Into the Fire #3

Burn So Bad

Rate this book
Levi
Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and hate can always turn into love.
Lucy hates me. She especially hates how much I want her.
I should give up the chase, but I can’t.
It’s more than a spark between us. It’s a bonfire.
Fate rolls the dice and lands Lucy right where I want her.
She needs my help, and I need her.
One taste, and I’m lost. I’ll do anything to have her and to hold her.
To make her mine.

Lucy
Levi drives me crazy, and not the good kind of crazy.
He’s so smoldering hot, it’s dangerous.
A hotshot firefighter, he nearly sets me on fire whenever he’s around.
Perhaps it’s an occupational hazard.
He teases me every chance he gets and tempts me to let down my guard.
I definitely don’t need a man.
But Levi’s more than a man. He’s a man on octane fuel—pure, raw, primal masculinity practically oozes from his pores.
One night of weakness, and I tumble into his fire.
It’s more than I expected. It’s how I feel when I’m with him—safe and protected. I never want to let go.
I might get burned if I’m not careful.

I really struggled with this book, which was a total bummer because I really enjoyed the story for the most part and it was written so well. But I just couldn’t stand Lucy, the main chick. I think she’s one of my most hated heroines yet.

I’m serious. There were times when I understood where she was coming from, felt compassion for her irrational fears, and sided with her on a multiple of issues. But the way she was with Levi, for the most part, aggravated me to no end.

This story was relatively easy so you can imagine how great my ire was when I’m using ‘kill you’ gifs. And why was my last nerve shot? Because Levi was freaking amazing! J.H. Croix, I’ve never read from you before, but with Levi, you gave me utter perfection. He was sexy, smooth, funny, charming, understanding, considerate, and a gosh darn heroic fire fighter. C’mon!! So yeah, I’m a little upset that this man tower of awesomeness got a bum deal. His counterpart didn’t treat him with the respect I felt he deserved and for that I’m upset. Even in the end, I wasn’t Lucy’s greatest fan but I’m a huge supporter of all things Levi, so I’m not going to figuratively shoot the chick. I’m just not anywhere near to liking her.

In the end, you’ve got a sweet romance that was low on angst, high on Lucy’s drama, had an adrenaline-pumping bonus of firefighting action, with heaps of sexiness and likeable side characters thrown in. I’m a mixed bag of emotions over it and I’m trying to find a balance. While it’s obvious that Lucy and I will never be friends, I want to be permanently attached to Levi. He’s the reason I rated this story the way I did because he was everything.

It took me a little bit to get into this book. I felt like at the beginning there was a lot of repetitiveness in the writing which tends to be a pet peeve of mine.

This is the first book I have read by this author & to be honest I don’t even know why I had this book already on my Kindle since I don’t even have any other books marked TBR from this author. Obviously I didn’t read the first 2 books in this series but it wasn’t necessary since this is a different couple.

Levi is a great character but I did have a hard time understanding Lucy. I understand she had a tough childhood but I don’t think that it was rational that she acted the way she did towards Levi. I would understand her hesitation with a relationship but she was rude and really cold at times that I don’t think the situation called for that extreme behavior.

The storyline was good & the secondary characters were good so I did still enjoy the book but she was certainly not a favorite character of mine. I will most likely read another book from this author just to compare it to this one as far as writing style.

Good Read

I really loved this story. This is Levi and Lucy's story. I liked both characters a lot. Levi was a cool, laid back guy who knew who he wanted and what he wanted was Lucy. Lucy had a rough childhood and pretty much relied on no one but herself. She constructed deep walls around her heart and refused to let anyone in. She avoided Levi because he brought out feelings in her that made her uncomfortable, feelings she wasn't ready to face. All her plans get thrown out the window when she finds herself homeless and Levi is the only one who has room for her. This story was equal measures sweet and sexy. Levi is the perfect book boyfriend! Who wouldn't love a man with a pet hamster!

I'm glad Lucy finally came around and stopped being so annoying and stubborn. This book wasn't my favorite. Because of Lucy. But I loved Levi. I also loved to see how much we saw of Amelia and Cade. They made the book gain a full star.

There are author's that I can't get enough of them. I can't. I want more and more each and everytime I finish one book. It's insane but it's what I feel and I'm not ashamed. LOL
J. H. Croix has been my to go author for quite some time and I'm thankful everyday for the chance to read her books. Her writing is simple, detailed, heartfelt, insanely hot and with so much meaning behind each word.
Have you had the chance to read any of her books? Oh boy! If you haven't you can't possibly imagine what you're missing.
Burn So Bad is the third book from the Into The Fire series and it's hot alright... Imagine this... Hot firefighters... Stunning and strong womans... Equals the perfect match.
But before I tell you a little bit more about this story I totally advise you to read the other two books from this series. Trust me.. You will not regret it.
This third book focus on the lifes of Lucy and Levi.
Lucy is a very strong woman that is used to be on her own and do things her way. She is partner together with Amelia on their construction firm called Kick A**. They are used to heavy work and they love it. She's stubborn as hell, but she hides a very big heart.
She hates Levi and the idea of a relationship doesn't appeal to her. After a fight with her landlord she finds herself without a place to stay. So were will she yen to?
Levi is a hotshot firefighter and a very good one. He has a crush, or is it lust for Lucy but she can't stand him. He has invited her several times to a date but she always refuse.
But is this for real? Is really Lucy that stubborn? Can Levi get what he wants?
OMG this series keeps getting better and better. I loved this book.
The plot is amazing, fast paced and very well written as well as super engaging.
The interation between the characters is intense and beautiful, sometimes funny and frustrating. Jeez... Can she be more stubborn than this? And the hot scenes are there... Oh boy... Hot...
I really love a book that has the ability to hook me up from the beginning, and the way this series is going I know it will get even better.
Oh J. H. what are you trying to do? Driving me insane? You're almost achieving that... Lol
Can't wait for the next book from this series.

If any other woman would have shot him down and given him the prickly attitude, Levi would have walked away. Lucy though is everything he wants, she pushes back and speaks her mind bluntly, but he would not have it any other way.

Lucy is weary of Levi, she has been burned before and the hot firefighter has made his interest known and she has been trying to avoid him but fate has other plans. Lucy finds herself in a pickle and the one person who steps up to help her is Levi. Can she keep her feelings to herself or will she take a chance on Levi?

I enjoyed the snark where Lucy was concerned. Levi is a treat, he oozes charm and is a perfect match for Lucy. Thought this was entertaining and I couldn't help but smile throughout.

Oh my goodness! Lucy and Levi were absolutely amazing! I couldn't get enough of these two! Levi was the absolute sweetest! I love how he took care of Lucy and he never gave up her. Lucy and Levi definitely worked so well even though they had to make sure they were on the same page. So happy they got the ending they deserved! 💜🔥

Hot and Sweet

*****Spoilers*****

Levi and Lucy were great for one another, but Lucy had to let Levi in first. It was more difficult than I would have expected. Her past wasn't as much of a hang-up when it came to Lucy's relationship expectations, it was more her personality. Independent almost to a fault, she had to loosen up and be open to love and what that means for her and someone else. Levi was so patient, saintly at times but he did the best thing he could do which was wait for Lucy to come to him in her own time. Thankfully she does because Levi was so sweet, even starting from when he offers to let Lucy live with him when she doesn't have a place to go. The attraction is scorching hot between them and the intimate scenes equally so. Levi is crazy about Lucy and she has her forever guy.

I was really interested to get Lucy's story. She is a tough one. A messed up past turned her into a prickly loner with a few close friends. She is very independent and hates depending on anyone. Levi is fun loving, sweet and an all around good guy. He actively sought of Lucy for dates but she kept saying no. He backed away but was still attracted to her. He helps her out when she needs a place to stay. The close proximity is more than Lucy can handle. Much to her chagrin and our delight she falls for Levi. Things go from 0 to 60 in no time. Solid story line with great characters.

Loved this series. In this 3rd one, we see Lucy and Levi. Both were in previous stories, but they find each other in this one. Levi is a hotshot firefighter and Lucy owns the local construction company. Levi wants her, but Lucy doesn't do relationships. She doesn't want to lose herself. Will he be able to burn down her walls? I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Lovely story
This book was sweet, hot, and all the good feelings. I love firefighter books, and they always have a special place in my heart as I know how hard of job they have but also how strong their partners need to be. Cause you never know what's going to happen on a call. This amazing story nearly puts that out there as well as having friends to lovers vibe going

This 3rd book's story line was okay. I liked the chemistry in this story. I liked the hot & steamy scenes. I liked Lucy's character. I liked Levi's character. I liked the ending. I felt this book's story line moved slower than the other 2.

This was a good read. Levi has liked Lucy for awhile now. She is attracted to him too. However, due to her mother's past she is afraid to have a relationship. What started out as just fun turned out to be so much more for the two of them.

I am in love with the hotshot firefighters of Willow Brook, Alaska. This is the third book in the series featuring these incredibly sexy men and the ladies they fall in love with, and while they’ve all been unique, each has been a total kindle-melter!

This story of Levi and his unending passion for Lucy is no exception to this hotness factor. In fact, Levi should probably get a couple of merit badges or something, for persistence and control. After all, this over-the-top sexy alpha fireman could pretty much have any girl he wanted—except the one he’s had a fiery obsession over for years. Lucy’s kept him at more than arm’s length in an icy chill-out for as long as they’ve known each other. She just won’t give him a chance even though the air practically ignites with sparks whenever they’re near each other. She just refuses to acknowledge any sort of attraction.

But when fate finally throws our luscious hotshot a bone, Lucy ends up in Levi’s house and ultimately in his bed, Levi shows what a true gentleman he is. *sigh* Demonstrating an amazing amount of control, he shows that his concern is for her first. Geez, what a guy.

Together, Levi and Lucy are lots of fun. Levi is the strong, protective alpha male that has always teased Lucy because he loves to rile her. Lucy is a petite, feisty construction worker with an enormous independent streak who feels that she has no need for a man in her life. That fiery streak really appeals to Levi, he just has to figure out how to get around her barriers.

As with the other books in this series, the plot is well paced and nicely developed. The ensemble cast of characters from the previous books reappears for this book, adding to the overall richness of the story. If you haven’t yet read the other stories in the series, however, this book can easily be read as a standalone. For readers who like to be informed, this is definitely a steamy romance (hey, he’s a hotshot fireman after all!), and there is some mature language.

*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from IndieSage PR*

It's a 3.5 for me. This was more than okay for me, but I'm not quite up in the 'I like it' status just yet. Lucy was really difficult to get into and I seriously love her for doing her best in getting through the hardships and becoming the woman she is today, but I personally struggled with getting any of it, so I'll say it's not for me. Levi was a total golden-boy-turned-hot-firefighter and I liked how bright he was. He really balanced out Lucy when she was tripping out on her insecurities. I think his cuteness and his madness to please her and assure her in ways no one else did are what kept me pretty interested. It's the first time I'm reading this author so I'll probably check out a few more of her books, but the near ending got me in the feels a few times so I'd recommend this if you're a big fan of romances, firefighters, complicated strong women molded by hardships and bad pasts that bring on the drama game strong.

This was a sweet, wholesome read and while I did enjoy the book, I also struggled with it. I liked that the angst level wasn’t high, I did keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. I felt that these characters were relatable and everyday people.

It did, however, take me some time to get into the story. I just didn't feel the connection and the chemistry these characters had. I couldn’t wrap my head around Lucy’s character at all. I get why she was so guarded and headstrong; she had every right to be but man, she was hard to like and hard to connect with. Then there’s Levi…sweet, charming, sexy as hell, Levi...sigh… I fell in love with him. He is the reason I powered through with the story and I’m so happy I did.

This is my first read from this author and I would definitely read another book from her.

I thought this was okay. While the writing flowed okay, I felt like I was rereading certain things over again every couple of pages. Either the hero or the heroine would describe something, and then a couple of pages later, I was being told about the same things again. While that probably doesn't bother everyone, it kind of took me out of the story. Lucy was independent to a fault. She was super stubborn, and didn't want to accept help from anyone. While I know her backstory shed some light on it, I felt like she took it to an extreme. Levi was a good guy, and I thought that he helped Lucy come out of her shell. This was a first for me from this author, but I would be willing to read her work again.

Burn So Bad by J.H.Croix was the story of Lucy and Levi. Levi really likes Lucy and wants to be with her, while Lucy won't give him the time of day.

I had a very hard time getting into this book. I struggled to get through this story. I liked Levi, I think he was a good character, but I didn't care for Lucy in the least. I think I was expecting more from this book than what I got. There was SO MUCH inner monologue and not that much dialogue for me. I really didn't get invested in these characters.

Overall, it was ok. I think that I had built this one up to be something else and so what I read wasn't what I had expected in my mind based on the blurb. The writing wasn't bad, it was good, I think that this one just wasn't for me.

Levi was a great H, though he was almost too perfect, maybe if he had a flaw or two, I could see why Lucy was reluctant. Lucy was a so so h, way too much in the head drama for me. The rating for this book came down to the fact I found this story rather boring. It also got on my nerves Levi's internal monologue stating multiple times that he's a hotshot firefighter. Yah I know, I haven't forgotten - it was mentioned already in this chapter. Overall, an OK story. *I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.

The Into the Fire series is about dedicated firefighters and the one person who has grabbed their attention. In the third book, a man and woman who live in Willow Brook, Alaska are consumed with desire for each other, yet the female tries to deny the potent longing. But when control is lost and passion takes over, the lives of this couple are forever changed. J.H. Croix once again drew me into a story where emotions run high and complicated issues must be worked out, which made BURN SO BAD constantly riveting.

After a bad day turns even worse for Lucy Caldwell, it is Levi Phillips who comes to her rescue twice. As a hotshot firefighter, he has chosen a career where he often puts himself in the way of physical harm. But being around the snippy construction owner always seems to result in his troubles being more emotional, though his body might also suffer if she keeps them from ever getting any closer. When an incident has Levi and Lucy spending lots of time together, he wonders if this unexpected opportunity will get her to admit she is interested in him. While she has a good reason for not trusting men, being the recipient of the firefighter’s protective side could have her thinking about altering her beliefs.

Since Levi and Lucy had been met in previous books of the series, I already knew how delightful these two people were at all times. Levi has taken over as being my favorite hero of the books released so far, as he is such an endearing man in so many ways. He is compassionate, honest, and definitely sexy, and I loved how he was willing to give Lucy the time she needed when difficult choices had to be made. His nature to not be demanding had me seeing him as such a remarkable man, and I just hoped that Lucy would realize how lucky she was to have his interest focused on her. But with her background, I could certainly understand why she was independent and did not want to have others telling her what to do.

While the two prior books would not have to read in order to enjoy BURN SO BAD, they are not to missed stories. It was really great getting to see how the two main couples in these stories were doing, and their comments sometimes added quick-wit to any banter and even gave fabulous advice now and then. The Alaska setting came alive from the author’s descriptive details, and the hazards of firefighting in the area are explored, too. I am very glad there are more books to come in this outstanding series.

“I’d had a thing for her ever since I moved to Willow Brook right after high school. She’d ignored me then and she mostly ignored me now.”

Levi has had a crush for Lucy since he met her, but she constantly shoots down all his flirtatious comments and offers to take her out on a date. So, it become their thing for him to rile her up with incendiary comments, and for her sharp tongue to shred him. However, underneath the flippant comments, Levi is intrigued by her and genuinely cares about her. So, when she’s in need, he’s offers her a solution and realises that he needs to tread softly, if he has any chance of winning her over.

“Just being close to him made me jumpy, restless, and hot and prickly all over.

Lucy keeps everyone at arm’s length, especially guys. She happy to sate her needs with random one-night stands. However, Levi is incredibly hard to shake off, add in the fact that she finds him insanely attractive. Her level of snark always seems to rise when he’s close by. When her circumstances change unexpectedly, he offers her a reasonable solution, although it tests the strength of her defensive barriers and restraint.

“My hand apparently had a mind of its own. Because I touched him without even thinking, reaching out and sliding my palm down his chest.”

Lucy is a contradiction. She looks like a little fairy but has a huge presence and fiery personality. She is really prickly and sharp-tongued, but pretty sweet and vulnerable underneath. She is carrying some heavy baggage around and it’s stopping her leading a full life. She’s hugely independent and incredibly stubborn – to the point of unreasonable, sometimes.

Levi is a good man. He’s got the measure of Lucy and I loved how much he wanted to win her over. He’s got a generous heart and a lot of patience.

”This…this thing with us. I hate that I want you. It’s annoying and stupid and you make me crazy. The good kind of crazy and the bad kind.”

There was a lot of electric tension between them, and I loved how Lucy started to see the real Levi and fall for him, in spite of the fact that she doesn’t like how he makes her feel.

This was a fab read that was sexy and sweet.

Lucy is a strong, independent woman who doesn't do relationships. She grew up watching her parents in a bad marriage, with a father who was abusive, and then her first crush messed her head up, so now, she's just not willing to open herself up to heartache, because she doesn't trust that any relationship will work out for her. Levi is a super hot fireman, who has had a thing for Lucy since he laid eyes on her, but she has always been mean to him. That has never stopped him from flirting with her just to get a rise out of her. Plus, he really enjoys this chase, as he believes she's worth it. Finally, fate steps in, and Levi has her staying at his house. So in the close quarters, their chemistry is taking over, and finally, she ends up in his bed. But Levi knows that he has to step lightly, or she will run, but Lucy finds that she never wants to let go. Burn So Bad was a HOT story with a big side of angst that I loved so much, that I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough. I fell in love with Levi from the beginning, and while Lucy was a bad a** female, I wanted to shake her more than once for her stubbornness. But together, they were a forest fire that wouldn't be put out, as they lit the sheets on fire during sexy times. Plus their interactions were hilarious, especially when Lucy had too much to drink. And the colorful cast of secondaries added to the humor which kept me laughing a lot! J.H. Croix has a talented writing style that found me addicted to immediately, as this story pulled me in from the beginning. I cannot wait to read more by her, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Another scorching book from the “Into The Fire Series”. Burn So Bad gives us Lucy and Levi’s hot story. We met Lucy and Levi in previous books and if you remember Lucy is partners in Kick A** Construction with Amelia. Lucy is hard core, take no prisoners and isn’t into the whole dating scene. Levi is a Hotshot Fireman just like Cade, Amelia’s husband. Levi has been trying for some time to get Lucy to go out with him but she has flat shot him down. Fortunately, fate steps in and Lucy is stuck on a scaffolding and hurt and needs rescued by the fire and rescue team. Guess who saves her? Yes, Levi and the sparks fly between these two. There are several things going on in this story that I won’t reveal in this review but trust me it’s full of emotions. I love how JH lets us keep up with the characters from previous books so we get to see what is happening with Amelia and Cade and a glimpse of Maisie and Beck. The town in which these characters live is Willow Brook Alaska and it sounds beautiful and the supporting characters are fun loving people. I can’t wait for you to meet Ham. You will love him too. I voluntarily read an early copy of this book to review and give my honest opinion. I loved it. It has a high level of heat, depth of the characters, lots of different emotions from humor, to sadness to fear to true love. I highly recommend it. This is a standalone even though it is part of a series you do not have to read the others to enjoy this book but trust me you will want to because they are also fantastic. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This is my first JH Croix book and I read this as a standalone. I just want to state that the rating and review is MY opinion and does not reflect what you may think of the book, dont let it stop you from enjoying it!

This story was incredibly well written and for the first half of the book I got into it very quickly, then after a while I found I started to put the book down, I sort of felt like it wasn't gripping me as much. I really did have trouble continuing.

I really enjoyed Levi's pov chapters, he was interesting, fun and I loved the more action scenes of him in his job, being all hot and rugged fireman at work. He was a very genuine character and very likable.

Lucy is where I struggled, I found it very hard to connect with her character. She came across as very naive and somewhat self centred and her commitment issues became very grating after a while. I totally got her reasons for being wary and unwilling but it was a very hot and cold sensation that was hard to get through. She was very closed off and guarded which worked well with her history but there was alot of "shes so vulnerable but shes so strong" and that was confusing.

I rated it the way I did because while the writing was good and I enjoyed one of the main characters alot, I just felt that the story fell a bit flat and not a whole lot happened besides Levi doing firefighter stuff which although interesting and well written didnt carry me to the end as well as I had hoped. Again don't take my review too much to heart, we can't enjoy them all. This one just wasnt for me.

Another awesome book from the fabulous J. H. Croix that will make you go Ohhhhhhh!!! In this story you have Lucy that is a very independent woman and Levi, a hotshot firefighter. Lucy is partners with Amelia in Kick A** Construction and does not date due to the abusive life she grew up with. The attraction between Lucy and Levi is enough to start a forest fire and brings out the feisty side of Lucy. When Lucy becomes homeless after telling off her landlord unfortunate circumstances leaves her staying at the last place she wants to be, Levi's house. Levi is fighting his attraction to Lucy for fear pushing her to run. When Lucy decides that a one off will get it out of their system she is so far off the mark they can't keep their hands off each other. As Lucy and Levi spend time getting to know each other Levi knows that Lucy is the One and will do whatever it takes to give Lucy the time she needs to come to the same conclusion. Lucy starts to panic due to her feelings towards Levi and tries to push him away. When Levi's crew is called out for a fire Lucy finally admits her true feelings for him, but when complications with Levi's crew arise will it be too late. Enjoy another book in the Into The Fire Series and one click today. The characters genuine and will make you feel like they are neighbors. Can't wait for Wade and Savanah's story next in Hot Mess, already ordered it!!!
