It's Eighth Year and Draco Malfoy is just trying to graduate. Valentine's Day is today and the last thing he wants to do is think about someone he'll never deserve. When someone slips Granger and Ancient Roman lust potion, he punches a Seventh Year in the face, finds out she's quite responsive, gains forgiveness, and discovers that he really should pursue a career in Potions. Not necessarily in that order.
This was my first damione fic, and I must say it impressed me. I was looking for something not too lengthy and with a considerably good writing style. In the search for a good fanfiction to get me started in this almost sub-genre that is dramione, I've seen this particular one recommended a few times.
The story takes off during the 8th year in post-Wizarding War Hogwarts, inside the Slytherin common room, where we are presented almost immediately with our problem. Two Slytherin 7th years plan on drugging Hermione Granger to get back at her for giving them a months detention. Draco Malfoy, overhearing their plot, now has to decide to act according to his values or let the situation unfold and let the one he fancies get hurt. Though the prospects of being pushed away by her are high, Draco still promises to protect her from harm, even if she hates him. As the day goes on, Draco and Hemione's relationship gets forced into a new position, much more intimate and personal than they had ever had before. They interact much more in the first chapter alone than they did in the entire book series. We get to see Draco struggling with his past and trying to separate who he was and who he is now, often turning back to the thought of "what would Malfoy do?". He sees himself as someone unworthy of receiving kindness or having the luxury of self-fulfilment. In his attempt at aiding Hermione through the effects of Cupere, Draco finds himself in a position he's not accustomed to, giving rather than taking. This fanfiction falls into the enemies-to-lovers trope, with the classic troubled man with a dark past, an intelligent woman that can see the goodness in him nonetheless and an unlikely situation that forces them to interact with one another.
The chapters are so engaging that the author makes it easy to forget that over 150k words are making up her work. There is no rush for the plotline to get to the smut, despite it being a contingency to the obstacle Hermione is forced to withstand. The pace was also something I found very well constructed. While trying to survive the day in the effects of Cupere, the day stretches itself impossibly long, building tension with the possibility of accidents and Grangers increasing vulnerability. Nevertheless, the personality and behaviour of the characters seem off at times. Hermione, for example, is very known for following the rules and respecting the hierarchy, thus would never address a professor by their first name. McGonagall and Hermione never had a relationship of the sort; barely seeing each other or exchanging much besides academics, their dynamic remains teacher and student. Granger's personality also seems to be notably grounded on the author and their interests, her ability to speak Japanese, for instance. This self-insertion is a sort of literary technique called "author surrogate". That may work for original characters, but in this case, it seems unnecessary and overall implausible. The scene in Professor McGonagall's office is very flawed. Ron, as we know, is very jealous and protective of Hermione, especially towards Malfoy. I expected to see a different reaction from him seeing the girl he used to date and their school rival in the same room. Harry appears only for the sake of the golden trio, proving himself pretty useless in this scene. Towards the end of the chapter, McGonagall deliberately uses Veritaserum, a potion very rigidly administered by Ministry officials, something very out of character for her, as she is not of the likes of Dolores Umbridge. The hint of Professor McGonagall fancying Mr Filch was dissident to their relationship; the two hardly interact through the series, and when they've done it, Minerva shows gross dislike to his person. I found the ending to be quite pleasing. We get closure on the boys who drugged Hermione; she and Draco admit their feelings for one another as well as establish that they are in a relationship and, with Hogwarts last year coming to an end, both of them have prospects for the future. Additionally, I liked Draco's career choice, as he was indeed quite skilled in potions, following a much different path from his father at the Ministry of Magic. For those looking for a smut fix in the finale, the epilogue delivers, though it falls short on the plot. The trauma of that day resurfaces, which is not implausible even after years, but the resolvent for this seems to be only an excuse to push for smut. We are left questioning, was the issue resolved? Was that approach the best way to intervene? Couldn't their first "attempt" cause more trauma, as Draco is supposed to be someone whom she trusts and finds comfort in? Wasn't the limit between dominance and abused crossed? How does their relationship change after this?
The theme of consent is an integral part of the story, a matter taken, thankfully, more seriously in the 21st century. The goal is to show how it makes any contact, especially intimate ones, more enjoyable and safer. Throughout the fic, I've noticed that multiple times Hermione responds: "I consent". While being a perfectly fine form of verbal consent, it's also very formal. That's why so many people say it "turns them off", but it doesn't have to be this way. It can add to the attraction by asking: "Can I do this to you?" "Is this okay?" "Do you like when I/want me to do this?" "Tell/Show me how", for instance.
HoneySweetCutie made a great first impression with their originality and writing style, making me glad to have begun exploring the dramione sub-genre with their work. I look forward to seeing what else this author has to offer.
I really don't see why people love this fic so much, I found it very repetitive and depressing.
The events of the story were the same over and over again but each time in different locations. There was no character growth, no progression in their relationship (they go through the exact same thing in each chapter) and no real conclusion.
Draco's mental health is abysmal and his self loathing is pretty intense. Even though Hermione tells him that he is the only option to help her and he makes sure that he has her consent every time, he goes back to hating himself the moment they are done. He thinks he takes advantage of her and he wants to punish himself for enjoying, helping her get there.
Hermione doesn't really help his mental health with her attitude. Even though she is the one to ask for his help each time, she makes sure to let him know that it is out of necessary and that she basically doesn't want this, only fueling his self hatred.
I found this story very triggering and had to stop a few times to calm myself down. The pacing was very slow. The story was very repetitive. I don't understand why we had to go through the "we shouldn't be doing this, this is the last time I'm helping you", over and over again. Either help her or don't. The situation didn't change at all so why do we have to go through the same thing in each chapter, just to add angst?
Thoughts: • this was a reread for me from a couple years ago & I honestly forgot just how beautiful the writing is • the author does a fabulous job of making you understand & feel for both characters in an impossible situation where it would be easy to dislike them both • one of my favorite & most canonically honest variations of fanfiction Draco & Hermione • very spicy in all the best ways • while the characters/relationship can be toxic to each other, that’s a trope that I enjoy especially within HP fanfiction, their action are motivated by deep character development • the plot really moves w the characters propelling the action

Dramione fanfiction is an absolute guilty pleasure of mine…and there are some real gems out there. This one is definitely in that group.
I have paid money for books that didn’t have the level of poetry in the prose of this book.
Is it melodramatic and ridiculously spicy and totally bananas? Yes. But was it also beautifully written and a total train wreck I couldn’t look away from? Again, yes.
If I had any complaints I would say that I didn’t LOVE Hermione in this book…she was a little too wishy washy and all over the place and Draco was a little heavy handed with the self loathing and obsessive worshipping of Hermione. But at least his character stayed consistent. Sad, contrite, desperate Draco is a favorite of mine I cannot lie.
I don’t know…without the irritating character traits and the messy nonsensical arguments and misunderstandings this book wouldn’t have been the same so I guess I don’t really mind them….but if the author wasn’t so skilled I would have found it irksome.
It was also so nice to read fanfiction that has a clearly written beginning, middle and end and didn’t rattle on for 350,000 words. This one can be read in a day or two and i appreciate that so much.
Lastly: I have never read a book with so many orgasms and very little actual sex. That was a new one for me 😂😂
Basically a perfect Dramione. Protective Draco. A little D/S. Some fun with praise. Non-con Love Potion. Theo Nott/Pansy play small roles (honestly the only downside)
Man I loved this book it's a shame I can't read the rest of it. Unfortunately only 10 chapters are on wattpad and can't seem to find the rest anywhere.
repetitive, sad for the sake of sadness, boring plot, boring characters... in conclusion it is extremely long only to keep repeating the same situations.
Spicy. Forced proximity, enemies to lovers, touch her and die. Loved this story. Draco protects and even helps Hermione when his slytherin pals slip her lust potion in her breakfast.. it last for 48 hours and she asked draco to to "help" her
liked this fic. Not a favorite though. Hermione was also really annoying and Draco was sweet but also kinda annoying too. It was enjoyable to read but I won’t reread it.
