About the author

Prosper Mérimée was a French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer. He is perhaps best known for his novella Carmen, which became the basis of Bizet's opera Carmen.

Mérimée loved mysticism, history, and the unusual, and may have been influenced by Charles Nodier (though he did not appreciate his works), the historical fiction popularised by Sir Walter Scott and the cruelty and psychological drama of Aleksandr Pushkin. Many of his stories are mysteries set in foreign places, Spain and Russia being popular sources of inspiration.

In 1834, Mérimée was appointed to the post of inspector-general of historical monuments. He was a born archaeologist, combining linguistic faculty of a very unusual kind with accurate scholarship, with remarkable historical appreciation, and with a sincere love for the arts of design and construction, in the former of which he had some practical skill. In his official capacity he published numerous reports, some of which, with other similar pieces, have been republished in his works.
He was also responsible for several translations of Pushkin and Gogol, when they weren't known in Europe yet.

"მატეო ფალკონე" 1829 წელს გამოიცა. მცირე მოთხრობაა, რომელიც დიდ შთაბეჭდილებას ახდენს. რაღაცით მატეოს სიამაყის, რო მესმის მაგიტომ 4/5, თორემ ისე solid 3/5.

"სალხინებლის სულები" დონ ხუანის მერიმესეული ვერსიაა, რომელიც საინტერესოდ და უცებ იკითხება. რელიგია და ისტორია (ჩემთვის პირადად) იდეალური ნაზავია ლიტერატურაში.

"კარმენი" 1845 წელს გამოიცა. ჟორჟ ბიზეს ძალიან ცნობილი ოპერა არსებობს, რომელიც "კარმენის" მიხედვით შეიქმნა. სიუჟეტის ცენტრში ბოშა (გიტანო) ქალი კარმენი, ნავარელი დონ ხოსე და თავად, პროსპერ მერიმეა. აქ უკვე კარგად ჩანს, ისევე როგორც "სალხინებლის სულებში", რო მერიმე კარგ მწერალთან ერთად კარგი ისტორიკოსიც ყოფილა.

As with almost any collection of short stories, some are better than others. None of these stories are boring, but none of them feel at all special or particularly memorable either. Mediocre. The French is pretty easy to understand and if you are a student of the language you can read these stories without too much trouble.

პირველადი შთაბეჭდილებით მეგონა, რომ ,,ხევისბერი გოჩას" ფრანგულ ვერსიას ვკითხულობდი.
მაგრამ ახლა რომ ვუფიქრდები, ეს ორი სრულიად განსხვავდება ერთმანეთისაგან როგორც ამბით, ისე პერსონაჟების მოტივით.

Mérimée is a brilliant story-teller, reminiscent of R.-L. Stevenson and Pushkin: there is perfect timing, psychology and a naturally flowing language. I enjoyed these stories very much.

Frankly, the first and fourth stories of this collection very very good, while the middle two were so-so. The underlying theme of the collection seemed to me to be honor and trust, and the benefits and pitfalls of both. The title tale, "Mateo Falcone" was a short and horrifying tribute to family honor. I enjoyed the collection, but do not see it as one to hold up very well over time.
