New York Times and USA Today bestseller Vicki Lewis Thompson believes love makes the world go around and laughter makes the trip worth taking. The recipient of RWA’s Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award and the author of more than ninety books, Vicki pioneered a new kind of romance hero with Nerd in Shining Armor. Following the success of her nerd stories, Vicki launched a boisterous paranormal series featuring a matchmaking witch and wizard, an ADD dragon named George, and a black cat inspired by her own precocious feline, Eve.
Once again a decent story is set up and most of it is executed very well. But then at the end the conflict is just waved away with no explanation and suddenly the story is over. 🤷♀️
In Strong-Willed Cowboy, Vicki Lewis Thompson goes back to the Buckskin Ranch where Rafe Banner is nursing a broken heart. He’s head over heels for Kate Gifford, but a bad marriage and a worse divorce have made Kate determined to never marry again. After a terrible fight about Kate’s marriage issues, they stop speaking to one another, so Rafe’s pretty surprised to get a text from her saying it’s urgent she sees him. He’s even more surprised when he finds out what Kate wants. Her baby sister has been accepted to medical school, and their wealthy aunt is willing to pay her tuition under one condition— Kate has to get married again. At first, Rafe rejects the idea, but when he finds out she plans to advertise in the local paper for a husband, he agrees to marry her, even if it’s in name only. It breaks Rafe’s heart to know that he won’t be spending his wedding night (not to mention the rest of his life) with the woman he loves, but he can’t let Kate down. But when Kate’s aunt makes a surprise appearance at their wedding, their plans have to change, and suddenly Rafe finds himself taking his new bride back to her cottage for their wedding night. Could her aunt’s unexpected visit give Rafe to the opportunity to make Kate his wife for real?
Several of the characters in this series have struggled with the idea of long term commitments, but Ms. Thompson always finds a new twist to keep the plot lines unique and interesting. In Kate’s case, Ms. Thompson gives Kate an extremely realistic reason for not wanting to marry again. A nasty divorce following a less than stellar marriage would be enough to make anyone think twice about making herself that vulnerable again. I appreciate when authors give their characters realistic and genuine motivations for their actions. I find it hard to connect with characters when I can’t really get inside their heads. That isn’t an issue in this book, and I can sympathize with both Kate and Rafe. Rafe doesn’t discount Kate’s bad experience; he just wants her to consider that a marriage to him doesn’t have to be a repeat of her first marriage. But although Rafe has moments when he lets his heartbreak get the best of him, in the end, he always manages to keep Kate’s feelings in mind and tries to do what’s best for her. Ms. Thompson depicts both of these characters in ways that make it easy to feel compassion for both of them.
This book also really shows off the strength of the family ties on the Buckskin Ranch, which I enjoy. Despite a lack of blood ties, the men of the Buckskin Brotherhood have formed a family just as strong as the McGavins in Ms. Thompson’s previous series, and Henri is definitely just as much their mother as Kendra is the McGavin men’s mother. I love how Henri immediately steps in to help Rafe and Kate plan (and pay for!) their wedding. And I especially enjoy when Henri comes up against Kate’s Aunt Lilith. Nobody is going to interfere with her kids, and Henri has no problem putting the snooty Lilith in her place (with a little help from the other Babes). Henri’s actions in this book demonstrate her fierce love for the Brotherhood and their chosen partners. But one of the most important family members doesn’t appear in this book, except in memory. Henri’s husband Charley helped make these men who they are today, and his presence is felt throughout this book. The incredibly touching scene where Rafe takes Kate for a root beer float after they get their marriage license and he reminisces about going to that same restaurant with Charley, Henri, and his brothers proves that DNA doesn’t make a family— love does.
I could say so much more about this book, but I think a review should probably be shorter than the book itself! Needless to say, I highly recommend Strong-Willed Cowboy and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I received an ARC of this book from the author, but that didn’t influence my review.
It is difficult to describe how much I love Rafe. He got my attention from the first time he spoke up in this series, and I have been waiting to get his book. As sweet and gentlemanly as all the men of the Buckskin Brotherhood are, Rafe still has something special that makes him my favorite. And it is a good thing because Kate needs a man just like him. Kate was emotionally scarred by her first husband, and she has been very clear that she will never marry again. But she is exactly the kind of person who will put her own needs aside for her family. She has to help her sister, and Rafe is the obvious choice. He will understand that it is just for show, right? She knows that she is asking a lot of him, but Rafe is strong enough to handle it. I love a good marriage of convenience story, and this one is very unique. In the first place, Rafe has already proposed before the book starts and been rejected because of Kate's feelings about marriage (not her feelings about Rafe himself). Instead of the typical we're-friends-pretending-to-be-more, there is already a recognized love that is now trying to be friends. That provides a special tension, and I couldn't quit turning pages. Of course, the rest of the Brotherhood and their wives are on hand to help, and the Babes are there with all their support. It was very moving, and my heart melted along with Kate's. There is just so much genuine love and true friendship in these groups. No spoilers, but I have to say that the ending was precisely what I hoped would happen. This is a very satisfying book all the way around, and I enjoyed every page.
A great addition to the series with perfect flow between the books.
I totally loved and understood Rafe's response when he heard Kate was going to pick any old guy to marry. I love that he stepped up because we all know how horrible it is to see someone you like interested in someone else or even talking about dating someone else (or maybe we don't all know? But I sure do, except I wasn't as forward and brave as Rafe because I'm a chicken and it hasn't worked out well in the past. I kind of hinted it this week but it was very general so really I could have been just generally talking).
I love how Thompson's books somehow always align with where I am in life (buying a house, starting a new job, etc). But I guess that's the magic of books and everyone relating to a little piece of the tale that's relevant to them.
Maybe one day I'll be as brave as Rafe and make a bold move to tell someone I like them (ha ha).
My personal life aside, I love how this story seemed like it just effortlessly came together (and worked so well) similar to Rafe and Kate's wedding! I also love how the bit about sperm motility followed through till the end!
I would have loved the cover of this book to be Rafe's post-wedding look (with the undoing of his vest and shirt ahahaha) but since it wasn't you definitely need to read the book for that visual!
Overall, a great guilty pleasure escape from the world.
Thank you Thompson for the ARC (I got to this one late, so if you're looking to read it, it's already out!)
Rafe Banner doesn't like how weird things are between he and Kate since he proposed to her after the Apple Grove Auction. They feel like they've somehow grew apart. He never sees Kate at the friendly gatherings The Buckskin Brothers throw anymore.
Kate Gifford is full of panic as she finds out there is a clause to her sister getting assistance for going to college. She wants things to be great for her sister but marrying someone just to get half the tuition and fees isn't what Kate expected. And how could she pull it off?
There are many ways Kate has decided to go about this once she asked her one previous guy crush about marrying her and he gives suggestions as he stalks off in frustration. So now Kate must execute a plan fast before her sister's school starts.
The warmth of this story is top-notch. There are so many supporters coming together for fun surprises all throughout this book that you will see it is a true delight. The scenes in each private month Rafe and Kate have are forever etched in my mind as passion goes both ways, in and out of the bedroom.
Watching the plot thicken with such an amazing story line is what had me reading this book multiple times. It's five stars and a fun ride while bringing you to tears of pain and joy all in a matter of hours. I gave an honest review in exchange of a an ARC of this novel!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is the fifth book in this series. I believe that they can be read as standalone stories, but there are so many secondary characters that it is a little hard to keep up with them all. This is Rafe and Kate’s story.
Rafe is a standup gentleman who has loved Kate from the first time he met her two years ago. Kate moved to this town to start over after a bad divorce and has no intention of remarrying. Rafe and Kate have had an estranged friendship for two months resulting from the bachelors auction, a failed proposal and a love that is not returned. Avoiding each other has been difficult considering they both work on the ranch and have the same friends. Now Kate needs Rafe and although it is against his better judgment he jumps in to help her.
This story has missing pieces for sure. The bachelor auction and Kate’s divorce are very minimally mentioned. Considering they are big parts of this story, a bit more detail would have been beneficial to this overall storyline. I really liked Rafe and his loyalty, but there were times I felt Kate didn’t deserve it. They both love each other and it is very hard to get behind Kate, especially with her reason for needing Rafe.
This book has sexy time, tons of secondary characters, an Aunt who is awful and an ok ending. I will say that Rafe has been my favorite character so far. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Once again, we are back at the Buckskin Ranch with the “boys” Henri and Charley took under their wings. In this fifth installation of the series, the story belongs to Rafe Banner. The man who two months ago propose to Kate , the rancher’s cook, and she quickly turned him down. Destroying the friendship but not the love he still has for her. But Kate’s experience with a cheating ex, has her running from relationships and marriage. That is, until desperate circumstances call for desperate measures. She wants her younger sister to go to med school and the only way she can accomplish it is if she follows her rich aunt’s stipulations. Marry and stay married for the next 4 years and then the money will be available. Imagine the reaction of Rafe when Kate proposes. But what will happen to Rafe’s heart if he says yes and later she leaves him? WIll he risk his heart? Will he be able to convince her that he is not her ex and that they could have a life together? Though I never warmed up to Kate, it was Rafe that won me over . He was the “heart” of the story. A man of honor who would be willing to sacrifice himself to help the one he loved. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Not a bad story about sacrificing one's life for another.
Rafe had proposed to Kate and she rejected his offer of a real marriage. Kate had a bad first marriage and she wasn't going there again until Aunt Lilith agreed to cover Ginny's medical school expenses. But there are strings attached to this one. Kate needed to repair her scandalous divorce by finding a new husband.
"Rafe, will you marry me?" "What's the catch?" "It would be in name only, to satisfy Aunt Lilith until Ginny gets her degree." "No Kate, I won't. You rejected my offer of a real marriage. Find another sucker. I'm not available."
Rafe was furious, offended, hurt, and thoroughly disgusted with Kate.
Kate was going to put an ad in the newspaper advertising for a husband but Rafe didn't like that idea because she didn't know what kind of guy she was going to get. He wouldn't let fer got through with it. He was more concerned about some guy in love with her. Rafe headed back to Kate's.
"I'll do it Kate. I'll marry you."
Find out what happened with Rafe and Kate and the help they had from their friends to put together a nice little wedding. My next book to read: Sweet Love'n Cowboy (Billionaire Cowboys of Lone Star Texas Book 1) by Hope Moore. Happy Reading
Rafe Banner fell for Kate two years ago when she was hired at the Buckskin Ranch and they were great friends until Rafe opened up about his feelings for her.
Now, Kate Gifford needs his help with a 'small' favor that would ensure her sister's college tuition would be paid for by her self centered, rich aunt.
As they work on this plan, true feelings come to the service, but will they allow stubbornness to take over and ruin what they have both longed for?
Vicki Lewis Thompson never disappoints and I wouldn't lying if I said I shed a few tears over this one. I actually squealed when I saw she included one of my favorite country singer's #1 songs!
This honest review is written after receiving an advanced reader copy of this wonderful book!
Strong-Willed Cowboy (The Buckskin Brotherhood, #5) by Vicki Lewis Thompson This book can be read as a stand-alone ..but Rafe and Kate's story stared in #4 TRUE-BLUE COWBOY when Rafe proposed to Kate and she turned him down. Now she needs a husband so her wealthy aunt will pay for her sister's medical school. There are plenty of feels, happy, sad, hurt, angst, and plenty of steam all getting us to our HEA. Can't wait for the next book. ( I love the Buckskin Brotherhood)
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Tear-jerker Funny Wonderful characters Happily Ever After Steamy Page-turner Easy-to-read Romantic Entertaining Great world building
Another well-written cowboy romance packed with emotion that you can feel. Rafe is driven and very upfront about his feelings for Kate, I love that about him. Kate is really sweet, she's just relationship-shy, their marriage of convenience is actually what they need to clear the fog. Delightful story that does an excellent job with the intricacies of friends daring to want more if they are willing to take a chance. Love the community unity that clearly believe in showing and don't mind helping without asking, very supportive. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Things have not been right between Rafe and Kate since the Bachelor Auction but her baby sister going to Medical School and planning to take out huge loans, inspires an idea to wrest the money from the girls’ aunt. Rafe’s role is central to the idea’s success but will a lifetime of hurt or happiness be the outcome? A bad experience has left Kate with an inability to trust in the sanctity of marriage, Rafe has to teach her that it is the individuals involved that make the difference. An enjoyable hot cowboy romp. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I want to move to Apple Grove and be friends with the people who live there. I LOVE this series and the people in it. The older generation of fiesty seniors. As well as the younger generation of good hearted, decent people who treat one another with respect and loyalty. I have enjoyed each book in this series, so VERY much. The romances are sweet, and smoking hot, all at the same time. The dialog is often laugh out loud funny. Handsome cowboys who make you laugh, and provide happily ever afters. What more could you ask for? I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I hope there is a book for EVERY couple in Apple Grove.
What a joy to read this sweet, sizzling, romantic story about Rafe and Kate. It was full of surprises from the Babes to the Brotherhood and to the relationship that Rafe and Kate had agreed to. I felt sorry for Kate about her Aunt Lilith but the Babes seem to know how to deal with her.
It was such fun to read and root for Rafe at the same time. I really liked their story and I liked how close knit the guys in the brotherhood were. I am ready to put colorful Adirondack chairs around a fire pit after reading about that idea. This is a very fun, entertaining series full of sexy cowboys. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
“Strong Willed Cowboy “(The Buckskin Brotherhood Book 5)
If you have read the other books in this series, you know this author is a great writer,if you haven’t,you don’t know what you’re missing! This is about a dude ranch type with lots of Cowboys and women to run the kitchen etc.All of the employees are great friends, some married to each other, some not. This time Kate and Rafe decided to marry so her spinster aunt would give her sister the money to go to college. But they would just stay friends and after awhile get a divorce,Right, sure. Anyway it’s a really good book and I hope you’ll read it
I loved the will they won't they mystery of This book
When I was a child,/teenager/ young adult my Mom would give me her books to read. She loved Jude Deveroux and other mystery romances and I would read the first chapter and the last one to see if I wanted to read the rest. This book made me do that after Aunt Lilath well I'll leave that to you to discover. Just know you'll laugh, cry get angry and bewildered at and by what you read. I truly loved the Buckskin Brotherhood. And the Babes. Wish I could afford the first 5 books by this author's series.
I loved Rafe and Kate as a couple. At times I wanted to shake Kate so she would wake up and realize that Rafe was nothing like her ex. That shows that VLT is so good at drawing the reader into her stories. Rafe is one of my favorite heroes in this series. He's got all of the qualities of a cowboy hero. It took Kate a while to wake up, but it was worth it. I'm excited to read the next book in the series!
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
Strong-Willed Cowboy (The Buckskin Brotherhood #5)
Cowboy Romance Fluff as light reading.
The gal who refused to marry Rafe now wants a marriage in name only. Way to ruffle the male ego.
Rafe’s mother was a prostitute who had no idea who fathered him. Kate’s first husband abandoned her leaving her with a crushing debt. Her reaction is once bitten twice shy. As they edge toward nuptial bliss their “love-making” is described in detail.
Kate has been burned once with her ex husband and swears she will never marry again. Rafe fell hard for Kate and proposes. She says no and it destroyed their friendship. Now in order to finance her sisters college expenses, Kate asked her aunt to help. Her response, If Kate marries, she will pay the cost of college. Now, Kate is proposing to Rafe to marry her, in name only. Rafe can't say no, but can he change her mind. I won a copy of this book, from the author. This is my honest review.
Recognized some side characters … and then realized I had read at least 2 of the buckskin brothers stories before. I really like this group of characters … and this was a really good one. Burned in prior marriage she might love him, but she won’t marry. Initially, he can’t live with that. Then she needs to marry (not due to kid) and he helps … all of the buckskin men and women do. Really good story. Some steamy scenes to skim if you are not into detailed sex.
I'm not sure which character is more strong-willed: Kate, for sticking to her no marriage rule so long; or Rafe, for not giving up on his love for her. I've been awaiting this book and it does not disappoint. It's hard not to love a story with likable characters and a sweet happy ending. I read an advanced copy of this book
I don’t know if I could’ve been as strong-willed as Rafe. But when you meet the one you have to stick with it. Kate has been hurt badly, but Rafe is not not like her ex. No, these cowboys are old-fashioned gentlemen. While this book doesn’t have explicit sexy times the sensual feel is still there along with lots of angst. Good read.
2 1/2 *stars REALLY. I LOVE ROMANCE BOOKS BUT THIS SEEMED TO BE SO UNREALISTIC AND UNBELIEVABLE, ESPECIALLY SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS. I THOUGHT WHEN THEY WERE TALKING IT SOUNDED UNREALISTIC. THEIR TALK & BEHAVIOR SEEMED VERY JUVENILE TO ME, MUSICAL CHAIRS AND SINGALONGS (huh). IT DID HAVE SOME GREAT LOVE SCENES. ;0
Easy to read with a nice cowboy orientated storyline
SPOILERS I enjoyed this book but felt like the start was very confusing there was no build up or introduction you jumped into their story half way and I felt there was no connection built up. I liked the HEA but felt it was so rushed even the wedding and their time together felt so shallow and simple.
Each book in the series is special. Every character brings something to the table and as a group, it’s always great fun revisiting. I’ve become so accustomed to the characters, it feels like I’m a part of them. This continuing saga between Kate and Rafe definitely heated up. Book gifted to me.
"The [Buckskin] Brotherhood had gathered. For him." It is so exciting to join everyone at the Buckskin Ranch in pulling off a beautiful, quickie wedding. Lots of fun and lovin'. Only two, unattached, Buckskin Brothers left. And, some sexy Buckskin Babes. Who is next?
My favorite of the Buckskin brotherhood, Rafe will capture your heart from the very beginning. The trials and issues this couple face on the way to the HEA will keep you turning the pages and wanting more
Rafe and Kate were amazing together! I can't believe they thought they could be friends and married at the same time. When Rafe walked away, I was heartbroken. But, Ms. Thompson never disappoints with her HEAs. The Brotherhood is alive and the Babes are up to all kinds of tricks! Cannot wait for more!
