An exciting, fast-paced emotional follow-up to the first book in the series.
Book one hooked me on The Hybrid Chronicles and book two exceeded expectations as a sequel. I love the dark development of Lenna's character as she deals with the death of her Papa and actively seeks revenge on the Guild members responsible. Vernon handles this with grace as she explores the deep, dark desires of the human mind as it tries to come to terms with such devastating loss.
But the book is far from a downer as it retains and builds on the humorous aspects of the story set up in book one; Lenna's relationships with her closest friends are by now well-established and the development of these relationships is beautiful and heart-warming. Her friends are her anchors and they keep her from losing herself to revenge. There are some truly beautiful moments showcasing the brighter side of life even when facing so much turmoil and strife. I need a Sofia and Ekon in my life!
Plus, some intriguing new characters are introduced, creating some riveting, and some hilarious moments that had me laughing out loud.
It was interesting watching Lenna continue her training at the Guild while hiding her revenge plot and still furthering the plot. I liked seeing her carry out normal guild missions which give a taste of what life is like for those not involved in the corruption of the guild. I love that we get a sense of life outside of the main plot of the story, showing a fully-developed world that still contains secrets waiting to be discovered.
There's so much I could write about here but the part that really blew me away was the ending; the last few chapters which brim with action that kept me rooted to my sofa and stopped me getting up even to refill my coffee. I HAD to get to the end because it was so intense I needed to find out what was going to happen next!
Vernon deals with the difficult topic of mental health, not through the main character (Lenna) directly but by showing the struggle of Sofia - and in this way she shows the response of a person (Lenna) who doesn't understand mental health herself, but who does her best to listen and to help her friend who needs her. This is one of the best showcasing of the right way to help someone through a struggle which you don't understand yourself that I've ever read, and it touched me deeply. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried, for all the right reasons. It felt validating and was a pleasure to read.
Then, the climax which has been building for a while breaks. Lenna faces off against her most hated enemy and the whole scene is so tense, fierce, and powerful that I had literal chills. It's everything I wanted and more. I finished reading it a few hours ago but I'm still in awe of the finesse with which Vernon culminates the tensions of the past two books - while also showing that the plot is even bigger than it first seemed and that there is still much to explore, leaving me desperate to read the third book as soon as it comes out.
