'Someone Please Come Adopt This A**hole!' So begins the 2016 Craigslist ad that introduced the internet to The Ditch Kitty, a maniacal orange kitten saved from a roadside ditch only to turn his rescuer's life into a living hell. The post went viral. And the internet fell in love with the tiny, orange monster. But it would have been impossible at the time for almost anyone to know the story behind the ad. They couldn't know about The Kid- the one so desperate to escape his abusive home that he attempted suicide at the age of 10, the one who grew up to be a soldier, because what else is such a directionless kid supposed to do? And they definitely couldn't know about the drinking. The despair. And how all of it- the PTSD, the alcoholism, and above all his reckless stupidity- would put him behind the wheel of a ticking time bomb and cost the life of a man he never met. When JT Gregory meets The Ditch Kitty, he's completely lost- out of prison and out of work, failing to write a book he'll never finish- and awaiting news on the birth of a child he's in no way qualified to have. A child that would be so much better off without a screw-up ex-con in her life. So who's the real asshole? And who, in the end, saves whom? Night A Memoir is the striking true story of one man's trauma, his guilt and self-loathing- and the tiny, orange night goblin who saved him from it all.
JT Gregory lives in a small, quiet town in Michigan with four lunatics for children, three night goblins, and an extremely supportive sig-other. He clings to sanity. And occasionally, he writes down words.
I finished this book in two nights (fast, for me!), and am still, days later, breaking into giggles at random times when something pops back into my mind! That being said, and trying desperately to avoid spoilers here, this is not a comedy; this is a real life story. If you already know the story of the Ditch Kitty, don't let the cat out of the bag. If you don't know the story, don't read anything other than the cover before you read the book. Don't try to learn about the author or the story before you read it. It is sooo much better not knowing how this story will end when you are reading it. I knew nothing, other than reading the back cover, and having heard about the Craig's-list post. What an amazing story of clawing your way out of the ditch you are stuck in, how hard that struggle can be, and how what seems like the last straw can become your strong foundation (sorry, but not sorry, about the un-intended puns.) Excellent!
I have been with you since the beginning. A friend of mine shared the infamous rehoming ad. I was hooked and like a stalker I found you on Facebook and began to share in your life and Ditch's. I am an avid reader and I wanted to know this amazing writer. I have quietly been rooting you on and thrilling at every up and despairing at every down. I read your book thinking it would be the cute anecdotes about our beloved Ditch but I found a work that goes so much deeper. You see, I grew,up with an alcoholic father. A dad who made all the wrong choices. I felt every word you wrote deeply. I shed a few tears but you didn't leave behind a legacy of misery like my dad. You are are the success story I wish my dad had been.
It was real and I could relate to it. It made me feel not so alone, that my mistake are not the end of the world. It made me laugh, cry and nod my head in agreement. Yes I would totally recommend it to someone else.
Definitely a must read. As the Author takes you on his personal journey from darkness to the light.
Drawn into the world of the Author, done in his unique style, finding yourself flipping pages faster to see what comes next. From laughter to tears as you progress, each chapter better than the last. Definitely a must read, and can't wait to see what the future holds for the Author!
Everything about this book is unique and amazing. I laughed and cried. There aren't words to describe how I feel about it. This isn't just a book, it's an experience. JT, thank you for creating this!
I highly recommend this book IT was very raw and truthful, JT Gregory opened his heart and shared it with America. It was about survival, acceptance, responsibility, abuse, , war, PTSD, addictions, and underneath it all about love, and how a little baby kitten helped him open his heart and eventually he learned to love himself and not be afraid or feel unworthy of becoming a father, Everyone has struggles, this book is an inspiration!! He is great writer and you should follow him on social media, he will give you great laughs as talks about his adventures with his cats!!
About a week ago I was contacted by an author named JT Gregory, asking if I’d like to review his new book, Night Goblins: A Memoir. Night Goblins? What a strange title for a memoir, I thought. I clicked the link to his website, read the synopsis, and knew I had to read this book – which I did in a record-breaking day and a half. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited about a book or an author in quite some time.
After doing a little digging online, I learned that JT Gregory had placed an ad on Craigslist several years ago trying to find a home for the kitten he found in a ditch near his house. The ad said: Someone please come adopt this asshole. It went on to describe this orange kitten with such great wit and humor (“. . . he’s like a crack addict begging for a fix every time I take a step into the kitchen”) that the ad went viral.
Night Goblins is the memoir of the guy who wrote that ad, and just as that wasn’t your typical rehoming ad, this is not your average memoir. Weaving in and out of past and present, tragedy and comedy, in a brilliant stream of consciousness style with lavishly rich descriptions, Gregory paints pictures you won’t soon forget. It is a heartbreaking story of child abuse, alcoholism, war, imprisonment, and PTSD. It’s a story about a broken man and the kitten who helped pull him out of a self-destructive, guilt-filled pit of despair. It is a journey with “The Kid” as he relives past traumas, faces the consequences of his actions, and learns to put others before himself, until finally it’s “I” and “Me” instead of “The Kid.”
There are illustrations of some of the scenes in the book, and while it’s unusual to have illustrations in an adult book with adult themes, it works here along side the superbly crafted injections of comic relief. The illustrations, done by Antoine Bouraly, remind me of the ones in the old Little House on the Prairie books I read as a girl – tasteful black and white sketches. And although lots of books claim to be “laugh out loud funny”, this one actually is.
Night Goblins is a special story, lived and told by an incredibly gifted writer. What makes it even more special, is the fact that some of the proceeds from the book and companion merchandise go to the author’s local animal shelter.
Get yourself a copy (free this weekend for Kindle on Amazon.com), because if the stir JT and Ditch have caused on the internet are any indication, this guy is about to become one of the most talked about writers of our time
Years ago, I had a business partner. And one day, hours before we were to host a large event, we had breakfast at a local restaurant known for its bottomless mimosas. He opted not to drink, so I drank his. Around mimosa number 3, I decided it was time to be honest: I told him his 2-year-old was a complete asshole. Well, she was. That week she’d thrown a tantrum in my office and instead of his wife escorting her out so I could work, she used my office as some sort of torture chamber - for me.
Anyway, when I sobered up, I realized that I probably should’ve used a different choice of words. I didn’t apologize or take it back, you understand, but the incident did get me thinking: is it possible to be too honest? Personally, I think the world could use more of it.
If you’re in need of it, I would like to suggest Night Goblins: A Memoir by JT Gregory. I do have to say: a little past the halfway mark of the book, I began contemplating not writing this review. But the further I read, the more I understood the reasoning behind his need to tell his story.
Night Goblins: A Memoir isn’t just about the viral “Ditch Kitty” Craigslist ad. It’s the story of a man who’s made damaging life choices and somehow managed to crawl out of the hole he’d buried himself in and (slowly) turn things around. It’s not the easiest read - from his rough and abusive upbringing to his time in prison and the charges behind it, some chapters are more uncomfortable than others. However, his honesty about his life is a reminder that we’re all human and we are not immune to mistakes. It’s also a reminder that we all have it in us to turn out life around, and the reason for the change can be anything - which I think is my favorite lesson.
Night Goblins: A Memoir is a great read for anyone who needs a little life-altering inspiration, or, anyone who has a cat that is a complete jerk. I’m a dog person so I imagine that’s just everyone. Put this on your “to read” list and enjoy!
Received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
The story behind the viral rehoming ad, Night Goblins: A Memoir, is the equally dark and beautiful story of fate, regret, and second chances. JT is a natural storyteller and masterfully weaves together his past through The Kid, growing up abused and directionless, and of the present fresh out of prison, jobless, and on the cusp of fatherhood.
After yet another failed interview attempt, fate intervenes in the form of a chaotic little orange kitten and his timid orange sibling. Quickly named Ditch and Cat, respectively, Cat manages to get himself adopted, leaving Jason to deal with taking care of the "Kitten from Hell" when he can barely take care of himself. In the end, they end up saving each other when they needed it most.
The fact that this book exists proves that The Kid and later JT (Jason) never gave up on their dream of becoming a writer. It may have been a long and bumpy road, but the outcome is some of the best and most honest writing I've come across. The emotions throughout Night Goblins are tangible and pull readers right into the thoughts and feelings of the dark and contrastingly hilarious moments that life can bring. JT beautifully illustrates his life experiences, including how depersonalizing and dehumanizing prison life really is. On the inside, it all becomes about numbers and counting down. The depiction of alcoholism also feels very real, and that struggle will be relatable to some readers and hopeful a story of hope for a better life.
JT's personal story also touches on an idea that we all seem to struggle with one way or another. Life changes can come quick and fast, and at other times seem unattainable, and JT describes this by saying, "But inevitable change is not the same as accepting change and causing change and making change. And waiting around for stuff to just happen because it eventually must, what sort of life is that?" This revelation he comes to is the moment that has stuck with me the most and will inspire me, and hopefully, many others to pay more attention to life and go after changes they want.
JT Gregory's Night Goblins is a book about life, pain, love, and a cat that helped change a life forever. Do not miss out on this stunning memoir that is already well on its way to being a hit among animal lovers.
A short but powerful book. Could have plowed thru it in a day but I chose to savor it. Some episodes in it were difficult to read so I would put the book down... walk away... ponder the events shared. I laughed out loud a few times. Cried with sadness and joy in the end. Been following JT and Ditch for quite a while and thought I knew their story. I didn't. It's a raw reflection of a life. Told in a stream of consciousness manner that feels like you're right inside his head. Keep on keeping on JT. Your a wonderful example of how to reconcile a past that you were stuck with, one that you created, and found a light, a life and a chance to grab. Hold on buddy. It's worth it. Thanks for sharing.
I have followed them, not from the beginning but almost the beginning. And if you know the back story behind this, you will love this book. If you don’t, you will want to go find the original Ditch Kitty ad and become a Ditch Bitch, just like me! This book will make you laugh, make you ugly cry, sometimes both at the same time. I highly recommend this! Read it! You know you want to!!
I have been a Ditch's Bitch from the beginning, I fell in love with JT and Ditch, and waited very impatiently for the book, and it was totally worth the wait. I read this book and laughed and cried and felt the gamut of emotions throughout. JT tore himself open to write this book, and you can feel the depths of his heartbreak, loneliness, despair, and then his growth and love and overcoming his challenges, and fall in love all over again with him and his family, and his cats. I knew some of the story, but not all, and he is such an amazing writer that you're in there with him, immersed in his life and crying for him, and laughing with him, and loving it all
Everything I thought it would be... AND MORE! Raw, emotional, fantastic! As one of Ditch’s long-time Bitches (she says proudly), I am over-joyed to see this dream of J.T.’s come to fruition! Congratulations- to the entire Night Goblin family... and Long Live the King! 🧡👁🖤
A human in the dredges ofA despair. Saved by a tiny yellow furry bad attitude. In the guise of a kitten. Fate had her hands in JT finding Ditch in the ditch.
One of the best books I've read in a long time. Didn't realize what a messed up childhood JT had. So much pain and sadness. JT is a fantastic writer and I look forward to reading more of his work. Ditch's B*tch from day 1!
This is a story of a man and a kitten and you may be thinking, so what? But it's so much more than that. I'm not normally a non-fiction reader but I've followed JT and Ditch since early on, I've seen what they've become. And it's great. Definitely recommend. Jt's got an incredible stream of consciousness writing style and you feel like you're there in his head with him. It's just great. And this story is only the beginning.
A great first book, you’ll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll love it!
Whether or not you know the backstory, you’ll love this raw, emotional, brutally honest look at a man in the midst of growth and the Ditch Kitty that was the catalyst for true, lasting change. I’m so proud of the author, he’s laid himself open in this book, and we are compelled to respond with love.
I couldn’t put this book down. If you need a book to show you the light in the dark, a book to give you hope, a book that proves you can find redemption then read this book. JT takes his readers right to the deepest parts of his pain and isn’t afraid to hide the ugly truths about life. Just read it.
Finally my most anticipated book of this year is here! I’ve finished it! I laughed, I cried. I did both at once. Available on amazon! And I highly recommend it! 5 ⭐️! JT Gregory thank you !
Forgiveness and second chances, come in the most unlikely (and likely) places. Sometimes they come simultaneously in the form of a feral orange fur ball full of chaos and destruction and the flutter of a newborn baby's eyelashes. It takes a lot of courage to face the parts of life that one has spent a lifetime running from. It takes even more strength to bear one's soul on page for the world to see.
Night Goblins: A Memoir is a very engrossing book. It is written in such a way that you can easily picture yourself in JT's shoes. It is raw, it is deeply personal, and, for better or worse, it doesn't hold back. Most importantly, it is a memoir that everyone can relate to in some way. The narrative language is the language of the "every man" not a self entitled celebrity. While JT's personal experiences might not be the reader's, the beauty of it is that one can still draw parallels to one's own life. This is a life story that could easily be yours, mine, or the seemingly inconspicuous person down the street.
Antoine Bouraly's illustrations perfectly capture the tone of JT's memories in an intricate, yet gritty way. The lines and shadows combine just like how hazy images of the past do in your mind, and Antoine seemingly effortlessly brings them to life. The illustrations added to the book better than any portrait or neatly drawn creation ever could. Not to say Antoine's drawings aren't neatly done, because they are, there's just an exposed quality about them that captures the moment perfectly. He is a very talented artist, and I look forward to his future work.
The true measure of a man is how he views his mistakes, whether or not he can learn from them, and not so much what he says about them, but what he does about them. JT faces his mistakes, and his past, head on in this memoir. It is not always easy, and not always kind or pretty, but self growth and redemption rarely are.
I have to say first and foremost I'm not usually one to leave reviews on books other than just a star rating, BUT I feel that in this case I am happily willing to make an exception.
I've been following Ditch Kitty since the ad posted on Craiglist and I absolutely loved it. I almost wanted to go get the kitten, I am only on the other side of the state from where the ad originated. When a facebook page was made following Ditch's asshole antics I immediately followed and looked forward to reading every new post.
I was in no way prepared for what the book had in store. I have never read a book that had such raw emotion. Its incredibly obvious right from the start how much heart and soul JT poured into his work. It jumps from the page right into you as the reader. There were moments I could feel the pain and sadness he was going through with Bootsie and the kittens. I couldn't help but laugh while at the same time cringing at the white cat in the vet clinic. Most powerfully, the end, a mix of emotions, sadness, hope, pride, and understanding at how hard it really is to fight addiction.
I would highly recommend this book to any one! JT thank you so much for writing your story!
Night Goblins is a quick, compelling read; a memoir of a difficult life lived, and hard lessons learned. Most of the book is pretty dark: from the author’s troubled childhood to the trauma of overseas deployments to the disastrous result of poor choices. The saving grace comes in little and late (but fortunately not for the author, neither too little nor too late.) Rather, the saving grace, which comes late in the book, is a little orange fuzzball of a kitten, all spitfire and claws, rescued from a ditch. Sometimes, all we really need is to know we are needed and loved, and that’s enough for us to get out of our own heads just enough to focus on the horizon. Ditch Kitty did that for the author ... but not before providing an entertaining introduction to the madcap world of a crazed kitten. It’s laugh out loud funny, and dearly needed in this dark tale of redemption. Kudos to the author for a job well done — and my heartfelt wishes for continued sobriety.
I have followed JT and Ditch on Facebook from the beginning. When my husband and I were dating we would read and laugh over the antics. But reading the book and seeing more of JTs soul and how Ditch truly helped him become the man he is today is amazing. I loved the book. I am in recovery myself so I understood the depths of alcoholism and some parts of the book had me tearing up because I’ve been there and am so grateful that I am not anymore.
If you want a book that will make you laugh and cry and feel for a person you have never met, read this. Sit down and see into this mans soul because he truly put himself into this memoir. I am on my 3rd read through right now and can’t wait to finish it again.
Oh and if you are not following him and Ditch on social media, start. They are some positivity we need in the world today.
If you only read one book this year, make it Night Goblins! I’ve followed JT Gregory on social media since almost the very beginning of his journey with Ditch. He’s an amazing writer and it’s been awesome to watch this journey unfold. He is gut-wrenchingly honest in this memoir, sharing the parts of us that we try to keep from others. It is a very honest and powerful account of overcoming the bad things that happen to us and the mistakes we make along the way, even when those mistakes are life-altering. This memoir moved me deeply, and gives hope to those in need of it. Thank you for your incredible honesty, JT!
A poignant story. A bit overly descriptive in the narrative at some points. I most enjoyed the epilogue and the straightforward writing style contained there.
I’m sure you’re reading this, JT, so this is for you... thank you for sharing your story and for working so hard to be the man your family deserves. Thank you for your military service. And thank you for serving your time like a man. Love the heck out of those kitties and those kiddos and that beautiful wife! Looking forward to your next title.
I don't usually write reviews, but this book is well worth the read. You may have to get past some run on sentences, but to be honest I don't think the story would be the same without them. The imperfection of the writing makes it feel like you are in JT's mind. Which isn't that the whole point of a memoir? This books lays it all out, the good the bad, and the night goblin. I would give it 10 stars if I could.
