Protecting Her

Rate this book
When you’re a bodyguard, you’re required to have a cool head, an alert eye, and a steel heart. You can’t allow your decisions to be swayed by emotions which is why falling in love with your client is forbidden. It’s a rule that has never affected me but now…after laying eyes on flame haired, freckle-cheeked scientist Catriona Hennessy I’m having a hard time remembering my own name let alone some dusty, arcane code of ethics. Two minutes after our introduction, I conclude that morals, principles, and guidelines are for losers. It would take a bomb to get me to leave her alone.

Some guys might be real saints and hope that the ones they love carry on in good spirits without them. Me? If I die, I want Cat to mourn me forever. Lie on my grave, weep for me, and wait for me because I’ll be back.

Sexy bodyguard romance by Ella Goode!

Ella Goode has quickly become one of my favorite contemporary authors because she knows how to write an alpha j/p hero like no one else. I also *love* the protector hero trope because who doesn't want a hot possessive guy who is dedicated to saving your life and claiming your body all in one night?! Gabe was just what I craved, and I am so glad I found Ella Goode as I have come to love her stories ♡

Apresurado y no tan bueno como los libros habituales de Ella Goode

Protecting her de Ella Goode

Her Protector by Ella Goode

HERO - Gabe Nelson. Personal security expert. Short hair and dark eyes.

HEROINE - Catriona Hennessey. Scientist. Red hair and freckles.

OVERALL THOUGHTS - I struggled with this one. I originally wrote a long, rambling review, but I’m going to ditch that and briefly list my reasons for the low rating. I’ve been loving the heroes that Ella’s been giving us lately, and kind of hating the heroines. This time the heroine was far less annoying, but devoid of personality, and even the hero was a disappointment. ~SOB~

1. Gabe comes across as an experimental crossover between the typical brooding alpha and Ella’s more recent quirky alpha and it doesn’t land very well. It just ends up making him feel like he’s got mood swings. In my opinion, if she’s trying to combine them, she needs to focus on only the best parts of each type (the intensity of the brooder and the humor of the quirky) and sprinkle in more charm than not, but not too much or he’ll go full quirky.

2. Catriona is less annoying than some of Ella’s more recent heroine’s but she also doesn’t have much of a personality. She comes across as a Dr. Brennan-type from the TV show “Bones” with her matter-of-fact speech and actions, but without the quirks and interesting personal life.

3. There was very little chemistry between Gabe and Cat. The story also contained very little heat. There’s one makeout scene, one dry humping scene, and a couple of brief “going down on her” scenes. None felt particularly steamy. The first sex scene isn’t until 87% and it takes place at an unknown point in the future so we apparently skipped right over their first time together. The only other sex scene was in the epilogue. Neither were very hot to me.

4. The plot is about a stalker, but no action happens on that front until about 60%. When the action does happen it’s glossed over in about 2 or 3 pages. Then a very thin twist happens and the true bad guys are revealed and that, too, is glossed over in 2-3 pages. Basically in the vast majority of this book nothing happens and it’s boring. Like I said before, we don’t even get (in my opinion) steamy shenanigans to fill the waiting time. Or if not steamy, how about some more romantic “getting to know you” scenes? I finished this book knowing nothing about their personal lives outside of work.

5. What happens after the bad guys are exposed is what drove the rating down from 3-stars to 2-stars. Gabe does a stupid thing, then realizes he did a stupid thing, sex scene at a random point in the future, and a mediocre HEA. Where was the romance?? I feel like we skipped over a bunch of stuff.

6. There are editing issues and descriptions are extremely vague throughout. I didn’t know what people were wearing, I didn’t know what people looked like, characters were suddenly in different places from where they’d been the sentence before with no transition explaining how they got there. It was a mess.

Gabe and Cat

I actually found the story between Gabe and Cat to be pretty angsty. Gabe almost seems void of emotion. Gabe was hard for me to like. I liked the beginning and the end, the middle was a bit of a challenge for me. Action and suspense on the way to their HEA.

I have added this author to my “one-click” list and bump her books to the top of my reading pile. The heroines are generally women I’d want to know in real life, and Cat from this book is no different. A respected (brilliant) scientist, the character of Catriona is neither Uber-geeky in a bore me technical manner, nor is she a mouse of a person. Likewise, Gabe is neither the brutish hires muscle or overbearing as a bodyguard. Instead, their personalities are nuanced and flavored by their professions. This made for a really enjoyable read.

Catriona is working on a serum to help with animal-bourne viruses, she is in the final stages of testing when three incidents happen to make her company hire a security firm and bodyguards. Gabe has always been no nonsense, ex military he is focused and deadly. All that goes out the window when he sees a picture of Cat. She is stunning and he for the first time in his life feels emotions for a woman. He’s very gruff with her in the beginning, causing Cat to think he doesn’t like her. Cat has no experience with men and doesn’t understand that he wants her. Laura the other bodyguard sees it immediately and tries to remind Gabe to keep things professional. The two have a very hard time staying away from each other. When the safe house is attracted they foil the kidnappers and move Cat back to her research facility. There the two share a little sexy times but no sex. Wasn’t a total surprise when the assistant attacks Laura and tries to kill Cat, but the other villain sure was. Gabe saves the day, rescues Cat, shots both the villains, and helps save Laura. He was shot in the shoulder by second villain, but you never read about him getting treatment or anything about it. Says Laura was fine but he stayed behind in lab just bleeding? Afterwards he feels very guilty of not realizing who the bad guys were and leaves Cat. After a few days and talking to Laura and his boss he goes to win Cat back. They are both virgins but you don’t get their first time together, skips to them already together. Epilogue five + years later with twins and talk of having another baby.

Guarding her heart and body

Another fabulous over the top Alpha awaits you! Ella Goode brings us Gabe. He’s always been by the book, never getting involved with a client. As a bodyguard he needs control. But with one look at his newest clients photograph he’s done for. Being a bodyguard is the last thing in this mans mind.

Catorina is a well know scientist she’s working on a new vaccine that’ll help thousands of people. She’s not in it for the money. Her heart is pure as well as her body. She doesn’t understand this need for dating. But one look at the man guarding her and she’s seriously second guessing that.

It’s swoon worthy goodness with a huge serving of sizzling chemistry.

Yes yes from me!

So disappointed! **SPOILERS**

I loved the beginning of this book. I liked the difference of the two main characters. I LOVED that they were both virgins. I enjoyed the storyline and then it all went down hill. The threat storyline was super predictable and was wrapped up unceremoniously in one paragraph. At this point we’re about 80% into the book with no sex, they’ve been waiting for the threat to be over. I’m willing to wait this long, even though I prefer a sex heavy storyline, because I’m fully invested in the couple. I turn the page fully expecting that I’m going to revel in this virgin couples first time and.....they’re right in the middle of sex (not their first time) at some point in the future when they’ve already had sex every way imaginable and I didn’t get to enjoy any of it. What the hell? Who thought this was a good idea? BOOOOOOOOO. 🤨☹️😭

I enjoyed this one very much! It was just missing a little something that Ella’s stories don’t usually miss. Because of that, I’m rating this one as 4.25 stars. I’m not sure exactly what was missing for me though. *sigh*

Catriona is a scientist who needs a team of bodyguards to watch her since someone has broke into the lab where she works, her car and now her home. But why? That’s my question. Read this one and let me know what you think.
Gabe is one of her bodyguards and he’s a great alpha male character. :)

Sadly, this book was a drag for me. The blurb and the premise of the story looked promising, but after finally meeting our hero, the insta-love, inta-lust he felt towards the heroine seems like it appeared out of nowhere. All the more as the story progressed and as we know him better, he felt unbelievable to me. Like surely with his physique, line of work, and virility, there is just no way that he And with that, it took me almost a week to finish this, instead of overnight. And while the suspense aspect of the story appeared cool in the blurb, and despite me failing to predict the perps on this one, I was still left with several whats and whys after the big reveal. To conclude, I guess I would have to swear off this kind of reading for a while and maybe venture into the longer ones. Hopefully, it would kiss my reading slump goodbye!

Good but rushed

*Potential Spoilers*

I was really into the premise of this book and Ella Goode is always an automatic read for me. I loved the characters in this book and I love a bodyguard romance which is why I was disappointed at how rushed this book felt. We barely got any time with MCs and their developing relationship. I'm not saying this should have been a 5,000 page book but I could have used 2 or 3 more chapters to really just spend time with the MCs and they navigate being together. I mean we have to virgin MCs and the author completely skipped over them losing their virginity to each other. There weren't a lot of sex scenes in this book which is fine but the few we got felt as rushed as the book over all. I will of course keep reading Ella Goode's books, that's not going to change any time soon, but this one just left me wanting unfortunately.

I really liked this story. It was entertaining and enjoyable. The characters were interesting and likable. Gabe is all-in as soon as he sees a picture of Catriona in the file about her needing protection. He tries to beg off because he knows that how he feels for her will be an issue for him as her bodyguard. No one else is available to take the case and he stays on the case knowing that this will be difficult for him. Catriona sees Gabe and feels drawn to him and doesn't understand why he is so grumpy. There is some drama while Gabe is protecting Catriona but he and his team take care of it. The twist with the person behind the attacks on Catriona wasn't one I saw coming. I loved their happy ever after. The chapter before the epilogue I did feel should have been an epilogue as well. It was way later and I didn't feel that it fit well. I recommend reading this book.

Gabe and Catriona were the perfect example of opposites attract. Catriona is a scientist working on a very crucial vaccine. Because of that, someone has been trying to spook her. Breaking into her house, shattering her car window has forced her to accept that she needs a security detail. Gabe didn't want to take this job, certain he knew how boring it would be. Then he saw a picture of Catriona and he couldn't wait to meet her in person. The attraction is immediate but its also distracting. Hard to protect the client when he all he wants is to take her in his arms and never let go. It was fun watching Gabe grovel a little, though I wish it was a bit more. Unfortunately, that isn't in Cat's personality to make it hard on him. Fast and fun, a great way to spend a weekend afternoon.

What was that?

Ok this is a book where the author is writing as someone who rushes and starts speed talking, not taking a breath and not making any sense. It's a train wreck! We are talking Big bang theory and a serurm. Like Covid. Ridiculous show of germa
phobe tendencies of kissing and the bacteria of your mouth. 2 virgins yet you do not have a 'scene' where they have sex for the first time? The last chapter should have been the first epilogue since it fully involved the sex and preferred position. Could have totally done without the epilogue. And WTF was sNathans? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it is 'smacked' her ass. No one in an edit picked that up? Some of her books are good but this one was not.

First things first; I love the cover of this book!
This story is short, fast paced and an enjoyable read. I read this book in one sitting and was satisfied throughout. I found the writing style easy to follow, the characters likeable and the storyline enjoyable. Catriona is a scientist that is receiving death threats. Because of that, she ends up with a team of bodyguards. Gabe shouldn’t want his client but he does.
The chemistry between Catriona and Gabe is clear to see and I liked them together.
I really liked Laura. I hope we get more of her at some point in the future.
I really liked the ending and the epilogue for this story.
The storyline for this book is easy to follow and it is an enjoyable read.

Once again not one of my favorites from Ella Goode.
I'm all for an alpha male who takes his job seriously...But I can't get behind Gabe seriously leaving Catorina after all the danger is over because he feels like he let her down. She wasn't injured...and heck how was he to know that the danger was lurking inside the lab.
Catorina...I don't know I didn't connect with her. Even though she was a quirky scientist who comes across as a bit of a germaphobe I just wasn't feeling it with her.
Then to get to where they finally do the naughty and we don't even get a first time. We get a little bit of dry humping then after all is forgiven between them we go straight to the epilogue. Which is where we get the first naughty scene.
Really not one I can see myself reading again.

Ella Goode is always a fun, quick, and easy read. I love these books. They are full of insta-love with strong characters. I enjoy the fact that the book is short, but not lacking in storyline and development. Gabe and Catriona were thrown together when there is a threat to Catriona's work and life. Gabe is brought in to protect her, and as soon as he sees her picture he is done, in love. This is double virgin story, which sometimes you just need. These two were engaging, and strong. As always the epilogue gives us a glimpse into the future. I can only hope that we see more from Gabe's team in the future.

Guarding Her Body

I love a good bodyguard romance and this.one was extra fun because it included a brilliant female scientist and some suspense and intrigue.

I loved the chemistry between Cat and Gabe, it was instant and intense. Which means Gabe was all kinds of dominate and possessive.

Cat being a brilliant scientist who was a bit awkward and spouted off all sorts of random information was so endearing, I couldn't help but root for her HEA.

I was a bit disappointed in the number of errors in this book, that's not typical for Ella books but it definitely was noticable and distracting this time around.

Meh

This was a miss for me. I love Ella Goode and I had to keep checking because it felt like I wasn’t reading one of her books. It falls flat and all the characters were very one dimensional, it reads like a manual. There was no chemistry and also every time the word smacks was in a sentence it read sNathan, almost like she’d named a character Mack and then changed the name with those automatic find and replace word program and no one proof read it. I gave it 3 stars because I don’t want to discourage someone from reading it, and authors go through funks too. For now I’m going to reread her FU High series as they had off the charts chemistry between the characters.

Instant love

This was a great bodyguard love story. The beauty and the Alpha. Gabe was done for the minute he saw his beautiful Catorina. The plot was well done and I connected to the primary characters right away, the secondary characters made the story better. This book could have used a trip to the editor again, as some of the dialogue was hard to follow and a few jumps in storyline confusing. This is not typical of an Ella Goode book, she is a one click author for me and I can't wait for her next great book.
