“This is our world.” The King and Queen set out with an enormous party of Heroes and Townsfolk to balance the burgeoning Kingdom of Blackmoor and visit a neighboring Town in unknown lands. Far from home, Jack will face new challenges both inside and outside of Subroutine Sana’s Towers that test his ability to lead and make wise decisions.
After loving the first few books, this one really dropped the ball. While I think the shift of focus for the narrative towards kingdom building can be interesting, the execution here is horrible. Every single building is instantly formed upon a town's level increase, and every logistical problem is delegated to Jack's subordinates. Therein lies the problem, where even though a large portion of the book is focused on kingdom building, no actual 'building' of anything is involved, or it is given the most basic of attention.
Furthermore, Jack's 'inspirational' talks to townsfolk (literally patronizingly basic advice) which somehow completely transforms their thinking in an instant is just ridiculous. Everyone seems to adore Jack 'creative' way of thinking, when in reality his ideas are so ludicrously simple, that its almost impossible to think of the townsfolk as anything other than dumb NPCs. Its ironic, because the entire time the series tries to paint the citizens as living and free thinking people, but their illogical actions make them feel more like programmed beings than ever before. Jack himself even starts referring to them as NPCs!
SPOILER AHEAD!
The final nail in the coffin is when the murder happened to the mayor. Its simply unbelievable that Jack doesn't condemn this action at all. His reaction, or non-reaction, is made all the more stark when I consider that just a few pages before, he was harping on about the importance of morality. And of course, god forbid his fellow worshippers Lex and Haylee raise any objection to the murder, because everyone adores Jack! It obvious to me now that the murder of the major was just a lazy plot device to solve the issue of integrating Dovepoint into the kingdom without a proper coherent solution. I'm sad that this series ended up like this, don't think I will be picking up the next book.
A few missed or wrong words... I really like where the story has gone. It seems so long ago poor Jack popped out or in to this world. What I like most about this book is how the world grows, not only in new territory, but in the natives eyes and minds. It is rewarding to see the townsfolk thinking for themselves. The tower as seen through Kron's eyes and the 2 new heroes to the story from the newly entered town. How that very town's inhabitants suddenly started thinking for themselves. And the feeling I got when Jack and crew felt the wind of the sea from their new ship The Embrace. It's like watching friends and family grow up. What I would have like to have seen is Cabe's tower run with Jack and Lex and Haley. His character was interesting (perhaps the most interesting one) but we didn't get to really be a part of it. Plus the book felt it was too short. So a chapter about him climbing once with the crew would have been a nice touch. Also at the end there are a couple maps and I both am glad it's there (for the next books in the series) but also it kind of took the subversiveness out of the story. It did not match with what I imagined it to look like after reading it and having this world in my mind. And going by memory here, but when the people who left the new town, it was mentioned the road leads to Emberstone and Blackwater and if I'm not mistaken said the road splits but in the map it didn't. However I did not go back to read the description again. Finally I like how there is a story just waiting to happen with the supreme mayor and the people who left on their ship. Overall, this was my favorite book in the series as the world grew in so many ways.
When the series started it was about a guy cheating his way up a tower. It was fun. As the world expanded it brought in settlement building and leadership issues. This is where it all went wrong. Two and three were a slow slide but this one bottomed it out. Jack does not lead, he bribes and spouts self help nonsense. When he lets a murderer walk away free and clear, and it helped him out, that was it. The focus on kingdom building is weak and shows the character flaws. It has ruined the story.
Prax Venter does it again. The Irrelevant Jack series is clean, fun, quick, clear, and articulate. I say many of these adjectives intentionally. Too many of the LITRPG authors seem to believe poor word choices (foul language), poor grammar, and a convoluted story line are the norm. They are not! Prax Venter develops the character (s), takes the reader (audience) along the journey, maintains a steady flow and character interaction that drives the reader, and creates a sense of anticipation for more. Irrelevant Jack V cannot come out soon enough. Well done.
A good, clean story of meeting new characters, taking over new towns, team planning and world building. A little game violence here and there.
A fun, easy read. The new characters keep the repetitive actions interesting. Wanted to kill Ror and Pama though just for being love-struck moody terns who like to kill things. It was also nice to meet them and watch them grow so quickly into less annoying characters.
I am waiting for the Subroutine Santa Killer Marked folk to actually be bad, beyond an accidental or well meaning murder. Also there needs to be some method of grace removal.
Sally's seashells was a perfectly placed line. Looking forward to book 5 if I don't forget when it's published.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This entry of Irrelevant Jack felt slower and less fun to me. There was a lot of world building, house keeping, and even some political intrigue. This is especially true for the first half of the novel. Thinking about it, I think there are two main things I love about this series: the crazy imaginative tower and the interesting problem solving. Both elements are placed fairly far in the back seat, here. I’m concerned , because this book feels as though it’s setting up more of the same.
This was one doozy of a 4th book and I loved every second of it. Prax has definitely done it once again Jack and gang had a heck of a ride this time around and cant wait to see what happens next. One of my favorite thing about this book is I love how the world is evolving in its entirety both with people and the shenanigans that are happing the the gang. Not to over shadow the book but between Andrea Parsneau Jeff Hayes and Justin Thomas James who could ask for a better narration cast they truly make the book amazing.
The first book was interesting but a bit patchy, glad to say the writing skills keep improving as the series goes on. Enjoyed this one and can happily recommend this series to all the LitRPG fans out there. Give it a go, you will be pleased !
I am really enjoying discovering the world of Subroutine Sana with Jack and his friends, fellow Heroes and Townsfolk. Great storyline which moves at a fast pace, while still giving good depth to characters and plot development. Thank you and please write more, quickly!😊
Fantasy LitRPG An engaging story, this is book 4 in a series. You could start here, but you will struggle with names, abilities, and relationships. If this looks interesting, start with book 1. I want to talk about all the many things that happen, but that would probably lead to spoilers. Fun story. Highly recommended. Now I want book 5!
I'm interested in reading more. Good pacing, good characters, good literal world building. As always this series has been a fun little treat where a lot happens and it doesn't feel drawn out and the author doesn't feel the need to pull a rocks fall for the "drama". I eagerly await the next book.
He did it again Jack may not be hitting floor 75 soon but the evolving of his kingdom and my personal favorite the uncertain relations with other authorities are genuinely intriguing I can't wait to see what happens next I also kinda want to see if Jack can take someone higher leveled given his more flexible mindset and adaptable range of powers
I have to say that I skipped over this series quite alot over the last few months, only to discover that it more than worth the read. It had a very interesting way leveling and resource management. I will be on the lookout for the next book in the series.
This volume feels a bit more of a filler. While Jack expands, and runs a little bit of Tower, there's not really much happening. There's a few secondary characters coming and going, and you finally get some potential thread going, but that's for a future volume rather than this one.
While the story starts simple in book 1 it has been slowly growing in complexity. I have a feeling Jack is going to see how heavy the head that wears the crown truly is in the next book. I can't wait to read it and more so I'll be looking forward to the audiobook
It's hard to consider Jack, our hero, to be Irrelevant when he brings so much good to an evil land. He is training a video game world how to cheat the system that has been in place for thousands of 'games' years and bot everyone is on board with the changes, but changes are happening.
Another fun read and there is still 1 more to go. 😊
But will they be able to defeat their worst enemy? Complacency.
The exciting conclusion is worth the hype. More Cheesing the system, more allies, more tools, but more enemies as well. Something that shouldn't be an enemy.
As always the SBT team knocks it out of the park. Seriously, there's a duet. A FREAKING DUET!!!! Absolutely phenomenal work again!
I just read this book in one sitting, in roughly 4 hours. I couldn’t stop. It’s just more of the same awesome the previous entries were, but with higher stakes and more... everything.
More goodness from Prax! The addition of building out against the corruption by liberating towns is awesome. However I am happy to report the insane tower realms keep coming! I reccomend this series to anyone who enjoys gamelit or fantasy!
Was cool to see parts of the system that were talked about actually happening. Also cool to see the folks learning new thing on their own instead of it being pointed out to them.
This was an excellent addition to the series. There is good character development and world building. I like that they spent less time in the tower and more exploring their world. I’m looking forward to book 5.
This one book is fantastic adventure from start to end. It’s a tower climbing where heroes must defeat monsters and loot each floor to get stronger. If not, the “corruption” will destroy their very world!
I was so engage from the moment I turned the first page. The adventure, world building, town building, how the MC isn’t crazy OP and team work is the key in getting better stronger.
More tower fun! Jack visits some new places, meets new people. The story moves forward. I like the light fairly simple systems in the book and the small world. Soon to be larger. Easy reading. Not much gore.
Author has outdone himself again. Fantastic entry to the series and immensely disappointed when I read the last chapter, knowing it will be another long wait for book 5.
Always a fun, light read with irrelevant jack. Interesting to see new hero paths and kingdom building. Can’t wait to see if there’s a inter hero war function as well as the usual fight the corruption
Irrelevant Jack 4 is a well done sequel. It manages to keep the over-story moving without slowing the characters growth, or giving unsustainable power ups. If you have liked the story so far, you will enjoy this one.
Overall a fun addition, the ending came quickly and would have likes to know more about Pinefall. Tower climbs are kinda getting old, but one per book moving forward would be a kind diversion. Excited to heas r about the rest of the map!
I have enjoyed this whole series and am waiting for the next installment. Enjoyed the map at the end, hopefully you will continue to update as more territory is claimed.
Kingdom building more the tower but we still get a few tower runs. However, I have enjoyed the kingdom building aspect as much as the town building. Though I’m hopeful that we’ll see a town level increase at the cove next book.
