Excellent world building that peels with the plot to keep a non-sci-fi reader also engaged.

The author has an effortless delivery style that doesn't wear one down even though the story is complex and has many supernatural exits. It is a dystopian delight that illustrates class divide with a panoramic view.

Main protagonist in book 1 of this series is Kaleigha. She is timid in the start and compliant with the voices in her head. I enjoyed the conversations she has with herself and the voices. It gave an interesting look into her psyche and perceptions. Felder was another strong character that had layered significance. He came off as a loving father only to flip to a monster and then again to a subdued one. He exchanged personalities to suit his agenda. I could relate to that as we unknowingly conform ourselves to our benefit without realizing. Characters like Mantua and Egoly were doing nothing but being true to themselves or trying to survive. And in doing so, it didn't always please the others.

I was very invested in knowing how Kaleigha would handle her improvised situation. Even though her turn of fate was unexpected, it pointed to the reality that we may never come to terms with. Which is, what is an ending? Is it death or something beyond? Do we have a purpose or just fall puppets to another more dominating driving force? I was compelled to ask these questions when failing to absorb the conclusion. It did make me happy to see Kaleigha shine before her light went out.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It is a well written story with much creativity.

Kaleigha - a girl with a spiritual connection to the dead - comes from poverty, and has learnt to fend for herself in her dystopian city. She’s tough, so when her absent father shows up and drops a bomb on her, she handles the situation with strength and fierceness.
The world she lives in, and what happens after you die, isn’t what she’d believed it to be.
When Kaleigha escapes her father’s clutches, we are plunged into a parallel world of metallic ghosts, Fadians and other supernatural characters.
Not everyone is truthful and trustworthy and there are many secrets to be uncovered. Kaleigha must save her city, but it’ll come at a hefty cost.
Rage issues are a real problem for Fadians so it makes for some interesting relationships/conversations between some of the main characters.
This was a quick and interesting read, and I’m eagerly looking forward to book 2.

I do think it's important to note I don't usually read fantasy books but I was looking to get out of my comfort zone. This book was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was.
Kaleigha was a fierce, female lead and highly relatable with her ability to overcome obstacles and adapt to her surroundings. I was drawn to her (and into the story) from page one.
By the end of the book I found myself completely immersed in a fantasy world I didn't want to leave (something I never thought I would say) and also a little bit in love with Egoly. I feel like I know everything about him and at the same time, nothing at all. I need more of him in my reading life.

Set in a dystopian cityscape, it's the story of Kaleigha, a girl who is seemingly stuck in poverty with no prospects of getting out because of where she was born and her test results that pre-determine her place in society.
.
Sound familiar?
.
Well, it breaks from reality when Kaleigha finds out she has special powers, and a family secret that could change the fate of the entire city!
.
This was a wild Matrix-esque ride, filled with creative twists and turns, and a heroine who I was rooting for the whole way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!

Content:
Kaleigha, a young woman with low self-worth, is facing a future of grinding poverty in a dystopian surrounding. Her quest for survival is often derailed by incorporeal voices that lead her to good fortune as well as astray. When her mother kicks her out of her home, she encounters the father she never knew. He offers her a life of comfort, but when her true abilities manifest she is forced to find her place of belonging. Will she accept the price of her father’s guidance? Will she learn to take control of her growing power? Will she face death at the hands of the city’s elite power brokers?

POV: third person point of view (limited), past tense, vast vocabulary

My opinion:

To me, the story is woven from different genres, i. e. a line of science fiction, a string of dystopia and a golden thread of magic. The world is logically contracted, complex and unique. The characters are intense and especially Kaleigha’s character arc keeps the reader engaged. The pace is relentless and twists and turns make it an unpredictable adventure. Last but not least, the book layout is perfectly chosen, making it easy to enjoy the story to its fullest.

Conclusion: unique, fast-paced, enchanting

Recommendation for readers who enjoy speculative fiction with a hint of magic

No spoilers from me! I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this author’s book. Do you ever speak out loud when reading a book? Reading this book, you would of heard me gasping, or yelling, “Wait! What?” Making me reread what I just read. It gave me a few vibes, Matrix type feel, a bit of Mad Max vibe. It is clever and layered with worlds, tickling your brain to keep up. Cheering on the main character who is absolutely badass, btw. I’m intrigued to see where this series goes. Very clever, touching on real subjects in society.

Enjoyable and super creative. It’s a fantasy meets paranormal with an interesting twist of dystopian. Very original.

I would have loved a bit more development of setting (to help me see the concrete setting) and a bit more development of the interesting and fierce characters, but not enough to not recommend this interesting book!

A unique, imaginative story that combines elements of dystopian science fiction and the paranormal. Kaleigha's understanding of herself and her world and how she deals with the challenges presented to her drive the narrative forward with a compelling energy.

I loved this unique blend of science fiction and fantasy! The world building reminded me of NK Jemisin, where the city itself feels so alive it is almost a character itself. Relentless pacing and engaging characters. I can’t wait for book two!

I was reading this and then I set it down for way too long and now I need to start over. So. I'll do that. At some point.
