The "Last Remains" storyline is so huge, it cannot be contained within the pages of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN! And Kindred's assault is so epic, it's going to sweep up the other spider-heroes of the Marvel Universe in its wake. Miles Morales, Gwen "Ghost-Spider" Stacy, Silk, Spider-Woman and more are about to be inducted in the Order of the Web - and they have to somehow find a way to help Peter Parker! But a life-altering bombshell is rolling towards one of Marvel fandom's favorite characters, and someone is on the group's trail that is not going to make their quest easy...
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Nick Spencer is a comic book writer known for his creator-owned titles at Image Comics (Existence 2.0/3.0, Forgetless, Shuddertown, Morning Glories), his work at DC Comics (Action Comics, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents), and for his current work at Marvel Comics (Iron Man 2.0, Ultimate Comics: X-Men).
The Marvel team claimed that Nick Spencer's Last Remains story was so bit it needed the main volume Amazing Spider-Man Vol 11. Last Remains to cover Spider-Man's adventure and this volume to chart the story of the Order of the Spider, MJ... and Norman Osborn the Green Goblin. For me this volume just stretched out the mediocrity. Norman Osborn appears to have been cleansed of his 'sins' and seeking some sort of redemption urges MJ to intervene between Spidey and Kindred, as she is the only person who can. Meanwhile the neat idea of a Spider powers team has it's first bug hurdle... they have been recast as demons and are set on destroying New York! 5 out of 12.. some great, truly great ideas, but weak and what to mean felt like almost lazy execution. 2022 read
This companion book to the Last Remains story that ran through The Amazing Spider-Man issues 50 to 55 collects the issues numbered 50LR to 54LR, which were 'half' issues taking place between the main chapters of the story.
By the editor's own description, these were supposed to be inessential; nice bonus material but not necessary if you just wanted to read the main book. The reason I'm docking this book a star is because I don't think this statement is true. There were some pretty big story beats in these 'half' issues, that I feel were absolutely essential to the story, particularly in issues 50LR and 54LR.
As for the story itself, I'll talk about that in my 'review' of the core book (see below)...
Completely superfluous to the Last Remains story. It's the Order of the Web (the other Spider related superheroes) plus Black Cat and Dr. Strange running around while Spider-Man does his own thing in Last Remains. If you didn't read this, it would take nothing away from the main story.
I think it’s criminal these issues were not included in the volume 11 collection of Amazing Spider-Man (2018) there are many threads missing from that volume that were present here.
I read these in single issues and that do flesh out a number of threads clearing up slight confusions in issues 54 and 55. And on top of that these are well drawn and pretty good issues.
I’m back and forth on the end of Sin eater here. His actual ending is good but his last plot of hunting Morlun down and dealing with his followers was probably my least favorite part of this book.
Mary Jane kicks ass, Norman is pretty interesting here, and the Spider clan being possessed by demons is mostly done through the issues included here.
Solid read that should have been included in the main volume.
While Spider-Man's away, the mice will play - and in this case, the mice are the Order Of The Web! As Kindred tears Peter Parker's body a new one, Spider-Woman, Ghost Spider, Miles Morales, Spider-Girl, and Madam Web go astral to save Peter's soul! Plus - the Black Cat, Doctor Strange, the Sin Eater, and...Morlun?!
Last Remains had a lot going on, so much so that it spilled over into these .LR issues. They're a little like the Hunted .HU issues back during that storyline, but they're a bit more separated; you don't strictly need to read these in order to enjoy Last Remains, but they definitely enhance the main story, and they're all one big story rather than individual villain vignettes like the .HU issues were.
I'm a big fan of spider-team-ups like this (Web Warriors, I miss you so), and having all these conflicting points of view in one book is fun to read. Madam Web is suitably cryptic, Ghost-Spider is deeper than she's been in years, and Spider-Woman's just here to hit things, which is fine and dandy too. Pitting them against the Sin Eater and Morlun feels like punching above their paygrade, but it all plays out fairly nicely overall.
The majority of the artwork here is Federico Vincentini, who is a fairly new face to comics but pulls out some gorgeous artwork here. I think he was involved in the Sins Rising arc of ASM before, but he really comes into his own here, to the point I was disappointed to see Takeshi Miyazawa filling in near the back end of the story.
As a companion piece, this volume stops a little short of essential in terms of story, but is definitely worth a read if you're enjoying Amazing Spider-Man right now; it's more of the same, from a slightly different perspective, and what's wrong with more of a good thing?
This is a companion piece and is actually okayish, stories ranging from whatever happened to other spider characters and what made them be this way and like focusing on Dr Strange and the return of Morlun and whatever goes on with the Sin-eater and once he learns of the truth of Harry, its epic! Though most issues felt fillers, others were important to be read along with and the focus on MJ and GG in the end issue was awesome! The art was decent for the most part but the dialogues somewhere felt corny but despite it is still good!
This easily could’ve been five but I feel like it’s justified to leave a star out due to how this was collected. This should’ve been apart of the main collection. Marvel events are weird there are tie-ins that aren’t necessary to the story and stand alone but this isn’t the case. Each part takes place after an issue of the main story so it should be collected as such so people reading this don’t have to swap between books. That being said I really enjoyed this, the stories focus on Peter’s allies it’s pretty essential to the main story these are basically other parts that line up the characters for the big finale. I really love seeing the Spider-Fam interact they are definitely marvel’s answer to DC’s batfam. We rarely ever get to see them team up so it was nice.
"Last Remains" felt like it was badly paced and like it left out crucial details related to characters such as the Web Squad and the Sin Eater. It turns out that that's because they're in this Companion, which holds the interstitial issues about the Web Squad and Mary Jane.
This was positioned as non-necessary to the core arc, just details, and that's very much not the case, because they're crucial details about people entering and leaving and entering the main narrative.
But this isn't a complete and coherent story either. If I hadn't read "Last Remains" a week or two ago, it would have been incomprehensible.
Why not just include this in a large collection with the rest of the story? I dunno. But it's a mess, which is a shame because there are some good character moments here. (My suspicion is that there's just no good way to read "Last Remains" because these interstitial stories are simultaneously totally superfluous and entirely required.)
All this stuff just … happens. Spider-people are possessed and then they’re just suddenly … not. Norman Osborn is contrite and helpful and then he’s just suddenly evil again for no reason. Explaining things or justifying things is not Nick Spencer’s strong suit. It’s kind of shit, to be honest.
This collection contains a series of tie-in issues to the "Last Remains" storyline that was happening in the main "Amazing" title. I read that whole story without these issues, and didn't feel like I was missing anything. To be honest, I skimmed through this collection because I wasn't that interested in monster versions of the Spider Family. With that being said, this did give some more context to things, especially related to MJ. Because of I love the original "Spider-Verse" story, I was happy to see Morlun around in this book (which was teased in the main story, but with no pay off there).
If some day, down the road, I'm reading Spider-Books, and I feel like I'm missing something, or maybe I didn't fully read something from this era of "Amazing," I may want to consider giving this a more in-depth read.
The side stuff to a bigger event…that feels like some Stuff that hit the cutting room floor…oh that happened to that person, oh that’s where they went…but not important enough to hit the main story.
3.5 Stars. The epic "Last Remains" Spidey storyline obvious spilled outside of the main title, and we have those issues here. The Order of the Web (Madame Web, Ghost Spider, Miles Morales, Silk and Spider-Woman) becomes corrupted by Kindred's influence and fights against Spidey (I'll talk more about that in the main title review.) Black Cat and Doctor Strange get involved and it also contains an epic battle between Sin-Eater and Morlun! Overall, a nice tie-in but not absolutely necessary to understand the main story. Recommend for completionists or anyone who wants a different, less Spidey-centric version of the story.
So this literally was a companion book that further fleshes out what happened to the other Spider heroes when they were overtaken by Kindred's dark abilities and started rampaging across the city. This would have made a bit more sense in the main Last Remains book, maybe, since that story suffered a bit from this part not being there.
This side story on its own is not the most powerful one and doesn't quite feel like it really works independently. It connects well to the main arc, even the bits with Mary Jane and Norman Osborne. But beyond that, it feels a little wobbly.
Decent but not groundbreaking or truly revelatory. The bulk of the action remains in the Amazing Spider-Man arc.
As a stand alone, these aren't essential reading. These are just the 'LR' tagged issues they released. Apparently the overall storyline was so packed, they couldn't fit it in the main titles. I'm guessing that Marvel will, at some point, collect these with the actual storyline and give everyone the 'Last Remains' omnibus.
Like Madame Webb stories and more Webslingers, Orb Warriors? (whatever they call themselves now) This will give you a taste of things. Maybe pick up an actual book like Spider-Geddon or the Spider-verse. You'll get your fill of webslingers there.
I just don't understand the editorial and writing decisions here. The issues collected here add to the Last Remains story and makes you wonder why they weren't part of that collection. That being said, this wasn't a good book. There were so many random characters acting randomly with their actions not meaning anything. The entire Last Remains story could have been good but the execution was pretty terrible. So many questions. The art here was good but it couldn't save the story. Overall, not a storyline that will be remembered fondly.
With these issues, Last Remains almost starts to feel like a story, rather than one bloated scene - begging the question of why it wasn't just released as one big collection in the first place. Spencer seems to have gone past 'writing for the trade' into 'writing for the omnibus', such that now even five issues feels like the merest fragment of a reading experience.
An actually decent tie-in volume, with each issue focusing on members of the Spider-fam. It is best to read each numbered issue after the ASM issue of the same numbering for this event Last Remains .

This book definitely filled in some gaps from "The Last Remains" story line. It was interesting to get more time with the other characters and see what they were up to while Peter was fighting Kindred.
As far as companions go, this was pretty good. It has a direct connection to the main story and the presence of all the spider people enhances this arc a lot. Very good art too.
