What will you dream of tonight? Will it be a midnight balloon ride, sailing on the tail of a whale or swinging through the leaves on a jungle trapeze? This dreamy, sumptuously illustrated tale travels through deserts and waterfalls to shipwrecks and dragon-filled skies as a parent wonders where their child's dreams will take them as they drift off to sleep . . .
Frances Stickley grew up in Nottingham and Norwich, where she spent much of her time making up poems and dressing up her dog. She is a trained children’s literacy specialist and a primary school teacher who is happiest when she is covered in paint or stuck in a book. In 2017, Frances was the winner of the Bloomsbury and National Literacy Trust short story prize. She lives with her family and a big-eared dog called Babbage. When she is not writing, you’ll probably find her in a forest playing dragons with her daughters.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I decided I wanted to read some more German books to brush up my German reading skills which have been going downhill. So a big yay to Netgalley.de for existing. I thought I would first try out a picture book and then level up as I go. Sadly, my writing skills have never been big as that is not something that was big on being taught during my high school. It was mostly conversations, learning words, reading, listening. I can vaguely remember a bit of writing, but it wasn’t much. So I have to write this review in English.
It took me a bit longer to read this one, but I am darn proud that I didn’t have to look up any of the words and that I could understand what happened quite easily! This book was beautifully written and I love how it rhymed. Apparently my skills aren’t too terrible.
It is about a girl who isn’t tired (we all know she actually is, but I know the feeling of not wanting to end a day) and then she is told about all the adventures she can have in her dreams. From catching stars to riding a while to flying in the sky. It is all very magical and I would love to have more dreams like that.
I loved the last sentences of the book and that last image to go with that. Awwww!
The illustrations are just so beautiful and colourful, I love the style and I definitely want more of it. It captures the story and the dream world so well!
All in all, a book I would highly recommend and a book I am sure will be a big hit with the little ones.
This book left me with such a happy feeling in my heart that is very difficult to describe--it is simply the sweetest book ever! The story begins with evening settling in a small city. Through the outline of several city buildings, the reader can see into the bedroom of a young girl as her mother reads to her a bedtime story. As the sun starts to fade, the mother asks her daughter what she will dream tonight. This is when the imaginary adventures really begin. Some options for dreams might include taking a hot air balloon over a forest, riding on the tail of a giant whale, taking a rocket ship to outer space and collecting a star as a souvenir, and riding on the back of a polar bear on a dark winter night. At the end of the story, the reader again sees the cityscape and all is dark, except for a soft glow in the young girl’s bedroom. Her mother assures her that no matter what she dreams tonight, she will be close and that she is loved. “So tucked into bed, with a world in your head and a ceiling of stars up above, wherever you go, I just want you to know you are safe, you are home, you are loved.”
The illustrations provided by Anuska Allepuz are nothing short of stunning. They are colorful, yet muted, which gives a dreamy texture to all the adventures. What I really loved about the illustrations is that there are little details in the pictures. Young children will enjoy finding the little animals hidden throughout the pages. There is also a rhythmic nature to the text which practically lulls the reader (parent or child!) to sleep.
A beautiful and lyrical picture book that captures the essence of bedtime and dreams. Aside from the well paced and rhythmic melody of the words, the book transports you to so many different and magical worlds. The illustrations are equally beautiful and it's a favourite of my children at bedtime. One of the best picture books I've ever bought. Highly recommended.
