to stop it messing up my shef:)
